As a follow up to my favorite books of the first quarter of the year, here are some of my favorites from April, May, June! In no particular order, just in the order I read them.
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty is a fun, pirate fantasy adventure featuring one of my recently realized favorite tropes: getting the band back together. A retired female pirate just wants to live a quiet life raising her young daughter, when she is recruited to rescue the child of a former crewmate. She must reunite with her old crew and save the day. Killer cover, fun story.
Chlorine by Jade Song is a coming of age body horror novel about a teenaged girl who will do anything to become a mermaid. Slow burn- you know what will happen from the beginning, but it's a deep dive into the mind of this queer young swimmer to watch her get there.
Malice by Keigo Higashino is a Japanese novel translated by Alexander O. Smith about a detective determined to uncover the motive behind the murder of a famous novelist. Loved this why-done-it.
We See Each Other: A Black, Trans Journey Through TV and Film by Tre'vell Anderson is a nonfiction exploration of Black trans representation in pop culture and history, as well as moments from the author's own life. Looks at everything To Wong Foo to Pose to Survivor.
Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones is the second book in the Indian Lake Trilogy. SGJ is my favorite horror author but his work and ESPECIALLY these books are not for everyone. People either love or hate this series and what can I say? I get it. Graphic here.
VenCo by Cherie Dimaline is about a young Indigenous woman who has to go on an adventure with her unusual and elderly grandmother after she discovers that she's one of seven witches to usher in a new era of power.
Madame Restell by Jennifer Wright is a nonfiction book about a famous abortionist in pre-Gilded Age New York. I found it fascinating, if not incredibly depressing, with how much we recycle the same arguments over and over again. Great read. Trigger warnings for this one, from childbirth to abortion to racism to misogyny.
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati is a Greek mythology retelling on the titular murderer. As a Clytemnestra apologist, I really liked this. I kind of think so many of Greek retellings these days are all very similar, in writing style & theme so I feel like if you've read one of these recent retellings you've read them all, but I liked it!
Hamra & the Jungle of Memories by Hanna Alkaf is a Little Red Riding Hood retelling set in modern Malaysia, where a girl in a red hijab must help a tiger return to his human form. Really a beautiful story about humanity, grief, and what it means to make mistakes. Also just a fun adventure. Loved it. Graphic here.
You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron is another final girl horror novel. Look, I'm gonna read all of them and I'm gonna love all of them! You give me a final girl and I'm gonna eat it up. You give me a queer Black final girl trying to survive the night at her camp recreating a famous (fictional) horror movie while trying to protect her girlfriend? Yum, yum, yum.
Honorable mentions: Ayoade on Top is Richard Ayoade's definitive tome on the Gwenyth Paltrow film View From the Top. Get the audiobook for this one for sure! The Three Dahlias is a fun cozy mystery, and Saint Juniper's Folly is a fun queer modern fantasy adventure.

3!
OH HI there :D
3. What were your top five books of the year?
OH ok so in no actual order cos id sit here for 3 hours debating the order :D
There is a trend here with nonlinear storytelling and also books with footnotes which Im not surprised by
Howls Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
its. its great its howls moving castle. i dont know what more i could say just that i wish i would've read it sooner lmao. i knew i was gonna adore the book and Sophie and Howl and everything and i was right :D
Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield
i adore the atmosphere of the book, the like eerie slowbun horror of the ocean. i read it at the beginning of the year and thinking about the book again really makes me want to read more sci fi/magical realism horror
Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
Epistolary Novel with footnotes and its about Faeries? Absolutely no wonder that i enjoyed it so much. It also made me very nostalgic, and reminded me of listening to the Lore podcast and a bunch of podcasts about fae when i took the bus home after school :D
Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett
ive been making my way thru the Discworld books (very slowly) and honestly, i could fill the top 5 list just with Discworld books, so I limited myself to one. And Reaper Man has got to be the book I still think about the most (both in the "I am staring at the wall at 1 am thinking about the Morris dance" and "Goddamit Terry" when I figured out a new hidden joke)
The Day Death Stopped by Rebecca Thorne
I found Rebecca Thornes work this year thanks to her Tomes and Tea series and while I Adore the series and cant wait for the 3rd book, The Day Death Stopped is tailor-made for me specifically. Non-linear storytelling, Footnotes, witches, complicated soulmates-but-not-really/were supposed to hate each other but now that I know you, i don't type relationship. it just feels like that was made specifically for me (also ace main character :D)

The Rise of Magical Entrepreneurs: A Spellbinding New Era of Innovation and Opportunity
Ladies, gents, and magical creatures of all kinds, prepare to be dazzled! The wizarding world is abuzz with an entrepreneurial spirit, and we're here to give you the inside scoop on this enchanting new era of innovation and opportunity. Thanks to the Ministry of Magic and the mesmerising Wizarding Business Act, these ambitious wizards and witches are revolutionising our community, and we simply can't keep quiet about it!
First up, we have the potion-making prodigy, Plutonium Jones. This talented young entrepreneur has bewitched us all with his groundbreaking company, Potions by Plutonium. Ever since he could hold a wand, Jones has been concocting magical potions that have captured the hearts and minds of witches and wizards everywhere. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Prophet, Jones unveiled his plans to further expand his enchanting empire and bless us with even more potions (Daily Prophet, 12th February 1982). "I believe in pushing the boundaries of potion-making and sharing my creations with the magical community," says Jones. "The support from the Ministry has been invaluable." Plutonium Jones, you've got us under your spell!
Not only have these entrepreneurs captivated the potion market, but they've also enchanted our taste buds! Enter the delightful duo of Matilda and Millie Macaroon, sisters and founders of the ever-popular Macaroon's Magical Confections. With their enchanting sweets and charming personalities, these two are a force to be reckoned with. A recent article in the British Wizarding Food Review highlights their incredible journey, from humble beginnings in a tiny kitchen to becoming the sensation they are today (British Wizarding Food Review, January 1982). Matilda shares their story: "We wanted to bring something unique and delightful to the wizarding world, and that's when we discovered our passion for magical sweets. It's been an incredible journey, and we're so grateful for the support we've received."
And who could forget Sarah Johnson, the brilliant mind behind the ever-popular bookshop, Magic and More? Her love for literature and her extensive knowledge of all things magical have transformed her charming little shop into a must-visit destination for wizards, witches, and bookworms alike. As mentioned in Magical Books: A Comprehensive Guide, Magic and More is your go-to destination for fascinating reads and captivating conversations about the latest magical developments (Higgins, 1981). Sarah Johnson shares an anecdote, "I once had a young wizard come into the shop, searching for a rare tome. After hours of scouring the shelves, we found it, and the look of joy on his face made all the effort worth it." Sarah Johnson, you've written a new chapter of success!
Speaking of success, let's not forget Sirius Black's Black Moon Tattoos, a tattoo parlour nestled in the heart of Knockturn Alley. In an interview with Wizarding Tattooist Monthly, Sirius shares the story of how his passion for body art led him to open his own tattoo parlour (Wizarding Tattooist Monthly, November 1981). "I've always been fascinated by the way tattoos can tell stories and express who we are as individuals," he says. "Opening Black Moon Tattoos has allowed me to share my passion for magical body art with the world." Sirius, your artistic vision has left a permanent mark on the wizarding world!
Now, you're probably wondering who's responsible for this magical entrepreneurial boom. Well, look no further than our very own Ministry of Magic. The Wizarding Business Act has made it easier than ever to start and run a business in the wizarding world, providing easier access to capital, grants, and supporting small businesses and startups like never before. The Department of Magical Economics and the Innovation and Development Department have joined forces to provide resources and assistance to these visionary entrepreneurs, enabling them to conjure up new products and services that have improved our lives and generated significant profits.
But don't just take our word for it! Let's hear from an expert in the field. The esteemed Professor Miranda Fiddlesticks from the Wizarding Academy of Higher Education had this to say about the current state of wizarding entrepreneurship: "The Wizarding Business Act has ushered in a new age of innovation and opportunity. By streamlining the process of starting and running a business, the Ministry has enabled a new generation of magical entrepreneurs to flourish. This is truly an exciting time for the wizarding world."
So, to all our talented and ambitious witches and wizards out there, we encourage you to dream big and pursue your passions. After all, who knows? You could be the next Plutonium Jones or Matilda Macaroon! And to our magical community, let's rally behind these inspiring entrepreneurs and support their endeavours. Together, we can make the wizarding world an even more magical place to live.
That's all for now, folks! Keep your wands at the ready for more spellbinding stories and updates from your favourite magical magazine. Remember, the world of magic is ever-changing, and we're here to keep you in the loop. Stay tuned, and as always, let the magic guide you!

This is the critical moment of transformation.  This is the moment Ben and his subconscious demons, his 7 sins, see each other face to face.  Here Ben's subconscious materializes as the book takes control of him... .."But also because Ben’s demons, monsters, sins, layers of existence, were there.  And they were watching it all happen, as they seemed now unmoved by the event.  Vegetation was being demolished.   Rocks, pebbles and all debris were flying around joined to the violent spiral.  The corkscrew motion expanded and became more intense as the air turned electrified and filled with energy beams from the book. And not even the time-traveling witch with her magic wand could bring him down and stop the funnel of air from reaching above the crowns of trees.  As soon as she took out her wand from inside her cloak, then this one was repelled by the energy of The Verum Codex that filled the air.   Elradon’s staff also struggled to resist the magic in the air, as this one was also rejected by the chaotic nature of the ancient tome.  The red-headed girl tried to talk him down, because she witnessed that magic was not working here.   Red saw that Ben was lost, even inside that column of electrified air; but she wouldn’t give up on him, not at all, because she knew how much he was changing and how confused about it he really was. And so, it happened that Ben peered down through the shafts of energy and the violent air and met her eyes; but he did not speak, not one word.  “Ben!” she called over the loud wind currents.  “I know you can hear me!  I need you to be with me now!” Benjamin Jones just stared at her, his eyes glowing red, his facial expression cold and austere.  And no one really knew what he was thinking.   Inside the air funnel, his body was flashed with energy branches; but there was no pain or sorrow, only transformation.  His demons looked down at her as well, then got near her, and attracted by the speech they were now studying her carefully. She took a few steps back and eyed the dark creatures with certain apprehension, then continued to talk to him, “I imagine you’re turning into something more!  I-I dunno what that is, but I’m really afraid for you; because I care, and because I want you to be safe!” Elradon, who had been observing Ben and Ben’s demons closely, held on tight to his staff and pressed forward now, then he stopped by Red and spoke, “Ben!  I’m not upset!  I understand now!” Then he took his time and regarded each sin or demon hovering around and above them.  He remained calmed and confident, then continued,  “These!  These are you, aren’t they?!  You have struggled too much, my boy!  You must control yourself, because we must keep on the journey!” Then Red, seeing that Ben showed no signs of coming back down or even responding, took a few steps forth carefully, and struggling with the strong wind currents she finally said,  “Please, whatever is going on, you must come down!  We need you!  Don’t let the book control you!  You are good!  Remember that!” And then the time-traveling witch, who had stayed behind long enough, was now watching all the near area of the forest; and so, she became sad as her eyes fell on the destruction the strong wind currents and branching beams of energy had caused.  Nature was sacred for her. Nature was the origin of life for her.  She loved Mother Nature, and this certainly weighed heavily upon her heart.  And Arleas, the green cat to her side, sensed her resolve immediately and started to hiss in discontent. But the witch ignored the trapped targoblin and proceeded forth.  She wasn’t happy with Ben, and so she began to whisper under her breath and into the wind.  Her hands thrust forward, feeling the charged air, measuring the black magic mixed with the white one."... BOOKS
I remember everything: Life lessons from Dawson’s Creek by Erin Hensley and Julia Callahan [This is very readable and conversational in style, if a bit judgy at times. Spot on about Dawson being the worst. Best when giving the love to Pacey and Joey.
Buffy the Vampires Slayer: Season 8 - (The Long Way Home, No Future for You, Wolves at the Gate, Time of Your Life, Predators and Prey, Retreat, Twilight, Last Gleaming). [Good on the re-read although the issues with it being too OTT remain. It does have some excellent moments. (The opening arc, the chain), I get why it was the case, but Spike takes too long to be bought into the story and I still don’t get why you-know-who became Twilight.]
Buffy the vampire slayer: myth, metaphor & morality by Mark Field - [its a good read. A blog put into book form. It probably really needed some editing to make it more 'bookish' and fix all the "no spoilers" nonsense. But he has a good perspective on the show and i even learnt a couple of new things. For the price, highly recommended]
Buffy meets the Academy: essays on the episodes and scrips as texts edited by Kevin K. Durand
Coraline by Neil Gaiman - short, sweet in a lightly terrorfying kind of way. Cats don't need names because they know who they are.
Sweet Dreams: The story of the new romantics by Dylan Jones - very wordy, over-written (if a huge tome of mostly third-party quotes can count as being over-written), and lacking in focus. it tries to tell the story of the New Romantic era and the significant influence it had on music in the 1980s, but the use of quotes (680 pages of them!) and the overlapping (and sometimes contradictory) reminisences from a long cast of participants is a hard slog.
The Outlaws Scarlett & Browne by Jonathan Stroud - a very readable opening book of a new series. It's fast-paced, page-turner fantasy/dystopian story set in a wild Britain after some kind of catastrophe (that is not explained). Scarlett and Albert are an interesting pair, very different from one another and both with largely unexplored backstories. There is much more to explore in subsequent books.
The Sad Ghost by Lize Meddings - not my cup of tea. I get what it was trying to do re anxiety and such but I just thought the execution was really off and the message wrong?
The Boys Club by by Michael Warner - so good. a must for every AFL fan. Great game, shame about the corrupt, controlling, power hungry people that run it. The only hope is a future CEO that believes in the separation of powers, transparent governance and a genuine love of the game.
Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski - another good read in the Witcher series, much of which is featured in the first season of The Witcher (Netflix), I did get a bit confused at times but it all comes together for a ripper of an ending.
One of us is lying - by ?? - fast paced, multi-perspective that is engrossing and intreaguing. Loved it!
One of us is next - by ?? - not as good as the original sequel to one if us is lying. Its over-written and never overcomes the fact that its not about the original bayview 4. Disappointing.
Sylvester (or the Wicked Uncle) by Georgette Heyer. The best book. I love this one so much. Read it every year. Never gets old. Perfection.
The Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski - Very good! Inspired by season 2 of the Witcher to pick the series back again and very impresses with the translation to screen. Very readable and so good to get to know the characters more closely.

Unwanted
This is the sequel to Weakness, the first Dio oneshot I posted here. Lord knows how long I had this thing in my files. I think it was 9 or 10 days? I had writer’s block and college had me in a chokehold, so I lost track of time. I was actually thinking about how I should end this for days now, and here we are. I rushed the ending, to be honest, so I still hope you guys enjoy it somehow.
warning: mentions of blood, minor swearing, huge spoilers for Part 3, another very long oneshot, and a lot of references to the oneshot preceding this
Note: I deliberately used Dio as his human side and DIO as the current one with the insane god complex.
                                            ════ ⋆★⋆ ════
Dio Brando—no, DIO stood at the peak of humanity; transcending its mortal existence entirely. The moment he received his Stand from an old crone, the idea of anyone opposing the charismatic and powerful vampire was inconceivable. Foolish, even, in the eyes of his most loyal followers. The man couldn't care less for the corpses and blood that trailed after his every step nor for those who swore undying fealty with lips pressed to his shoes in a kiss of fear and reverence. Every word that rolled off his tongue is law and grace combined, akin to religious faith with its own avid believers and devotees. A mere touch is denied and unattainable, something that no one could even work hard for, unless it was to satiate his more carnal desires. If anything, men and women either feared or admired him. On more than one occasion, it was both. A god among men, they say.
So, why is one measly photograph enough to chill the blood in his veins and falter the confidence in his stride?
Enya watched her master with obvious curiosity. Her fingers gripped her cane tighter the longer DIO stared at the developed image. The old woman assumed that her lord, almighty and fearsome, stewed in cold rage. Never had she seen him cower from terror nor lose his composure. It was unimaginable. Enya discarded the notion and did not bother to ask questions. No one dares question him, after all.
His fingers curled, knuckles discreetly trembling from the force, and nearly crumpled the poor thing in his hand. To the untrained eye, his focus remained on the two prominent figures of Jotaro Kujo, a teenager donning a high school uniform with the addition of his unusual cap and a large chain hanging on the collar, and the latter's grandfather Joseph Joestar whose clothes resembled that of some human adventurer—Indiana Jones, was it? DIO didn't care to know and never will. He gave little thought to those men. Not even the two Stand users that left his ranks and became traitors once the Joestars took the implanted fleshbuds off their foreheads.
What caught his attention was the face of a woman who seemed to be in her early twenties. She stood next to Jotaro with her arms crossed and her gaze focused on the horizon. The grim smile and the hardened resolve in her eyes made her look more alive in the photo than what DIO wanted. The tension in her expression contradicted the ease in her posture, marked by her lax shoulders and dainty fingers paused midway from drumming against her arm. She brought unwanted memories of blood and weakness, ones he thought he buried long ago after a century of isolation.
It was you. The same eyes, nose, lips, skin, hair—even the damn way you held yourself. The glaring similarities between the woman in his memories and the woman engraved in the film rattled him to the core. DIO never believed in the supernatural before he became one himself. Although, he thought that reincarnation was an idiotic concept born from those who cannot accept that death and the afterlife were the end of all things. Yet, there you are; a painful reminder of his former humanity. The turmoil that wrapped itself around his mind added to the phantom throb of his heart from when he was still human.
His glare intensified, easing his grip on the spirit photograph. DIO doesn't want to alarm Enya nor any of his underlings. He loathed appearing weak and undignified; giving them an opportunity to ambush him should he let his guard down.
The photo fluttered next to a broken camera, smashed to pieces with a chop of his hand, on the table with a huff from the imposing man. Moonlight spilled through the windows and bathed him in its luminescence; his shadow swallowed by the darkened areas of the room where the light would never reach. The fury burned bright in his eyes, yet Enya noticed something else—an emotion indecipherable and foreign. She never had the chance to mull about it, because DIO turned on his heel and walked towards the stairs with an unnatural grace and elegance in his gait.
“It seems that fate is upon us,” he told no one in particular; his smooth, honeyed voice carried across the expanse of the lobby. "I shall retire to my room for the night. Do not disturb me."
DIO didn't need to say any more. The underlying threat in his words told Enya everything. If anything, this decision served to confuse the witch doctor more. Her master always ridiculed the Joestars, either with a scoff or a mocking laugh, in their quest every time he checked their progress to send in the next Stand user. Tonight, he barely uttered an insult nor a snide comment. She wordlessly watched him disappear around the bend, then sighed.
"Oh, Lord Dio… What troubles you so?"
The heavy thud of a closed door echoed in DIO's ears; magnified by the lifeless expanse of his room. His feet absent-mindedly led himself to sit on one of the armchairs across a small table where a golden goblet accompanied a bottle of wine. With a practiced motion, his fingers curled around the stem of the goblet as he poured himself a drink with his other hand. His vacant gaze remained on the red liquor flowing into his cup; lost in memories and possibilities that tortured him for a century.
DIO never did forgive himself for allowing you to die.
He had his chance. He could have turned you into a vampire like himself when he held you in that castle. He could have given you an opportunity to live life with him; his abiding presence a gift to compensate for the time he left you after he gained immortality. He could have given you unimaginable freedom—to see civilization evolve and change before your eyes, to live in a time where you two would be the only constants in the world. DIO could have taken you with him during that lonesome century to be beside him when the coffin was opened. He could see the silent admiration in your gaze if you were to travel the world with him as he searched for a way to attain Heaven. Knowing that you had never traveled outside of London, DIO would have gladly taken you to anywhere you wanted and wished. You could have been the one sitting across from him at this very moment. He could imagine a thick tome in your hands and the curious gleam in your eyes as you carefully flipped pages, as if they would break under the slightest pressure of your touch. You had never held a book before since girls were rarely educated then, and DIO was certain you would have loved to read.
If it wasn't for the fact that he respected your dying wish, DIO could have lived the rest of his life with you.
The bottom of the bottle harshly slammed against the wooden surface. Hairline cracks crept across the glass bottle due to his vice grip, knuckles turning pale from the force. His jaw clenched, teeth gnashed and bared, as he brought the rim of the goblet to his lips. Your disappointed frown flashed across his mind; the faint memory of your hands gently taking away the bottle from his grasp consumed his senses. DIO could feel your fingers brush against his wrist as you pulled him to the spare room in your house; the one which once belonged to your parents. The slur in his voice was painfully obvious, yet you never pried for the reasons that caused him to drink so much. That soft smile still graced your features, even when you faced his alcohol-induced outbursts of rage and annoyance. It burned itself into his mind even after all these years. DIO brought the untouched wine back to the table as fingers buried themselves in his hair.
He couldn't even bring himself to drink away his thoughts of you.
"Useless," he muttered, tipping his head back against the cushion. He closed his eyes with a grunt. A thunderous roar shook the floors of the castle as he slaughtered zombies who dared laid their greedy hands on your corpse. Blood—your blood—smeared his skin, stains that still haunted him for eternity, and it was everywhere. His hands desperately reached for you, your dead body clutched by that damnable blond who accompanied Jonathan, as he fell from the balcony—
"I, DIO, being pathetic and weak?" He spat, feeling pinpricks of pain blossoming in his clenched fists. "Forget your humanity. Forget Dio Brando. Forget her."
DIO found himself spending the remnants of the night wallowing in memories of you, until the light of dawn peeked through his curtains.
                                           ════ ⋆★⋆ ════
Your smile greeted him the following night.
In the solace of his room, DIO traced a sharp nail against the photo that held your beaming expression: eyes alight with laughter and lips pulled into that godforsaken smile. Your fingers brushed your mouth, paused in the middle of hiding the aforementioned smile behind your hand. You shared the same name as her. Two cameras lie broken on the table along with a photo—disregarded and forgotten—of the Joestar group riding camels through the Saudi Arabian desert. He didn’t care for the others laughing beside you.
What mattered was the bitter throb of his heart that shouldn’t even be possible for someone who claimed to have triumphed over his humanity.
"Dio!" He could hear your scandalized gasp ring clear in the country air. A hand covered the smile on your lips as you laughed out loud, brushing off the strands of hair that stuck to your face. Water soaked the cuffs of your sleeves and your collar, but you didn’t mind. “I can’t believe you did that!”
Neither did Dio, but there he was: water from the nearby stream trickling down his fingers and a smug smirk stretching from one ear to another. He huffed, shaking the water off his hands, “You forget that I’m not some stuck-up aristocrat who can’t have fun.”
“True,” you hummed, wiping your hands on your skirt. “Then again, it has been a while since we spent time together like this.”
You lifted your apron to wipe off the water on your face when a handkerchief softly rubbed against your cheek. Dio, who was surprised at his own gentle ministrations, continued to dab the water off as if it was routine; his thumb ghosting your heated skin through the thin cloth. The scarlet flush blooming across your cheeks and tinting your ears made his smirk widen, if that was possible. You sputtered your gratitude, yet adamantly tried to evade the touch of his handkerchief as you held your apron in an iron grip. Dio could only laugh at your expense, his heart thundering and his own cheeks the slightest bit warm.
A resounding crash stole him away from the memory. The bright, blue sky and its cotton-wisp clouds faded from view; the bleak, ornate walls of his room in their place. The light of the sun was replaced with streaks of moonlight slipping through the cracks of his curtains and cascading down the floor. It was only then did DIO realize the crinkled edge of the photograph in his hand, the glittering shards scattered on the ground, and the wine that dripped from the wall to pool around the fragments of what once was a glass bottle. The quiet of the room was broken by three, quick knocks and a voice asking the man of his condition with an unmistakable, underlying tone of concern. DIO recognized the voice to be one of his most loyal subordinates, Vanilla Ice.
“What happened? Is something the matter, Lord Dio?”
A low growl rumbled in his chest. DIO closed his eyes, stopping time and pocketing your photo in one fluid motion. The World picked up one of the broken cameras and threw it out the window while the vampire stood over the Joestar photograph as if nothing happened. Images of you from his memories and your reincarnation occupied his thoughts; your photo burning a hole in his pant pocket. When time resumed, DIO swiped the photo off the table and thrusted the memories of his past to the darkest recesses of his mind.
DIO would leave you be for now if it meant he could take you back by his side in the end.
“Nothing that concerns you, Vanilla Ice. Come in, I have new orders for Enya.”
                                           ════ ⋆★⋆ ════
She’s not you. She will never be you.
But you want her to be, DIO’s traitorous subconscious whispered. This is ridiculous. The man has never even met your reincarnation. He never spent time with you in this life, barely even a ghost of a conversation between you two, yet he longs for your company more than anything. His rational thoughts and sentiments warred against each other, vying for his final decision on what to do with you. The moment DIO saw you, bleeding and bruised on the stairs below, his heart bled and his shoulders nearly hunched from the pain. His rational side of the argument was silenced and shackled by the chains of past memories that bound him to you. He ached to take you into his arms and whisper reassurances in your ears, that he will give you all the comfort and security he could never give you before.
He couldn’t. Not with Polnareff leaning into your touch; his arm slung over your shoulders and head dangerously close to yours. Not with his blood simmering under his skin and his nails piercing through his palm, blood slowly seeping through the fingers of his clenched fist. The fight in your eyes hid the intense worry for your wounded comrade—maybe even lover, DIO bitterly mused—as you pressed your side flush against the silver-haired man’s battered, stumbling body. You looked at DIO as if he was the gum stuck on the sole of your shoe; as if he was the vilest, most putrid thing that ever graced the Earth. The tension and anger twisted your expression into a scowl, brows furrowed and lips dipped into that all-too familiar frown.
DIO had so many questions to ask you; so many memories to share in the vain hope that you would sympathize with him and join him. One look in your eyes, the same indiscernible emotion flickering to life when you tended to his bruises before he was adopted by George Joestar, and DIO knew he would lose this battle with you just like all those years ago. He could feel your fingers wrapped around his arm again; the cold cloth pressed to his bruised cheek; the soft smile he hated and adored at the same time. White hot rage bubbled and coursed through his veins. His jaw clenched and his nails dug deeper into the scarred flesh of his palms, drops of blood dripping towards the floor. His heart pounded against his chest as if desperate to flee into your embrace.
“In your fucking dreams,” you spat, scowl deepening and shifting your hold on Polnareff. “I’d sooner die than join you.”
Phantom daggers planted themselves into DIO’s heart, violently thrashing in its cage, as the image of you in his memories clashed against your battle-worn figure. Remnants of your smile adorned your lips followed by the laughter that echoed in his ears; the teasing lilt reserved solely for Dio. Your eyes glowed with life, brimming with joy and love that he realized too late. Your outstretched hand implored him to take it; to cool the swell of his bruises and wipe the blood off his wounds; to run across the fields once more before he had to return to his studies; to spend another day with you in Victorian London before he found that stone mask. Then there was you of the present, breathing ragged and gaze lit with spite and abhorrence for everything DIO is. You struggled to carry Polnareff’s weight from how much you leaned on him. Blood matted your hair and a long scratch marred your cheek. He noticed your leg wobble, threatening to let you and the other man pathetically fall to the floor. Your hands gripped Polnareff closer to you, whether this was an intended or subconscious action was beyond DIO.
He still yearned for you, despite all of this.
                                           ════ ⋆★⋆ ════
His pained screams disrupted the once peaceful night of Cairo, Egypt.
“What?!” DIO felt the cracks viciously trail from his leg to his head, split in half similar to how Jonathan caught him off-guard on that fateful day. Humiliation, shame, disbelief, and a storm of emotions raged in his heart; eyes wide and lips parted from the turbulence wracking his body. Jotaro watched, heated glare shadowed under the brim of his hat, as DIO’s screams reached the heavens. The stars joined in the spectacle, mockingly bright under the torturous pain and suffering of the once invincible vampire.
“I-Impossible!” DIO warbled, choking and gurgling from the blood pooling in his mouth. “I… am DIO! I… am...”
Something in his gut coiled; whispers of his mind urged him to look in the direction of the harbinger of his demise. His gape drifted from the stars to Jotaro, but his attention was not on the high school delinquent. At least ten feet away from the two, you leaned on the railing of the bridge with trembling legs. One of your hands clutched the wound on your left side; a wound DIO inflicted himself. He clearly remembered the triumph and glee that dulled his senses; the swing of the stop sign that would bring the Joestar bloodline to an end; the surprise shifting into panic when you jumped in front of Jotaro with the intent to protect him. In his haste, DIO flicked his wrist and grazed your side with the edge of the stop sign.
He once thought fate favored him. That the decision to cut off his head and to take Jonathan’s body was fate allowing him to live another century. That your absence was a weakness that fate had nipped in the bud for him; that your reborn soul was another chance fate had given him to atone for his mistakes. So, why? Why would fate pit you against him, to relive that cursed night when Dio had taken your life in front of his very eyes? Were you fated to ally with the Joestars and die for them? Another corpse among the others that followed the wake of the Joestar lineage, all just to defeat him?
DIO couldn’t kill you, as much as he despised the sentiment.
A fool. He is and always will be a fool when it comes to you. Dio will always want you in each lifetime, and it pained DIO to admit it in his final moments. His heart lurched and lodged itself in his throat; the fire in his blood scorching his skin and insides. His hand reached out to you, just like before, but you’re not dying this time. He knew that, if the afterlife actually existed, he will never be able to join you. DIO saw your eyes widen as you took a step back, farther from his grasp. Another bloodcurdling scream rang in the night; dying gurgles heard only by the two people who brought him to his death.
Even in this life, Dio could never have you.

Note
Piper/Kyle, except it's an AU where Kyle's parents were never killed by demons, so he lived a perfectly normal, happy childhood and grew up to follow their footsteps into teaching and Kyle's a normal, maybe even a little boring archaeology professor who secretly dreams of having his very own Indiana Jones moment - up until the day he opens some dusty old chest and unleashes a demon that tries to kill him, and he barely gets away only to run into this petite brunette woman who proceeds to blow the demon the fuck up, and Kyle's never believed in love at first sight before, but he's pretty sure he can make an exception for Piper
wait omg mentally stable kyle au okay wait i gotta wrap my head around this kyle but not absofuckinlutely insane whatta picture omg. okay. i feel like he’s still gotta have this belief in the supernatural i feel like that’s a large part of the charm in literally any kyle dynamic with the sisters is Witch Who Gets It and Man Who’s Only Got Raw Data. there’s an appeal to that. seeing things from different angles all that. so we can say kyle ever good at puzzles has taken his parents notes and everything he knows and various texts and kinda pieced together okay magic does exist. but in this au he’s a professor and not an fbi agent so he can’t just walk around saying Magic Is Real because um he needs this job. also he’s never seen it. but like. the data does not like. like. like it’s real man like are you kidding me. and we’ll say he has one normal friend because he’s normal in this au and he’s like okay here me out tho magic is real and his friend is like ......okay. because like. it could be, i guess? i’m not gonna fight you on this. and kyle also definitely read a lot as a kid he reads a lot now and he’s always kinda like. like you know wondered what it might be like to be a man of action not someone stuck behind a desk all day seeing the world through books. so when he starts to see markers of the gathering storm,,, well. these are the times that make a man. he can either be a pussy about it and keep living his life through paper and ink, or he can follow his intuition. blah blah blah this leads him to get kidnapped by pirates which like. excuse me??? and kyle’s kinda kicking himself because he Wanted to be like a character in an adventure book and well like bada bing bada boom you get what you ask for. which. all due respect on his part. is smart enough to outwit them and escape. he might have dropped his wallet there tho. but when he goes back the same route wandering through the thick fog, all he finds is a solid wall of rock. so i guess he’s fucked in that regard. whoops. but!! magic is real. so that’s a dub. digs a little bit more into the blackjack cutting lore, maybe finds the x marks the spot on where their main hideout was, road trip to. seattle? i guess? port city that isn’t san francisco but is more reasonable to drive to that like. nola or boston. and lo and behold he finds it and find their documentation of the gathering storm accidentally trips a booby trap and jesus fucking christ pirate skeletons with sword which - respectfully - kyle is holding his own for the most part, not getting immediately worried, but there’s no way that would have lasted had the three skeletons not been blown to pieces. and he looks over and sees three brunettes and the one in the center is like who the hell are you? to which kyle really feels like He should be the one asking that question but after stammering out some kind of response about how he’s a professor and he was just looking for some soil samples something generic archaeological because hey. he doesn’t trust these women. he doesn’t know what side they’re on. and he’s not just gonna sacrifice the information he has on the gathering storm. and it’s obvious they don’t believe him, but they don’t kill him either. instead, the one in the center just says be more careful where you leave your stuff and tosses his wallet back to him.
and later at the manor paige is like we just let him go?? and phoebe’s like yeah how to we know he’s not a demon? he wouldn’t be the first to pose as a mortal in the mortal world (because phoebe went to the university to return kyle’s wallet because like it has is ID in it employee id all that under the guise of like. giving a lecture to some of the student’s there as the bay’s leading advice columnist oh hey is there a kyle brody here yeah haha he’s a friend of a friend anyone seen him no he’s on vacation right now? left real abruptly? and then immediately went into his office and touched every surface trying to get a premonition (au in which phoebe didn’t get her powers stripped) and concluded that he’s just Some Guy. like he like has friends and a nine to five and an apartment. so a guy). but piper’s like we don’t know. but we also don’t know what he’s up to or what his connection to the pirates was, which is why i cast a tracking spell on the wallet. and both phoebe and paige approve and in this au again phoebe didn’t get her powers stripped so in styx feet under it’s her and paige on mission and as paige is the one who cast the protection spell and as paige is also very stubborn and also refuses to let innocents die she is the one who gets to become death. she also has a very compelling relationship with death because like. she watched her parents die. and she’s prue’s replacement. the replacement for the dead girl. also fun paige/prue parallel! meanwhile right Should state in any piper/kyle au we just extend pleo’s divorce era by having him remain an elder and keeping that early s6 vibe. so piper’s definitely like a bit more neurotic than normal because you know things haven’t gone great for her and those pirates were warning about the gathering storm and honestly that better not be something that’s gonna hurt her boys because she really could not bear to lose another family member so she’s doing some digging which begins to imply that kyle knows more that he let on so where is he now? the university? great.
and kyle’s you know minding his own business in his office when the same woman practically kicks down his door and is like alright i’m gonna ask again who the hell are you and this time you better answer me honestly. to which: wow. like wow. she’s. she’s a force to be reckoned with and also kinda immediately gains points in kyle’s book for like a) kinda confronting him about knowing more because he’s pretty good at covering his tracks all that so if he’s been Found Out it’s by someone good and b) she also disintegrated evil pirate skeletons so like. 👍. But. he does not trust her for shit. no. absolutely not. he has no reason to. but piper’s not yielding blasts a hole in the wall near his head like quickly now or next time i won’t miss but kyle’s so fuckin stubborn he’s like 🤐 and piper’s. i mean, she can’t kill an innocent. she doesn’t know if that’s who he is, but she can’t run that risk. and kyle’s not saying shit, so she leaves.
then it’s the guardian angel episode where the charmed ones are there on instruction (though they don’t know what they’re looking for. maybe they were just scrying for information) and kyle’s there on a hunch and piper and kyle see each other and it’s um. mac charlie see each other from across the room reaction image. both like. what the fuck are you doing here? and in this one paige is still the one to get her guardian angel stolen and piper’s immediately on high alert because you know big sister/mom mode activated. but they don’t know what they’re looking for and kyle’s like it’s her guardian angel. and piper once again snaps to him firey look in her eyes but kyle’s really just trying to place nice here so he’s like guardian angels. they’ve been going missing being stolen whatever. he’s got the research on it. and piper doesn’t want to trust him but paige is really in grave danger. so, as the sister with the offensive power, she’s going with kyle, and phoebe has to make sure paige doesn’t like. pull a grams. (which for the record i do not accept prewitched as canon but like the elders definitely killed grams <3)
so blah blah blah piper’s now and kyle’s place which is ten times worse than his office because this is where he does his real work and he’s got all the guardian angel shit up and out and is explaining it to piper and it’s making sense but what catches her eye is something on the gathering storm that kyle left out now they’re talking about that they’re starting to realize they’re on the same side. blah blah blah save paige. next episodes what werewolf episode. skip. then!! idk paige still runs magic school right so she’s in the library and she calls piper and she’s like hey remember when you told me to keep an eye out on the gathering storm? and piper’s like yes yeah what is it? and she’s like well we’re inventorying the library and we have books on them and piper’s like that’s good news ! ? and paige is like yeah but we’re missing one. book five. in this something something series. and piper knows Exactly where that book is because she fucking saw it on kyle’s kitchen counter. so now she’s barging into kyle’s place which is getting to be a common occurrence at this point and kyle kinda wants to complain but this is by far the most interesting his life’s been ever and honestly? he’d be kinda bummed if piper stopped kicking down his door. wait actually scratch that you want my book no fuck you changed my mind. to which piper’s like look we’re looking for the same goal here right so give me the book because i have the rest of the series and this could be the missing puzzle piece and kyle’s like okay fine i’ve read the book cover to cover give me the rest of the series and i’ll get you your answers and piper’s like okay let’s get things straight here i’m the witch you’re some two bit archeology professor so when it comes to the handling of sacred magical tomes i’ll be taking the reigns here and kyle’s like fine then you won’t be taking the book. and piper’s like wanna bet and the next think kyle knows he’s hearing the door slam his book’s gone and he’s hearing tires peel out onto the street and he has no idea how she did it.
back at the manor piper’s got her reading glasses on an volume one open and god this fucking sucks. so she makes phoebe take a stab at it and she hates reading it too. paige also starts it and is like respectfully no. piper’s the only one who did the reading in high school. this is her turf. but my god she cannot make it through all eight of these fucking books. So. she calls kyle. he has to come to the manor because there’s no way she’s giving him the books and there’s no way she’s letting him in magic school so. hi. welcome to the house. but!! by a contrived plot device!!!! a gnome has been shot in magic school this book was the only thing at the scene and paige wants to investigate further but she can’t just leave it out there so she brings it back to the manor she’s gonna cast some spell to find out if there are already spells on the book how to reverse it she just needs to find the spell first and like. there’s no way in hell paige ever wears an outfit with big enough pockets to keep the book on her. so she leaves it on the table. to which kyle asks how this is relevant to the collection. to which piper says don’t open that!! whoops. see, this is why i said we don’t let two bit archeology professors near magical books! piper/kyle charmed noir..............

100 CANDLES - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Devilworks
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: 100 CANDLES centers around four friends playing a game, in an old house, that requires them to tell one another horror tales by candlelight and then go off to this room and stand in front of a magical mirror and blow out their candle. Supposedly, one story for every candle. They cannot leave the game until all the candles are out; otherwise they will fall victim to a witch’s curse.
REVIEW: The good news is that there are not 100 stories, as you may have surmised. There are six tales, and the wrap around story. While the six tales each have their own list of credits it is interesting to note that they all feel as if they were produced by the same filmmaking team. They all have a similar level of production design, cinematography, and effects that sets this film at a level of a production that looks like an independent film budget as opposed to a home grown horror film.
I thought the six stories were interesting and well acted. Some had a well developed narrative while a few were just about the “gotcha” moment and the special or visual effects. I thought that “Blight” was the most ambitious of the tales and very well made. It features a solid cast, some impressive visuals. And, as a period piece, nice costumes and location. It was a bit curious that the story “Buried Alive” was in Spanish. All the other tales were in English, and even the storyteller spoke English, and no explanation as to why it was in Spanish. It was well done but didn’t offer anything in the way of surprises. “When Demons Die” was interesting in that it really isn’t a genre tale. It was a good story with nice production values and a good cast, but would have been more effective if the director could have told the story more from the child’s point of view.
The “100 Candles Game” is the weakest link. Because the characters have to go into another room, alone, where the mirror is after telling their story you expect something “scary” will transpire there. Also the mannequins covered with sheets does nothing to offer any suspense, surprise, or a red-herring in terms of what is going on. The acting is good, the production values above average, but simply serves as an excuse to unite these six other short films.
100 CANDLES is an interesting anthology film whose six tales are worth your consideration. The warp around story can simply be discarded by fast-forwarding if you choose to view on demand or DVD, which I would recommend watching that way as opposed to in a theater. The six short films are well worth the watch, and might look good on a big screen, but taken as a whole I don’t think it has the gravitas to warrant a theatrical viewing.

Books I Read Throughout 2020-Part One
For many of us this year has been incredibly stressful and difficult. There were times throughout this year that my mental health had suffered, but there were also times where I couldn't have been happier. If I were to make any comparison to what the year was like, I would say that it was like the scariest and exciting roller coaster that anyone has ever been on. During the year, while the world seemed to burn around us and everything terrible happened, I managed to surpass my reading goal for the year. Something I did not expect to do, especially since I had months where it seemed that I couldn't finish anything. In times like this, I think it's important to take a step back and look to the positive things, even if they are small.
Here I am going to give a brief description of the first 10 books that I read, with a small snippet of what I thought of the books at the time.
Book One - The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Finished Reading on January 4, 2020
"It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still.
By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.
But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.
In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time."
For years I have heard good things about this book and for many, this is an all time favorite. I was excited to pick this one up, especially since I had read
I am the messenger
by this author and loved it.  While I do not view this book as an all time favorite for myself, I do think it was beautifully written. I just personally wished that it was a bit shorter at times as it seemed to drag on. Despite feeling that it was a little long, my favorite part of this book was the role in which Death plays. I won't mention anything more in case some of you are still contemplating picking this one up.

Book Two - All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) By Martha Wells
Finished Reading on January 5, 2020
"In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.
But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern.
On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot." Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.
But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth."
This was a novella that I greatly enjoyed, but unfortunately I have not kept up with the series. I believe my library did not have the rest of the books and at the time I didn't want to purchase them. As my library continues to get the rest of the series, I will gladly continue to read them. I thought the story was unique, and at times funny. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who wants a science fiction book that is quick and easy read.

Book Three - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them By Newt Scamander
Finished listening to anAudiobook on January 7,2020
"An approved textbook at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since publication, Newt Scamander's masterpiece has entertained wizarding families through the generations. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an indispensable introduction to the magical beasts of the Wizarding World. Scamander's years of travel and research have created a tome of unparalleled importance. Some of the beasts will be familiar to readers of the Harry Potter books - the Hippogriff, the Basilisk, the Hungarian Horntail ... Others will surprise even the most ardent amateur Magizoologist. This is an essential companion to the Harry Potter stories, and includes a new foreword from J.K. Rowling (writing as Newt Scamander) and six new beasts!"
I am not one who will usually listen to audio books. I have an incredibly difficult time listening to anything that is over 3 hours because it's hard for me to really concentrate on the storyline. On occasion, though I will listen to them, depending on the length of the title and if the general consensus is that the audiobook is better. Fantastic Beast was a great audio book to listen to when I took my daily walks. I was able to delve a bit deeper into the wizarding world and learn more about the creatures briefly mentioned in Harry Potter.
Now, I do want to briefly bring into attention that I will no longer purchase anything written by JK Rowling. I have always distanced myself from creators as I use books and music to escape, but it has come to my attention that JK Rowling has repeatedly done harm to the trans community. That's not something I agree with or can support in any way shape or form. For those who do continue to purchase and read JK Rowlings work, that is your choice and I will not say anything about it (unless it is actively causing harm here). This is my own personal choice and opinions on JK Rowling.

Book Four - The Near Witch
Finished Reading on January 9, 2020f
"The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children. If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company. And there are no strangers in the town of Near. These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.
But when an actual stranger-a boy who seems to fade like smoke-appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.
The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.
As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi's need to know-about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.
Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab's debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won't soon forget."
I am going to be perfectly honest. I will pick up everything that V.E Schwab writes eventually. Including this book, I have read 10 of her books and I have enjoyed every single one of them. The Near Witch is one of V.E Schwab's earlier works that had previously gone out print. Recently, the book has gone back into print and received a cover change. The story takes you to another world with superstitions, magic, and adventures. While it is apparent that this is an early work of V.E Schwab that does not mean that it's not a great book to pick up. This book brought me back to the type of books that I read when I was younger and it was an overall great experience.

Book Five - How's Moving Castle By Diana Wynne Jones
Finished Reading on January 12, 2020
"Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle.
To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye."
Howl's Moving Castle is probably one of my favorite stories of all time. I first watched the animated film by Studio Ghibli. In all honesty, I have a hard time determining which version is my favorite. The movie and novel do have some differences, but I think both can be enjoyed. Howl's Moving Castle shows how the pressures placed upon us and how we view ourselves can have a negative impact on ourselves, but only if we let it. Sophie struggles with being eldest daughter, and struggles with seeing her worth, but as the story progresses, we see how resilient and strong she is.

Book Six - Bird Box By Josh Malerman
Finished Reading on January 21, 2020
"Something is out there, something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.
Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remains, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now that the boy and girl are four, it's time to go, but the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. Something is following them all the while, but is it man, animal, or monster?"
I had originally watched the Netflix movie before listening to the audio book. I was curious about the book as I noticed a lot of people was divided on whether or not the movie was better than the book. Although I thought the audio book was great, I definitely enjoyed the movie more. Normally this is never the case, but I thought the book was adapted well onto the screen. What are your thoughts on it? Was the movie better than the book?

Book Seven - Skyward By Brandon Sanderson
Finished Reading on January 25, 2020
"Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul."
Skyward was the first Bandon Sanderson book that I've ever picked up, shocking I know. I was not disappointed at all. Skyward brought me out this world and I found myself rooting for the girl who fought for everything that she's ever had. If you haven't picked this ne up yet, what are you waiting for?

Book Eight - The Name of the Wind By Patrick Rothfuss
Finished Reading on January 30, 2020
"My name is Kvothe.I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.
So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature--the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend."
I first read this book in 2015 and picked it up again earlier in the year. I personally feel like I enjoyed the book more the second time around. It's a lengthy and often slow story of a man telling the story of his life. I have often described this book as having a similar ambiance to The Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter. Don't get me wrong though, this is a completely different story of those two series, but I couldn't help but draw a comparison.

Book Nine - Red, White, and Blue By Casey McQuiston
Finished Reading on February 15, 2020
"First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.
The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.
As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?"
I needed something lighter and easy to read after The Name of the Wind. Red, White, and  Blue did not disappoint, and I was whisked into the life of Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry. This LGBTQ+ book is full of entertainment, self-discovery, drama, and love.

Book Ten - Cress (The Lunar Chronicles, #3)
Finished Reading on February 17, 2020
"In this third book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they're plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.
Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl imprisoned on a satellite since childhood who's only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she's just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.
When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a higher price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has."
The Lunar Chronicals is a guilty pleasure of mine. Each book in the series is a re-telling of famous fairy tales. Cress, the third book of the Lunar Chronicals, is a sci-fi/ fantasy re-telling of Rapunzel. While each book follows a different fairy tale, the whole series comes together and forms an epic story. As we follow a shy young girl, who spent her life locked away from everyone suddenly get swept into the resistance, we learn that hope is always possible even in hopeless situations.

His Own Most Fantastic Creation: Stories about H. P. Lovecraft, edited by S.T. Joshi, PS Publishing, 2020. Cover art by John Coulthart, info: pspublishing.co.uk.
H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937), the pioneering writer of weird fiction, has himself become an icon in popular culture. Stories, novels, and other works featuring the gaunt, lantern-jawed gentleman from Providence, Rhode Island, have proliferated. These works have been triggered by the incredible amount of knowledge we have on the writer—his family, his friends, his idiosyncrasies and eccentricities—as found in his thousands of surviving letters. This anthology takes the figure of Lovecraft and enmeshes him in a series of bizarre and supernatural adventures. Darrell Schweitzer focuses on Lovecraft’s childhood, when he was plagued with dreams of “night-gaunts” and was left bereft by the early death of his father. John Shirley depicts Lovecraft as a gawky teenager evolving his notions of “cosmicism,” while Scott Wiley emphasises Lovecraft’s devotion to cats. Stephen Woodworth and Donald R. Burleson ring changes on the Lovecraftian theme of personality exchange. Lovecraft famously collaborated with Harry Houdini on a story. Donald Tyson and Jonathan Thomas write very different stories on the association of these two figures. Mark Samuels focuses on Lovecraft’s creation of imaginary tomes of forbidden lore, while the stories by Richard Gavin, David Hambling, Jason V Brock, and S.T. Joshi supply broader ruminations on the origins of Lovecraft’s revolutionary motifs. While eschewing Lovecraft himself as a character, the tales by W.H. Pugmire and Simon Strantzas exhibit figures who reveal strikingly Lovecraftian elements while probing the psyche of the man from Providence. H.P. Lovecraft’s work has captured the imaginations of millions—and now he himself has become no less fascinating. In every sense of the word he was, as Vincent Starrett said of him, “his own most fantastic creation.”

Alpha Centurion War: The Battle of the Andromeda Galaxy and the Battle of the Milky Way Galaxy
Laurissa Owen Maximilian Jones as a S rank magic user who is a trained arch mage, alchemist, magician, necromancer, sorceress, warlock, witch, & wizard. She is a S rank guild member who is a sorceress, warlock, & wizard multiclass. She is the daughter of a female homo magi of European myth known as Lady Meinn and a Greco Roman goddess Athena concieved through magic. She was born as a demigod born in the ancient past who later became a new god born in the modern times of the 22nd century. She was kryptonianized in a super soldier experiment in the near future giving her alien powers of optic blasts, energy blasts, & energy breaths when exposed to red, blue, white, & white solar radiation. This is why during the Alpha Centurion War she is called the Goddess of War as the second in command of Alexander Mack Smith/Alexandria Macy Smith the one known as the Titan of War. She as the niece of Ares and Aphrodite, the goddaughter of Mars and Ballona, & the daughter of Athens has ruled Ancient Sparta as its Queen, Ancient Athens as its Senate, & the Ancient Roman Empire as its Empress in the ancient past after the truth of her divine and arcane birth was discovered by a seer and oracle. She was chosen as the princess of the Amazonians of the Greek and Roman Mount Olympus. Laurissa is skilled in abjuration, alchemy, animancy, animation, arithmancy, aether magic, banishment, battle magic, blood magic, conjuration, creation, curses, dark magic, death magic, defensive magic (such as force field generation, magical energy absorption, & magical regeneration), druid magic, eldritch magic, elemental magic, enchantment, healing, hexes, hypnosis, illusions, immortality, incantations, inscriptions, invocations, life magic, light magic, magic aura, magic detection, magic generation, magic invisibility, magic portal creation, magic replication, magical communication, magical constructs, magical energy manipulation, magically enhanced physiology, magical object manipulation, magical flight, mysticism, nature magic (such as animal manipulation, elemental manipulation, plant manipulation, & weather manipulation), nether magic, necromancy, offensive magic (such as energy circle combat, magic attacks, & magic combat), personal domain, potion creation, purification, reality warping, replication, reanimation, restoration, rituals, sacrificial magic, sealing, sorcery, spell casting, summoning, telekinesis, telepathy, teleportation, transfiguration, transmutation, & witchcraft. They are poor at clairvoyance, divination, & precognition as  she is not a seer or oracle. She as a magician is an expert in the application of magic because she has magical aptitude and esoteric skill of her own. These intelligent fighters are professionals in influencing and misleading their adversaries. They regularly vanish from view in a gust of smoke only to rematerialize again with a knife or dagger at their opponents’ throats. Magicians have the power of esoteric magic and they have a few good tricks up their sleeves. The classic foil to the witch the magician applies smith craft rather than witchcraft and investigates esoteric knowledge rather than celestial teachings. While the witch collects an ample range of wisdom in the course of their vocation a magician will study a much more focused field but in far greater detail. The Mage is the living personification of mysticism in human form. Often alluring, clever, and shrewd the mage’s connection with magic is exceptionally commanding. She as a magic user craves the esoteric and mysterious information that is ancient and the means to reach the heights of incalculable fame that she has always dreamed of. Adventure is the surest if cruelest way of refining her mysterious skills as danger traditionally allows one to reap the greatest benefits. She says, “Let those who have limited scope spend their time poring over worn tomes and scrolls from the safety of a library.”She first got her magic when she was born but it revealed itself when she was a kid in an event of unstable explosive accidental magic. Her potent and powerful magic has an influence on the world around her. It has an effect on the people around her as she figures how to harness, control, & use her magical power correctly. She is currently struggling to understand this power. She as a homo magi and demigoddess wants to know why she abruptly sets things on fire, suddenly freezes things in ice and frost, or electrocuting things with lightning or thunder without meaning to when she gets sad or angry. She is forced into these astonishing and bizarre situations with her remarkable magical powers. Because she doesn’t understand what is happening with her magic she wants to discover and comprehend this power that she has. She learns to comprehend her power and learn how to control her power as she wants to learn how to wield it. She wants to find out her history and the mystery of her birth. She wants to learn the origin of her esoteric and arcane magic and the origin of her divine magic as someone who was given up by her divine mother and magic parent and adopted by a non magical mortal couple. She wants to use this power to transform the planet around her for the better as a whole using this power. She as a magic user is the best magic user defined and unified by the spells she casts. Magic is her blood and she is an unfathomable esoteric and mysterious power. As a magic user who is heir and scion of naturally magical lineages and ancestry who are the selected of divinity and pawns of destiny and fate she as a magic user looks inside herself for esoteric and mysterious skill and draw forth the power and force that few mortals can ever visualize. Vitalized by lives ever threatening to be devoured by her natural powers this magic touched soul continuously indulges in, purifies, & improves her baffling skills and talents. She slowly learns how to control and exploit her inheritance and coaxes forth ever superior esoteric achievements and exploits. Just as diverse as these inherently commanding and potent spell casters’ capabilities and motivations are the ways in which she prefers to employ her gifts. She as a magic user seeks to control her skills through contemplation and restraint becoming masters of their incredible heritage. Other times she gives in to her magic letting it rule her life with frequently volatile and fiery results. She as a magic user live and breathe that which other spell caster allocate their lives to mastering. For her magic is more than an advantage or a subject of study because for her magic is life itself. Her lineage of being the heir of the some of the twenty most noble and powerful houses of Celtic myth affects her magic. Her magic come from a proud heritage and comes from a proud noble and ancient house where that sorcerer’s lineage is always coming up in the firstborn child. She has a great legacy behind her where her ancestors were great magic users that they have to live up to it. Her ancestors were also mages, sorcerers, wizards, witches, & warlocks so she has inherent memory and when she casts spells she gets flashes of her past ancestors and future descendants casting that spell. Her spells are related with her emotions or memories. So when she conjures spells she thinks of a feeling or memories connected to that spell and use that to harness, channel, & use the magic inside her. She sometimes tries to use her magic responsibly but other times she just wants to let loose. As a magic user she is a force of nature. As a sorcerer her magic comes from inside her body. As a sorceress she has a physical, emotional, & spiritual exertion connected to their thoughts, emotions, & soul every time she uses her magic. When she uses magic she exerts herself because the magic is coming out of her. So it is a manifestation of what is happening inside her physically, emotionally, mentally, & spiritually. So when she uses her power her eyes, skin, veins, mouth, palms of her hands, & hair all blaze and burn a certain color. She smolders cobalt when using snow, water, ice, & frost magic and she radiates scarlet when using fire, magma, & lava magic. When she uses her magic her voice changes and it sounds like two people are speaking at once. This is because when she calls upon her magic a connection is formed between her and her mother Lady Meinn. The same Lady Meinn who once defeated King Arthur Pendragon, Merlin, Morgan Le Fay, Nicholas Flamel, & Perenelle Flamel in a duel of magic and swordsmanship. When she uses her magic she floats off the ground. When she uses her magic the environment reacts as rocks, trees, sand, & stones orbit around her. Just like planets do around a star or moons do around a planet. Past the shroud of the ordinary conceal the secrets of supreme influence, power, control, & supremacy. This is where life forms beyond the myths of mortals where angels, demons, fallen angels, gods, devils, fallen gods, titans, dragon gods, & great old gods tread. It is the home of the teachings and knowledge of concepts both astonishing and appalling. Such mysteries call to those with the objective and desire and the intellect to rise above the common folk to seize true power and control. Such is the path of the magic user. She as an astute magic user searches for, accumulates, & desires esoteric and mysterious knowledge. She draws on arcane arts to work marvels and miracles past the abilities of simple mortals. She as a magic user selected an exact subject of magical study and became a mistress of such powers but she also welcomed flexibility reveling in the limitless and absolute phenomenon of all magic. She as a magic user proved to be sly and potent talented at smiting her opponents and empowering her allies, With magic at her side she is unstoppable at shaping the world to her every wish. Her focus on the study on magic creates commanding and potent elemental effects. She as a magic user who was an officer in the Amazonian military found service in military forces serving as artillery to blast rival armies in the distance. She then used her fantastic power to defend the weak. She then went to seek their own reward as adventurers working for countless guilds. Pulling on the delicate weave of magic that saturates the universe they cast many spells. They can cast spells of volatile fire, magma, or lava. They can cast spells of curving thunder and lightning. They can cast faint deception. They can cast brute force mind control. Their magic summons monsters, angels, devils, or gods from other planes of reality. They wanted to unlock the deepest secrets of esoteric magic. They wanted to level entire armies to dust and ashes with the waves of their hands. They wanted to control, harness, & wield magic that would let them control time, space, & the universe at will. As wizards they were committed prodigy academics.  To them knowledge is power. Their most powerful spells modify one substance into another in transmutation and alchemy. Their most powerful spells can call the power of the stars and bring down a meteor from space. Their most powerful of spells can open gateways to other planets and dimensions.  Their bodies are the instrument and medium for the primordial energies that permeate the land, the sky, the sea, the heavens, the planets, the moons, & the stars of the universe. The fabric of the very universe, multiverse, & omniverse is theirs to control feral and mysterious diverse in appearance and purpose. That is what she wanted to obtain as a wizard. The power of magic drew her as a student to master its secrets. She desired to become like the gods shaping reality itself as a godling and demigod. She as a sorcerer inherited her powerful magic at birth as true geniuses of spell casting. She as a sorceress has raw and primal magic in her blood and get to wield the most impressive and vicious magic. Though the casting of an average spell needs simply the utterance of a few eccentric words, passing gestures, and sometimes a touch or mass of alien resources. These shallow components scarcely suggest at the proficiency attained after years of apprenticeship and numerous hours of study. She as a magic user live and die by her spells and everything else is less important. They learn new spells as she researches and mature in skill. She has also learned them from other magic users such as alchemists, hoodoo priests and priestess, magicians, necromancers, sorcerers or sorceress, shamans, voodoo priest and priestess, warlocks, witches, & wizards. She has learned them from ancient: tomes, scrolls, & books. She has learned it from cryptic writing. She has learned from magical creatures such as phoenixes and dragons and ancient beings such as the light and dark fae that are permeated in magic. Her life as a magic user is hardly ever boring. She has worked as a magical philosopher and an esoteric lecturer. Lori Jones has worked as a magical philosopher as a professor in a magical Ivy League university in the Elven Empire. Lori Jones has worked as an esoteric lecturer as a professor in a magical military academy in the Homo Magi Federation. She has spent time coaching others the mysteries of the universe, multiverse, & omniverse when she wanted an average life taking a break from being an adventurer. She took in pupils to teach her knowledge at a four year university in the Homo magi Federation. Wandering around the magical realms as a nomad wanderer and adventurer she taught apprentices to pass on her legacy.
She has also sold her services by serving in the armed forces of the magical human federation as a battle mage using a rapier or cutlass in one hand and a wand in the other on the battlefield. Generally when people think of the term wizard they think of someone who is not physically powerful but relies on magic to make up for that liability. Typically when people think of a warrior they think of a brawny person low on brains who smashes everything that gets in the way. A battle wizard welcomes both of these features using them as the circumstances need. These battle wizards are skilled in combat while they use powerful magic as well. She is also a war mage. A war mage is a unique class of spell caster. They are one who has discovered powerful magical secrets and trained enthusiastically. In combat the real supremacy of the war mage emerges. For them who have mastered the art of joining power and magic into one lethal ability one that allows them to match or even defeat both fighters and spell casters or people who are both like the paladin in single combat. Since the dawn of humanity when our ancestors first revealed the killing power of rock and bone. Blood has been spilled in the name of everything from gods, to achieve power and authority, to get vengeance and retribution, to justice to simple psychotic fury and wrath. It was only a matter of time before magic was first useful to the battlefield. The first war mages were little more than experts in conjuring, transfiguration, transmutation, & evocation. The second generation of war mages found that a firmly focused method to magical conflict produced better results and it was from their labors that the contemporary war mage exists. Battle magic is about pushing magic to its fundamental and supreme devastating confines turning each esoteric expression into a death sentence and every open palm motion into a fatal magical attack. This application allows war mages to produce spells in styles others can only stare at in skepticism. From helixes of strength that leave distorted flesh in their wake. To thrashing arcs that shatter bone and armor like fragile dirt. To the unrestrained devastation of overwhelming calamity battle magic is all about being triumphant at war.  There are those who seek to master the skill of magic and there are those who seek to master the art of warfare and the war mage seeks to master both with breathtaking results. With weapon in hand and esoteric magic at their sway opponents tremble and flee from these battle mages. These battle mages are arcane spell casters who live for the commotion of fighting and scream of agony and particularly the epic obliteration created by war. The more functional spells of wizards, sorcerers, warlocks, & witches have little significance to war mages for war mages favor utility over form and are disciplined only in spells most practical for smiting enemies, spreading disorder, and screening allies. A war mage cares only for triumph in combat frequently as part of an army or in the smaller series of operations favored by adventuring parties.  The huge bulk of war mages are alumnae of exceptional esoteric and arcane military academies. These academies are not for the faint of heart for they follow a demanding course of study more akin to boot camp than a wizardly apprenticeship. Throughout the training they are taught to wear magical combat armor and magical power armor while casting spells that are frequently of a far advanced level than the battle mage can really cast. The training drills the spells of war into their memory thus allowing them to prepare and cast spells of combat without needing a spell book or other equipment. For adventuring parties a war mage provides one thing and that is brute firepower. Not just any firepower. We are talking about military grade firepower in a person. Battle mages sharpen their ability and talents through feats not study so devoid of extended use of their powers they cannot become truly lethal.
