darcy goes to hell •/ a wip intro

Darcy Brisben is fifteen years old when she helps her brother perform a ritual to find a living version of their deceased elder sister. Of course things go wrong. They always do for her.

Darcy Goes to Hell (working title) is a dark fantasy novel-in-progress centered on the story of Darcy Brisben, a 15-year-old human girl who makes the decision to help her estranged brother open a loophole in search of their late sister. When things go terribly wrong during the ritual, Darcy wakes up in Hell.

Initially set in the world of Erapiae, where Darcy lives with her foster mother in Vallera, but the bulk of it follows her journey through the realms that compose Hell.

Themes: Choices and consequences, self-destruction vs self-acceptance, loss of control, grief, making peace with the way things have been, forging ahead, release of guilt and self-blame, the road to being ready for recovery.

Content warnings: Heavy suicidal ideation, child abuse and neglect, self-harm, death and grief, referenced suicide, unreality, a heavy amount of cognitive distortions, religious themes, literal Hell.

Characters you should know:

• Darcy Brisben (she/her), the central character. 15 years old and human (even if she doesn't feel like one). Distrustful and withdrawn, with outbursts of intense emotion and a scathing view of the world - and of others. Though she holds no attachment to her birth family, she finds herself inexplicably moved by her brother's love for their sister. She doesn't think of the guilt. She never does.

• Moonflower (he/him), Darcy's closest and only friend. An Incubus who left his home realm to search for his dream life in Erapiae. Kind and loving, with a deep sense of empathy that reflects in the way he gives all of himself until he can't give anymore. Of course this applies to Darcy. He recognizes her hurt.

• Alice (she/her), the first person Darcy meets in Hell. A Doppelgänger with her own motives - and a poor understanding of them. Dark-minded and morbid, with a twisted sense of humor and a malicious streak. Though she quickly develops a soft spot for Darcy and assists her in navigating Hell, she never means to get attached.

• Ronan Brisben (he/him), Darcy's estranged elder brother. 20 years old and human. Despite his tough and confident exterior, Ronan is nothing if not the sum of his own fear.

• The Widejaw (it/he), a monster. It knows only death. Hunger. Pain.

Luggage — Hand Is Bad (Amish)

Hand Is Bad by Luggage

Luggage clanks and rumbles, with force but no particular hurry. Its songs, and indeed itself as a band, combines the minimum number of elements for maximum impact. The three piece—that’s all-rounder Michael Vallera (Cleared, COiN, Maar and solo) on guitar, drummer Luca Cimarusti and Michael John Grant on bass—has been honing a corrosive, minimal wallop since the teens. They’ve got it down to essence: the steady throb of bass, the rupturing simplicity of drums, little torrents of guitar dissonance and words half-sung, half-moaned in the background.

The sound is very much like 1990s noise. It has the buzzing, bare-wire intensity of Shellac, but doesn’t run as fast or introduce as much rhythmic complication. There’s something of the Jesus Lizard here, too, though in a self-effacing way with far less frontman drama. You could also draw connections to Luggage’s Chicago contemporaries in FACS. They share a certain punchy, blistering desolation, a carefully deployed violence with lots of negative space in it. 

This is Luggage’s fourth album, according to Discogs, and it’s not radically different from 2019’s Shift, despite all the upheaval that’s come in between. “Hand Is Bad” follows a burly, bass-led riff into blinding firestorms of guitar noise. That’s likely the best part live, the part when the sound just rolls right over you. But it’s not uncontrolled excess. There’s structure and architecture in even the most overdriven intervals. And you can’t get lost. Cimarusti whacks the drums so hard it cuts right through the most extreme obliteration.

“Mirror It” sounds a little brighter, a little more major key. Its sawing, industrial strength riffs work laboriously up the scale, take a look from the top, and plunge back down like Sisyphus. Vallera is singing way down in the mix, something about mirrors and “exactly like it,” but it gets lost in torrents of mid-tempo agitation. You are not going to be humming these tunes in the shower, but you won’t forget them either.

Luggage’s music is heavy and full of distortion, but it also allows for contemplation, even lyricism. Listen, for instance, to how the guitar line goes exploring in “River,” finding a thoughtful path through monumental riffage. Or how the ground-shaking, steel-booted rhythm of “Sunshine through Your Teeth” allows for pensive, even introspective, leads. There’s a sensitive soul at the center of this massive machine, and whether it’s driving or trapped there is hard to tell.

Wynni Stelle Venus (she/her). Human. 23 years old. Born and raised in Deniata, Solace. Currently living in Marilo, Vallera, where she shares a cottage with her haunted doll companions and her roommate, Aiko Hibiki.

Wynni was born with the Gift of minemne and has learned to utilize it under the guiding hand of her mentor, Sanja Ikh - who she now works for at the Ikh Memory Archives.

Though an observer most days, and more on the quiet, unassuming side, Wynni has a fire inside that may catch others off-guard. A naturally curious and inquisitive person, she bursts into life when faced with any question that she has no answer for, conducting an avid search until she finds clarity. But she could find no answers for her mother's murder, and it haunts her.

In appearance, Wynni stands at 5 feet and 6 inches tall. She has fair white skin and brown eyes. Her straight hair, currently dyed a vibrant blue, reaches just past her shoulders; she prefers to wear it loose.

Vigevano, 16° edizione di “Scarpadoro”: domenica 26 marzo si corre!    Domenica 26 marzo Vigevano si sveglierà con un’ora di anticipo - entra in vigore l’ora legale - e sarà allegramente ‘invasa’ dal colorato popolo dei 2.000 runners e appassionati della corsa, che daranno vita alle 16^ Scarpadoro, evento figlio della Scarpa d’Oro Internazionale lanciata da Sebastian Coe il 7 aprile 1980. Questa manifestazione, per la sua storicità e per il numero di realtà e associazioni coinvolte, rappresenta un vero e proprio patrimonio della città. Organizzata da Atletica Vigevano e dal Comune di Vigevano, la Scarpadoro si articolerà anche quest’anno su tre distanze: la Half Marathon, mezza maratona competitiva Fidal di carattere nazionale (Bronze Label) e campionato provinciale giunta alla 16^ edizione, la StraVigevano, gara non competitiva ma cronometrata di 10,2K, e la Stracittadina non competitiva di 5K, alla quale sarà abbinata anche la ’4 Zampe’, dove a correre saranno i cagnolini e il cui ricavato verrà devoluto all’A.D.A.I., l’associazione che ha in gestione il Canile di Vigevano. La gara è stata presentata questa mattina nella Sala Giunta del Comune di Vigevano alla presenza del Sindaco Andrea Ceffa e dell’assessore allo sport Nunzia Alessandrino, dalla Senatrice ex atleta paralimpica Giusy Versace, del presidente del Parco del Ticino Erika Vallera, del consigliere nazionale Fidal Oscar Campari, dal presidente provinciale Fidal Claudio Baschiera, dal presidente di Atletica Vigevano Gianni Merlo e dall’organizzatrice dell’evento Manuela Merlo.  “La Scarpadoro è Vigevano, è una manifestazione che entrata profondamente nel cuore della nostra città ed è il frutto di un percorso durato anni, che l’ha vista trasformarsi a seconda dei tempi e delle esigenze, ed è una competizione che ha sempre saputo trasformarsi e crescere” – ha esordito il sindaco Andrea Ceffa.  “La Scarpadoro, assieme agli altri eventi che Atletica Vigevano organizza in città, sta contribuendo ad un importante processo di crescita culturale, arricchimento e inclusione sociale. Soffientini e Mandelli, tra l'altro, lunedì sera 20 marzo alle ore 21 saranno protagonisti di una diretta Instagram sul canale @Scarpadorovigevano. In campo femminile ci sarà la vigevanese d’adozione Karin Angotti che si è imposta nel 2016, 2018 e 2019. Correrà la mezza maratona anche l’atleta ucraino Dmitry Zverev. SCARPADORO ABILITY E INIZIATIVE SOLIDALI Da quest’anno tornerà inoltre anche la Scarpadoro Ability, la corsa non competitiva di 5K riservata a persone con disabilità che, grazie alla presenza dell’atleta paralimpica, scrittrice e oggi Senatrice della Repubblica Giusy Versace e dei colorati Super Eroi del gruppo Escape Team, regalerà a tanti ragazzi ‘speciali’ una giornata di sport, socialità e divertimento. Hanno aderito quest’anno all’iniziativa diverse associazioni locali come: Aias, Anffas, Anmil, Assoc. Aldo Pollini che ha coinvolto l’Oftal di Voghera, il Cerchio, la Fondazione Maddalena Grassi, e Ricominciare a Volare. Per il secondo anno, torna anche l’associazione Ultra DI di Lurate Caccivio (CO). Ogni atleta potrà scegliere liberamente di donare all’atto dell’iscrizione e ogni singola donazione effettuata verrà raddoppiata da un generoso sostenitore che ha deciso di sposare questa nobile causa, duplicando il valore di ogni euro versato.   LA PARTENZA La partenza è prevista per tutti alle ore 9.30 dallo Stadio Comunale Dante Merlo. Un unico e coloratissimo serpentone si riverserà, di corsa o camminando, nelle vie del centro storico cittadino. Tutti i partecipanti, infatti, percorreranno assieme i primi 5 km del tracciato che attraversa Piazza Ducale e il Castello Sforzesco, per poi fare ritorno allo stadio (le 5K) oppure proseguire in aperta campagna ed attraverso i viali verdi e corsi all’interno del Parco del Ticino (10K e Half Marathon). Il riso, del territorio e di altissima qualità, è offerto anche quest’anno da Tenuta Drovanti.   LA GRANDE FAMIGLIA SCARPADORO La Scarpadoro è organizzata da Atletica Vigevano in collaborazione con il Comune di Vigevano e patrocinata da Parco del Ticino, Coni Pavia, Fidal e Pool Vigevano Sport.   200 VOLONTARI Sotto il coordinamento della Polizia Locale, anche quest’anno saranno impiegati sul percorso oltre 200 volontari che, oltre a salvaguardare la chiusura delle strade e il passaggio degli atleti, organizzeranno i 3 punti di ristoro. I volontari del gruppo sportivo Garlaschese presidieranno le strade vicine allo Stadio Comunale Dante Merlo e le vie del centro storico, il gruppo Escape Team e l’associazione Sorrisi con il Cuore gestiranno i tre punti di ristoro sul percorso e presidieranno alcune vie del centro. Il gruppo comunale della Protezione Civile di Vigevano sarà impiegato nei punti più trafficati come la nuova tangenziale del IV Lotto, viale Montegrappa e corso Ugo La Malfa, coadiuvati da alcuni membri della Croce di Malta. Non mancherà il preziosissimo contributo dei Volontari del Parco del Ticino e degli Alpini, impegnati sul percorso, mentre la gestione di tutti i servizi pre e post gara sarà gestita dall’Atletica Vigevano. Il servizio di primo soccorso sarà gestito della Croce Rossa, in collaborazione con la Croce Verde. Sul tracciato, infine, un gruppo di ciclisti sarà impegnato sul percorso per scortare il gruppo di testa, gli inseguitori e il gruppo degli ultimi.  Collabora anche quest’anno l’Istituto Cairoli di Vigevano, con la Radio B Cairoli e con due classi del programma Security Club Cairoli Vigevano (SCCV).   Correranno al fianco della quattordicesima edizione importanti aziende del territorio come: Autotorino, BCC Carate Brianza, Asm Energia Spa Gruppo A2a, Dow Italia, Leonardo Costruzioni (main sponsor di Atletica Vigevano). Back in the ring to take another swing

Cleared (Steven Hess and Michael Vallera) entrusted me with writing about their excellent, forthcoming album on the amazing Touch label:

Cleared is the longstanding project of Steven Hess and Michael Vallera, based in Chicago, Illinois. The six tracks complete the longest release to date by the duo, who were resolute in utilizing the maximum time available on the compact disc format. Cleared has produced a series of critically recognized recordings since its self-titled debut in 2011. Working with the Touch label on The Key (recorded in spring 2019, released in October 2020) was a leap forward, prompting remixed tracks by Philp Jeck, Fennesz, Bethan Kellough, and Olivia Block. Of Endless Light is noctambulant, a walk through formal sonic spaces and colors beginning with the cascading, bell-like tones of the opening track, "First Sleep." The husks of a city's industrial past are summoned: warehouses hollowed out for condominiums, dust-covered factory floors, a distant grind of machining, clouds of metallic particles, and the persistent background hum of traffic. These remnants contrast with hints of the sterile present of a city no less cruel than its industrial past. "Dawn" opens with a grey drone and scattered electronic rhythms as wiring, and extended guitar lines suggest the opening of another cycle of the day into evening. "Pulse" offers a hypnotic pattern that suggests the movement of people through the city's core, slowly overlain with cymbals evoking the shimmer of sunlight cleaving off the windows of distant buildings. The album appropriately concludes with "Walking Field," methodically moving forward via a cloud of meditative clicks and looping melodies. Of Endless Light is a patient listen, distilled into a sonic environment specific to Hess and Vallera's lens. Cleared created its crepuscular moods using the core methodology of their previous records while expanding their music's range, artistry, and subtlety. Deploying careful instrumentation, sampling, and mixing to experiment with tone and atmosphere, Of Endless Light breathes and drifts through layers of sound that veil, reveal, and intrigue. The result gives a listener much to discover, examine, experience, and consider - as well as the incentive to return again and again. [Bruce Adams, 2022]

a victorian-adjacent royal murder mystery. it’s five years after vallera’s civil war, and tensions are still running high. when the queen suddenly dies, her oldest daughter believes there was more to it than simply illness.

caterina algren ; the main character, eighteen years old. goes by erin. she grew up second in line for the crown, and perfectly content with that. now she's grappling with the heavy weight of it on her head.

erin's family ; cornelia, twelve years old, goes by cora. and hugo, eight years old, simply hugo. erin's younger siblings who struggle with the shifting dynamic and what it means for their relationship with erin. the last algren sibling is zacharias, the oldest brother who died in the war and left erin in his footsteps.

theodore evander ; erin's betrothed, seventeen years old. goes by theo or theodore. his father fought against the royal family in the civil war and led the siege that killed zacharias. part of the peace agreement was a marriage between theodore and erin.

The most opportune moment is for naught if you can’t grab it when it comes along. To make All Perfect Days, Michael Vallera struck a balance between preparedness and spontaneity. The Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and visual artist’s previous solo albums sound fairly worked over, which each instrument evidencing post-recording interventions. This time he worked on the music for a good six months in advance, but actually recorded it at Chicago’s Electrical Audio Studio fairly quickly and limited the post-studio work to assembly, not processing.

The result is more immediate than his other recordings under his own name (Vallera also records with Maar, Cleared and Luggage).  The title track opens like a snapshot of a Phill Niblock composition, with a thick wall of sound that contains a swirl of activity behind a flat, unmoving surface. But because Mike is Mike, not Phill, the music takes another direction. An elegiac keyboard melody courses through the wall of sound, ending each phrase with a pedal point that both punctuates and fades into the big grind. “In Midafternoon” follows with a leisurely, resonant electric guitar melody that seems to be doing its best to evade the occasionally synth voices that loom in its path.  

These two tracks establish the album’s palette of looming surfaces, boldly unclothed tunes, and quietly subversive counter-melodies. One thing that’s missing from his earlier work is clearly stated, and its absence gives these tracks a tableaux-like quality that is at odds with the energy expressed by the elements that remain. It’s at this point that Vallera’s work as a photographer comes into play. The best photography can imply movement and action with static elements; All Perfect Days is likewise charged with kinetic potential even when it seems to be going nowhere.
