Thomas was sat on his living room couch staring at his Lego Disneyworld castle on the coffee table. He must have been staring at it for several minutes now.
He could have sworn he heard it speak.
Was he losing his mind? Quite possibly. The voice was so clear, ringing in his mind. It had said “I miss you” of all things. Thomas wasn’t entirely sure what that meant coming from an inanimate object, but the notion unsettled him regardless.
He needed to logic his way out of this one.
He raised a hand and summoned Logan.
“Yes, Thomas?”
Thomas sighed softly. “Logan, I’m worried that I’m losing my mind.”
Logan raised a brow. “Do you have supporting evidence?”
Thomas chuckled. “Well, my Lego set just spoke to me, so that’s exhibit A.”
Logan paused for a long moment. “An inanimate object communicated with you?”
“Yeah! Crazy, right?”
Logan paused again. “Not necessarily.”
Thomas blinked. “Um… what?”
“I believe this is a subject that requires multiple points of view, so if you don’t mind, I’d like to bring the others into this discussion.”
“I mean, sure, go ahead.”
Logan summoned Patton, Virgil, and Roman.
“I’m sure you’re wondering why I’ve gathered you all here today.”
Roman sighed. “Just get to the point, Fig Neutron.”
“Apologies, I’ve just always wanted to say that. Thomas, would you like to explain the situation?”
Thomas awkwardly cleared his throat. “Um… my, uh, my Lego castle… spoke to me.”
Surprisingly, Patton smiled in delight. “That’s so exciting!”
“It’s actually a little terrifying, but… thank you?”
“So, wait, Thomas doesn’t know…?” Virgil began, trailing off mid sentence.
“It would appear that we have to explain it to him.”
Thomas was getting overwhelmed by lack of context. “Explain what?”
“Perception of object sentience, individuality, and consciousness. POSIC for short. All of us experience some form of it, and it is now likely that you do as well.”
Thomas was reeling from the fact that there was an actual term for what just happened. “Wait… so… objects talk to you guys, too?”
“So far, only one object has spoken to me, but yes,” Logan confirmed.
“I don’t really hear objects talk, but I sorta… feel what they feel,” Patton said.
“Yes, there are many different forms of communication with companions.”
“Companions?” Thomas asked.
“That’s the term used to describe an object you perceive as sentient.”
“One of my companions is my sword!” Roman declared, brandishing his sword proudly. “Its name is Alexander.”
“Oh, I have so many companions!” Patton said with a smile. “Pepper, Smokey, Sammy, Diego, Bunny, Momo, Carmen, I mean the list goes on! Oh!” Patton revealed a Tamagotchi that was on a necklace around his neck that he had hidden under his shirt. “Can’t forget my Tamagotchi, Pickles! She’s going off to college soon.” He sighed forlornly. “I’m gonna miss my little digital kiddo.”
Thomas was pretty sure Tamagotchis didn’t attend college, but decided against mentioning it.
Virgil cleared his throat. “My, uh, my headphones, my hoodie… my spider plushie.”
“Your what now?” Patton asked.
“She’s not a real spider, Patton.”
Thomas ran a hand through his hair. “I just… how did I not know any of this?”
“Well, if Janus is proof of anything, it’s that anything can be kept secret, even from our Human,” Logan pointed out.
“I mean… I guess you have a point there. Wait, is Janus… and Remus…?”
“They are POSIC, if that’s what you mean.”
“Oh, Remus has the cutest hoarde!” Patton chirped. “He almost has as many stuffed animals as I do!”
“And that’s saying something,” Virgil commented.
“Wow,” Thomas murmured. “So… I’m… POSIC?”
“Considering this is a one time occurrence, it’s hard to say,” Logan replied. “Have you tried communicating with your Lego castle since hearing it speak?”
“I… not really. I was just sorta… waiting to hear it speak again. Um… so should I… talk to my Lego’s? Never thought I’d say that.”
“Yeah!” Patton encouraged. “It may feel a little awkward at first, but you should at least try!”
Thomas took a quick breath. “Um, okay.” He looked at the castle, unsure of what to say. “So… um… how’s things?”
After a pause, he heard a very faint voice in his head. Not too bad, just lonely.
Thomas looked up at the Sides. “Did you hear that or was that just me?”
“We’re a part of you, so we heard it too,” Logan said.
“Somehow I’m not surprised that Thomas’s first companion was a Lego set,” Roman teased.
Thomas scoffed. “Ha, ha. Well… guess I, uh… have a new friend to talk to?”
“Do you have any questions about what it’s like to be POSIC?” Logan asked.
Thomas paused. “Do you know what causes it?”
“There are many different factors that could contribute to it. Autism, synesthesia, animism, psychosis, trauma, just to name a few.”
Thomas raised his brows. “Well that’s something to look into, I guess. Thanks, guys.”
“Of course.”
“This is so exciting!” Roman exclaimed. “I can’t wait to see how many companions Thomas will collect!”
“And this definitely explains why all of us are POSIC,” Logan added.
“I kinda had a feeling Thomas was POSIC,” Virgil said. “I mean… since we all are.”
“Alright, Thomas, we’ll let you and your companion get to know each other,” Patton said with a smile. His Tamagotchi suddenly began beeping. “Oh, Pickles is calling! See you kiddos later!” He sank out, fiddling with the buttons on his Tamagotchi.
“Would you look at the time? Alexander and I have a date!” Roman declared.
Thomas furrowed his brows. “A date? With your… sword?”
Roman paused. “Yes,” he answered awkwardly.
“I believe the objectum discussion should wait until the POSIC discussion fully sinks in,” Logan said.
“That sounds like a fun conversation,” Virgil said sarcastically before sinking out.
Roman chuckled awkwardly. “Yeah, I can’t help but feel I’ve made things confusing! I’m just gonna… hang out with Alexander! Farewell!” Roman sank out.
“Logan,” Thomas began. “Thanks. I really felt like I was… losing my mind.”
“I felt similarly when I first began communicating with Milo, my companion. I was… embarrassed. But I learned that it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s just something that certain people — and Sides, apparently — experience. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Thomas nodded. “I guess the human mind is pretty complex.”
“That’s putting it mildly. Now that the issue at hand seems to be resolved, I suppose it’s time for me to get back to work.”
“Before you go… may I ask who — or what — Milo is?”
Logan’s cheeks went red. “Um… it is… an empty jar of Crofters. The first jar I ever ate, in fact.”
Thomas smiled. “That’s kind of adorable.”
“No it isn’t.”
“Yes it is.”
“No it’s not, and I’m leaving now.” Logan quickly sank out, and Thomas couldn’t help but chuckle.
He looked over at his Lego castle. “Between you and me, it’s definitely adorable.”

Momotypeのあとに
翻訳した作品についていろいろ思ったり考えたりする方だけど、あまり広く話す内容ではないのでこちらに。
日本語化パッチを公開して、ありがたいことに少しずついろんな人に遊んでも洗えている感触がある。インディーゲームファン、SF愛好者、哲学好き、ヤンデレクラスタ、Vtuberの方々など。感想も反応もそれぞれで、たまに刺さる人には深々と刺さっているのを見かける。
この作品にはすこし、ひとを傷つけるところがある。私たちは望みもしないのに選択肢を通じてモモを傷つけ、モモに傷つけられる。
それは、かなり抽象的にかわいくデフォルメされているけれど、だれかの切実な傷から生まれた作品だからだろう。
インディーゲームにはたまに、個人的な痛みをゲームを通じてプレイヤーに体験させるような作品がある。幾多の失敗とともにトゲだらけの山を登っていくCelesteや文字通り体を引き裂きながら前に進むThe MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memoriesのトランスジェンダーの方の自己受容の痛み、Night in the Woodsの不安定なモラトリアムと衰退に沈む地域の痛み。
Momotypeもそれらに連なる作品の一つであり、プレイする人に傷をつけるような翻訳ができていたらいいなと思う。仮想の傷と痛みを通じて、作者とプレイヤーは少しだけつながり、なにかを思うきっかけになれたらいいと思うので。
やさしく愛することも、愛せないと真摯に悩むことも、その先に和解を見ることも、そもそもモモに興味を持たないことも、悩みに哲学的・SF的意味を見出すこともどれも等しく価値あることだから。
Momotypeをほぼ一人で開発したRimtoad氏（音楽とプログラムは別の方）はいま、SNSもホームページもなくなり連絡がつかない。それでいいのだと思う。Momoの最後のように、見えない広い水域へと旅立っていってくれたのなら。
連絡がとれるうちに日本語化パッチをつくれてよかった。MomotypeはSteamでも「圧倒的に好評」の評価の高い作品になった。そして私はImitato Corp.の社員のように、日本のプレイヤーの間でMomotypeがどのように受容されていくのか見続けている。

Brief Personality: Uru is a very loud and confident guy, He often gives off a sense of superiority but it’s mostly an act to protect himself, He tends to act like he doesn’t care about anyone or anyone’s opinions but in reality he does, He also tends to make himself out to be a dumb bimbo when in reality he’s actually quite smart. He’s also a bit of a slut. Good for him, he deserves it.
Brief Backstory:
Uru was abandoned by his birth parents on the side of the road when he was around 5 or 6, he was picked up pretty quickly by his first set of.. “adoptive parents”.. “The Oracles of the Sun” were a religious cult based in Okutama, he was adopted by the two Leaders of the cult and raised as their own. Uru was seen as divine or a gift from the gods, due to his “unusual” looking appearance (His purple eyes, and blond hair.) little did they know he wasn’t magical, just a normal kid who happened to have some abnormal traits.. like.. most kids in the Okutama area..
But nonetheless he was treated as otherworldly. The only person in the cult who really treated him the same was his best friend, Atsu. Atsu was born on the same day as Uru and also was an orphan.. though he wasn’t as lucky as Uru to have any set of parents..
Him and Atsu use to play all day together with their toys creating stories about people from the outside world.. But as you can Imagine Uru’s life was not all sunshine and rainbows, he dealt with allot of abuse by the hands of his “parents”.. The cult used almost every type of abuse imaginable as a tactic of control.
Eventually, however, this caught up with them, and the Asahara’s were arrested, Uru was separated from Atsu for a time and out with another family.
This family was.. not much better.. They were the type to only have foster kids for the money that came with it, they expected nothing but perfection from him. Everything about him was controlled to the minuscule detail.
At home, it was abuse, at middle school it was bullying, He felt like he could never escape just the aching feeling he always had.
He fell in love with a boy in middle school, but even that turned out to be a sexually abusive mess..
So, finally had enough of everyone treating him like shit when he got to high school. He changed his entire appearance, dying his hair, getting new clothes, He was completely unrecognizable from his former self.
His friends finally got him away from his abusive home and he was able to move in with his then boyfriend Otoko. Which he eventually married.
