Misterican Physiology / Culture: Smell and Taste

You should have known I was going to get through all five senses eventually. So it’s about time I rambled about this and I was brain rotting it last night so here we go.

I have previously mentioned Mistericans are highly sensitive to substances like alcohol and caffeine or even sugar. Well I was brain rotting the sugar part of it and it made me think.

Mistericans have a heightened sense of smell and taste when compared to a human. While it’s not by much, sugar does taste twice as sweet to a Misterican when compared to a human. A Misterican can also pick out the sweet taste in something more easily and there’s a reason for this.

The Misterican body required twice the energy to operate due to their ability to fly and also because of Mist production. Mistericans burn through energy faster because of bodily functions that humans simply don’t have. Staying in the air costs energy, as does keeping their lungs under pressure - even if doing so is an unconscious function.

So to supplement this, Mistericans have an increased sugar intake. They crave it and eating it in what would have been an excess quantity to a human is a normal amount to a Misterican. They love all things sweet and sugary because it is a normal cultural habit for them to consume them.

A Misterican diet was composed of more vegetarian style dishes than meat, and while some do consume small amounts of meat, there were many who would have been considered vegan by human standards and this is both a religious choice and common practice. Mistericans believed in Life over all due to the Teachings of Tiamat so the consumption of another life wasn’t something they agreed with in most cases. They where known to fish and to pull harvest from the seas at the foot of the mountains but to keep livestock for consumption was unheard of.

Mistericans only consume from the seas because that bounty was seen as a blessing from the Celestial Mother but anything else? Absolutely not. But at the top of the do not touch list were any species of bird. Bird are also Sky Children so it was a taboo concept to consume one’s kin.

So their diets became heavily vegetarian and some even vegan. Thus sugar became a highly sought after item within Misterican culture. They require more sugar to function than a human does and their bodies process it in a different fashion than a human does due to the extra functions and abilities the energy produced needed to support them.

And that’s where those noses come in to play. They’re sensitive to certain smells and can pick out the sweet smell in an object with more ease than another species could. They do this so they can pull it from multiple sources. The sugar industry in Misterican agriculture was easily the largest one and thus they produced many sweet things within the realm of their brought range of cuisine.

So this is why the prince is so receptive of everything sweet in his life. This is why he welcomes all sweet presents. He adores sugar but he needs more of it to function than the average human does, so he keeps sweets on him in the bag he carries with him when he’s out traveling the wilds of Wonderland with Kaze. If Kumo is feeling tired or run down, he will seek it out. He will find himself craving it worse than he does normally and his nose will start to work overtime to try to assist in this task.

He has the ability to both taste and smell the differences in sweeteners. He can tell you the difference between white sugar, brown sugar, pure cane, etc. and he obviously has preferences. All Mistericans did.

So if you want to make a very happy Cloud give him something with high sugar content and he’ll be over the moon and if you catch him eating what you would deem as excess for a normal person - just remember he’s not normal. The boy would drink sugar water and be just as pleased about it.

This is just another reminder than Kumo is not human.

“Panflaps?” Love repeated, arching her eyebrows at the women in front of her, her nose crinkling in confusion. She looked down at the menu, narrowing her eyes in confusion. She hadn’t seen the words panflaps on the diner but she had seen pictures of them with the sign BEST IN TOWN next to them. And she figured she HAD to try them. Thor made good ones so if anyone gave THORs pancakes some compeition, Love would have to rub them in his face or THEIR FACE, either way there woud be face smashing just like Love wanted. “The little brown circle things? That you eat with lots of maple syrup?” Love asked, befor the women working the counter rolled her eyes, and walked off with a nod. “Those are what their called right?” Love asked turning to face the person next to her. “Panflaps?”

And she knew how much it killed somebody to constantly ask if you were okay, and if you were resting, and if you were taking care of yourself. And Faye wasn’t going to be that person. She was just going to take care of them the same way that he had taken care of her when she had lost her mother. “But, the very least, you could let me make dinner, or hell, if you don’t trust my cooking, we could order something.
