"If the alphabet soup of communist parties ever actually pivoted toward militancy (they won’t, but if they did) then they’d literally be setting themselves up for immediate repression.
Anarchy, on the other hand, is a flawed and centerless constellation of relationships, which is to say anarchy is built on affinity, trust, and reciprocal knowledge. Pittsburgh anarchist scenes are just as fragmented as the Left. It is true that “we” do struggle to sustain coordination and momentum, beyond the intermediate term. Like every movement, anarchy waxes and wanes. I couldn’t care less. Any communist or anarchist who believes that revolt in the united settler-states actually depends on the strength of “the Left” is deluding themself. Revolt happens with or without us. So rather than waste my time obsessing over the strength of some organization or ideology’s influence in a given region, I’d rather learn more projectual approaches that might contribute to conflictuality. I know some of you reading this are studying this framework as well, and I look forward to discovering your projects, wherever they may incite or strike.
To me, it makes more sense for “the movement” to refer to a circulation of tactics, skills and projects within and between radical social scenes… and that movement sure as hell doesn’t have much to do with the political organizations that fill my email’s spam folder."
Fuck PSL.

There is damage in the library, but it's not to the books or special collections. Occupiers even helped the university's archivist/special collections librarian attend to some of the special collections, so that they'd be safe.
Concerning special collections:
"The next morning [after the initial April 29 occupation of the library, April 30, special collections librarian and archivist Cris] Paschild explained who she was to protesters guarding the entrance to the library. They eventually let her in and together they worked to clear out and secure the library’s special collections.
"'They actually were really receptive and seemed to hear what I was saying and what my concerns were,' Paschild told OPB. 'I appreciated that.'"
Concerning damage to the building versus to the library collection:
"...But [PSU Operations Assistant Director Cary] Morris, who has been overseeing parts of the cleanup since Friday, noticed the library’s books were largely undisturbed.
"'The book stacks seem pretty untouched,' Morris said. 'There was a lot of graffiti and signage that said, "leave the books alone" or "don’t touch the books."'
"The university’s Dark Horse Comics collection, which had originally been reported as missing or stolen, also appeared to be intact."
I've previously posted a timeline on this topic; this article is also linked there.

COLOMBIA UNIVERSITY VIOLENTLY STORMED AND SHUT DOWN BY NYPD
📹 Scenes from the violent dispersal of Colombia University protests after police stormed "Hind Hall", named by students in memory of 6-year-old Hind Rajab who was killed by the Israeli occupation forces along with two paramedics in the Gaza Strip.
Protesters are violently assaulted and arrested by NYPD, among the most notoriously violent police in the country.
News reports meanwhile claim no tear gas was used in the raid, and say no one was injured in the assaults, video evidence to the contrary.

Israeli settlers are attacking the Christian community in Jerusalem including bishops and priests! The Christian community is literally fighting for their lives right now in the Armenian Quarter. Christians: more of you need to stand up with us against this violence! This has never been a Muslim issue. (28.12.2023)

Chancellery Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem
28 December, 2023
A MASSIVE AND COORDINATED PHYSICAL ATTACK WAS LAUNCED ON BISHOPS, PRIESTS, DEACONS, SEMINARIANS, AND OTHER ARMENIAN COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN JERUSALEM WITHINONE HOUR OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT. SEVERAL PRIESTS, STUDENTS OF THE ARMENIAN THEOLOGICAL ACADEMY, AND INDIGENOUS ARMENIANS ARE SERIOUSLY INJURED.
Over 30 armed provocateurs in ski-masks with lethal and less-than-lethal weaponry including powerful nerve-agents that have incapacitated dozens of our clergy broke into the grounds of the Cow's Garden and began their vicious assault. We stress again, several priest, deacons and students of the Armenian Theological Academy along with indigenous Armenians are seriously injured. ARMENIAN CLERICS IN JERUSALEM ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES AGAINST IMPUNE PROVOCATEURS.
This is the criminal response we have received for the submission of a lawsuit to the District Court of Jerusalem for the Cow's Garden, which was officially received by the Court less than 24 hours ago. This is how the Australian-Israeli businessman Danny Rothman (Rubinstein) and George Warwar (Hadad) react to legal procedures.
The Armenian Patriarchate's existential threat is now a physical reality. Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, and indigenous Armenians are fighting for their very lives on the ground. We are calling on authorities around the world and the International Media to help us save the Armenian Quarter from a violent demise that is being locally supported by unnamed entities. We call upon the Israeli Government and Police to start an investigation against Danny Rothman (Rubinstein) and George Warwar (Hadad) for organizing their continuous criminal attacks on the Armenian Patriarchate and Community, attacks which seem to have no end in sight.
Israel is a State of law and order and such criminal behavior cannot be tolerated and go unpunished.

Portland State University Library Occupation: 4/29/2024 - 5/2/2024
As of today (5/7/2024), the Library is still closed. Link: Portland State University Library Closure FAQ.
UPDATED 5/10/2024: Cleanup is underway; the book collection is largely unscathed, the special collections are intact and also unscathed. The damaged seems restricted to walls, furniture, and equipment like computers.
From what I've gathered from news articles, here's a timeline. As I learn more, incorrect details on this timeline will be struck out and new ones will be added.
4/25/2024 - 4/28/2024: Pro-Palestinian protestors are pushed out of a protest in the South Park Blocks area of Portland and onto a portico in Millar Library at Portland State University, with the university president's permission.
Also 4/25/2024 - 4/28/2024: Under pressure, Portland State University President Ann Cudd agrees that PSU should "reexamine its philanthropic relationship" with Boeing, a corporation with ties to the Israeli Air Force
4/29/2024: After a peaceful nearby rally in support of Palestine and an an end to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, protestors entered university's library and began to occupy it. Barricades are built and graffiti is made on the library's walls.
4/30/2024: PSU campus closed; exactly when is not clear.
5/1/2024: University President Cudd continues demands for protestors to leave the library, and also threatens a police response to remove protestors.
5/2/2024: PSU reports that negotiations between the President's office and protestors have "failed" and promises that students who leave the occupied library by 1:30am on Thursday, May 3 will not be suspended or expelled. Representatives of protestors respond that the President and her office were not negotiating in good faith, demanding the names and ID numbers of the student protestors.
5/3/2024: At 6:00am, police begin clearing the University library of protestors; they are finished by about 10:00am.
5/3/2024 - : Damage assessment and repair of Library and library materials is underway.
5/7/2024 (added 5/10/2024): OPB.com reports that, as University crews clean up the mess, the book collections, including the special collections, were not damage. Damage was limited to walls, furniture, and equipment like computers. Special collections, like the Dark Horse comics collection, previously thought to be missing, were found to be untouched.

Mario Savio giving a speech at Berkeley in 1964 during an occupation of the university.
I mistakenly labeled this as an occupation and speech against the Vietnam war. It was in fact an occupation by the Free Speech Movement, who objected to attacks on free speech and academic freedom during the cold war, when "radical" student groups were banned and faculty had to swear an anti-Communist loyalty oath or be fired. Students objected to universities being used as a source of knowledge and innovation for the military industrial complex but not being allowed to speak their minds that, which does have a lot of parallels with the current occupations.
There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart that you can't take part! You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus -- and you've got to make it stop! And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it -- that unless you're free the machine will be prevented from working at all!!

No one at UPenn would talk to CNN so they talked to a random 19 year old who wasn’t involved. Unfortunately for these bad-faith actors, the student had an informed opinion.

VIOLENT SUPPRESSION OF AMERICAN PROTESTS INTENSIFIES
📹 The heavily militarized American police continue to violently suppress student protests against the Israeli occupation's ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Police have assaulted and arrested over 900 demonstrators since April 18th, in service of the Israeli occupation and US defense contractors profiting off the genocide of Palestinians.

Palestinian educators have previously told Middle East Eye that Israeli authorities were aiming to eliminate its curriculum in favour of the Israeli version, in an attempt to erode Palestinian identity and "distort" history.
Academic content Israel has sought to censor, they said, includes the logo of the Palestinian Authority, the Palestinian flag, lessons that discuss the Palestinian struggle against occupation, the right of return and prisoners, settlements, the immigration of settlers to Palestine, military checkpoints, the intifada, displaced villages, and considering Zionism a racist political movement.
