now i really really wanna get c1 on the speaking exam but i feel like my speaking is still my worst skill by far… can i change that in just 5 months?

A year ago I did the #speakingin20 challenge and so I just listened to the recording I did precisely a year ago and I feel like it's not that bad? I was actually a little surprised that my pronunciation isn't that terrible? I got scared that my Swedish has got worse, actually.

But I decided to try to record myself now, just talking from the top of my head and my dudes, I think I'm doing fine? I wasn't talking for long, I didn't have any specific topic so I didn't have to think about words I don't know, I made a lot of mistakes...but I think it sounds better then last year? 

I don't know, I guess I'm pleasantly surprised, even though I can't objectively judge my recordings.

so my method is recording the video/voice recording then re listening to it, typing it out and correcting my errors and then hopefully re recording it. both videos were a little over 10 minutes and neither were very fluid plus i stopped to search words, however the major difference in length truly highlights my weakness in spanish which i will hopefully improve over the course of this challenge. also i haven’t edited the spanish yet but i’m on that lol. that being said i don’t watch tv much so the topic was all round a bit challenging, looking forward to tomorrow’s topic which is family :) p.s. i’m undecided if i’m doing level medium or hardcore but my schedule will figure that one out

Okay I did the speaking challenge. Thank you @the-inverted-langblr for the idea!

I’m going to try to do just once per week, but speak for as long as I can (i.e. like 5-10 mins). I tried to write out what I said below, but probably there are a lot of mistakes! 

Noi moi, olen Lily. Tänään mä luulin, että minä puhun vain vähän minusta. Esimerkiksi missä minä asun nyt ja mitä minä teen.OK, no olen 27 vuotta, ja nyt olen asunut Suomessa noin 2 kuukautta. Ennen minä asuin Uudessa-Seelannissa noin 2 vuotta, ja minä olen kotoisin Australiasta, erityisesti Tasmaniasta. Niin mitä muuta?

Nonii, miksi minä olen opiskellut suomea? Koska mun poikaystäväni on suomalainen. Ja olen tiennyt, että me haluamme asua Suomessa nyt pitkään aikaan… niin minä päätin oppia suomea. Minä olen opiskellut suomea jo ehkä 2 vuotta, mutta tosi hitaasti kun asuin Uudessa-Seelannisa, ja nyt toivottavasti vähän parempi kun että minä asun Suomessa.

Miten minä opiskelen suomea? Niin, milla tavalla minä opiskelen suomea? Juuri nyt minä en mene suomenkurssille tosi usein, koska nyt on kesäloma Suomessa. Mutta syyskuussa minä aloitan mennä kanslaisopistolle, Kuopiossa, Suomessa. Ja sitten … toivottavasti minä opin nopeasti.

Ennen kuin nyt, minä olen ollut itseopiskelija. Minulla en ollut suomenkielenopettaja, mutta joskus minä puhuin suomailaisten kanssa internetissa, tai italkissa tai hellotalkissa esimerkiksi. Ja totta kai, minä puhuin mun poikaystäväni kanssa Uudessa-Seelannissa melko usein. Niin minä en ollut täysin yksin aikaisemmin nyt. No niin, se on tosi vaikea puhua suomea pitkään aikaan mutta.. minä yritän, minä yritän.

Toivottavasti sinä ymmärrät minua… ja jos haluat, sinä voit kertoa minulle miten minä kuulostan…. miten minua kulostaa… anteeksi en ole varma, miten minä voin sanoa suomeks. Mutta varmasti minun täytyy parantaa mun aksentti suomeks. Joo, mutta minä yritän. Niin, mitä muuta minusta?

No niin, kun minä asuin Uudessa-Seelannissa  ja asuin Australiassa, minä pelasin verkkopalloa. Verkkopallo on peli vähän samanlainen kuin koripallo, mutta vähän erilainen. Ja pelataan Australiassa esimerkiksi ja muissa maissa, mutta ei pelata Suomessa.

Niin nyt minun täytyy löytää uuden urheilun. Jos sinä haluat ehdottaa jotakin minulle, minä olisin tosi kittollinen. Ehkä minä voin kokeilla hiihtäminen talvella. Oikeastaan minä kokeilin siitä, minä kokeilin hiihtää, viime jouluna, viime vuonna kun minä kävin Suomessa jouluna, mutta vain 15 minuuttia rehellisesti. Mutta olin väsynyt sen jälkeen. Oli vaikea minulle, se oli minun ensimmäinen kerran hiihtäminen.

No niin, ja nyt Suomessa minä menen kuntosalille, ja minä yritän ymmärtää mitä opettaja, tai… ohjaaja, kertoo minulle tuntilla kuntosalilla, ja se on vaikea. Mutta nyt minä ymmärän vähän enemmän, esimerkiksi oikealle, tai vasemalle, tai hyppää, tai juokse … esimerkiksi minä ymmärän ja sitten minä teen. Minä teen näitä.

Okei … mitä muuta? Minä haluan puhua edes 10 minuuttia, mutta ehkä se on liian vaikea. Minä kerron teille minun perheestä. OK minulla on yks iso-veli, hän on vain yks vuosi vanhempi kuin minä. Ja hän soittaa kitaraa, niin hän on ammattisoitaaja. Ja minulla on vanhammet, totta kai. He ovat eläkkeellä nyt. Edes my äiti on eläkkeellä, ehkä mun isä työskentelee vähän vielä. Ja minulla on poikaystäväni. Hän on sama ikä kuin minä, ja hän työskentelee yliopistossa. Ja mitä muuta hänestä? … Hän on suomalinen niin hän tykkää puuroa and sauna… anteeksi hän tykkää purrosta ja saunasta - totta kai. Ja niin minäkin nyt.

Nyt minä rehellisesti en tiedä mitä muuta minä voin sanoa… niin nyt on loppu. Kiitos kun kuuntelet. Moi moi.

Bonjour tout le monde, bienvenue au premier enregistrement du challenge de @the-inverted-langblr​. Puis le challenge c’est #SpeakingIn20. Je suis très contente qu’elle a fait ce défi-là, parce que c’est quelque chose dont nous avons tous besoin, le pratique de parler. Bien, parfois on se sent très bête en se parlant soi-même, mais c’est juste comme ça qu’on va s’améliorer si on n’a pas des gens qui parlent pour de vrai cette langue qu’on veut apprendre.

Bien, moi comme vous l’avez compris, je parle le français. Ça fait un bon bout depuis que j’étudie le français. Je pense que j’ai fait ça depuis presque dix années. J’ai commencé à l’école puis après ça j’ai fait un échange au Québec. J’étais dans la région. J’étais au Lac Saint-Jean chez les bleuets. Si vous n’êtes pas québécois vous n’allez pas comprendre ça, je pense, mais c’est comme ça qu’on les appelle, les gens qui viennent du Lac Saint-Jean (est-ce vrai? Dans ce moment je ne suis plus sûre). Mais j’ai beaucoup aimé ça et ça m’a donné un accent très particulier, je pense. Mais bien, ça fait plusieurs années que j’ai pas été là, feque, mon accent est devenu un mélange entre le français québécois puis le français de la France. Mais le Québec, ça me tient au cœur et c’est ça qui signifie quelque chose pour moi.

Bon, moi, c’est qui? Sur Tumblr, mon blogue s’appelle language-dragon, en français, ‘le dragon des langages’, et j’ai choisi ce nom parce que j’aime ça. J’aime ça les langues, et j’aime ça les dragons. Mais mon nom, c’est Marina et je suis norvégienne. Présentement, je vais à l’université et j’étudie la programmation. Quand j’allais choisir qu’est-ce que j’allais étudier j’avais le choix entre la programmation et les ordinateurs puis la linguistique, et c’était un choix très dur pour moi, mais finalement j’ai décidé que les ordinateurs c’est mieux pour les jobs. C’est ça la vérité. Mais les langues ça m’intéresse beaucoup et je continue d’étudier les langues par moi-même. Bien, pas par moi-même toute seule; je l’étudie avec la communauté sur Tumblr et je vous adore tous.

Bin, comme je l’ai dit, mon nom c’est Marina et j’ai vingt-quatre ans. Je viens de l’ouest de la Norvège. Présentement, j’étudie dans une grande ville qui s’appelle Trondheim. C’est là où mon université s’est située, mais je viens originalement de Bergen. C’est une ville où que ça pleut beaucoup; où que ça mouille beaucoup. Et là-là, j’ai ma famille; ma famille c’est ma mère, mon père et j’ai aussi deux frères. Le premier de mes frères, c’est mon petit frère. Il a dix-sept ans et il prend aussi des cours de français à l’école, mais il est très occupé avec les sciences. Il aime plus ça, les maths puis la programmation aussi. Mon autre frère, c’est mon frère jumeau, et lui, il étudie ça, la chimie. Et nous avons aussi un chien qui a neuf ans. C’est un chien que j’adore, je l’aime beaucoup. J’aime tous les chiens. Le chien, c’est mon animal favori, je pense.

Ici, à Trondheim, j’habite avec mon chum, mon petit ami. Lui, il a vingt-neuf ans, alors il a cinq ans de plus que moi, mais ça fonctionne très bien, et je l’aime beaucoup <3

After receiving so much positive feedback from people saying they’d love to join me in my latest quest to improve my speaking, I’ve decided to create an official langblr challenge: #SpeakingIn20

Background: I’ve always neglected my speaking skills in Norwegian, and I decided that for the remainder of the year I want to try to do 10 minutes dedicated speaking practice 6 days a week, clocking a total of an hour a week, and thus have 20 hours under my belt by the end of the year. I recorded an intro with the intention of rerecording a similar intro at the end of the year and seeing how much I’ve improved in that time.

Because this was born from the goal of using the last 20 weeks of 2019 to do 20 hours of dedicated speaking practice, so that in 2020 I’ll actually feel like I can speak Norwegian to some (small) degree, I felt like #SpeakingIn20 worked!

The goal of this challenge is to get in a set amount of speaking practice every week, and see how much you’ve improved by the end of the year.

The Rules Guidelines Of This Challenge Are:

Start by picking a challenge level:

Chill - do the challenge 1-2 days a week

Medium - do the challenge 3-4 days a week

Hardcore - do the challenge 5-7 days a week

Pick a time goal for each day. (Eg 2 mins, 5 mins, 10 mins etc - this is totally up to you!)). You’re going to try to speak for that amount of time every day you do the challenge! Note: you don’t have to do it all in one go - if you can’t talk for 5 minutes straight, it’s okay to break it down into 5x1 minute sessions.

Record a little introduction. You don’t have to share it with tumblr if you’re too self-conscious; you just want to have a record of your starting point, so you have something to compare to at the end of the year. It can be as long or as short as you like!

You can talk about whatever you want, however I will be posting prompts at the start of every week and will keep a masterpost with all the previous prompts, so if you get stuck you can look to that for inspiration. [Update: I only ended up posting up to week 12, but feel free to go back and reuse prompts you previously skipped over or found difficult!]

You can use notes if you want (eg vocab lists, things you want to mention, other visual prompts), but try to avoid just reading out something you’ve pre-written if possible. (It’s totally okay to write something out to start with so you can get an idea of holes in your vocab, just condense it down to notes before you try speaking!) Do what you want! If you want to read aloud or have a script, then do that! Just make a note so that you know for future reference and can make a fair comparison of your skills now vs in a few weeks/months.

You can also do pronunciation drills such as repeating words you find difficult, practising tongue twisters, reciting the alphabet etc.

Record yourself speaking if possible. Again, you don’t have to upload anything if you don’t want to - you can just post about how you’re getting on - but you can if that helps to keep you accountable! Once you’re done, make sure you listen back to your recording and make a note of what you did well and what you need to work on still.

Use the hashtag #SpeakingIn20 so we can find each other. You can also hashtag with the level you’re doing and the language you’re learning like so: eg #SpeakingIn20Chill #SpeakingIn20German etc

If you want to do multiple languages, go for it! Just try to be consistent with what you do (ie don’t start skipping out on one language)

Anyone can join at any time! So if you miss the start now, or if you fall off the wagon, you can still (re)join later

Please reblog and spread the word! Speaking’s so difficult, it’d be awesome to have as many of us as possible cheering each other on!

It's my final recording (or inspelning, as I googled before recording this and then proceeded to forget it) of the speakin20 challenge!

I want to thank @the-inverted-langblr so much for creating this challenge! I really enjoyed it, even though it was stressful sometimes and I made so many mistakes.

In total, I spoke over 276 minutes (+2 recording this), which is 4.6 hours. 10 minutes of which I was talking to a real life Swedish girl, 36 minutes I spent reading Harry Potter out loud. And I'm just...wow. I didn't know how much I'll do of this challenge, I didn't do as much as I'd wanted to, but still, more than 4.5 hours of speaking? That's a lot!

I’ve been wanting to post something again so I decided to do a small introduction... about twenty recordings later I tried to speak more freely because it sounded weird when I was trying to say the same things every time.

Halusin tehdä jotakin, mitä voin postata Tumblrissa, koska en postanut mitään pitkään aikaan, mutta yritin harjoitella puhumista joka päivä. Ajattelin, että teen pienen esittelyn [I said esitys, wrong word], joten yritän sanoa pari juttuja itsestäni.

Olen Ems, olen 33 vuotta vanha. Olen unkarilainen. Olen opiskellut suomea melkein 3 vuotta. Blogini on melkein 3 vuotta vanha. Opiskelen myös vähän saksaa, ranskaa ja ruotsia. Olen tosi kiinnostunut kielistä. Tykkään matkustamisesta, olen ollut Suomessa 5 kertaa. Matkustan paljon parhaan ystäväni kanssa. Esimerkiksi matkustimme Suomeen, Ruotsiin, Englantiin, ja olimme Islannissa 2 vuotta sitten. Tykkään myös lukemisesta, ruoanlaitosta, eläimistä. Parhaalla ystävälläni on kissa, veljelläni on koira. Olen töissä tietokonetekniikkafirmassa. Nyt teen paljon töitä kotoa. Töissä puhun paljon englantia ja teen töitä tietokoneelle. Kun minulla on vapaa-aikaa, yritän harjoitella kieliä, erityisesti suomen puhumista.

I wanted to do something I can post on Tumblr, because I haven’t posted anything for a long time, but I tried to practise speaking every day. I thought I would do a short introduction so I’ll try to say a few things about myself.

I’m Ems, I’m 33 from Hungary. I’ve been studying Finnish for almost 3 years. My blog is almost 3 years old. I’m also learning some German, French and Swedish. I’m very interested in languages. I like traveling, I’ve been to Finland 5 times. I travel a lot with my best friend. For example we traveled to Finland, Sweden, England, and we were in Iceland 2 years ago. I also like reading, cooking, and animals. My best friend has a cat and my brother has a dog. I work at an IT company. Now I work from home a lot. At work I speak a lot of English and work on a computer. When I have free time, I try to practise languages, especially speaking Finnish.

For my second SpeakingIn20 post I decided to choose a random topic from the prompt lists since, u kno, British people love talking about the weather😌

Hoi! Ik besloot een random (??) prompt te kiezen, dus ik ga over het weer praten. Jullie kunnen de kippen waarschijnlijk buiten horen?? (yes lmao!). Zowel Engelsen als Nederlanders praten veel over het weer, en het klimaat is over het algemeen hetzelfde in Engeland en Nederland. Ja, vandaag is het zonnig en lekker warm, maar onlangs was het weer grijs, bewolkt en bijna een beetje koud, wel ja, een beetje koud - typisch augustusweer in Noord / West Europa. Maar ja, vandaag is het warm en ik vind het leuk. Ik kan de klimaten van Engeland en Nederland niet echt vergelijken, maar Engeland is heel vochtig in de zomer. De lucht is als soep en ik denk niet dat Nederland zo vochtig is, soms wel, maar over het algemeen is het hier droger (I do not know how to order this lmao). Zowel Engeland als Nederland worden in de zomer veel heter en het is eng. Elk jaar is heter dan het vorige, ja het is niet normaal en best eng.  Hmm, advies voor iemand die Engeland of Nederland bezoekt: ik zou zeggen, neem een ​​jas mee, en zeker een paraplu. Maar het klimaat is niet extreem, niet te warm, niet te koud. Hoewel de zomer dit jaar erg heet was: negenendertig graden (here I repeat myself bc it sounded weird to me?? Hi! I decided to choose a random prompt, so I’m going to talk about the weather. You can probably hear the chickens outside. Both English and Dutch people talk about the weather a lot, and the climate is basically the same in England and the Netherlands. Today it is sunny and nice and warm. Recently the weather has been grey, cloudy and almost a bit cold, well yeah, a bit cold - typical August weather in northern / western Europe. But yeah, today it is warm and I think it’s nice (like, nice out) I can’t really compare the climates of England and the Netherlands, but England is very humid in summer. The air is like soup. I don’t think the Netherlands is so humid, sometimes yes, but mostly it’s dryer here. But both England and the Netherlands are becoming much hotter in the summer, it is quite scary. Every year is hotter than the last and yeah, it’s not normal and quite scary. Hmm, advice for someone visiting England or the Netherlands: I would say, bring a jacket and definitely an umbrella. But the climate is not very extreme, not too hot, not too cold. Although, this year summer was very hot: thirty-nine degrees. But climate change is already evident everywhere I think. Yeah, it’s really scary. But yeah, I am glad that autumn is slowly approaching. I love autumn. Yeah, that is everything. Bye!

I kinda want to do the Speaking in 20 challenge but idk if I should do it in Dutch of French so here are my arguments:

Dutch:

pro: is my forever neglected language and it would be nice to actually work a little on it and give it some love

con: I don’t think my spoken Dutch is fantastic but I feel like I should focus on other aspects rather than speaking (like,,, pure grammar, never really studied that in Dutch...)

French:

pro: I feel really uncomfortable about my French accent which means I should work on it. I realize now when my Italian is better than my French how much I still have to work on to get it to “fluency”. My Italian has also influenced my French a lot and it would be nice to separate the languages again

con: idk if there are any real cons? except maybe I want to speak Dutch and maybe my insecurity about my accent makes me want to not do it? 

I mean I guess I could do a mix but if I want to do this for real to actually improve and advance maybe I should just do one and really focus on it? idk? help?

Speaking in 20: Week 9

No, moi, mä tajusin että minä en ole tehnyt tätä tällä viikolla vielä, sitten... no, nyt on hyvä aika. No, tällä vikolla on syysloma, sitten minä en tarvitse mennä kouluun. Se on aika kiva. Minä nyt voin levätä ja rentoutua. No, mutta, viikonloppuna minä menin minun poikaystäväni perheen luokse. Minä ajoin sinne, oli aika pitkä ajaa. Eli, minä olin vähän väsynyt sen jälkeen mutta minä näin hirviä, joo oli tosi innoissani, kun se tapahtui. Se oli kaksi hirveä. Onneksi he olivat tien vieressä. Mutta joo, ensin minä luulin, että onko se poro,onko, mutta se oli liian iso ja myös minä en ollut Lapissa, sitten ei voi olla poroja.

No mutta, mitä muuta... no tällä viikolla minun poikaystäväni oli Ranskassa...sitten olin kotona yksin, mutta hän tuli takaisin eilen. Se oli tosi kiva, että nyt hän on kotona. Ja, no, nyt on ehdottomasti syksy, eli ulkona on nyt todella...ruska.... onko? Se on myös ruskea, keltainen ja kultainen, mutta se on ruska ulkona. No, mitä muuta minä voin puhua... no, anteeksi en tiedä mitä minä haluan puhua...

No yksi aihe tällä viikolla oli työ, eli mitä sinun perheesi tekee töissä? No, minun äiti oli opettaja, nyt hän on eläkkeellä, mutta aikaisemmin hän oli opettaja. Hän opetti pieniä lapsiä, noin 5-vuotias tai 6-vuotias. Australiassa mennään kouluun noin 5-vuotias, siis hän auttoi lapset oppia lukemään koulussa esimerkiksi. Minun isä on insinööri. Ja minun veli on muusikko. Hän soittaa kitaraa, en tiedä jos minä kerroin aikaisemmin että hän on muusiikko. Mutta nyt hän on myös opettaja, eli tänä vuonna hän valmistuu opettajaksi. On aika jänittävä hänelle. Toivottavasti hän voi työskennellä koulussa esimerkiksi.

Tämä on jo aika pitkä, sitten nyt minä voin lopettaa. Moi Moi.
