I’m only 40 pages into The Atlas Six and I have gotten vibes from all of them.
Are they:
- Asshole vibes (possibly but not the jerk wad assholes that I hate— at least yet. I’m feeling out people)
- lgbt vibes (yes. No question. Literally one has been said and one hinted but all of them just yes)
I’m also trying to avoid spoilers but not enough to block tags. Like I will go into tags for general character things but for plot? I scroll like the wind.

My Mechanical Romance | Book Review
Author: Alexene Farol Follmuth
Genre: YA Contemporary
Publisher: Macmillan
Release Date: 23/06/2022
Rating: 3.75/5 🌟🌟🌟💫
Synopsis:
Bel would rather die than think about the future. College apps? You’re funny. Extracurriculars? Not a chance. But when she accidentally reveals a talent for engineering at school, she’s basically forced into joining the robotics club. Even worse? All the boys ignore Bel—and Neelam, the only other girl on the team, doesn't seem to like her either. Enter Mateo Luna, captain of the club, who recognizes Bel as a potential asset—until they start butting heads. Bel doesn’t care about Nationals, while Teo cares too much. But as the nights of after-school work grow longer and longer, Bel and Teo realize they've made more than just a combat-ready robot for the championship: they’ve made each other and the team better. Because girls do belong in STEM.
Review:
TW//: misogyny
I quite enjoyed this novel, but in all honesty it isn’t anything to wax on about! It is your typical run of the mill contemporary YA coming of age story with a romantic side plot!
I like the fact that the story for the most part focuses primarily on engineering and robotics than the romance. I also liked the honest depiction of female friendship dynamics, and that it wasn’t fodder for the “not like the other girls” trope! The “slow-burn” camaraderie between Bel and Neelam was so heartwarming to witness!!
Overall, it’s a very short, sweet, and wholesome story about a girl navigating her way through stem (and love)!
nb: I listened to the audiobook and the narrators did a phenomenal work. definitely recommend checking out the audiobook if that’s your preferred reading choice/if your library has it!

types of fantasy subgenres - writing help
high / epic fantasy - a genre of fantasy that holds its own world and creatures. examples of this could be J.R.R. Tolkien's LOTR, or C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia
low fantasy - a genre where there are regular magical happenings in "our" world—such as a magical school, or people with magical abilities. this could be found in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, or Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away
urban fantasy - essentially low fantasy, only it takes place in an urban setting such as a big city. an example of this is Cassandra Clare's City of Bones
sword and sorcery - fantasy that is centred around swords, magic, and witchcraft. it is a subgenre of high fantasy. a book is Robert E. Howard's Conan series
dark fantasy - fantasy elements mixed with horror. The Atlas Six, by Olivia Blake
fable - a story with a moral lesson
arthurian fantasy - anything derived from the tales of King Arthur (the Sword in the Stone, etc.)
crosswords fantasy - essentially where the main character crosses between their world and a fantasy world. an example of this could be Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland
dragon fantasy - what it sounds like.
historical fantasy - a cross between the historical fiction and low fantasy subgeneres. it could be set in a royal court filled with goblins, for example, in a time that was once present on earth.

Book 1 only for all of these.
Humans are weird, I have the data by Betty Adams
Clean Sweep by Illona Andrews . This is a complicated one genre wise, because there are vampires and werewolves and witches, but they're from alien planets, werewolves are the result of genetic modification, vampires have advanced tech, etc. So fantasy would make sense too?
Cluster by Piers Anthony
Proxima by stephen baxter
Prime Suspects: A Clone Detective Mystery by Jim Bernheimer
The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake
Nova Express William Burroughs,
Famous Men Who Never Lived by K Chess
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
The Supernaturalist by Eoin Colfer
Reset by Sarina Dahlan
Omnitopia dawn by Diane Duane
The Dreaming Void by peter Hamilton
Valor's Choice (Huff, Tanya)
Eye to Eye (Jinks, Catherine)
Revan (Karpyshyn, Drew)
Babel (Kuang, R.F.)
The Wandering Earth (Liu, Cixin)
The Merchant of Death (MacHale, D.J.)
Maybe Next Time (Major, Cesca)
The Host (Meyer, Stephenie)
Cloud Atlas (Mitchell, David)
Wild Massive (Moore, Scotto)
Nyxia (Reintgen, Scott )
Revelation Space (Reynolds, Alastair)
Robots vs. Fairies (Parisien, Dominik)
We Are Legion (We Are Bob) (Taylor, Dennis E.)
Spin (Wilson, Robert Charles)
Artifice (Woolfson, Alex)
Androne (Worrell, Dwain)
hello! many of these are queued.
the following are in formats or genres that I’m not currently accepting for this blog:
Ted Chiang’s Stories of Your Life and Others is a collection of (very good) non-linked short fiction.
R.F. Kuang’s Babel is fantasy.
Robots vs. Fairies (ed. Parisien and Wolfe) is a collection of non-linked short fiction.
Alex Woolfson’s Artifice is a graphic novel.
and I had questions about the following:
Olivia Blake’s The Atlas Six appears to be fantasy — is there something in later books that would make it science fiction?
William S. Burroughs, Nova Express — you said book 1 only, but Nova Express is book 2 of The Nova Trilogy. did you want Nova Express specifically or did you want book 1, The Soft Machine?
Liu Cixin, The Wandering Earth — this appears to be the title of a short fiction collection containing the title story. has the story itself been published in standalone format (outside of a magazine/similar)? if so, could you or someone else point me towards it?
D.J. MacHale, The Merchant of Death — while parallel worlds are integral to the Pendragon books, my impression is that the handling of them (and of travel between them) is primarily fantastic rather than scientific/science-fictional. could you, or someone else, clarify the extent of the science fiction aspects of the series?

reading on a cruise ship is unmatched
started and finished The Atlas Six over winter break and I can't say I was a huge fan. I don't plan on reading the sequel, The Atlas Paradox, but I'm glad I gave this series a shot!

16 for the ask thing!
16) What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
The Atlas Six by Olivia Blake. It's the last time I read anything with a "tiktok sensation!!!" tag used to promote it. There is a post on my dash right now reminding me that just because I disliked a piece of media it doesn't mean it's bad, but my god this was the worst of the year and I mean it in both enjoyment and quality way. I get why people like it but I do not get thinking it is a technically well executed book.
Thanks for the ask!

#𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐕𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐃.  "Look, the moment you became my friend, you became my problem," Nico told him, and then, realizing what he’d said, he amended, "Or, you know, mine. Or whatever."
Traces of magic were known to spill, too, if he wasn’t paying attention, and his presence already had a tendency to reshape the landscape around him, sometimes forcing things out of the way.
Nico would have been ideal, given that he seemed to be a powerhouse of energy. The magic radiating from him was more refined than any Tristan had ever seen, and he’d seen quite a lot in his capacity as an investment analyst.
indie. private and very selective nico de varona from olivia blake’s the atlas six. heavily headcanon based. powered by sasha.

Romance Readathon tbr! ❤️📚
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey guys! I’ll be participating in @princessofbookaholics’ Romance Readathon this year as well!
So, at the beginning of the year, I wanted to get through some more fantasy books. Luckily, with some research, the books I’ve picked have some form of romance! Here’s what I’m planning to read:
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn (audiobook) - Prompt: Read a romance that’s part of a series
The Atlas Six by Olivia Blake - Prompt: Read a romance that’s part of a series
You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao - Prompts: Read a romance by a bipoc author, Read a romance with any pastel color on the cover.
Graceling by Kristin Cashore - Prompt: Read a romance that’s part of a series
Currently, Legendborn and The Atlas six were already on my reading list but four seems to be my favourite number at this point, so I added two more books! I’m on chapter 10 of Legendborn and it’s really good so far! I’ll be sharing my thoughts on another post 😊
Graceling is one series that has been on my tbr for a while, but last year, I finally managed to get hold of the trilogy! I love these UK covers. I’ve heard so many good things about the series, so I’m excited!
I know You’ve Reached Sam is going to break my heart but it’s always good to have a little cry lol.
Hope you guys read some awesome books during the readathon! ❤️
