Slightly designed more for possibly children with its quirky asides, but still showcases some siege weapons. Some were pretty fairly in the right direction, like portable bridges. Some were just silly, which - no judgment to him, sometimes you just have to design something fun. It’s good sometimes to just draw a multi-cannon for funsies Full respect to his commitment to keep weaponry designs from being used for ill, though the video does make a point that a patron system of submitting weapons to a single rich elite isn’t the most ethical way to go about things nowadays.
But, some of these can be rehashed for fantasy, like water shoes but more magic based instead of inflatable bladders at the feet. Anyone who’s tried to walk in diving flippers can tell you that this isn’t the most stable option. All the same, plenty of these rely on people walking, which likely isn’t the most stable option in war if you’re going to have multiple people reasonably stationary in line for long-distance shots and with limited stamina.
If nothing else, they’re very fun inspirational points for stories.

Officers melted away and rumors spread, and all too soon, muffled by the snow, came the rumble of returning siege towers and the deadly hiss of more arrows.

Photographer Shadi Mahmoud documents severe damage by the IOF to Star Tower in western Gaza City. To understand the scale, note how small the people look as they climb over the rubble.

Okay but who is going to write the Ultimate Mutual Hurt/Comfort LotR AU where it is Legolas and Gimli who get captured together and taken to Isengard? And no doubt spend the whole time doing the “no, torture me instead!” thing, poorly disguising their concern through “well my people are heartier than yours, I just didn’t want your frail elvish/dwarvish self to get hurt” banter that inevitably breaks-down into “I was afraid you were dead/dying” love confessions and...

20240113: the History of LEGO Castle day 013. 6061 Siege Tower (1984, 216 pieces, 63 different parts) The Siege Tower comes in two parts - a light gray castle wall built mostly out the large castle wall panels, one of which is a new pattern with several dark gray bricks above and below the window, and the other is a black siege tower with brown wagon wheels. This is the second of the sets released so far with the light gray technic connector pin, indicating you can attach all these sets together. The castle wall has a hinged component and this is the first use of the top and bottom hinge brick, which becomes a staple of castle sets from this era. There are a lot of neat parts in this set, including the black flat hinge plates, the black 1x5x6 castle panel wall, and the brown ladder. Three minifigures in this set have the red torso with blue arms and the gold and black crossed axe pattern on the front and one has the red torso with blue arms and the silver breastplate design. The knight rides a white horse with a red one-clip saddle. The knight carries a dark gray sword and a light gray shield with yellow lion rampant on a blue background. One of the soldiers is an archer with a brown quiver, bow with notched arrow, and a black archer helmet. The other two wear the dark gray helmets with nose guards and one has a dark gray sword and a dark gray circle shield and carry a black halberd. This set has the dreaded 1x1 plate with side vertical clip, as well as the other version of the 1x1 plate with a side loop clip with a thin ring, both of which are more fragile than their modern versions with thicker clips. This is not one of my own original sets so I don't have the same attachment to this as I do to some of the other castles from the LEGOLAND System Castle, but it's still a really fun set. I am excited to combine it with all the others at the end of this subtheme :) This might be the last parts layout I do for this project, at least for a little while, as the next two sets are the first of the castles; one for the Black Falcons and one for the Lion Knights. Boxes of this era were also really neat because there was a top flap you could lift up and see the parts inside. There were also additional building ideas inside the flap and you can see yet another completely androgynous young human playing with this set near the idea of interlocking brick systems text. Back of that box (and interior front flap) alternate build ideas include a tower, and several other versions of walls and carts. Parts lists for this set can either be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable, while scanned instructions can be found at ToysPeriod. If you want to know more about the designer, Daniel August Krentz, BrickSet did a really nice tribute and has a full list of everything he designed.
