hand over jig's backstory nOW
Oh HO! I knew you’d be sending this ask XD I’m ready for ya!
So, Jigen’s living in New York with his family as a kid. Mom’s immigrated from Japan and married his dad (Italian American because Jigen just gives Italian vibes, let’s he so fair).
His dads an alcoholic with mob ties, does shady work that nobody really knows what it is, but when anyone asks they say he’s a mover for businesses in the area when it comes to distributing goods like food or hardware. Despite the mob ties, they’re pretty poor.
Jigen’s mom raises him and his little sister and younger brother in a cramped, shitty apparently in the Bronx. It’s loud and chaotic and Jigen’s the oldest of three, he’s trying to be in charge like his mother, who raises him just like a little mother (gotta remember that Jigen is trans in this AU so, obviously, there’s a LOT to process with moving away from being so close with his mom in regards to being his moms “little doll” or whatever).
Despite her husbands rough demeanor, Jigen’s mom is the sweetest woman? She’s cooking and cleaning and childrearing and trying to hold this crumbling apartment together on her own because her husband drinks their money away and is out doing suspicious shit day after day, but she’s holding it down and we love her for that. She spends time with her kids, reads them books, teaches them life skills and her language and generally is a good mother for the time.
Jigen tries his best to help her out. He’s cleaning the house a lot and trying to keep his siblings out of the way. He has a hard time relating to them. He’s supposed to relate to his sister right? He can’t quite relate all the way. He likes the dolls, but pink? Nah. Blue is his favorite color and the dolls all wear pink or red or white and it drives him NUTS! His sister doesn’t like to shoot bottles with slingshots off the fence in the alley. He doesn’t like the pink nail polish or the frilly dresses or not climbing or having to be cute and clean and quiet. He’s loud! He’s dirty and his knees are always scraped up! He’s chipped his front tooth falling out of a tree, he isn’t anywhere near the traditional definition of feminine that his sister has been raised to be. She fits the mold well (despite growing out of it as she grows), and Jigen never can. His brother, despite being so little, adores him but they can’t fully relate to each other either. His dad enforces strict gender rolls in the house. If he knew Jigen had a slingshot he would be livid. He’s not home enough to know but he’s pissed enough about the ripped skirts and messy hair. His brother can’t relate fully to “sissy girls”.
Jigen realizes in middle school that he HATES how his body is changing. He can’t wrestle anymore with boys in his class. They call him weird, try to flirt with him. The flirting was nice to an extent, some of them were fun guys, but he didn’t like them flirting with a version of himself he couldn’t understand. It was superficial. They were SUPPOSED TO. It changed the dynamic. He doesn’t fit in with the girls or the boys. He turns into a loner. His grades drop. He starts stealing. When he leaves the house he changes into pants and jackets, wrapping bandages around sports bras to hide his chest and hats pulled low to hide any feminine features. What started as a way to cope turns into a signature look. People don’t recognize him. He starts going by his last name and kids at school are surprised when he speaks and they can tell he isn’t male. He steals his dads cigarettes and beer, why doesn’t he feel right? He isn’t a girl but he isn’t a boy? He could be a boy. No. No, he couldn’t. Dad would kill him.
His mother knows he’s pulling away. She’s trying to figure out what’s wrong. Puberty? Well, puberty is hard. She notices Jigen has no friends, she’s worried about him. She doesn’t know how to handle it, Jigen has walked himself off. His sister doesn’t understand. She knows hes smoking and changing clothes and hiding things but doesn’t understand why. She won’t rat him out. She knows the punishments from their father are too harsh. His brother doesn’t even notice, why would he? They aren’t close anymore.
Jigen skips out on high school. He got caught kissing girls behind the school and left before rumors would ruin him or make it home. Was he a lesbian? He couldn’t tell at this point. He tried his best to be a boy but probably had to settle for being a lesbian. Girls were nice enough but..just didn’t feel right. It didn’t matter much though, nobody knew him enough to identify him unless he stuck around anyway. Leaving saved him a lot of grief from peers. His mom catches him smoking that night, they fight. Jigen’s father comes in at the most inopportune moment. They fight. It gets heated, blows are exchanged. How dare he steal cigarettes? How dare he drop out of school? Had they wasted everything on a screwup? Jigen packs a bag and leaves. His mother is crying in the doorway. He wishes he could explain without her hating him.
Weeks on the street end in him salvaging what he could of belongings that were mugged off of him and joining the military. He manages to bribe his way in. Nobody needs to know about his chest or anything else for that matter. Vocal training, cigarettes, and his normal methods of hiding his features and being quietly intimidating keep everyone off his back. Fighting and training are easy. It’s like how he used to play, except his mom doesn’t bandages his knees when he falls anymore. He has to pick himself up and keep going. Slingshot is exchanged for a rifle. It’s clumsy in his hands but soon becomes a perfect fit. He’s the fastest draw on his team. Everyone is impressed. He begins a relationship with a man on his crew. He doesn’t mind that Jigen has secrets. Maybe that’s part of the problem. Jigen goes AWOL after rumors begin to circulate and he almost gets assaulted in the locker room.
Jigen goes back to New York. Stints in the mafia gain him a high ranking. He knows his away around a gun and he’s more careful. He won’t let them get close enough to hurt him like everyone else. Daisuke Jigen, that’s his name now. A sharpshooter that gets his job done and gets his cash fast. He’s a favorite among bosses world wide. He sets prices and can make decent money. He can even afford to pay off certain men to keep his secrets in exchange for affairs that fall out in ways that leave him drinking himself stupid, which is stupid when you’re a world class assassin and everyone wants you dead these days. He gets reckless, crosses a boss wrong. Suddenly, everyone’s against him again. Good things don’t last for him, never will. He’s beaten and shot and barely manages to get out, he’s a sharpshooter after all. He always hits his target. He’s out of the mafia. He should’ve never joined in the first place.
Years down the line he’s doing odd jobs like his dad. The old man’s been dead for years, he’s kept tabs on them after all. He’s tried to call his mom but hung up when she answered more times than he can count. She probably thought he was a prank caller. He’s got shitty boyfriends that keep trying to kill him, women that double cross him, and he’s turning into his father with how much alcohol he consumes. He’s ready for the repetitive cycle of depressed day drinking and chain smoking to end. A funny looking monkey man dances into his life. Suddenly, he’s not so depressed.
He’s got a new family. Lupin was the first person he could really relate to. He wouldn’t let himself entertain the trauma of another fucked up relationship that would end with him or the thief dead, but they did get their tits chopped off by a samurai who was facing the same issues. Fujiko even understood him. He had a significantly safer job robbing big banks and stealing treasure and fucking up actual monsters and having fun doing it! He was finally Daisuke Jigen. He was finally living.
A stint in New York takes them to the Bronx. Jigen works up the courage to explain his past to Lupin while Fujiko has Goemon escort her off shopping in skyscraper malls. The thief is supportive. Tells the man he should face his past before it consumes him. So, they make a trip down to the old neighborhood, and stand outside the door to the crappy apartment. It’s quieter now, no kids invading the halls like there used to be. And Jigen can’t bring himself to knock so Lupin finally does for him. And before Jigen can kick him down the stairs the door is opening and his mother is there. She’s she’s more worn down than she was when he left but she’s just as warm and inviting as she was before. And he’s scared. Will she recognize him? Was this a mistake? But she smiles. She knows his face so well. And it takes some explaining but she understands her boy. She tried to keep tabs on him as best she could while he was away, and while she did lose him, she heard stories about a marksman with a familiar surname circulating in conversations in the Italian neighborhoods. Jigen all but cries, all the grief he’s gone through just to get to this moment. He had worried she would’ve just slammed the door in his face. They get to catch up and, while they don’t tell her about his current occupation, he assures her he has a great job and good friends and that makes her happy.
Eventually they move on, but Jigen exchanged letters with his mother and sends her money often. He feels he owes her for raising such a difficult kid but also he just loves her so much and wants her to finally have a life full of finer things. He catches up with his sister. She’s got kids now. She’s married to a nice man and they live in a house outside of town that’s almost like a farm if you squint. His brother moved to California and helps make movies. He sends a LOT of pictures from work and Jigen actually inspires a character in a western his brother helps produce. Jigen nearly cried when he saw the movie. It was a low-key gay western, Jigen enjoyed it a lot. He finally puts a good portion of his trauma behind him, when he’s able, because he’s mending the bridges that were broken so long ago and finding ways to keep his life exciting. He’s happy.

Update: I'm writing Hanafuda again!!! :D
I'm doing research on travelers accommodation in Buddhist temples for a heist scene, and now I want to go back to Japan so baaaaad... 😭 Also those places usually include shared hot baths and super pretty zen gardens and an awesome traditional vegetarian meal and participating in morning prayers and meditation, and I'm gonna have to concentrate on the heist itself instead of going off on a tangent describing life at the temple. I'm not sure I can add an onsen scene but I really really want to...

Coming out of retirement with another Lupin III fanfic because ok yes I am susceptible to the global imperative to share my own young Lupin and Lupin III family thoughts
This is a fic about Lupin and his grandfather...no, not that grandfather, the other guy, who lives in Hokkaido. It’s also a fic about Lupin’s nogoodnik dad, and also about Lupin’s mother and what kind of person she’d have to be to marry a guy like that. It’s a fic about being trans and taking your trans polycule home to meet the parents. It’s like the Fuma Conspiracy, if instead they went home to visit Lupin’s mundane family and dragged them into a whole lot of trouble. It’s my magnum opus and someone should hire me to make this OVA

iruma kun hcs because im bored
ok so lets get one thing out of the way: sabnock and balam are autistic. there is no going around that.
clara is aroace bc i said so, she also has ADHD and dyslexia, everything is the same for iruma
shax lied, elizabeta, purson, krocell (is that how you spell her name ??? ) and gaap are trans
asmodeous? def has some sort of daddy issues, i dont make the rules, well actually i do, and as rule maker i say that he most def has daddy issues
and lets get the canon out of the way: opera is confirmed to be gender queer as in this pannel shows
Tumblr media
now lets get onto scenario headcanons:
asmodeous often re-writes things such as books, online articles, and sometimes school documents that are too hard for iruma and/or clara to read, balam sensei does the same (not just for iruma and clara, but any student who needs so) balam also sometimes asks asmodeous to help him with rewrites, its a very wholesome student-teacher bonding time for the 2
shax loves vocaloids (his favs are len, rin, and meiko) and because of this andro has jokingly bought shax a miku binder, and it has unironicly became his fav binder
balams office is a safe space for the misfits class, whether it be to calm down from a meltdown, to just talk (balam is a very good listener), or to study for a test.
kalego has neurodivergent friendly copies for his class, written/edited by balam himself (why do i hc that these characters need seperate copies from the rest of the school? bc i have autism and dyslexia and i really wish there were seperate copies so i could understand the material better T-T)
anyways thats all i got atm, but enjoy :D

Backstory for Fujiko perhaps? ^u^
Unsurprisingly, she’s one of the harder ones for me to write, but I’m giving it my all!
She’s born in Japan to a single mother. They live in a tiny apartment and, while her mother is young, she tries her best to do what she can for her. She’s made mistakes but she’s trying her best for her child. However, the stress gets to her. Her family has shunned her for having a child out of wedlock and for being so young. She leaves her child alone in a park one day. Fujiko is wailing after hours of loneliness and is finally picked up by police after a concerned couple realized the abandonment. Despite her age, the memory is something she recalls often and is where her first distrust of the police comes in. She felt they took her from her mother. She was coming back for her, she had to be.
Group homes were a change for Fujiko. She wanted her mom, but the kids are nice. The girls in the homes get in trouble for painting her nails. Why paint his nails?! He’s a boy! Fujiko was as pissed as a 4 year old could be at that point. She looked great in red nail polish! How dare they? However, this is where she learned that turning on the charm got her what she wanted. She was a cute kid and grew into a beautiful adult. She knew how to work the system before she was 7. Even if it was just for cookies or an extended bedtime, it worked. If that didn’t, she was good at tantrums too. She was an angry kid.
She ends up more rebellious in middle school. Group homes aren’t as nice when they realize how much you act out. She’s angry. She’s realized her mother abandoned her. Nobody concretely adopts her and it pisses her off. She’s shunted from home to home as she begins to steal jewelry and expensive things from foster parents. Sometimes they find everything, sometimes they don’t. She’s caught stealing her files trying to find her mother, which ears her a beating with a ruler for snooping in important files. It intensifies her rage against systems like this. There’s no information on her past except her permanent records of all of her misbehaving. Stealing, fighting, tantrums, she’s done it all.
Puberty doesn’t help. Hair in weird places makes her feel like she’s losing her good looks. She can’t get what she wants by just asking or trying her best. She’s learned this early on. Looks are what gets her what she needs. She’s alone and only has herself. She will kick someone’s ass, but that’s a last resort. She steals razors from the girls sanitary products room and teaches herself to shave. She steals makeup and perfume from stores and grows her hair long. Fuck societal norms at this point, she was whoever she wanted to be, damnit! She ends up getting arrested at 15 for stealing makeup. The group home cuts her hair as punishment. She gets more enraged against these systems. The group homes punish her for self expression. The police made fun of her hair and makeup. She pierces her own ears and fixes her hair to her best ability and runs away.
She adopts a new name. She’s Fujiko Mine now. Her hair grows back beautifully and she manages to learn to hide any masculine features well. Watching enough people teaches her how to raise her voice and she puts on an act to get money from rich suckers who treat anyone below them like garbage anyways. She ages into a woman on the streets, sleeping in fancy condos when she’s doing well and living with filthy men she tricks into letting her stay. She always leaves before they find her out, stealing their wallets and milking their bank accounts dry.
She’s in her 20s when she gets a high mark, gets herself a good amount of money but ends up losing it before she can do much. Down on her luck, a love struck Frenchman sweeps her off her feet and she makes him a mark.
It doesn’t work out like she expected.
He doesn’t leave. He found her out immediately. The stealing, her secrets, everything. He doesn’t care, despite the fact she holds a knife to his throat. He’s Lupin III and he’s… got really great boobs- oh. So that’s how he knew.
Lupin helps her pay her top and bottom surgery and handles all the recovery. He was really sweet for it. They form a bond pretty quickly. She heals and steals his wallet. He kept Monopoly money in it, the little creep. And a phone number. He invites her on heists, presents her with diamonds and dresses and designer bags. It’s what she always wanted. And while Lupin does want things in return, namely sex, he’s not greedy about it like the other men were. He isn’t forceful. If she says no he accepts just cuddling or even sharing a coffee and a chat.
Eventually they end up with a samurai and a gunman in the same situation. Jigen is prickly and thinks she’s just after Lupin’s body. The only thing she really wanted was to exchange chests, but that problem was solved and not much of Jigen’s business anyways. Goemon was shy and a little funny to mess with. He gave her hair tips and they became fast friends in exchanging passing tips. A lot of her anger dies down. She stills hates laws and systems like foster care but she’s not as angry at the world because people like her can do just fine when they get the right family. And she has her family, finally.

I have no authority on this whatsoever but going off instinct I feel that a few of the lupin Marie moments are actually kinda funny and not transphobic and some of the moments really are the unfortunate“man in a dress” transphobia/transmisogyny. That kind of humor plagues media especially in the past like the 70s when it was made or the early 2000s when it was dubbed. Lupin can be kinda a great chance for everyone to dive into these things. But it’s ok if you still like Marie! The series is pretty much inseparable from these things and I would rather use them as a learning moment than any outright cancelation.
ALSO I think a lot of gay and trans people embrace and reclaim Marie and other cross dressing moments since being GNC, doing drag or simply being gender fluid involves a lot of different gender expression. And that’s especially ok to like her cause of that ! it can be fun and really positive to reclaim something that might have been thoughtless originally or meant to hurt you and make it into something to celebrate and represent you. I’m not blaming or judging trans people or gay people for reclaiming that! Only that when reclaiming anything it’s really important and good to be aware of the likely original intent of the joke. (Although I’m sure many are, others in the fan community might not be). And it’s good to know and be prepared for why some members of the community might not feel good about it, may ask you to tag and trigger warn. Or not associate with those episodes altogether. Particularly if they’re trans women and directly impacted by it
Anyway the “fujiko this is the most important moment in a girls lifetime” line is really cute to me. the delivery is so sincere it feels more like lupin is fully committed to this character as if he’s doing drag or expressing himself non-traditionally I love that moment. It didn’t feel like he was making fun of the girl he’s playing at all and the humor was in the absurdity of him focusing on his fake wedding instead of the heist and in him saying something so cute and wistful at such a critical moment.
It can be hard to describe why some cross-dressing moments in the series don’t come off as hateful but others do. But it might have something to do with if the underdog and vulnerable party in the situation is being mocked or not or if the gag is more a subverted expectation that doesn’t involve gender (like in this case the subverted expectation is lupin caring about his wedding more instead of the crime, even if he was saying that jokingly cause he doesn’t want fujiko to blow their cover. The joke itself there isn’t hehe man in a dress which can carry a lot more mockery) I just think these nuances can be interesting to look at for why some humor on those subjects can land for me and others just feel cruel and do not, for me at least
Again I do want this to be an open discussion this is my musings and not the voice of any authority. I identify as a cis woman and bi 👍 so this is all more my best guess and various thoughts with an invitation to take it away, especially if it applies to you

I hate the transphobia in this episode but I do like how it inadvertently turned into "Goemon is canonically in love with a trans woman"
