Just like a small question based on that one ask, but... might the lack of brown/black men in popular M/M ships have to do with people trying really hard not to be racist so they just... never feature black/brown men? Because I know several F/F ships with brown/black women, but I can't remember a single M/M or even M/F with a black/brown male love interest... well, maybe Link/Gan or Zelda/Gan? But besides that one... nothing rings a notable bell.

There are more than that, anon, even if there aren't a lot.

If we're talking about AO3, Link/Gan has 785 works. Finnpoe has 8,636. Sam/Bucky has 10,591. Do you just not watch live action media?

Part of it is "I don't know. I just don't find them hot for some reason..."-style racism. That can shift with time and exposure but there's no instant fix even if someone is interested in changing their own tastes.

Part of it is being instantly screamed at and held to higher standards. (And yes, no matter how much people want to whine and say this isn't true, it is true, and anyone who goes ahead and writes despite the haters will tell you so.)

Part of it is fear of messing up above and beyond fear of reactions. Personally, I think this is toxic white guilt-flavor time-wasting and it's better to try and fail than not try, but it's a massive factor in what some people choose to write.

A lot of it is simply the composition of the mega-franchises that tend to generate the ships with bajillions of works. If we're looking at AO3 circles, the biggest f/f ships are not that big. If you look at m/m ships of the same size, there are some with some guy who is not white and not a pale-skinned Asian.

Only here are we finally getting down to the range where a lot of the big f/f ships on AO3 hang out, and here's Sam/Bucky, which is frankly not a small pairing at all unless you only mean in comparison to Stucky.

I'll stop there for m/m since these numbers are getting pretty distorted by me filtering out everything higher up, but you get the idea. Even that wretched Old Guard fandom couldn't completely kill off its ship, though then we get into how you're defining your terms and how much actual skin tone matters.

I don't see anything particularly significant until we get further down the listings, but there are definitely smaller fandoms like Leverage where everybody loves and ships the black guy.

I mean, yes, clearly, media does have a bias against darker skin, and the darker the skin, the bigger the bias. This bias may be exacerbated by fandom, but in a lot of cases, it just seems to be replicated at about the same level.

That pattern notwithstanding, it seems like you just haven't heard of a lot of ships.

To The Shire...

Summary: After saving Eddie from the Upside Down, you sit by his bedside and read to him, hoping to soothe him and bring him back to the living

Warnings: Fluffy fluff

W/C: 3.005

A/N: I loved the small snippet of Eddie talking about Mordor and The Shire, I figured a cute little snippet of Eddie and Lord of The Rings would be perfect for a Sunday Night.

"How is he looking, Doc?" You poked your head into the room as the two adults were talking together in what they assumed were hushed tones. The rest of the hallway was deserted, barely a soul out and about since it was later in the night and you were still somewhat covered in grim and some dirt. The only other people that were there were Steve, Nancy, Robin, Dustin and Lucas. They were all in the waiting room, just as disheveled and covered in dirt because of all of you narrowing escaping Vecna and the Upside Down. Hawkins was in ruins, most of it anyways, and the hospital was a bit overrun with the injured.

Your boyfriend was one of them.

It felt like slow motion seeing him almost get killed in front of your eyes, those demon bats nearly killing him and taking him away from you forever. He was protecting you and Dustin to give you time for you to go back through the gate, but you made the choice to stay behind. If you went through the gate, you knew deep down that you would have been too late to stop the bats, to save Eddie.

He would have died. But he didn’t because of your instinct to wait.

After the assault, you dragged him back to his Upside Down trailer, stopping the blood from escaping with your jacket wrapped around his chest and hips. Dustin hoisted him through and you drove to the hospital, knowing time was not on your side. The rest of the plan was going off without a hitch, and you there weren't needed.

So there you were, two hours later and hearing Eddie's Uncle talk to the doctor. You waited outside the room, not wanting to be in the way though you wish you were in there to hear all that was going on. Eddie was the only thing on your mind, even after the rest of the gan met with you and Dustin in the Waiting Room. Dustin radioed Steve and told him all that went down, the group rushing immediately once they head the news.

"He's going to be fine," The doctor replied, Wayne sighing in relief and you did too. You held your face in your hands as you were trying not to cry from the mere though of your boyfriend being so close to dying.

"The wounds he has are serious though, Wayne," The doctor explained, you perking up a bit as you heard footsteps coming your way down the hall on a laminated floor, "They're a bit deep, but they're barely away from anything severe that could have gotten him killed. The stitches will hold, but he can't do anything too crazy for some time so the skin can heal all the way over. Those two kids saved his life: if he would have came in five minutes later, we would have lost him,"

You felt hot tears in your eyes from hearing that. The realization that you had mere minutes to get Eddie help, to save him from dying in your arms, it hit you so hard and made you almost collapse. Leaning back against the wall and feeling some tears escape from between your fingers, a hand was placed on your shoulder to give you a reassuring squeeze. You sniffled as Wayne Munson walked out of the room and saw you there.

"Hey, kid," He gruffed, you shoving the tears away rapidly as you blinked up at Eddie's Uncle. He looked disheveled himself, both relieved that Eddie was alive and that he made it to the hospital with barely any time left for him.

"I-s he okay, Mr. M-Munson?" You asked sheepishly, Robin tugged your shoulder slightly next to you as Wayne sighed with a small smile on his face.

"He is," he replied, "Thanks to you and that Henderson kid, my Eddie can have a second chance. So.....thank you,"

You smiled, not being able to say anything else. Ever since you started dating Eddie one year ago, Wayne was slow to warm up to you. But he saw how Eddie adored you and treated you right, and how he was a happier teenager and had a bigger optimism on life. Wayne did like you two together, you bringing out the better habits in the trailer and how Eddie would be at home than before when you two were just friends. So to hear that from Wayne, a more secluded and introverted kind of man whom you thought would never truly accept you as Eddie's girlfriend, it meant a lot.

"He's gonna be here all night until probably tomorrow night," Wayne explained, "I'm gonna hang with him for a bit before I have to go to help rebuild the plant ---"

"I can watch him for you, Mr. Munson," you hiccuped to him, seeing him raise his eyebrows at you as you shrugged, "I...I wanna make sure he's okay. I kind of don't want to go anywhere else right now,"

"We need to get cleaned up," Robin reminded you in your ear, "He's fine here. You need to rest--"

"I can't rest until I know he's really okay," You blurted out, looking over at the opening of the room that lead to Eddie. The last thing you wanted to do was to leave and think of the worst, to not be there when he woke up, It scared you, knowing he was unconscious and healing with no one there to hold his hand.

"How about this," Wayne suggest, you looking to him now as he took in a long breath and placed his own hand on your shoulder, "I'll stay here with Eddie for a few hours, then you and I can switch when I go to the plant during the day. It'll give you some time to take a shower and change, get some rest yourself. What do ya say?"

You nodded, thinking that it was fair. Wayne would want to be with his Nephew since he too was concerned about him. As much as you wanted to be there with Eddie and have him to yourself, Wayne needed him more.

It was a compromise that you were wiling to go with.

"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places: but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows, perhaps, the greater..."

You paused, moving to stretch your back from your spot in the stiff chair as you looked up from the book in your lap. Checking your watch, it was only the third hour since your shift in watching over Eddie since Wayne went to work. You promised to call the plant if something did happen, though Wayne reassured you that Eddie was going to be fine, and he felt a bit better that you were there watching over his nephew.

Eddie was still asleep, he's been asleep since you brought him in. He looked rather peaceful in the bed, his matted and nearly damaged clothes and leather jacket was swapped with a hospital gown. The only two things you kept since you knew he would want to hang onto was his jacket and his three metal rings. The rest you could burn and Eddie wouldn't care, plus his Hellfire Club shirt was too torn and damaged to salvage.

Steve and Robin helped take you home so you could shower and change. You had to think of a good alibi with your parents since you rang off with the others from Lucas's house to elapse the cops and stop Vecna. They both were relived that you were okay, mad as hell but relived. You only had a few bumps and bruises from the whole ordeal, nothing too dangerous to worry over or to fret on as you showered. Seeing the blood and dirt go down the drain was almost cathartic for you, the last sign to be seen that it was all over.

Your parents then went off to volunteer at the high school where a shelter was being thrown up for those who lost their homes. You were kind fo glad they had faith in you to let you go again, only because you were legally an adult and they couldn't do a thing any who. So you came back in your car, letting Wayne to go home and get ready for work as you were going to watch over Eddie for a few hours.

Dustin and the other freshman friends of Eddie were going to pop by within the hour, getting you food and some other books to read. But you brought Lord of The Rings, knowing it was Eddie's favorite book to read since reading was more like a chore for him. Not with this novel, his own copy from his trailer that he would always carry with you. It was a small running joke you two shared when you first got together, the worn down book that had so many turned corners and the spin severely bent and used.

You giggled at how he would bust it out to read in the middle of class, or when he would wait for you in his van while you wrapped out your dinner with your parents to go on a date with him. He would even read you some of the passages when you two would be perched in the back fo his van, feet dangling out and parked by Lover's Lake as the sunset came through. He loved reading that book, it was one of his favorite tokens.

"What about I get you a new copy for your birthday?" You asked, seeing the discoloring on the pages and cover art. Eddie grinned and shook his head.

"No way, princess. This was the first copy I ever got from my Uncle for Christmas when I was a kid, I'll keep it until it falls apart in my hands,"

So you were holding the same book, seeing where he circled in certain passages and highlighted words that he would look up later for the meaning. It was insane, most of the book was marked and commented on with his chicken scratch writing. But it was all Eddie, a piece of his heart and his life as you watched his sleeping body for a moment in that hospital bed.

All this time you were thinking back to that moment in the Upside Down, seeing Eddie on the ground with bats biting at him and the blood coming out of his wounds slowly and painfully. You could see the light in his eyes, the same light at you fell in love with and adored from the moment Eddie asked you to be his girlfriend, slowly drifting away and hovering into the dark air. It made you scream out in worry and in fear that he was going to be lost forever, no longer in your life to bring you love and joy. Eddie was always misunderstood by other, especially by his peers who only saw him as a freak or a metalhead. There was more to him than that, you knew it most of all and to see all the sides of Eddie that were gentle and kind felt like a privilege.

A privilege that you almost lost in the Upside Down.

You were too distracted in your thoughts to hear the shuffling in the bed in front of you, a small groan that sounded almost painful and deep within the belly as you were staring down at the window on your right side.

"Don't stop there babe....that's my favorite part,"

The book fell from your lap onto the floor, your head snapping over to the bed and you saw a pair of dark brown eyes looking at you. A small flicker of life was on his cheek, along with a deep bruise and a but on his lower lip, as his hair almost shined under the hospital lights that were blaring the room. But it was his smile, the same smile that was thrown your way when you two first met in your math class that made you gasp out and feel a small tear escaping your eye and roll down your cheek.

"Eddie," you gasped in a croak. This was no dream, no sick twist of the mind and not a mind game from Vecna himself. No, this was real, very real as Eddie's smile lit up the entire room and then same. You ignored the book on the ground, moving swiftly across the small space to hover over Eddie and frame his face gently in you hands. Eddie chuckled, though it sounded more painful than before.

"Edward Munson, don't you dare scare me like that ever again, do you hear me?" You asked in both a croak and in demand. Eddie saw the pain there in your own eyes, his loving orbs poured into yours as he reached out with one hand to touch your cheek. You felt his cool calloused palm against your cheek and you sighed, leaning against the touch and kissing his skin there as you kept your glare on him.

"I'm right here, sweet girl," he hummed to you, you sighed and closed your eyes. It hurt to do that, but it was a relief to know that he was there and alive right in front of you. Touching him, breathing him in, it was more than enough and even to hear his voice brought you home again. You nodded slowly, leaning down to touch his forehead against your own as you both were embracing each other carefully. Almost silently telling each other you were alive and well. You've done this before, when Eddie was riled up on something and ended to be grounded, or when you had a rough patch at home and needed an escape. You both touched foreheads, your own way to tell the other that there was love present and nothing else mattered.

"You were almost dead back there, Eds," You hummed, not being able to stop yourself from sounding so frightened or scared in front of him, "I thought you were really going to die on me and Dustin back there."

"But I didn't, thanks to my gorgeous and badass girlfriend who covered my ass," Eddie hummed to you, having you open your eyes and look at him then. He gave you a loving stare, one he would only give you when he was really in love with you. You weakly smiled, seeing him smile back as he stuck his tender chin out to you, "You saved me back there, sweetheart. I can't thank you enough."

"None of that," you hummed, moving to traced some of his hair with your fingers as you leaned back a bit, "it’s over and done with. I did what I had to--"

Eddie leaned up and kissed you deeply as he framed your jaw in his hands, you loosing your train of thought and your breath as he kissed you from the hospital bed. Whenever you two would kiss, Eddie would give everything in that kiss. He loved kissing you, whether it was on the cheek as you walked to class together or sat together at the movies, or the seeping sensual kisses when you were in bed together wrapped up in the sheets and in each others arms. But this kiss, it was a rare kiss that spot volumes to you as he held it there longer than a regular kiss should be held.

He was telling you be loved you, and he was grateful for you.

Finally, he pulled away, nuzzling your nose for a brief moment before you opened your eyes slowly and in a dizzy way to see him with a new set of light in his cheeks and eyes. Even after nearly dying in the Upside Down, he looked like a new man and a new being. You blinked slowly as he found his voice again.

"You mean more to me than anything," He said in a low tone, sounding so serious, "I heard you...back there in the Upside Down...when I was beating up by those damn bats. I wanted to go to sleep but your voice brought me back...your voice of an angel. If I was on my deathbed again, hearing you would bring me back all over again. I'm a better guy because of you, and I can't think of myself going to the Shire without you on my arm,"

You couldn't help but chuckle from his Lord of The Rings reference. It was another joke with him when it came to that book: claiming that any sense of Heaven was actually “The Shire”. He ever believed in God, nor did you for that matter, but he thought of The Shire in the book as close to Heaven as it should be. The rolling green hills, the constant content weather and the thought of peace was always in his mind on what the afterlife would be, so it called it “The Shire”.

"I would follow you to The Shire anytime, Munson," You vowed to him, seeing the massive grin back on his face as it was you who leaned in to kiss him soundly in his bed. You were no longer going to worry about the past and what could have happened. That notion of going to "The Shire" seemed less of a threat now as you two made out in the hospital room. Being lost in your own world, just like how the world of Lord of The Rings would make Eddie lost every once in awhile. It felt the same way in that moment with him, even when you heard someone coming into the room and a groan.

"Are you kidding me?!" It was Dustin Henderson, "I bring you food and you two are sucking face?!"

Eddie never stopped kissing you, but he flipped Dusitn the bird as you grinned against his lips.

WTNV Fursonas

have you ever wondered what animal your favorite Night Vale character is? wonder no more!

a few notes: most of these will be region accurate, because the hometown vibe is a big part of the podcast. and for the purposes of keeping species fitting, I'm ignoring doubles.

Cecil is a black-tailed jackrabbit. vigilant and quick-thinking, this guy the inspiration for the jackalope, which fits the cryptid qualities of the radio host. the jackalope has antlers, which represents the ties to Huntokar.

Carlos is a North American river otter. credit to @fox-guardian for this idea, I had to go with it. clever and resourceful, this animal might seem out of place in the desert environment. fun fact though, river otters were actually reintroduced to the Verde river and now have a stable population in Arizona!

Steve is a black-tailed prairie dog. family oriented and highly dedicated to their community, this animal has been widely considered a pest in the past, but is now considered a keystone species of the southwest.

Lauren is a coyote. both extremely adaptable and efficient in finding a niche, coyotes are scavengers who are willing to do what it takes to survive in a cutthroat world.

Dana is a cliff chipmunk. they might look unassuming, but this animal is extremely agile and resourceful. they can also live for up to twelve years, and do so in very precarious situations.

Kareem is a beaver. a native of Michigan! (please pretend I'm pronouncing it as mitch-i-gan) they're hardworking and determined, able to create big things when they put their minds to it.

Kevin is a long-tailed weasel. they might look cute, but they're vicious predators who, and I quote, "have no conscious when they're hungry". they regularly threaten animals far bigger than themselves and their hunting methods are brutally efficient.

So recently I've seen some things that have inspired Stranger Things AUs I'm too lazy to write out fully, but still wanted to share, so here you go:

The kids get bored and start a game of "who gan get Hopper's gun off him the most in a week". Eddie is the only one of the teens who knows what they're doing because he gave them the grabber when asked, and spends the week avoiding Hopper to keep from laughing in his face, causing Hopper to get suspicious, and therefore more distracted, making the kids jobs easier. Just general post-end-of-the-fucking-world fluffy shenanigans where the kids get to be actual kids.

Eddie finds a shelter of the teens and kids (idk why the adults aren't here, but it's important) and offers a deal, keep him fed and he'll help protect them. Steve agrees, on the condition that Eddie only drinks from him, to much protest from the rest of the group. 50 years ago, in 1972, Robert Venturi, Steve Izenour and Denise Scott Brown published what would become a hallmark book for postmodern architecture: „Learning from Las Vegas“, a collection of studies of the Las Vegas strip carried out during a Yale research studio course. With its emphasis on the social, economic and cultural dimensions of the city the book quintessentially represented Denise Scott Brown’s approach to urban planning: already during her master studies of city planning at the University of Pennsylvania she got in contact with sociologist Herbert Gans, then teaching at Penn, whose urban sociology Scott Brown adopted. Consequently she intensively exchanged views and ideas with the urban sociologist and vice versa, an exchange that resulted in her multifocal perspective on urban and architectural forms. This is among the many aspects addressed in the recently released anthology „Denise Scott Brown: In Other Eyes - Portraits of an Architect“, edited by Frida Grahn and published by Birkhäuser: the book contains 23 chapters grouped into the sections Learning, Teaching and Designing that provide comprehensive insights into Scott Brown’s intellectual formation, the development of her methods and theoretical concepts through extensive teaching and the subsequent practical work she pursued from the 1970s on. The result is a multifaceted portrait of an architect and theorist whose work and thought finally receives its due appreciation: Denise Scott Brown is a highly original thinker who broke down intellectual and subject-specific barriers for the sake of better planning in terms of both architecture and urbanism. Simultaneously she operated in a society and profession that kept down women, a fact she criticized openly and which is also being addressed in the book.

„Denise Scott Brown: In Other Eyes” is a fabulous anthology and a thought-provoking testament to the ingenuity of an architect and theorist. At the same time the 23 essays, occasionally juxtaposed with personal recollections and perspectives, open up new views on her work that will likely stimulate additional research on DSB. A highly recommended read!

Skull the Slayer #3 (Wolfman/Gan, Jan 1976). All sorts of things have passed through the Bermuda Triangle and landed in this mysterious prehistoric land. Scully discovers robot dinosaurs and a tower where each floor is a portal to a different time period. I have no clue what this book’s trying to be. Ka-Zar meets Killraven by way of Fantastic Four? I don’t hate it.

One-Shot Wonders: Marvel Premiere no. 28

Marvel in the 70s was an exciting place to be at. It was the most turbulent time in terms of organizational management as discussed in detail here. One of the less celebrated works happens to be the line-up of monsters and other dark characters (heroes and villains) that made a huge impact on readers at the time, with some ending up as cult classics like this issue of Marvel Premiere no. 28 from 1976

While Marvel Comics published a series under the same name, this is a one-shot story about this particular Legion starring Ghost Rider, Man-Thing, Morbius, and Werewolf by Night. Afterward, this team never got together as later versions showed. However what makes this book special is the fact that at a time when Team-Up was at the height of its popularity, this was the first team-up of ‘monsters’ only to be succeeded by The Midnight Sons in the 90s

It is a painful story written by Bill Mantlo, and illustrated by Frank Robbins (both co-creators of this team along with inker Steve Gan) which sheds light on the struggle of monsters trying to overcome their bloodlust in order to become normal. Here, if one sees monsters as a metaphor, it shows people who are good by nature but carry with them excess baggage of rage, depression, and shame due to painful circumstances that have changed them forever. Outcasts in their circles and yet desperate to return to the fold of normalcy, their pain (bloodlust) takes over them ensuring that while they don’t cross the line of harming the innocents; they remain, loners with no one to help them overcome their painful struggle

It makes you wonder that the crisis today’s young males are experiencing was somewhat explored in this book, this one-shot story
