#the thing about rebooting twilight and trying to fix it#is that the flaws of the source material are so so so deep and go beyond just like#dont be racist this time md cut the imprinting imo#it would involve being more aware of the toxicity of bella and edwards relationship (they won’t do that)#and there’s elements of this story that are so so so so mormon because smeyer IS mormon#not only is Edward painfully controlling; all the cullens are in on it (see book 3)#there’s a strong underlying message of sexism even among the female vampires really where they only get power once a man turns them#every single aspect of the werewolves are racist#like that’s what I’m leaving that as because I don’t have the tag space or spoons#the werewolves in twilight ARE RACIST. smeyer made up stories and mythology and the depections#of the quileute tribe ARE RACIST from the very beginning#and the fact that jasper not only was a high ranking confederate#but also ILLEGALLY JOINED because he was too young? what the fuck#that’s the tip of the iceberg I wrote a whole final paper on twilight and ran out of page space to do the proper dissertation I wanted#even Charlie y’all love Charlie. he has a terrible moment#when Bella punches Jacob after he kisses her because she doesn’t want him to?#Charlie’s reaction made me pissed I can’t remember it exactly#I’m not saying you can’t read twilight#clearly I still talk about it because it’s interesting to me from a writing standpoint with how bad it is#but I don’t think this is one we should try to ‘make better’#and hot take we don’t need a reboot like barely a decade later#write an original vampire story. learn from twilights mistakes.#i do not think we need to be returning to this ip which is deeply broken and hurtful#yes much of the backlash against twilight was sexist#but there are also valid reasons to dislike and criticize twilight we cannot forget that#unless quileute people are quite literally writing the script#i can see no situation where they are treated with the respect and monetary compensation they deserve#and that is only addressing that singular issue#i don’t even know if a consultant from the quileute tribe would be enough#here’s your rant of the day

Hi! This is my first time requesting anything! Can I request a Twilight fic where the reader is a female Quileute shifter, and some from the pack react to their physical changes after shifting?
Like maybe pre-shift, they start off shorter, maybe a bit chubbier or even scrawny but after they disappear for a while to go through the shifting process, they come back, and they've grown much taller and more toned and muscular like the rest of the pack.
I kinda want to focus on Leah, Paul, Embry, or Seth's reactions in maybe a headcanon form in monogamous relationships. Maybe they imprinted on the reader before the shift but weren't allowed to see them as they were having a really tough time with all the major physical changes.
Any of them are fine, whichever one or ones you feel most comfortable with. If you can do all or some of them, that's great, if you can only do one, that's cool too! Writing is time consuming and if you can't or won't write for 4 characters, I understand!
I apologize if this is too specific, but I've had this idea for such a long time! I love your work and hope you can figure out a way to write my kinda strange request! Don't feel pressured to write this quickly, I know you'll do great!
Characters: Seth, Leah, Paul and Embry
Note: I am slow at writing so bare with me here. I don’t really like this so I might go back and fix this later. Also this is fem!reader as requested :).
Warnings: slight cursing, mentions of homophobia, my writing, this happened in the storylines of Twilight, fear of rejection.
Embry
Tumblr media
You were friends with Jacob, Embry, and Quil before they shifted. Quil never stopped contact with you, though was very little.
You ended up running into them in the woods, they were shirtless, they didn’t do that before. You stormed up to them, demanding an explanation.
Once he made eye contact with you, he froze. The Earth was ripped from him, gravity wasn’t what was keeping him here, it was her.
You started shaking like you were about to shift. Quil forced Embry, despite him just imprinting, and Jacob to go get Sam. Embry wanted to protest, but he needed time to process what just happened.
It was a few days before he saw you again. Poor boy was anxious the whole time. Sam brought you to officially meet the whole pack.
When you walked in, he felt like he lost his breath. You were still you yet...different.
You were taller than before; you were more toned and muscular like the rest of them.
You were still pissed at the trio, but you understood why they avoided you now. To make the situation worse, or better, depends on how you see it, you made eye contact with Embry. You froze, the Earth was ripped from you, gravity wasn’t what was keeping you here, it was him. You were beyond confused on why you felt this way. You made eye contact with the rest of the pack, nothing. Why just Embry?
“I suppose you and Embry should take a walk.” Even though Sam was alpha, he wanted to leave the imprint talk between the two wolves.
Embry took your hand, walking you out of Emily’s house. You allowed him to drag you into the woods. You were walking for 15 minutes before you got fed up, yanking your hand back from his.
“Are you going to explain what the fuck happened back there?” You demanded answers. You wanted to know why you felt like that when you made eye contact with just him.
Embry turned to you and sighed. “Don’t freak out, ok?”
“I’ll try.” You crossed your arms over your chest.
“What happened when you made eye contact with me back at Emily’s is called imprinting.” He paused. You nodded him to continue. “Imprinting is like when you see them, they’re all that matters. It’s no longer gravity, they are the only one keeping you here. You’d do anything for them, their happiness, their safety. It doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship. It can be a brother, a best friend, a protector or something more. She’s you. For you, it’s me. I imprinted back when you stormed up to us in the woods.”
You stood silent for a minute, letting it all sink in. “What do we do now?”
“Well, if you don’t want it, we can reject the bond and move on.” You felt a pang of sadness at the mention of rejecting the bond, you knew he felt it too.
“No, I don’t want to reject it. I don’t know what I want exactly, but we’ll figure it out along the way.”
Leah
Tumblr media
Now, Leah had a hard time in general, her boyfriend leaving her for her cousin, the shift, her father's death, she couldn’t get a break. The last thing she expected was to imprint, and she definitely wasn’t expecting a woman.
You come over to Emily’s often to visit your brother, Jared. Despite visiting often, Leah never once made eye contact with you. She didn’t know why you wouldn’t look at her, but you did. You had a crush on her. You didn’t want to make it obvious because you scared what your brother thought. You just didn’t know you were horrible at hiding, well to everyone, but Leah.
Jared wasn’t happy about your little crush and he definitely wasn’t happy when Leah imprinted on you. It wasn’t homophobia, it was just you were his sister and he didn’t want you dragged into this world more than you already were. Boy, was he in for a big surprise.
Today, you decided to visit the pack. When you showed up, they were being unnecessarily mean to Leah. Quite frankly, you were fed up.
“What are your problems? As far as I know, she hasn’t done anything to deserve you being assholes to her.” The pack went quiet. “So, you bully her for no reason?” No response. “Idiots,” you mumbled.
Leah snickered at your comment. You looked at her, making eye contact. She froze, looking shocked. You look away, blushing. All of a sudden, your brother shot up from his seat.
“Oh, hell no,” he exclaimed. “I know that did NOT just happen.”
“What?” You looked between Leah and Jared. “What’s wrong?”
Jared stormed up to Leah. “You imprinted on my sister?!” Leah looked like she was struggling to get words out.
“You know we can’t control it, Jared. I’m just as shocked as you are.” She tried reasoning with your brother.
“Would someone tell me what’s going on?! What’s an imprint?!” You started shaking, not because of anger, you were stressed. It was obvious whatever Jared was upset about had something to do with you.
“Sam, she’s shaking!” Quil called out.
“Is she going to shift?” Seth questioned, slightly panicked.
“Leah, get her out of here.” Sam ordered. Jared was about to argue before Sam shut him down. “She’s her imprint, Leah is better off helping her.”
Jared let Leah help you, but not without complaining.
You ended up imprinting on her as well.
Once you were able to shift back, Leah saw how different you looked, more toned and taller, like her. She wasn’t going to deny it, she was into you.
She explained everything to you. The shifting, the imprinting, and what it meant for you.
You accepted the imprint, and gave her the world she deserves.
Seth
Tumblr media
You were the new girl at school, well, new-ish. You moved out when you were young, but you still struggling as you remember no one. You were having a hard time with the new school, no friends, and overall, new environment.
Seth just wanted to help the new girl out, he didn’t expect to imprint.
After talking with the pack, he decided the best way was to ease you into everything, but nothing goes as planned.
You ended up shifting at the end of your second week on the reservation. Poor baby Seth didn’t even know until Sam, Paul, and Jared came back from patrol with you.
By time Sam, Jared and Paul came back with you, it was only Seth, Leah, Emily, Quil and Embry there. Who knows where Jacob is.  As they walked in Emily’s house, everyone there glanced up with greetings then went back to what they were doing before.
“Are you boys hungry?” Emily questioned before she turned, spotting a new figure. “Who's this?”
Everyone looked up at you, making you shrink back into yourself from the unwanted attention. “That’s Y/N. She just shifted,” Sam answered as he made a bee-line towards Emily. She smiled as Sam kissed her.
Pulling away from Sam, Emily’s eyes immediately met yours. “Hi, I’m Emily, Sam’s fiancé.” She pulled away from Sam, placing chicken on a plate, setting it down on the table. “Sit, you must be hungry.” She gestured to the only seat left opened.
You took it with a small “thank you.” You sat next to Seth, feeling relieved to at least recognize someone.
Meanwhile, Seth was struggling not to make eye contact with you. He didn’t want the weight of the imprint bond put on you. Moreover, he feared rejection and the pain that came with it.
He noticed how different you looked after the shift. You were taller, tall as or taller than his sister. You were more toned and muscular. He never stared long, he felt like he was being a creep by staring.
You loosened up around the pack fairly quickly. You even got close with Leah, but Seth barely looked at you despite helping you the first couple of weeks you moved back.
One day, before patrol, you cornered him.
“Is there something wrong with me?” You demanded. You wanted answers and you wanted them now.
“No-”
“Then why won’t you look at me?” You interrupted. You knew you were being rude and hard on the sweet boy, but it was stressing you. Seth didn’t bother responding, he knew if he got it done and over with, you’d know and get the rejection over with.
When Seth made eye contact with you, making you freeze. When you snapped out of it, you wondered “what was that?”
He took a deep breath, “You imprinted on me. Imprinting is like when you see them, they’re all that matters. It’s no longer gravity, they are the only one keeping you here. You’d do anything for them, their happiness, their safety. It doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship. It can be a brother, a best friend, a protector or something...else. I’ve already imprinted. You don’t have to accept the bond; I don’t want to force you into anything.”
You went silent for a couple minutes. He thought you were trying to find a way to let him down easy. You weren’t, you were just trying to process what he just said.
“It’s alright if you don’t want to accept.”
You shook your head, instantly dismissing his worry about your refusal. “No, I think I want to try this out.”
You swore you have never seen someone with a smile as big as his in that moment. He suddenly pulled you in a hug, but was welcome nonetheless.
Paul
Tumblr media
You were friends with Embry, Jacob, and Quil before they shifted. When Embry and Jacob disappeared, they kept little contact with you, but hey, it was something.
Every time you talked, they hinted at what they were. You were their best friend, they wanted you to know. What they didn’t know is you caught on pretty quickly to what they were, you just never said anything as it wasn’t your business.
You met Bella through Jacob while they were repairing the motorcycles together. When Jacob disappeared, she confided in you. She dragged you everywhere with her. This time, she dragged you to confront Jacob about what he was.
Jacob was asleep by time you got to his house, but Bella saw the rest of the pack outside and decided to confront them instead. Which led to where you currently were.
“What did you do?!” Bella stormed towards Sam, clearly on a mission here. You were only a step behind her.
“What did you do to him?” She shoved into Sam. There was a chorus of “Bella, stop”, “watch out”, and “easy”.
“He didn’t want this.” You stopped next to her, standing in between her and Sam, slightly.
“What did we do? What did he do? What did he tell you?” Judging by what Embry and Jacob told you, that was Paul and the shorter one next to him was Jared.
“Both of you calm down,” Sam tried calming the situation.
“He tells me or Y/N nothing because he’s scared of you!” Paul and Jared started laughing at this. Paul looked at you, making eye contact. His smile faltered. You barely caught it before Bella punched him.
“Bella!” You reprimanded her. Paul started breathing heavily. You had a bad feeling about this.
“I think we should move,” you tried tugging her out of the way.
“Bella, Y/N, get back!” You moved to the side, closer to Embry. “Paul, calm down.”
Then it happened.
He shifted.
Out of shock, you tripped over your feet and fell backwards. Embry came up behind you, pulling you out of the way.
Everything was a blur, it was confusing. First, you were shaking, then you had paws? Were you a wolf?! Now, you were scared and confused.
Paul, in wolf form, trotted over to you, nosing you, completely forgetting about Bella. ‘Are you alright?’ his voice sounded like it was in your head.
‘What the fuck? Why is your voice in my head?’
‘We have a mind-link when we are in our wolf form,’ Paul responded. You looked up at him, freezing like he did just moments before.
Paul took you into the woods where he came from with the pack (minus Jacob). He taught you to shift back. Jacob gave you clothes beforehand.
Yes, Paul turned as you changed because he’s a gentleman.
But clothes didn’t stop him from seeing the difference between you now and you before. Being a gentleman certainly didn’t stop him from complimenting you, we are talking about Paul here.
He, then, sat you down on the ground to explain everything, well, most things. He was shocked you know the majority about shifting and wolves.
When he explained imprinting, you were a bit tentative about the whole thing. You suggested going slow with the imprint thing, but you accepted it nonetheless.

What we're not gonna do with the twilight reboot news is forget that:
Bella is a victim of emotional abuse/neglect at Renee's hands (it explains why she's Like That. It is never addressed.)
Rosalie was raped (they mention it in passing and Bella has no real reaction to this reveal outside of the comparison of kill histories after being turned. It's never discussed or really shown as impacting her character outside of that few pages in the FINAL book. Otherwise it's glossed over. As is Bella's attempted rape and her SA by Jacob where she BREAKS HER HAND)
Jasper was a confederate soldier (aka: Yes Slaves) This is also never really addressed as is the fate of "major side characters". No negative reactions are given to that reveal.
The La Push (Quileute) are a real tribe turned into a disrespectful racist trope and "fictional" people who saw no money from their usage in the series
Or that there is condoned pedophilic grooming by the wolves imprinting on small children and NEWBORNS
There was also the hypersexualization of still minor Taylor Lautner and grown women getting off to characters 17 years old or younger. And the fact Meyer apparently wrote a very nsfw sex scene with forever 17 year old Edward (she wrote the first book when she was 35 in 2003 And BD was 2008 so she was 40*)
Yeah there's all the haha funny memes about the series but it has serious issues that are never addressed both in and out of the books. I'm probably even forgetting some things
(*adults can write YA fiction but graphic sex scenes with minors is a huge red flag)

Phasing - Re: Leah, Billy, Jacob
[Why Leah didn't phase when the Cullens first returned, was Billy Black ever a wolf and why Jacob phased after the Cullens left]
In the Twilight universe, some members of the Quileute Tribe can 'phase' into werewolves under a few conditions:
They must be a direct descendant of Taha Aki, the first Quileute to phase (early 13th century). These descendants "are born with twenty-four chromosomal pairs rather than the twenty-three pairs of a normal human"
"This extra chromosome will not have any effect on the carrier if he or she is not in close proximity to vampires during all or part of the critical time between the onset of puberty and the age of twenty-five. If the potential werewolf is not exposed to vampires within this window of time, transformation will never occur. It is the scent of the vampires that triggers the reaction.."
When in close proximity to vampires, it is always the youngest in each family's lineage to phase, becoming a "protector" against the vampires
If the youngest member in a given family's lineage is not between the onset of puberty and 25, they will not phase and neither will their parents/elders
(It is "based on two factors: heritage and the proximity of vampires")
The other factors worth considering are:
"One factor affecting which members of the tribe transform is the number of vampire scents in the area"
"... the pack has usually consisted of three members. With most vampires traveling alone or in pairs, there was never a need for more..."
Members with the strongest blood ties phase first. As more vampires are present, tribe members with weaker blood ties start to phase
Until 2006, only male carriers of the gene had gained the ability to transform
The Cullens first moved to Hoquiam (aprx. 100 miles from La Push) in 1936. At this point, the confirmed "protectors" are Ephraim Black, Quil Ateara II and Levi Uley. Tracing their lineages it is probable that none of them had children that had reached transformation age yet. Billy Black was not born until the late 1950's so he obviously couldn't have phased here. However, the Cullens stayed in the area until 2003 when they moved to Forks (only ~16 miles from the Quileutes in La Push). Though Ephraim Black was likely deceased by this time, his grandson Billy was well past 25 (about 50) and Jacob Black was born but was only 13, meaning neither of them could transform (cond. 2).
Let's put a pin in that to quickly talk about Jacob. It makes sense that he didn't phase in 2003 when the Cullens arrived in Forks because he was only 13. But the Cullens left Forks in September of 2005 and Jacob didn't phase until February, 2006. There were only 2 vampires present in Forks when Jacob first phased, Laurent and Victoria. The Cullen family consists of 7 vampires, so why didn't he transform while they were around? Well, the transformation had actually already started before they left. The first sign of transformation in male gene carriers is a "noticeable growth spurt". When Jacob goes to see Bella at the prom in May, 2005 she comments on how much Jacob has grown.
Tumblr media
(Twilight, Epilogue)
So this leaves me with one question unanswered. Going back to 2003, when the Cullens moved to Forks, the only Quileute who phased was Sam Uley, who was 17 at the time. But so was Leah Clearwater. So why didn't she also phase? At this point in time, there had never been a female werewolf, but Leah did eventually become the first around March of 2006, also after the Cullens had left. We can assume that the transformation had began before they left, just like Jacob. So the question is:
Why didn't Leah phase when Sam did in 2003?
There is no definitive answer to this that I can find. The real answer is "Smeyer didn't think that far" but, in universe, it seems like female werewolves were supposed to only be possible under exceptional circumstances. Perhaps, it was supposed to be the passing of her father that triggered her transformation, but we can rule that out because, when she first phased, "She was arguing with her mother about her mood swings, and her father joined the conversation in support of her mother. Leah was so angry that her whole body started shaking, and then she exploded into a werewolf...". So if Smeyer's intended reasoning is "exceptional circumstances", she either forgot or there just isn't a real reason, at least not one that I could find.

So this is random but one of the things I love about Bill Condon as one of the Twilight directors is I feel like he upped everybody's game when he came onto the project. Not only did we get better performances out of the actors but we also got some things that weren't shown earlier or were but weren't really focused on too much (or not in the right way).
Case in point, the scene where Rosalie and Emmett go to find Garrett. Usually when we see the Cullens it's from Bella's pov or related to her in some way. They're seen as the good guys. Or if they're facing insurmountable odds like in New Moon with the Volturi and the innocent people being led to their deaths, they can't be expected to do anything. Here, Rosalie and Emmett aren't facing those odds but they don't do anything except look away when Garrett continues killing his victim. You also see the difference in Rosalie's and Emmett's reactions. Rosalie is not a fan as she shouldn't be and Emmett looks semi-amused even if he really isn't.
This is immediately followed up by the scene where Jacob and Bella stare around the Cullens house at the newcomers with red eyes. We get Bella's voiceover talking about how Renesmee is winning over every one of them and who is there. But we not only have Rosalie holding onto Renesmee while she's using her power with Garrett (which is very telling about how much Rosalie doesn't trust him I think) but we also see Jacob scanning the room and Bella taking notice. Bella remarks that their thirst for human blood makes the situation complicated and then says "The nomads Rosalie and Emmett sent were even more unpredictable."
Then: "A lot of red eyes around here." Bella: "They promised they wouldn't hunt in the area." Jacob: "But they'll feed somewhere."
And then it goes into the scene where another young Quileute boy turns into a werewolf and Bella's voiceover is saying it's happening more and more now due to the large vampire presence.
And this is just brilliant I think because it's multi-layered. The Cullens are set apart from the red-eyes vampires but it's not giving them a pass either besides their different lifestyles. It's also showing how selfish all of this really is. Like yes, we want the protagonist Bella and her family to be safe, but ultimately this is all happening because of her and the choices she made.
They even go so far as to show the difference in Carlisle and Esme's interaction with Benjamin and his coven compared to Rosalie and Emmett's with Garrett. Carlisle and Esme ask Maggie and her coven, though we don't see this convo but in the house they're separate from the Nomads. And then they have a similar setup for the scene of Garrett's acquiring compared to what happens when Aro and company catch up to Toshiro that Carlisle had been trying to ask to join them and what happens to him.
Not to mention Jacob was the first to stand to join the fight when Edward asks. You can say that's due to his imprint on Renesmee, but it's also to show yet again who are the real good guys when it comes to the vampires. Once he does, only then do others stand up and join as well (after Bella does to show the Cullens and the Packs are together).
The vampires aren't the good guys. Even the veggie ones. And that was absolutely driven home here in this sequence. And that to me is just absolutely fascinating.
Not saying Stephenie Meyer didn't cover some of this in the book (I haven't read it in a long time so I don't really remember). Not taking away credit from Melissa Rosenberg who wrote the screenplay but she wrote all five films and this is the first time I've seen a director really able to show what's really underneath Bella's choices in a way that you can't ignore it or sweep it under the epic romance rug. So that's why I'm saying Bill Condon was brilliant and I'm glad he was the one to steer the Saga into its close.
And I love it when directors are able to accomplish shit like that.

Why Twilight is a Good Movie (Narrative Analysis Part 1)
Twilight is a cheesy romantic movie with vampires. It started off as a book series and was then made into a movie series. A lot of people say that Twilight is the worst movie ever made. Using the three-act structure I will explain why it extremely entertaining.
Act 1: The Set Up Bella leaves Phoenix because her step dad is on a minor league baseball team and they're starting their season and traveling. She arrives in Forks Washington and lives with her Father Charlie who is the Police Chief. Bella starts going to school where she meets Edward. Edward and Bella are lab partners and Edward has a strange reaction to Bella like he's disgusted by her (10:32). Edward rushes out of class as soon as the bell rings and tries to transfer classes. Which Bella overhears in the office. After that day Edward does not come to school for awhile.
When Edward returns to school he introduces himself and apologizes to Bella (16:58). They talk about her family and why she came to forks. The first off thing Bella notices about Edward is his eyes and hoe they change color. She brings this up to him and he says " It's the fluorescents" and storms away (20:39). At the end of the school day a student loosing control of his van and it almost hits Bella. Edward stopped the van just in time with his bare hands denting the van and saves Bella. At this point Bella knows Edward is not normal.
A few days later Bella invites Edward to La Push Beach. Edward declines because it's "too crowded" (31:44). When Bella is at La Push She says that she invited Edward and one of Jacob's friends says "The Cullen's don't come here." Bella later asks Jacob what his friend meant by that and he tells her about the Quileute legends. Jacob is a part of the Quileute tribe and he tells Bella that they were descended from wolves. He says that the Cullen's were an enemy clan and that the Quileute's made a treaty with them saying that if they stay of Quileute land they will expose them for what they really are. Bella asks Jacob what he means by that and he does not answer and says it's just a story (34:44).
Later that night Bella is walking alone on the street and starts getting harassed by men. Edward comes out of nowhere and saves her again. They go out to a restaurant and Edward does not get anything to eat. He says he's "On a special diet." (41:42). He accidentally lets it slip that he can read minds. After that, Bella starts to do research on the Quileute legends and comes to the conclusion the Edward is a vampire.
The next day at school Bella leads Edward into the forest (49:41). She tells him that she knows he's a vampire. I consider this to be the end of act one. The whole movie up until this point is leading up to the audience finding out Edward's secret. Once it's exposed that Edward is a vampire the story really starts to pick up.

I’m W bit awkward and don’t really know how to accept compliments or anything but it means a lot when people say them. I always fall in love quite fast. When I’m in a relationship I’ll pretty much do anything for my partner. I show my love through practical favours and gifts.

Immortal spirits
So I’ve just put a few things together and realised something that works so buckle in because you’re about to have your socks blown off
Cannot believe I didn’t realise this like 10 years ago when The Guide came out
Here we go:
Some background: in the Twilight universe, the wolves got their power from Chief Taha Aki. He left his body to go into the spirit world, and another man called Utlapa entered his body and used it, pretending to be Taha Aki. Taha Aki entered the body of the Great Wolf (who had allowed him to do so) and enraged at seeing what Utlapa was doing as he pretended to be the tribal leader, the wolf transformed into Taha Aki and Utlapa was found out. Taha Aki gained the ability to change to-and-from wolf form since then, and found that as long as he did not abandon his wolf form, he did not age like his first two wives (who both died of old age).
Important to note from this is that:
The wolves are immortal as long as they keep phasing
It is likely their spirits keeping them immortal, as obviously spirits cannot age, and as long as the pack members embrace their wolf side they do not age
If humans who discovered magic can enter the spirit world, and the wolves – immortals – were created by this spirit world and have reactions to other immortal kinds, then the magic the tribe used is related to whatever makes vampires (and their gifts) tick. If they were not somehow intertwined then they would not find vampires repulsive, and vice versa; there would be no reaction to meeting other immortals if they were not of the same sphere
I have a theory that once a vampire is killed, it is simply that their body is destroyed and their spirit lives on. Well, they’re immortal, right? As the spirit world the tribe explored was the same world as the living, and they could observe the living (like ghosts I suppose), it is likely that the vampire “afterlife” is exactly the same place. Their spirits walk among us.
Carlisle has not lost his soul. Aro is wrong. Surely he will be considering the history of the wolves, now he knows it?
Vampires’ bodies are burnt but their spirits live on and interact with each other as they would have done while living (minus the ability to kill one another).
However, as the ability for spirits to enter bodies stands, this leaves the gate open for possession.
If the humans  could possess each other’s bodies (like Utlapa possessed Taha Aki), then dead vampires – spirits without bodies – can posses them too. Yet what if vampires were able to enter, and control, the bodies of humans whose spirits are still inside their bodies?
For Utlapa to possess Taha Aki’s body he needed Taha Aki to have left his body, and for Taha Aki to get into the body of the Great Wolf he needed permission, but we know that vampires are a lot stronger than humans.
Second, a vampire is not going to ask permission – a vampire may have been able to force its way into the Great Wolf. What is a wolf compared to a vampire? The Quileutes have respect for nature and animals, but most vampires don’t. Not even the Cullens do.
How many dead vampires have possessed living humans? How many humans are trapped in their bodies watching someone else do everything in their name? Could this be where the ideas of poltergeists, changelings and possession come from? What if someone who was possessed was changed? Are there vampires everyone believes dead walking around living new lives as humans, experiencing human life over and over again? What about Children of the Moon? Do they have immortal spirits too? Is killing one’s body actually killing its spirit? If when Caius dies, will he be met with an afterlife full of his personal nightmare? It opens a world of possibilities!
I have a theory (not necessarily one I believe in but find absolutely fascinating) about one particular person who might have been possessed, to be discussed in a later post.
Keen to hear everyone’s thoughts on this!

SPOILERS AHEAD
Tumblr media
First of all, you have no idea how excited I am to finally be reviewing this. (I have popcorn!)
Twilight may perhaps be one of the most recognizable films of the early 2000s vampire craze. Now, whenever someone mentions the word Vampire I immediately think of Twilight. (Also The Vampire Diaries, but that’s a story for another day.)
Twilight follows seventeen-year-old outcast Isabella “Bella” Swan, after her relocation to Forks, Washington, from Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father, Charlie. Charlie is the towns’ police chief, while her mother, Renee, is married to a minor league baseball player named Phil.
After the move, Bella becomes reunited with childhood friend Jacob Black, a Native American teenager living with his father, Billy on the Quileute Indian Reservation near Forks. Bella soon makes friends at her high school but is drawn to the aloof and quiet Cullen siblings consisting of Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, Emmett, and the famous Edward Cullen. She is seated next to Edward in biology, to which he acts almost repulsed by her. After the Cullens are absent from school for a week, Edward returns to class and socializes with Bella. A couple of days later, an out of control driver nearly crashes Bella in the school parking lot, but Edward instantly covers a distance by thirty or so feet in order to prevent the van from striking her. After arriving at the hospital, Edward refuses to explain his actions to Bella, ultimately warning her against being friends with him. Jacob then informs Bella of the long-standing rivalry between the Cullens and the Quileutes and that the Cullen family is not allowed on the reservation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bella then begins to research Edward’s condition, ultimately concluding that he is a vampire. He confirms this but pleads with Bella that he and his family only consume animal blood. They soon fall in love, and Edward introduces Bella to his family, where she meets Carlisle, the family father, and a doctor at Forks Hospital, Esme, the family mother, and their formally adopted children Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, and Emmett. The family’s reaction to Bella is generally positive except for Rosalie’s, who fears that her family’s secret can now be exposed.
Bella and Edward’s relationship is soon jeopardized when James, Victoria, and Laurent, three nomadic vampires arrive in Forks territory. They are responsible for a series of attacks leading up to and in the Forks territory. James, who’s described as a tracker vampire with incredible hunting instincts, is consumed by Bella’s scent and becomes obsessed with hunting her. Edward and the other Cullens protect Bella, but James ultimately tracks her to Phoenix, Arizona, where she’s hiding with Jasper and Alice. James lures Bella into her old ballet studio as a trap, attacking Bella and infecting her with vampire venom. Edward arrives and fights James, subduing him until the other Cullens arrive. Alice, Jasper, and Emmett kill James, decapitating and burning him.
In the aftermath, Bella suffered a broken leg and is hospitalized. Edward accepts Bella’s invitation to their high school prom, where he refuses her request to turn her into a vampire. They are unaware that Victoria, James’ lover, is secretly watching them, in schemes to avenge his death.
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about Twilight as a cultural phenomenon. It pleased devoted fans to the novel series, while also defining an early generation of the vampire-romance genre. I was five when the first Twilight movie was released, so it was never a huge part of my life growing up. However, I do remember the cultural aspect of the films. I remember going to the mall in the mid-2000s and seeing posters and pictures for it everywhere. Twilight, like it or not, was everywhere from 2008 to 2012 and has experienced a surge in popularity since Stephanie Myer’s release of Midnight Sun, which is Twilight told from Edward’s perspective.
If you couldn’t already tell, I’m a huge fan of Hardwicke’s directing style. I think if she continues to direct the following Twilight films, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn 1 & 2. I would have enjoyed the later movies as much if not more if I enjoyed the first one. However, that’s not to say that I don’t enjoy the series as a whole. I think it truly defined the early-mid 2000s, and the nostalgia of the movie I think is more remembered than the actual story.
Tumblr media
My friends and I still have Twilight marathons to this day. Do I think it’s deep? No. It’s about a girl falling in love with a 108-year-old vampire, of course, it’s not deep. Plus, the film, novels, and the story are directed at teenage girls, who of course back then, couldn’t possibly understand the complexity of a well-written and well-developed script. Do films have to be deep in order to enjoy them? No, absolutely not. I think that most of the people who heavily critique Twilight think that it needs to be deep in order to be enjoyable. Twilight, in no shape or form, I think claims to be deep. I think it’s a cultural phenomenon, and because of that, people think it has to be the next generation-defying film that has to be good. I also think that it’s more popular to hate Twilight because it's directed toward teenage girls, and, as we’ve learned, teenage girls can’t have anything without being made fun of.
Tumblr media
I also want to talk about Bella’s plainness. When I see critiques on Twilight or Bella’s character in general, said critiques typically argue that Bella’s lack of personality in the films (and book) is a major turn-off. I agree that she’s plain, but I don’t agree that she’s a major turn off when it comes to my love for Twilight and the saga as a whole. Truthfully, she was designed to be a plain and somewhat modest teenage girl. Everyone around her, especially her friends, are full of life, while she is frankly dull. She is one of those characters that is written to coincide with another, that being Edward Cullen.
In my perspective, they are two sides of the same coin. For example, Bella believes that she has nothing to live for, while Edward is pushing and pushing her to live and have the life he never got to live. Bella is extremely realistic for a teenage girl, honestly. Her “normal” attributes make Edward seem more desirable and God-like. I think it's time we stop picking on the “boringness” of characters written for and about teenage girls, mostly because I think it's just another thing that young girls can be put in a box for. If they’re not interesting or captivating enough for a certain audience, they’re plain and dull and lifeless. If they’re too interesting or captivating, there’s always something wrong with them (hence the manic pixie dream girl trope). Bella, I believe is written against that trope, and that is why she’s boring.
Tumblr media
I enjoy Twilight. I do. And I’m not ashamed of it. I don’t think every movie has to be life-changing to be defined as a cultural phenomenon, or even enjoyable. I think when people say that Twilight is “bad” we have to ask ourselves what a “bad” movie is. “Bad” and “good” is completely subjective to who is watching it. As a teenage girl in my life right now, I enjoy watching Twilight. Truth be told, I like the story, and I like the nostalgia attached to it.
I wonder if my feelings would be different if I was a teenage girl in 2008 when the Twilight film was first released. I wonder if I would hate it because I was told to hate it, or if I would like it because it’s something that I enjoy. Nonetheless, the first Twilight film will always have a special place in my nostalgic little teenage girl heart, everything from Bella’s bleak green and purple bedroom to the clearness of the Cullen's barely used kitchen.
Overall rating: 9/10 (For the nostalgia, of course.)

I think if fiction didn’t matter we wouldn’t be rallying for better representation. But at the same time, there’s plenty of fiction that so clearly doesn’t try to impose a moral. Are you of the opinion that any fiction that displays objectively horrible things in a gratifying lense should be banned? Would you call people who liked the saw films monsters? What about first person shooter games? Any porn that features power imbalances as a kink?
Short answer, to all of those questions: No. Absolutely not.
But of course, as it’s me, have a much longer answer:
Here’s the thing that the ‘FICTION AFFECTS REALITY’/’IF YOU LIKE DARKFIC YOU’RE A MONSTER’ crowd fails to realize: when we say ‘fiction is not reality’ we are not saying ‘fiction doesn’t matter’ or ‘fiction has no affect on reality whatsoever’. What we are saying is that fiction does not have a direct, 1:1 affect on reality. ‘Normal’ people will NEVER read a piece of fiction and suddenly become a pedophile. Normal people will not read a piece of fiction and forget about boundaries. Normal people will not read a piece of fiction and suddenly think that societal taboos which used to disgust them are A-OK and then try to enact them in their real lives.
Antis really love to cite the Jaws Effect when talking about how fiction affects reality, but they miss one crucial point--Jaws was playing on the pre-existing fears of the movie-going public. (And also the fact that Jaws had millions of viewers worldwide and reached a far greater audience, and therefore had far greater impact, than some niche darkfic on ao3 ever will.) It’s the same argument that’s been trotted out again and again by the ‘violent video games turn normal happy kids into school shooters’ crowd. Can playing violent video games temporarily heighten someone’s aggression/make someone already prone to violence even more aggressive? Sure. Will playing violent video games (or watching/reading violent media) make someone with a normally healthy emotional responses to stimuli suddenly become a violent person? Absolutely not.
Like, I love games like Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. I love slipping into Ancient Greece and running around, merrily hacking and slashing my way through Athenians and Spartans. I’ve never once gotten the urge to pick up a sword and go outside and start sticking it in people. I know plenty of people who love Grand Theft Auto and don’t have a violent bone in their body. I greatly enjoy taking head shots as a sniper in Mass Effect, but I’ve never picked up a high-powered rifle in my life. (I go to the shooting range sometimes, with my grandad’s old .22, but I certainly have never wanted to shoot anyone with it.) My taste for video game violence has never translated to my reactions or interactions with other people in real life. Because I’m not a violent person, and while I can’t say I’m mentally healthy, I can say that I’ve never wanted to hurt other people. (And I have one of those ‘scary’ mental illnesses that get demonized all the time in popular media.)
So like, here’s the thing: first of all, the argument that video game or media violence (or abuse, rape, incest, pedophilia, etc) creates violence (or etc) in otherwise normal people is absolute bullshit. You may hear antis trotting out the Slenderman killings as another example, but they again fail to take into account that even if the game was the trigger, it was not the cause, and if it hadn’t existed, something else would have set them off. (And that was 2 people out of the, I’m gonna guess, millions of people who’ve played the game or watched let’s plays or whatever else. Not exactly terrifying odds.)
Secondly, you have to remember that while fiction and reality do have a relationship and do have an affect on one another, that affect is far more noticeable from the other direction. Fiction informs reality--it is often a direct reflection of it. This is why Greek tragedies became so popular--because people saw in them the human condition, in all its ugliest parts, and found extreme catharsis in watching it unfold. And this is part of why, yes, representation is so important--because, right now, most fiction is not an accurate reflection of reality, and that creates an unbalanced dynamic that’s going to take a very long time to fix.
Which leads to my final point, that is most often overlooked by antis who insist that fiction cannot be separated from reality: mass media reaches a far greater audience than fanfiction. Yes, it’s bad that so much of Hollywood fare is white--because Hollywood has reach. Billions of people tune in to watch the latest blockbuster. Your average niche darkfic on ao3 will never reach that kind of audience, not in a million years. The effect of that reach is simply not comparable. If someone who is already prone to violence plays a game or watches a movie or tv show that glorifies it, sure, it may heighten their violent response, but that’s because it’s playing on something that’s already there. The fiction itself is not to blame for whatever the person who viewed it chooses to do.
One last thing, since this is something that I feel doesn’t get mentioned enough in these debates: if you’ve been following me long enough, you’ll probably have seen me rag on Twilight or 50 Shades of Grey. I hate both of those series’ with a burning passion. I think they’re badly written tripe, one of which began as fanfic of badly written tripe (and if 50sog had languished in the annals of internet obscurity as Master of the Universe and not become a multi-million dollar hit, I’d probably never have heard of it--again, the difference in reach between niche fanfic and a mass media sensation), and I hate the way the abusive relationships in both of them are glorified. I think the ‘themes’ Twilight spoonfed preteen girls who ate it up are harmful. I think the racism involved in its depiction of the Quileute tribe was despicable. I think everything 50sog had to say about BDSM and the kink community is horrific, and deserves to be called out.
But you know what else these books did?
They started conversations. Conversations that may not have happened to such a wide degree had these books not become famous. (Not that I’m saying it’d be any great loss if they’d never seen the light of day, but hey, they did, and we have to live with the fallout, so at least something good came out of it.) Conversations that desperately needed to be had--about red flags in abusive relationships, about what is ok and not ok to do or say to your partner, about what consent is and what healthy relationships are, and what a healthy BDSM/kink relationship should look like. (I swear to the gods if any anti kinksters start crawling all over this post, I will eat their toes. Stay out of consenting adults’ bedrooms for the love of all that is fucking holy.) Conversations about safe words and how to use them, and how it is always ok to use them please dear lord do not let things progress past the point of your comfort. Conversations about the real life Quileute tribe who has been trying for years to talk about the realities of tribal life, which were so butchered by Twilight, but that hopefully brought more awareness and helped show what not to do when you’re incorporating a real life culture into your work.
These are important conversations, which may not have been had to the widespread degree that they were and are were it not for the cultural phenomena that sparked them. So no, I don’t think it’s wrong to point out if an author is, for instance, glorifying harmful things in their works--however, I do think that the reach of the work in question matters. If you’re targeting a work with a few thousand hits at most, ask yourself: why? Why this work, and not an actual cultural powerhouse like, say, Game of Thrones, which features such hits as the showrunners openly admitting they waited for a teenage actress to turn 18 so they could film a scene where her character is brutally raped on screen? Why is it so important to draw attention to some niche work of darkfic (especially if it’s properly tagged so that it can be avoided by anyone to whom it would be harmful; and by the way, these tags don’t exist for things like, oh, VC Andrews novels, which any kid can pick up in a library without warning; I think that even a glorified/romanticized rape scene that is tagged as rape on ao3 is less harmful than similar themes occurring without warning in a book I picked up because it had pretty flowers on the cover), when you can easily find the exact same things in published, popular fiction?
Just something to think about, before trying to insist that fanfics that reach an audience of a few thousand at most are anywhere on the level of ‘affecting reality’ the same way that mass media that reaches billions is capable of.

Twilight Imagine
Pack x TransGuy-Reader
Request: Could i request a twilight imagine where a friend of the wolf pack’s tells them all that he’s a trans guy, and their reactions to it?
A/N: This is the first time for me to write about a trans guy so if someone thinks I wrote something in the wrong way or kinda dumb or anything else please please please tell me.
Tumblr media
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
You were nervous, not to say nearly afraid. And a little part of you was ashamed because of these feelings, after all they were your friends. Your best friends which you knew since ... you were practically born.
You grew up together, laughed and fought together and you always had each other's back.
But this ... was something you couldn't just imagine how they would react to. And you were afraid that the pack would never look at you with the same eyes again.
You had known it for a long time now. There was just something about the fact that in games you'd always picked the role of a guy, you always felt more comfortable in a boy group than a group of girls and so much more.
You just didn't feel like a girl. It took you a little time before you knew the reasons behind it and could finally identify yourself as a trans guy.
And today was the day you finally wanted to tell your best friends, the Quileute Tribe, your other family.
Admittedly, the last few days had passed quiet between you and the pack as you needed your time to prepare for this.
Afterwards you couldn't quite understand why you'd been so anxious as you knew your friends and their possibly reactions.
But still... the nasty voices inside your head wouldn't keep their mouth shut.
You lifted your hand to knock on the wooden door but stopped suddenly just inches away.
'You can do that' you told your self.
Yes, you will be fine.
With a deep breath you knocked three times.
One moment passed by.
Another one.
And then finally the door flew open and Embry's grinning face appeared in front of you.
"Y/N, girl! Finally! We thought you vanished without saying goodbye."
"Yeah, or one of these bloodsuckers got you," shouted Paul suddenly appearing next to Embry.
"Are you frozen or why are you two idiots still standing outside? Or no-
wait you can stay here and I'll grab more of Emily's Pizza."
"Pizza?" You exclaimed, suddenly feeling way better with the thought of sitting around in the Cosy house, surrounded by your family and eating Pizza.
"You wish, Paul, not when I get it first!"
With these words you stormed inside the house leaving the boys right behind you who just shared a grin. Yes, they were happy to have you back.
As soon as you entered the kitchen of the house, in which the pack had assembled all the heads spinned around as soon as they noticed you and just immediately they all stood up from their places.
"Y/N, nice to see ya, girl!"
"I've told you not to vanish in your school work!"
"Have you cut your hair?"
"Told you she can't live without us for too long"
You stepped into the room, the hesitation in your actions was clearly visible.
Emily frowned with concern in her eyes.
"Y/N... Is something not right? Did something happened?"
The room immediately silenced. You bend your head down a little, trying to avoid their glances, but of course you couldn't hide anything from your friends. Not these ones.
Seems like pizza had to wait.
You felt Emily's hand stroking through your hair before she softly lifted your chin to have a closer look at you.
"You can tell us everything... but you already know that, don't you?" She said and gave you an encouraging smile.
You nodded, before you stepped back a little and took a deep breath.
"Guys... I have to- no I need and want to tell you something," you began slowly and made sure to look into ever single one's eyes.
Embry, Jared, Paul, Jacob, Sam, Seth, Leah and Emily.
They had to know how serious you are with what you're going to say.
And they somehow seemed to sense it as no one of them wore their usually Grin or made a sarcastic comment.
Here you go.
"What I'm about to tell you is something very important to me. I know you always had my back, we were friends since childhood and gosh we are family today.
So I think you should be the first ones to know this...
Since a few years this ...feelings keep getting stronger...actually it was more than just a feeling.
I... i think I've always known that I was not born in the right body. I've never felt like I belong in this body ...I've never even felt like a true girl, you know what I mean? So..." You coughed and noticed your glance all again on the floor.
"So...," you heard Embry's voice. "We have another Bro? Awesome!"
You snapped your head in his direction but your view got suddenly blocked by a huge chest and before you knew you felt Jacob's firm arms around you.
"Don't tell me that you idiot avoided us all this time because you were afraid of how we would react?"
After a moment your body relaxed and you let the breath out you didn't knew we're holding the last minute.
Jacob took your silence as a answer and tousled your hair. "You're a dork, Y/N."
Then Emily took your hands in hers. "You've said we're family and family always stick together. I know it is clear but nothing will ever change that."
"Yeah, you could even be a bloodsucker and we would still love you. Well, at least-" Paul's words were silenced by Liah who punched his arm. "Shut up, idiot. Y/N could even be a great bloodsucker."
Between your tears of relief that suddenly appeared in your eyes, an amused laugh escaped you. "Don't worry, Liah, I'd always be half of a wolf," you answered then you noticed something you had forgotten to mention. "Well and there's one more thing..."
"Don't tell me you really are a Vampire!"
"Bro, no. Do I look like I'm dead?" You laughed. "No, actually it's more... you know I like the name Y/P/N more than ...you know Y/N... if it's okay for you?"
"Y/P/N? Sounds... fresh!" Answered Seth
"Fresh?", exclaimed Jared . "What are you? Ten? Oh wait I forgot, you are!"
"Shut up, dumbass!"
"Who do you call a dumbass you greenie!"
The next thing you knew both of them were in a battle, playfully fighting each other. Well more or less "playfully" at least.
You saw Sam shaking his head in disaprovement next to you before he took his arm around Emily's waist. "Well, Y/P/N, seems like there is more pizza left for us. Join us?"
You showed him you biggest grin. Pizza and family and no worries.
"You bet I will!"

The number one thing that never made sense to me, is how the werewolves weren't actually white guys from Forks High?? Cuz the history of werewolves first dates all the way back to ancient Switzerland and Greece, so if anything it's going to be from people of European descent ??? Plus if you have to bring in indigenous lore, why not make it more interesting have wendigo or skinwalkers as the danger?? And just leave the Quileute people the f alone???
I'm not sure if my ask went through, but hopefully it makes sense 🙀 (also side note: maybe its just the lgbtq in me, but I wish that Edward could have just been able to be asexual. Like he could have been written better in SO many ways. Authors obsessing over pairing everyone off erks me so much 😾 )
Okay so first things first, sorry about the delay. I did see your ask, I just went to find a reaction picture (that I didn’t find), then got distracted. That was my bad lol
Tbh I think Stephenie was just more focused on something Native American in general. In the section of the Illustrated Guide with her interview, she talked about how she’s always been ~fascinated~ with Native American culture and beliefs, so I think no matter what, she would have found a way to incorporate that in. When she decided to set her story in Forks, Washington, (because of how rainy it is) just 20 minutes or so away from a reservation... it’s very coincidental. And it’s just... you’re right, she should have just left them alone. Frankly I don’t trust her to write Indigenous characters, period. And tbh, I don’t think she should have just switched over to a wendigo (Algonquian) or a skinwalker (Navajo) or any other creature because she’d probably find some way to screw that up too. It isn’t her place to just incorporate Indigenous lore into her story willy-nilly for her own personal gain, especially if she’ll do it disrespectfully like Twilight.
I think ace!Edward would’ve been great, and I can see how it would have made sense as he wasn’t so keen on sex (though the canon reasons for that were different), so I get what you mean. Twilight would have been sm better if the characters weren’t just cishets and if Meyer didn’t incorporate sm racism into her story.

The rise and fall of the Twilight-Craze
Let me tell you about my first encounter with Twilight - it was a “read”-week in 6th or 7th grade, and I picked up a very new book at the library of my elementary school. So I started reading it. I remember reading the first chapters, but never finishing it. I remember how I found the protagonist to be very whiny, and very disrespectful too.
Also, at this point I also didnt know that this would be a vampire-novel, as the backcover of the book - this being the first danish translation/edition of the novel - never mentioned it.
Anyway, afterwards, I forgot about it pretty quickly.
Flashforward to a year later.
I´m over in Germany, visiting my grandmother, and I buy some books - the german translation of Twilight being among them - and then I start reading it later in the fall. While I did think that the name Stephenie Meyer sounded familiar, I could not remember why. At this point I should also mention that 6th and 7th grade was a very traumatising period for me, and I had by that point pretty much blacked much of that period out of my mind, focusing on the now and future. And yeah, I was 14, so there was still much to come.
Anywway, as I start reading the novel later in the fall, I suddenly remembered that one book I never finished back in 6th or 7th grade - and am kinda amused. Yeah, anyway, I still found Bella Swan to be a very whiny girl, and I actually liked the novel, and honestly did not think that much about it afterwards. Though I did learn not long after that a movie would come out later that year, I - while I was looking forward to it - did not imagine that it would start a big craze, that I later learned from the Wikipedia article of the South Park episode The Ungroundable to be named “The Twilight Craze”.
I enjoyed the movie, actually - I watched it with my best friend (who went on to become the biggest Twilight fan I know, at least for as long as the craze lasted) and it is a memory that I like to think back on. I still think that both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson did a good job in these movies - though more on that later.
So, flash forward to the fall of 2009, where I am in Thailand with my parents. On the way to Thailand - as we went through Germany -  I bought the subsequent books New Moon and Eclipse. I read these books very quickly, and my mom as well.
New Moon - and I´m talking about the novel here - did introduce some rather interesting ideas, such as the Volturi. One thing, however, already stuck me back then - it was the fact that Meyer completely distorted the actual folklore of an actual native american tribe, the Quileutes, for her own way, and it seemed really disrespectful back then already. And as for the Volturi, despite being mentioned early on, we didn´t really get that much from them - though as for the climax of the novel, I was pretty disturbed by the fact that the Volturi let in hundreds of tourists into their palace just to eat them after closing the doors. While that scenario is already pretty much horrifying, what really disturbed me was that Bella - and by extension, Stephenie Meyer herself - immediately forgot about it after it happened and moved on with the plot. That, and another thing - are we really gonna accept it as okay that one from Jacobs tribe physically hurt and mutilated his wifes face after wolfing out, because he feels sorry and he forgave her? It already seemed really wrong back then.
What I also noticed was the fact that Bella Swan essentially only hung out with Jacob so she could play with his feelings, and so she could get into dangerous situations so she could get these hallucinations of Edward. With that said - I also could not really see what was so special about the relationship between Bella and Edward.
Then I read Eclipse - and one thing stuck out to me there: it´s the fact that the mentioned backstories of the individual Cullens - Carlisles past with the Volturi, Rosalie seeking out and killing her rapists, Jaspers backstory from the american civil war (as I later learned from Das Mervins sporkings, she got a lot of stuff wrong there, to put it mildly), or how Alice was abandoned by her family in an asylum and pretended she was dead, where she ultimately got turned - all of these backstories are a hundred times way more interesting than the perks of being Bella Swan and her love life!
Also, I immediately knew that the vampire army was a work of Victoria, and that it was to kill Bella - only upon reading the sporkings by Das Mervin did I learn that it was supposed to be a “twist”.
On the way back from Thailand I bought Breaking Dawn shortly before leaving Germany, but I never finished it - you know why? Because some of my classmembers spilled the tea on the spoiler that Jacob imprints on Bellas daughter. I was just grossed out. I later learned that the book is what turned many fans off Twilight - and the imprinting thing was one of the reasons why, in many cases.
Anyway, then a few weeks after returning from Thailand, I went in to see New Moon with two of my best friends, and it is a memory that I cherish very much.
And that was the time when the Twilight Craze really, really went off - with all the cringeworthy “Are you Team Edward, or Team Jacob?” stuff, and how out of touch with reality some of the fangirls seemed - there were apparently some who really believed that Edward Cullen exists, and so much more. I still didnt think too much about it, as I had other things to look for.
Though - despite liking the movies and the books at the time - I really, really enjoyed a lot of the parodies on the Twilight Craze, like this one from Smosh. The thing is, that Twilight became the probably most parodied thing in the 2009-2010 period. And that may have been one of the things that killed the craze - but more on that later.
Then, in the summer of 2010 - one of the best summers of my life - I was in Miami with my family. And then my best friend and I got to watch Eclipse in a gigantic cinema in a very big mall in Miami Beach - that was unforgettable. And I also remember that I wasnt the only one who laughed over Taylor Lautners overacting. Good to know.
During that same summer, I remember then seeing a new book by Stephenie Meyer in the bookstores - “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner”. As this was before my friend and I saw the movie, I myself did not think that much about it; but I then later realised that Bree was the girl killed by the Volturi at the end of Eclipse, and that the novel - as the title already states - was about her time with the army of newborns. That sounded like an actual interesting plot. Shortly before watching Eclipse, the trailer for “Vampires Suck” came out - and the trailer was very funny, way more funny than the actual movie.
So....Eclipse was a huge hit that summer. But you know what that also was? The end of the Twilight Craze itself. In fact, it can also be compared with another contemporary hit of the 2009-2010 period - Avatar. While that was the biggest hit of the winter of 2009-2010, as soon as spring started, everyone forgot about it. And while Eclipse itself got a lot of mixed reviews, like the preceding movies of the franchise, it simply was the end of the craze itself.
I think here are some of the factors:
Twilight was pretty much EVERYWHERE in the media in 2009-2010, not only from advertisement, product placements, and posters, but also from parodies, not to mention how often Twilight was mentioned in actual news broadcast. In other words, people got tired of it - not just the people who werent even fans of the franchise in the first place, but also more moderate fans, like I considered myself then. And yeah - now thinking back on it, I was also pretty tired of seeing Twilight everywhere even before Eclipse was released in the cinemas.
And another thing is this: The Second Life of Bree Tanner. While the novel was released in early June of 2010, mere weeks before the movie came out, it was very bestselling, because of the Twilight Craze. And the reason why it was released was most likely because even Stephenie Meyer herself had a feeling that the craze soon would end, and had to publish something Twilight-related in advance, so she could be talked about again. Officially, the novella started as a short story to tie in with her illustrated guide for Twilight.
I bought the book later that summer while in Germany - and I found it not very well written, and forgot about it very shortly afterwards. Even my friend found it forgettable. I recently read the sporking of the book on Das Mervin to be reminded of what actually happened - and boy, does it suck! And here is my point - many Twilight fans probably realised with that book that Stephenie Meyer isnt that good a writer. (A lot of people had the same reactions to “The Host” - including me, who never finished the novel because of that)
And then, as soon as the summer of 2010 was over, Twilight was over. People had enough.
I know that the final film was - because of Harry Potter - split in two parts (a decision that was continued when The Hunger Games were made into movies, and a decision that ultimately killed the Divergent franchise), and was released in the winter of 2011 and 2012. I watched both of them - and I was immediately struck by this in 2012: While there of course were trailers and posters for these films, there was simply not the same exposure to the franchise as back in 2009-2010.
And by the time of the release of Breaking Dawn part 2 in the winter of 2012, I had already been redpilled regarding Mary Sues, and had a field day of counting all the Mary Sue points in the movies.
Yeah, Bella Swan is one of the biggest Mary Sues in existence, and was created as a way of Stephenie Meyer wanting to live out an idealised version of her highschool years.
That, and Stephenie Meyer isnt that great a writer - just read the sporking on Das Mervin.
During the reading of the sporkings, I also realised the way how Meyer demonises every blonde - from Lauren to Rosalie, and how Leah Clearwater is demonised for being an independent woman who doesnt bow down to Bella Sue and who actually does something, unlike Bella Sue.
Now, onto the thing with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Both are very good actors, and I think it is sad to see how haunted they were in the past decade of Twilight. Many have accused Stewart of being a bad actress because of Twilight (not to mention that they haven´t seen her brilliant performance in Speak) - I disagree. Kristen Stewart showed what a spoiled, ungrateful and dull Sue Bella is, and Pattinson what a creepy, controllable Stalker Edward is. And I´m now especially happy to see how especially Pattinson is recovering now, as Kristen Stewart did get to prove herself in movies like Camp X-Ray.
Anyway, that was my rant on the Twilight Craze.

58. Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer
Tumblr media
Owned?: Yes Page count: 434 My summary: When Bella Swan has to move to miserable Forks, to her father’s home, she isn’t expecting much. But then she meets a boy - Edward Cullen, beautiful, pale, and mysterious. He seems to hate her, but she is determined to uncover his secrets. But what else will she find? My rating: 2/5 My commentary:
Yep.
So, Twilight! A friend of mine read this recently, and I got second-hand copies to reread it. I, like many people, first read this when I was 12, and loved it, then later hated it. These days, it more confuses me than anything. I maintain that buried in this novel is a half-decent YA novel about a girl and her vampire, but to dredge it out you’d need to search through all of these messed-up power relationships and such. Still, let’s get into it.
Let’s talk about our protagonist. Bella Swan is, mostly, a blank slate. She doesn’t really have hobbies or interests of her own - she reads, but is never really seen reading for pleasure. She is a far more sarcastic protagonist than I remember, thought! My problem with Bella is more people’s reaction to her than anything else. All of the other characters treat her as though she’s perfect, all the named boys in her school crush on her hard, and the girls either want to be her friend or loath her because of the boys crushing on her. Trouble is, there’s nothing really about her that seems to merit this reaction. I get it in the early parts of the book - she’s a stranger in a small town, that’ll attract attention - but the novelty should wear off after a while. She falls into a caretaker role for her father, which is treated very matter-of-factly. I kind of can appreciate it as a reflection of how Bella has learned to take care of herself, and as a flaw on her dad’s part, but the narrative doesn’t give it that kind of weight. Overall, though, Bella didn’t get on my nerves as much as I’d assumed she would. Unlike the movie, she’s actually a little more capable than I gave her credit for - coming up with a plan to get James off her back and sneaking away from Alice and Jasper in the climax, arguing with Edward, and asserting herself more than I thought she did. She was fine, could do with a bit of fleshing out, but mostly okay. What really got my goat was...
Edward. Ah, Edward. How not to write an angsty boy. He’s convinced he’s a hell-bound sinner, and that he’ll drag down anyone who loves him. This manifests as a hot-and-cold reaction to Bella which borders on the abusive. He constantly disrespects her boundaries by trying to ‘protect’ her, which is mostly through stalking her and ignoring what she has to say. Honestly, this kind of character could work if these things weren’t portrayed as being good, or romantic, or for Bella’s own good because she’s just a clumsy girl who can’t take care of herself.
One huge flaw of this novel is the pacing. The book really gave me an appreciation for the movie, which does some of its plot points a lot better. James, the bad vampire, isn’t foreshadowed at all in the book until he shows up, which makes that scene kind of out of the blue and abrupt. Jacob is only mentioned in passing once before he shows up to give some exposition, then vanishes again until the end. The first two thirds build as a relationship drama, then suddenly BAM! Action scenes! It’s jarring, and could have done with another draft or two to work these things seamlessly into the plot.
And then, of course, there’s Meyer’s appropriation of the Quileute people. By which I mean, she attaches her mythology to their name. This gets worse later, so I’m not gonna talk too much about it, but it’s worth mentioning. She could at least have made up a fictional group to give this backstory to, rather than taking a real people and (kind of) twisting them into the bad guys. Ugh.
End of the day, it’s Twilight. What else is there to say that hasn’t already been said, really?

What do you think the series would have been like if Jacob wasn't as interested in Bella as he is in canon? Like, if he doesn't tell her the legends in the first book out of respect for his tribe secrets (even if he doesn't believe them) or if when she brought the bikes to him, he simply fixed them for the money or the chance to have his own bike (I think it was stated that Jacob took longer than he needed fixing the bikes to spend more time with Bella) and he stops hanging out with her after he
phases just like he had to do with Quil and the other non shifter friends he had. I think the Cullens would have still contacted and involved the wolves in the newborn battle and training even if Bella hadn’t been close to them. Perhaps Edward would tell Bella that one of the wolves was Jacob or maybe not because of the treaty (would it affect the treaty if Edward tells Bella that the Quileutes are shifters since she isn’t a Cullen yet?). Breaking Dawn just doesn’t exist in my mindscape. This sounds kind of like the vibe that would have existed had SM gone the Twilight + Forever Dawn route vs Twilight + New Moon + Eclipse + Breaking Dawn. I think I read somewhere that Jacob was very minor in Twilight initially, but an agent or publisher or editor or whoever really liked him in his brief appearance and so SM expanded his role in Twilight a little and he became a main character in the middle two books (making sticking with his original imprinting storyline from FD in BD … uh…  not great). He was just sort of a family friend who had a minor crush on Bella, but they weren’t BFFs and he wasn’t in love with her and wasn’t going to extremes to prevent her from something he believed was a kind of death and thus remained the sweet, sunshiney kid. I wonder if SM would have ever created a Seth if she didn’t change Jacob in that way? I always felt Seth was a reaction to losing sunny, happy Jacob like, she missed that energy and instead of fixing what she did to Jacob, just … made up a new!happy!Jacob and called him Seth. Per SM’s BD FAQ: “the werewolf pack is only sketchily developed. It exists as a whole, but there isn’t much information about the individuals. Most of the wolves do not have names.“I do agree that the wolves would have gotten involved eventually somehow; either with the newborn fight or simply a confrontation once a few more phased after Sam. Without such strong ties to Jacob, would Bella/the Cullens have been more inclined to leave? I’d imagine that they’d broker a deal with the wolves, once/if they found out that their presence was triggering the phasing, that they would leave as soon as Bella finished high school, or maybe only Carlisle (who has a job), Esme and Edward would stay while the others would move on, decreasing their numbers, and leave when Bella was ready. There’s still the tie to Charlie, of course, in even in Breaking Dawn they were planning to move on and Jacob’s imprint is why he tells Charlie so they can stay. Which is another thing changed from Forever Dawn, apparently.  SM doesn’t get into specifics in her FAQ, but she mentions that since Jacob isn’t so close to Bella, he’s not at the birth, and so imprints on Renesmee later when Bella’s visiting Charlie.  Which seems to imply that originally Jacob wasn’t a factor in Charlie being clued in to some degree.  So how did it go down in Forever Dawn, why did she change it, and why in doing so did she basically throw Jacob under the bus in BD by having Bella and Edward all pissed off at him for “putting Charlie in danger” by testing Bella’s control and all that?? Like, apparently there was a scenario where Bella is able to visit Charlie that didn’t involve Jacob at all, or at least couldn’t involve the imprint because it happened while Bella was already visiting Charlie?? But anyway I’d be really curious to have seen a version of the story where Jacob and the wolves were actively looking out for their own interests rather than being wrapped up in Bella’s drama. That they’re not making exceptions for her, and that their tentative alliance with the Cullens to defeat the newborns is more about protecting the people of Forks/La Push than protecting Bella. I think it would have been an interesting dynamic and I’m curious to see how some reluctant friendships might blossom (Emmett and the wolves would like, be such a great bro squad if they could get past the wolf/vamp stuff.  Leah and Rosalie have so much in common, as do Esme and Emily, and Sam and Carlisle to an extent) without the gravitational pull of Bella’s influence on Jacob and thus through him the pack quite so much.
