28th Annual Grammy Awards On This Day

The 28th Annual Grammy Awards were held on February 25, 1986, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. They recognized the accomplishments of musicians from the previous year, 1985. The night's main winner was USA For Africa's "We Are The World" which won four trophies, including Song of the Year, which went to Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. It was the first time in their careers that they had received the Song of the Year Award. Richie was making his sixth effort in eight years. The song's producer, Quincy Jones, got the other three prizes (including Record of the Year) for the latter single.

How The Lorax Makes Real-World Problems and Themes Digestible for Children

Through a compelling storyline and distinct characters, The Lorax sheds light on societal issues in a palatable way for children to comprehend.

 Dr. Suess creates lovable and hateful characters and an innovative storyline to show how The Lorax is a great movie to educate children on environmental issues.

One of the main characters, the Lorax, is shown to “speak for the trees” and acts as a caring creature who loves the environment (Suess, The Lorax). The Lorax is bright orange and fluffy with bushy eyebrows and a thick mustache that portrays a grandfatherly figure. Children are drawn to the Lorax because of his interesting look, but also because he provides constant warnings to the Once-ler about protecting the environment and saving the Truffula trees.

In contrast, the Once-ler is an evil character who makes all of the animals sad by destroying and polluting their home (Suess, The Lorax).

Although children might not understand every aspect of environmental degradation, they will build a moral compass on what is right and wrong while wanting to protect the environment through different characters.

In a 50th Anniversary Retrospective article, Elizabeth Blum wrote, “Far beyond a simple conservationist message, Geisel places the origins of environmental problems in westward expansion and resource overuse; he blames capitalism, advertising, and technological developments for destroying ecosystems and depleting forests; he gives nature agency and a voice through the Lorax himself; and, importantly, he locates the solution in children, centering them as agents empowered to make wide-ranging societal changes (Blum 790).”

Dr. Suess believes that children will learn from this movie and advocate for the environment in the future, aiming each message toward the importance of protecting the Earth.

 In a variety of ways, The Lorax educates children on environmental issues in a digestible way that is easy to grasp.
