i ordered 2 books for a church research project on Black saints in the early Church and also in the Reorganization, on which the one book had a small section us and all had info from the our shared early church history, and it was an ebook too!

and i get physical mail from them once a month. i have no idea how to cancel.

herald house, the community of christ publishing house, contacts me much less, and i buy books from them all the time.

and oh their church book app reminds me to read my scriptures and the words of their prophets regularly if it's not in sleep mode.

i have to admire the effort behind it, ngl.

Someone broke into my apartment. 9:14AM

Spencer reads the message under the table but forgoes discretion when he registers what it says and who it's from. He excuses himself from the round table, something he isn't even sure he's allowed to do, and hurries out onto the landing. 

You answer on the second dial. "Hey, did you see my text?" you ask. 

"Are you okay?" He squeezes his phone. 

"I'm not sure. I'm fine, but my lock is busted and the door won't stay shut." 

"Where are you?" 

If you're surprised that he's steamrolling, you don't show it. Spencer leaves work to meet you at the coffee shop you've chosen for refuge, your eyes tired, a small bag of your most important possessions hanging on a slumped shoulder. He hugs you straight away. 

"I'm fine," you say into his neck. 

He hugs you tighter. "That's good," he says, feeling useless, fingers stroking little paths into your shoulders. He pictured the worst from your text, and seeing you in person is the only true mitigator. You'll talk down bruises and black eyes —you have in the past. 

He pulls the story from you as you walk back to his apartment, shoulder to shoulder in the cold street. "It was open when I got home, the door, but I did what you asked me to." 

"You didn't go in?" he confirms proudly. 

"Not at first." 

"You really won't call the police?" 

"I texted you." 

Spencer takes the strap of your bag from you and throws it over his own. "I'm not that kind of cop. I'm not really a cop at all." 

"No, you're a fed, which is worse. The girls at work told me to stay away from you." You wipe under your eyes sluggishly. Sleep clings to you like a shadow trailing behind you, ever-present. 

He puts his hand behind your back, worried you'll fall up the steps to his apartment building. "They think I'll what, extort you?" 

You shake your head, something sad in the slow side to side. "Girls like me have no business around guys like you." 

"You probably get too much business from guys like me." 

You laugh, but you both know it's not what you meant. Spencers noticed it more and more lately, nothing so obvious until now, this dead set belief you hold that he's one type of person and you're another. He gets that your work isn't what you wanted for yourself when you were growing up. He knows it isn't easy, even on your 'good' nights. It takes a toll to be seen as you are, nothing left private. But you've always said you liked stripping as much as anyone should like their job. "It's a job," you'd said, having barely known him, tired and hungry, curled up on his couch with nowhere else to go. "Only the luckiest get to really enjoy work. S'why it's called work." 

He'd hoped, perhaps in a self-absorbed way, that  having more support might make you feel better about yourself; he wanted his friendship to give you some confidence, basically. Before you met Spencer there was no one else you could depend on. It's why you stayed working for a man who broke your wrist until Spencer weaselled his way into your life and made you a bed in his living room for the time it took to get you out. His credentials helped, of course, but you survived it because you're resilient. You're awesome. You've done everything you can with what you have and you don't think it's enough. 

You and Spencer take the elevator to his floor, and for the twenty seconds it takes to get there, you let your cheek rest on his shoulder. He's just about to drop his head on top of yours when the doors open, and the slice of quiet you'd both savoured slips like sand between his fingers. 

"I can go back and get some of your stuff," he offers, guiding you the short walk to his door. He passes you the key rather than struggle with the lock himself. 

Your hand shakes as you push down the handle. "There's nothing worth going back for." 

"Don't say that, you have all your clothes there, your couch. You have things. I'll take my car." 

"You hate driving." 

"I'd hate someone robbing you even more." 

"Robbing me again," you correct, holding the door for him. 

You didn't have anything worth the trouble, it seems. You keep your savings in a locked box hidden in the bathroom that they couldn't find, and though your apartment is clean and bigger than the one you lived in before Spencer met you, it's mostly empty. You don't have a TV, you're not a collector. They took the radio off of the refrigerator, your microwave oven, and a box of cosmetic jewellery worth chapel change. 

"But it's your stuff. You deserve to have stuff." Spencer drops your bag gently and his with less care by the door. 

"It's only until the locksmith can come tomorrow," you say with a yawn. "Let the junkies lavish in my stuff for the next twenty hours." 

"That's not a problem for you?" 

"I don't have the luxury of that being a problem for me, Spence. What am I supposed to do? The locksmith can't come–" 

"There are a hundred locksmiths." 

"Not that I can afford." You shrug out of your jacket. "Spence, listen to me. It's okay. I can't ask you to do that, anyways. You've done more than enough for me already," you say, sitting on the couch. You perch for a moment like you're trying to be polite until fatigue overtakes you, and you sink into the cushions with a relieved sigh. 

Spencer crosses the space between you and kneels by your feet to untie your shoelaces. 

"Don't do that," you mumble, hand over your mouth as a second yawn in as many minutes catches you. 

"Why not?" He slips your shoes off, letting his hand rest on your ankle. "Wanna watch that weird cooking show–" 

"Why aren't you at work?" 

He climbs onto the couch next to you, unafraid to sit shoulder to shoulder. "You were having an emergency." 

You rub your face with both hand. "I knew I shouldn't have called you. You can't just leave work because of me, Spencer, what if you get in trouble?" 

"Someone I care about needed my help, and Hotch understands that." Spencer puts on his big boy pants with a wince. "Do you get that?" 

"I don't really… I don't…" You falter. "We're never going to work. You'll never…" 

"I'll never what?" he asks insistently, voice lilting up with a little incredulity. He can't help it.

You refuse to answer, turning your face from his. 

Spencer knows what you're going to say. He's bad with girls but he's good at recognising human emotion; he sees the same insecurity in himself as he does in you. He knows the feeling. 

You're not right, is the thing. 

Spencer would kiss you if he thought that would change your mind. But tired as you are, angry with yourself, defeated, he knows it's not a good idea. He takes your hand instead, sewing your fingers together with a deliberate slowness. He brings his other hand to them and strokes the back of your index finger with his thumb, careful not to disrupt your press on nails. He knows they have a tendency to come off with too much pressure, and you're always losing your glue. 

"If they really need me to go, they'll call me. But I'm staying here." His thumb moves down to your knuckle. You have little calluses and cuts and bruises everywhere from dancing. He's seen the contusions that line your thighs on a semi permanent basis. "When was the last time you had something to eat?"

"Spencer," you murmur. 

"Let me take care of you, please," he says, hand curling around your wrist with extreme gentleness. "You need to eat. You need to sleep. Let me worry about everything else for once, I want to." 

You still don't look at him, but you sink down an inch at a time until your cheek is on his shoulder again, like it had been in the elevator. Hesitant, you wrap your arm around his stomach. 

"I'm so stupid," you say. 

He wonders if that's a placeholder for what you really want to say. You think so little of yourself sometimes, but it's like you've told him before. Not everyone has the luxury of enjoying their job. 

"You're amazing." Spencer feels like he's on fire everywhere that your skin touches him. Is he saying the right things? "You are. You're the only person who doesn't see that." 

"The only person here, maybe." 

"You should always be here, then. With me. That way I can remind you." 

You sound more like yourself when you answer, though tiredness lines every word, "Thank you, Spencer. I don't deserve you." 

"Yes, you do."

Spencer rubs your hand until you fall asleep, and then he buys you a new toaster oven on his phone, and an industrial security lock. He doesn't know what it'll take to convince you that you deserve him, you deserve better, but he's gonna try. 

He presses his cheek to your temple and focuses on the softness of your skin where it touches his.

So for the sake of this post let’s assume you both met the same way!

The moment percy saw you he was entranced!

It was a normal day of practice and he was out in the practice pavilion to try his hand at archery(this was when he was still unclaimed)

He was struggling to even hit the target when he turned his head to talk to his instructor from the apollo cabin,only to see you sparring with the camp’s best swordsman,luke castellan!

You were expertly dodging and blocking his advances and while luke seemed to be getting frustrated,you looked smug and excited almost. It was then that perch jackson developed a hugee crush on you

Over the next few days he made attempts to talk to and interact with you,he joined you at the campfire and during these little interactions was when he realised you weren’t just pretty,you had a personality as bright as the sun and your sense of humour was elite!

When he got claimed you helped him accept it and even though you were still unclaimed it really helped him. You listened to him when he needed a friend and helped him see the brighter side of things.

And over time even you seemed to fall for him, i mean what wasnt to love,he was funny,sweet,supportive; everything a girl could ask for!

So when you confessed to him during a sparring session after having just beaten him,he was both confused and overjoyed!

You helped him up and he confessed to feeling the same.and as you both got older,your bond grew stronger.sure there were little hiccups along the way but you always made it work.

Percy noticed everything about you, your little quirks, your little gestures; everything

He was the first to notice when you were feeling even a little bit down and he always had your favorite snacks on hand for when you needed cheering up!

He always took you down to the beach or near the river,exploring both in his little protective bubble was the coolest,most awesome thing you’d ever experienced and even though you felt scared at times,he’d hold you close and not let go until you were on dry land.

Making blue food together in the off season and spending time at his and his mum’s apartment was heavenly,especially your home didn’t exactly feel like a home in the first place.

Sally loved you! She always teased the two of you when you curled up on the couch to watch movies and was just happy her son found someone.

During quests he always had your back but also knew you were perfectly capable on your own,i mean you practically taught him how to sparr yourself!

Through the losses and the gains,the battles and the hardship,you stayed together and helped eachother grow.

You loved him with all your heart and he the same. He was loyal to fault and would never judge or criticize you,if he did it was merely constructive criticism,nothing to belittle you or make you feel insignificant.

He helped you through your moments of insecurity and made you feel whole,like you were worth his love and like you were perfect the way you were.

In conclusion,being in love with percy Jackson means, unlimited support and love and a companion for life🫶

why you should read Mystic Prince if you enjoyed ORV

Mystic Prince / Prince of Myolyeong (묘령의 황자) is a fantasy and action-adventure manhwa with art & story by Aheuredal (아흐레달) and in my humble opinion, an absolute hidden gem. it's literally one the best manhwas i've ever read (among the top 2) and i've finally gathered my thoughts enough to try to articulate why i love it so much, and hopefully convince you to give it a chance!

here's the official summary on webtoon:

An immortal emperor rules the Kingdom of Yeol, a divine country blessed by gods with awesome powers. After a thousand years of peaceful rule, the time has come for a new emperor to be chosen. This is determined by a series of trials, in which twenty princes with special powers who have trained since birth must compete. As all princes of varying personalities and agendas gather to partake in the trials, intrigue and possibly even bloodshed seem all but certain. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the other princes, the Fourth Prince Jeok-yeon Ryu hides a secret he must guard with his life.

Mystic Prince is incredibly unique in terms of story and execution that i can't really compare it to anything else but here's why i think you'll enjoy it, especially if you also liked orv:

strong-willed MC who's not naturally skilled but works extremely hard

said MC is willing to suffer and hurt themselves to achieve their goals (aka kim dokja-esque tendencies)

seemingly cold and aloof ML with yoo joonghyuk vibes at first, naturally gifted and seems to look down on everyone

...but is actually head over heels for MC and just doesn't know how to express his feelings

ensemble cast of incredibly complex and well-developed characters with different personalities and motivations

MC seems a little dense at times but they have a tragic backstory that explains why they're Like That

incredibly bisexual vibes !! like literally off the charts

slowburn romance that is cooking up such a great meal

MC and ML have actually known each other for centuries

characters go through trials that involve risking death

extremely unique lore and world-building

i said ML before but there are actually multiple potential MLs with how much complexity all the character dynamics have

beautiful character designs (literally over 10+ within the main cast and they're all so unique)

evocative writing and heartfelt monologues that seem taken out of a book of pure poetry

narratively significant motifs of fire and water (à la orv's black/white and reader/protagonist)

profound and realistic depiction of the inner feelings and troubles that the characters go through

incredibly heart-wrenching original soundtrack! (actually made me cry)

some of the most gorgeous art i've seen in any manhwa (seriously pls just open the 1st episode and look at the first few panels)

delicious gender fuckery

MC is actually cross-dressing afab (i personally hc them as genderqueer; korean doesn't have gendered pronouns but the official tl uses she/her pronouns)

bonus: they're built like a fucking tank (as seen here) like hello??? which is so refreshing to see for an afab MC

plus they're also canonically lacking in empathy but still deeply compassionate which again is really refreshing

i'm sure there's even more stuff i'm forgetting but these are just some reasons off the top of my head why i think this manhwa is so amazing

please do give Mystic Prince a chance, it's an absolute delight!! there are multiple beautiful covers but here's a couple of them, BE ART BAITED <3

and finally some of my personal reactions to Mystic Prince and also a note regarding the content warnings under the cut!

feel free to skip this part lol but personally when i look for recs, i love when people tell me their emotional reactions and how passionate they are about it! so if this tells you anything,

this is the ONLY manhwa to have made me cry so far (yes that includes the orv webtoon, but not the novel ofc) like actually ugly sobbing with snot and tears and everything lmao

They also know things about people instinctively by studying there body language or just guessing. -You and Elias have been together for awhile, but even before you two became a thing you seemed to always notice one specific thing about him.

-No matter how badly he tried to hide her depression you always seemed to be really good at guessing when they were depressed.

-he didn't hate it, but she always felt..weird about it. He was so used to just being known as the 'chaotic funny guy' that it was weird when someone pointed out their depression.

-that wasn't really the only thing you were observant about either, you seemed to always be able to tell when he was having a bad day.

-and honestly..he loved that, she loved finally having a support and being allowed to finally lean on someone. Finally able to 'be herself' in a sense.

Dr. Clef

-Clef has always been the secretive type, not cause he wants to...okay maybe it is cause he wants to.

-Clef doesn't exactly like many people knowing much about him, so when you popped up able to see right through him..he hated it.

-no..hate is a lesser word for this..he despised it.

-He despised you being able to tell when he's having a bad day, or when he's upset.

-he despised you somehow already knowing he was Pan, he despised you somehow knowing he didn't take his meds and BRINGING THEM TO HIM??

-...but through all that hate..he felt something else. He knew what it was and he was scared of it, especially with how you were.

-he started to..like you, and like you being how you were. But he still kept up his 'hate' for you.

-as much as he wants to lean on you and cry about everything, he stays far FAR away from you. He's got a reputation to uphold and he refuses to let anyone see him as 'weak'

Dr. Glass

-Glass is similar to you in a way, He's able to see right through people..but not as much as you are.

-Glass is usually able to see through people after therapy sessions, no matter how much they try to hide Glass can see right through them.

-When he had a therapy session with you he just couldn't..see through you, but you could see right through him.

-at first it kinda freaked him out, but then it made him happy. Finally! Someone with his own skill!

-he tried to convince you to be a therapist but you didn't really seem to budge.

-as Glass worked with you, happy to finally have someone who can see through him as he sees through others he felt something.

-a spark of love for you, and he certainly didn't try to hide it. He knew you'd find out, and he was happy when you did.

Dr. Kondraki

-similar to Clef the man doesn't exactly like when someone knows 'too much' about him

-he'd rather everyone ignore him then come up to him and KNOW he's depressed. How the hell did you even know?

-well okay actually maybe it was a no brainer with his eye bags and numb looking face..plus the alcoholism. So he shrugged it off eventually.

-but when you came to his office after a meeting with some coffee, somehow knowing he hadn't had coffee. It made him a lil suspicious of you.

-first he thought you were some anomaly, then he just grew a semi hatred for you after finding out you were uh 'normal' and just had a talent for looking through people.

-he stays away from you, refuses to go near you. Though he can't help but like you a little bit..especially when you bring him coffee.

Mikell Shaw

-Mikell is very similar to Clef, he doesn't like anyone knowing too much about him. Especially with his job.

-When he first met you you both were agents working for the 05, he of course didn't like you at first.

-he had always thought you were some person who thought they were 'better than everyone' because of how you acted.

-But he learned you actually were just..like this? He began to kinda like it. Especially when you began to notice things about him

-what he didn't like was you somehow knowing almost everything about him, how he was feeling that day, how he hadn't had coffee yet, how he had forgotten his gun.

-It drove him crazy, YOU drove him crazy.

-He pretty much tries to stay away from you similar to Kondraki, and luckily his 05 job really helps

073-Cain

-Cain has been 'alone' for a very long time now, He's gotten used to the feeling of never really having anyone that can understand his pain.

-He's so used to everyone around him saying he's lucky and thinking he's lucky..assuming he's happy about being immortal.

-so when you came in, and seemed to immediately sense his sadness

-he just stared at you in awe, it wasn't rare for someone to ask if he's okay..but that was only when he showed his sadness.

-you saw his bright smiling face and seemed to just instantly know, he seemed to adore you for that

-he likes having someone around that can see right through him, someone that just..knows y'know?

-035 has lived his entire life around people oblivious to how he is.

-no ones ever been able to 'look through him' in fact he's been the one to look through others

-He's lived life pretty happily without all that..well until *you* came along.

-you were his new researcher, he was so excited to manipulate yet another person

-as you interviewed him he audibly gasped as you said something, something he never expected people to know about him

-"you were once important weren't you? That's why you act like this right?"

-035 seemed to freeze before clearing 'his throat' "what game are you playing at."

-he starts acting aggressive towards you, the more you seem to know scares him

-eventually though he seemed to..miss you? He seemed to request you often even tho during those times he always acted rude towards you

-in truth he was almost happy? To have someone 'see through him', but he'll never openly admit it

-you definitely freak him out a few times as well whenever you say something about him.

-049 similar to Cain has been alone for awhile, he hasn't really had anyone he can talk to and seem to just know what's wrong

-well..there was that fellow that one time, but that was so long ago.

-But then you showed up, a JR researcher working with a fellow named Gears.

-He just expected you to be like so many other researchers, ask questions, write things down and then leave.

-but you seemed to actually chat with him, and then he heard it

-"You seem sad today, are you okay 049?"

-He stared into your eyes not even answering you, he didn't know how to answer..no one had ever really asked about him let alone know what was wrong

-"I'm..fine. Thank you Doctor."

-He requests you a lot after that, requests you two have daily talks and 'tea time'

-he likes spending time with you and he doesn't mind you being so 'observant'

-he likes it, he likes someone actually knowing about him.

List of characters who I think could make for interesting culprits (+my justification for why)

I am seeing a lot of predictions for DRDT and the victims and all that but no one seems to be predicting culprits so I decided to take a crack at it. Most of these are kinda mixed between how likely I think they'd be and how interesting I think they'd be (also not including chapter 2 culprit prediction)

Rose - This one I am lowkey convinced about purely because of certain moments of her character and the likely motive for chapter 3 (if we follow them replicating DR1 motives, the next one should be money). In the FTE, Rose says how she is scared of herself and her memory. This specific line really made me enjoy the possibility of her being a culprit.

Maybe it ends up being a Gonta situation and she starts repressing her memories of her committing the crime, leading to her eventual realisation when the evidence points to her. Or even worse the idea that she might never forget how her victim looked after death.

Her having a photographic memory and intelligence could also serve very useful as the culprit, as she could notice potential evidence that some might not.

Hu - Hu's hidden quote and entire character gives me huge Kirumi vibes.

Funnily enough I don't think this quote is entirely about her being a culprit, I more so think it's about her motive secret (probably the suicidal child one).

She probably has done something in the past that made her want to atone for what she did leading to her trying to commit suicide multiple times. However what I think would be interesting for her character is that she eventually starts getting character growth and realising that she despite what she's done, she wants to live leading to her killing to survive.

Which might end up leading to her murder, maybe out of self defence or because of a motive (maybe something like dr2 where the cast is left to starve). She probably would feel extremely guilty for it but unlike how she was in the past, she doesn't want to give up living.

It would be really heartbreaking to see Hu have a Kirumi moment (it was a great moment in DRV3 but was undercut by how ridiculous Kirumi's backstory is) and have her clawing to survive.

Eden - Now here me out, I really do not like ch2 Eden culprit speculations/theories, however Eden as a culprit has so much heartbreaking potential if done right.

Have Eden commit a murder to protect Teruko or something similar to chapter 1. I could see it being an accident or something that Eden didn't even know she did but basically have her do something similar to Min.

Kinda make Eden the reverse of what Xander was to Teruko basically (instead of stabbing her in the back, she tries to protect her)

However this time instead of having Teruko push and reject Eden just like she did Min, she finally breaks down and opens up. It would be a perfect moment to showcase how Eden influenced her and how much she's grown.

This is why I can see Eden work as a chapter 4 or chapter 5 culprit

Also Eden's talent would make for a super cool execution

Ace - Now I am a support of the Ace survival agenda however I do like the idea of him being a culprit under certain circumstances.

Specifically I do like the idea of him killing either to protect someone or for the betterment of the group, again maybe something like the starving motive in DR2. Ace is often seen as a coward and in chapter 2 has mostly devolved into a spiteful, yapping mess. Having him do something as ballsy as to kill someone to protect another would show a lot of growth. It also would be awesome if it involves him possibly protecting Nico or somehow Nico ends up defending him in the trial (Nico and Ace friendship arc pls i beg).

I realised most of my culprits involve them protecting another person, I'm sorry I just live for that type of angst

Also I think Ace would have a pretty dark and messed up execution considering what we know his feelings for horseracing to be. It would also be funny (in a dark way) if what Ace says here somehow is a hint at his own execution.

Charles - I love the idea of Charles as a culprit not because of what it means for his character but purely because of the things surrounding him.

It's simple but I think it'd be very interesting to have him commit a murder that somehow dodges his fear of blood and dead bodies.

Another reason why him being a culprit would be very interesting would be Whit. Now weither you think he is the mastermind or not, Whit would make Charles being the culprit a lot more spicy.

We know he witholds information in the trial even though said information basically points to the culprit (the note in chapter 2 is the best exemple). So imagine if he knew Charles was the culprit (or was even a witness) and simply doesn't say anything.

Even spicier is if Whit knows Charles is the culprit but Charles himself doesn't know.

Now I'm not gonna get into how Whit being the mastermind could play into this speculation so weither or not you agree about the theory, I think Charles being a culprit would bring some very interesting Charwhit moments.

(Also for Charles character, I don't what his motivation could be, I'd imagine it would be an accident but I can see him not wanting to be seen as weak due to his phobia playing into him being a culprit potentially)

୨♡୧ note: i've never gotten a tattoo before (i need one rn.) so ofc i don't know much about how the process goes, so i just guessed!

You knew from the moment you showed Jamie the picture of the tattoo you wanted that he’d love the idea of it. He had already told you about his favourite places to go and one of them was only a 10 minute drive from your house, so you were booked in there for this afternoon. When you had gone to your consultation a couple days prior to discuss where you’d like it to be and how big you wanted it, Jamie had come with you as he was also planning on getting one soon. 

On the morning of the tattoo, your tummy was filled with nerves. You can’t remember the last time you had felt this nervous. You had felt too sick to eat your lunch, but Jamie insisted you ate something before going- he said this from experience. You forced down two slices of toast, and Jamie frowned, noticing your hands slightly shaking. 

“Is everything okay, my love?” He asks, taking your plate so he could begin washing the dishes. 

“Yeah, I’m just a bit scared. I’ve never had a tattoo before,” you chuckle, “does it really hurt as much as people say?” 

“People have different pain tolerances, darling,” he explains, “this-” he points to the tattoo on his leg, “hurt like a bitch! But if you got a tat there, it might not hurt at all.” He smiles. 

“Would you come with me? To get it done?” You ask, sipping on your drink. 

“Of course!” He says, wrapping his arms around you from behind whilst you were still sat at the table, “...only if you come with me when I get mine done.”

You had been sat in the chair for just over 30 minutes now, Jamie had taught you some relaxation techniques to stop yourself from having a freakout in case the pain got too much at any time. He told you to hold his hand, and you did. You would squeeze it when the pain would increase, and Jamie would rub his thumb over your knuckles to soothe you. To let you know it’s okay, that he’s there. You had explained to the tattoo artist that you didn’t have such a high pain tolerance, and he was completely okay with it, telling you that if you needed a break at any time don’t be afraid to let him know. You took a break when it was half-completed, which is when Jamie walked to a nearby store to buy you a snack. 

When he came back, he gave you the cookie he had bought, which he also bought one for himself, and you were ready to continue after eating. Jamie smiled as he took your hand into his, seeing how you bit your lip trying to push through the pain. 

“You’re taking it so well, love.” Jamie said, catching a glimpse of your new tattoo as the artist still worked on it, “it looks awesome!”

“I can’t feel my arm,” you laughed, squeezing Jamie’s hand even tighter, “is it nearly done?” 

“Almost!” The tattoo artist said with a smile, wiping down your arm, “just one last detail…”

Jamie kept talking to you in an attempt to divert your attention, so you wouldn’t focus on the pain in your arm. Because of this, you didn’t even realise the tattoo artist had finished! You looked at your arm, it was slightly red around the new tattoo, but you remember Jamie had explained that it’s normal. 

When you left, you couldn’t stop looking at your arm, admiring the work of art that will now remain there for the rest of your life. You were thrilled, it looked amazing, even when it’s covered in plastic wrap. 

“See, there was nothing to worry about, was there?” Said Jamie, wrapping his arm around you as you both walked down the street back to his car. 

“No, not at all!” You grinned, “I’m thinking about getting another one now, maybe a bit higher up, on my shoulder or something-”

Jamie began laughing, interrupting you as you spoke. You looked over to him to see him shaking his head with a smile on his face. 

“Y’know, that’s just what I said after my first tattoo.” He said, as if to tease you. 

“But at least my first tattoo was something meaningful- and not Bob Dylan... on my ass!”

Hiccup has an allergy to ‘girl talk’.  It’s not the kind that gives him hives or general inflammation, and it would almost be luckier if it were anaphylactic, because if it were, that might at least shut him up.

But as it is, it’s the kind of allergy that makes him word vomit.  Like a lie-tose intolerance that doesn’t let the bullshit reach a place where he’d absorb it anymore. 

He tries to be subtle.  Really. 

In fact, he succeeds, because he doesn’t glance at the women behind him in his corner café on a Saturday morning.  He doesn’t even hunch his shoulders when they start listing off disappointing dates and wishing for impossibilities. 

He minds his own business, until. 

Until. 

“Oh come on, Anxious and Pathetic, I like that in a man.” 

Hiccup snorts, louder than he thought he was going to, and the table behind him goes silent for a beat.  Just a beat.  Then, the voice he’d heard less of but pointedly ignored more pipes up. 

“Excuse me?” 

“Huh?”  He looks over his shoulder, pretending to be annoyed at them for eavesdropping, which is hard because of the fact that he was just eavesdropping.  He’s a lot of things but hypocritical isn’t one of them. 

“What’s funny?”  She asks, peeved enough that he really looks at her, and his Adam’s apple bobs so hard it’s painful. 

“Something on my phone.”  It’s unconvincing even to him, and after an anxious beat of silence he remembers to pull his phone out of his back pocket. 

“Mhmm.”  She looks him up and down, piercing blue eyes scanning him like a barcode, reading more information that he’s offering. 

So, he offers.  Because it’s girl talk and the only way to keep his airways open is to talk. 

“Anxious and pathetic,” he starts, and she has the sense or maybe is just shocked enough to look caught, “you say you like that in a man, but do you know what that means?” 

She blanches.  She’s really very pretty, in the way that makes him nervous but also a little desperate, which consequently, is when he happens to be funniest.  Not that anyone is laughing. 

“Does it mean interrupting strangers’ conversations?”  She raises an eyebrow, re-composed, and he bites his tongue against a stutter. 

“Absolutely.” 

“Oh, then continue.”  The color comes back to her face, just a bit, and it’s like a fortune cookie predicting his death, but again, he can’t stop.  If he could stop, he wouldn’t be here. 

“It means constantly hyping this hypothetical man up while they’re being stupid and embarrassing.  In fact, embarrassment is just a constant theme with an anxious and pathetic man—”

“Sounds like you know from personal experience.”  That’s the woman’s friend, and she has a perpetual expression of amusement, which raises Hiccup’s anxiety levels another tick. 

“Hypothetically,” Hiccup turns in his seat, repositioning, committing to the conversation when he shouldn’t, but when has he backed off of something he shouldn’t do?  “Hypothetically, dealing with an anxious and pathetic man is just a constant onslaught of situations in which he requires support, interest—It’s like getting a puppy, but without the benefits of having a puppy—”

He stops himself, breathes, wonders if he’s going to regret this in a legal way and then continues, because he has girl talk word vomit and there’s no anti-histamine for that. 

“Some of the benefits, I guess, like loyalty, like puppies, anxious and pathetic men tend to attach themselves to strong, confident women who know what they want.  It’s operant conditioning, some praise for good behavior and pretty much anyone will go along and—”

“Buy me a coffee?”  The target of his rant asks, eyebrow raised, leaning forward on her elbows and he swallows hard. 

“I mean.  Sure.” 

“Good boy.”  It’s a joke, he knows it’s a joke, because he just prattled on about puppies for longer than he would like to admit, but it gets to him anyway.  The back of his neck flushes and he shrugs to attempt to obscure it, but it doesn’t work. 

And she notices, her eyebrow quirking. 

“What kind of coffee?” 

“Americano, room for cream,” she tells him, chin leaned on her palm, and he goes.

“How much cream?”  He asks, for some reason (the reason being she’s magnetic), and she gestures with her fingers close together and he guesses. 

Anxiously. Pathetically. 

“Thank you,” she says when he hands her the coffee, fingers warm where they glance over his and linger.  “Any more opinions on my love life that you’d like to offer?”  She asks, cocks her head, takes a long sip of her coffee. 

“Um.”  Hiccup says intelligently, as is to be expected in the face of…that.

Ok is this the BATTS or Raines adopted kids? I'm gonna answer for the latter, cause they have more adopted kids than just the three!

And it's gonna get long so I'll put it under the cut!

Amber: Sweet baby girl. I love and adore her. She strikes me as the kind of person who acts mean at first because she's been hurt in the past (likely by her parents), but she also gets attached quickly when shown the slightest amount of affection from a potential parental figure. Hence her reaction to Eda (from "I don't think she'd be a good fit" to "BYE MAMA EDA!")

Katya: My giiiiirl! You write your fanfics baby I love you!! I'm so glad she came back to be a more important part of the story! I loved her in the first episode, so seeing her again as part of the BATTS was so awesome! She deserves to write about food and food being in love! While toppling the empire!

Derwin: The lad! I love his design, and his little two handed wave when he met Luz was so sweet! He strikes me as the strong but silent type, preferring actions over words. But he's still a silly goofy guy! He's just quiet about it! And this it total headcanon, but I imagine he had a bit of a rough life that lead him to his quiet disposition, likely bullying and mistreatment from his school mates or those who thought the Bard Coven was dumb. But he's a fighter, he's sweet, and he loves his found family with all his heart!

Luz: Sweet baby girl I love her so much pls Dana let her be happy!!! I love Luz as a character, the way she's grown, the way she interacts with the world around her, the way she accepted the boiling isles and all it's wild magical danger, and still changed it so much! She made friends, which lead to the entire day of unity being taken down. She reunited Eda and Lilith which lead to Belos's reign (I didn't say all the changes were good). She started dating Amity which lead to her gf's parents divorce! :D She's just such a strong, loving, caring, crafty, creative, amazing character. I love her endlessly!

King: He is baby. Pls protecc him. He's just a little guy!! He's been going through so much pls Dana! Now, King wasn't my favorite character when I first saw him. I thought he was cute, and endearing in an annoying younger sibling way. But he's grown so much, and he's such a caring kid. He wanted to be a king, but he became so much more. I love his brief friendship with Steve, and I wish they could have explored it more. I love his relationships with his family, and I really hope he and the others reunite soon.

And this one isn't exactly supported by canon yet, but I'm counting it.

Hunter: SWEET SON BOY LOVE OF MY LIFE BAD BUT SAD BOY I LOVE YOOOOOU! Ahem. Yes. Anyways. I adore Hunters character. He went from an intimidating presence in the shadows, to an awkward, shy, but caring lad just wanting a chance to find himself amidst all the chaos in his life. He deserves the world, and I'm gonna give it to him. In my own way. He's so expressive, and fun, and I love how he still trys to be intimidating, but he just can't pull it off like he used to.

SO! In terms of favorites...

Favorite of the BATSS: A tie between Derwin and Amber. Idk I just love them. Though it might be my headcanons talking.
