the water motif in s1

i know watergate is a thing we talk about regularly but going through s1 again it's crazy how consistent that theme of water = uh oh, is

there's quite a few posts about it but i just want to go over all of the moments just in s1 alone again (i'll probably do individual posts for the later seasons when i get to them, but i think s1 is generally the most egregious season with it anyways)

instances and images under the cut because i'm serious there's an obscene amount of times this motif comes up

the shot of the lab worker getting dragged up the elevator and killed in the opener of the show gets intercepted by the Wheeler's sprinkler system as we hardcut to Mike's campaign

2. Hopper showers right before taking smoking, taking pills, And drinking simultaneously (also moments before he gets the news of Will's disappearance)

3. Benny washes dishes Right before the lab workers show up and he is killed (sc is of where you can read the captions describing the action instead of a few seconds later where you can see him do so we have some caps in some of these images lmao)

4. it starts lightly raining when the party get to "Mirkwood" where Will dissappeared and then full on starts pouring right before they find El and get dragged into the UD mess

5. after hooking up with a random woman again Hopper stands outside his trailer looking out at the lake while there's constant water sloshing noises in the bg of the dialogue (not subtitled), meanwhile he rejects the woman's advances and talks about feeling cursed (trauma moment poor guy)

6. infamously, Steve's pool, as Barb dies (she also literally dies IN the pool here, oh girl :c)

7. obviously Will's "body" being found in the quarry

8. after Hopper breaks into the lab and gets drugged. he wakes up in his now bugged home and runs outside first thing, where we get another great shot of the lake next to his house, again with the water sounds too

9. Lonnie showers at the Byers' while Joyce finds the papers in his bag confirming he just came back for monetary gain

10. El's constant traumatic flashbacks of the lab where we get to see "the bath", not including Every shot here because it happens more than once

11. now Nancy takes a shower while having flashbacks to her encounter with the Demogorgon that almost killed her

12. El looks at her reflection in the water while she's hiding out in the forest and breaks down/freaks out screaming at her reflection and disturbing the water

13. Mike at the quarry right before he almost dies if it weren't for El's interference (i haven't included the shot of Hopper standing at the quarry talking about how a fall in would be deadly since it's before Will's body is found there and Mike almost dies in there for real, since it would take up even more space here and is already on theme with setting tragedy up)

14. when the party all catches each other up to date Hopper tells everyone that the gate to the UD in the lab is "near a large watertank"

15. El washes her face, feeling bad for not being able to find Will or Barb, and seconds before deciding to ignore her fear and face the void again by setting up a new "bath" for her to use her powers

16. said "bath" itself, obviously, which already causes her great distress but is also from where she sees Barb's dead body

17. Will using the bathroom sink right after coughing up the UD creature and right before he has an actual flash to the UD itself

18. also every instance of El visiting the void, which exclusively consists of the water floor (during which she's not only scared each time but also mainly consists of moments like finding the Demogorgon or a dead Barb)

19. also the fact that anyone in the UD is extremely wet, which we see anytime we get shots of Will or Barb there

like. the amount of times this happens it crazy. i also didn't leave out any water moments and just cherry picked the "bad" ones. this is literally all of them. (fyi, i don't have one establishing lake-shot of Hopper's cabin in here because there's already so many images, but Hopper's cabin is associated with water in general every time were there. something bad also happens every time we're there so i guess it evens out)

also fun detail, i wouldn't include it in the actual list but i just think it's too funny to not mention at all: when the kids hide out in the bus at the car junk yard (the same the kids also hide in with Steve during s2) Brenner's men show up. and when one of them turns to finally check out the bus the camera turns and suddenly there's no cars on screen anymore and just Boats

which is Really funny tbh. i wouldn't count it as an actual watergate moment, but this is also the closest they could get to hint at their water motif without having the guy chug water while hunting kids or having another spontaneous rainstorm start

i just want to know where they're going with their overall water theme SOOO bad, it's been so prominent since s1, it clearly seems to be associated with bad things happening. but also the fact that there are no bodies of water in the UD (while everything is still wet and or gooey??)

Will, the Forever Clock and Cerebro

The writers used Dustin’s inventions to tell us A LOT about Will and his powers. 

The Forever Clock, very useful in the apocalypse is probably about time powers, timelines and time loop... Maybe only Vecna has time powers, we don’t know, but it’s not a coincidence that in S3 Dustin gives the Forever Clock to Will, and that the name Williams is engraved on the grandfather clock.

But let’s talk about Cerebro! 

Cerebro, an unassembled, one-of-a-kind battery powered radio tower

Will: So it’s like a HAM radio.

Dustin: The Cadillac of HAM radios. This baby carries a crystal clear connection over vast distances. I’m talking North Pole to South.

Note: Dustin uses Cerebro to communicate with Suzie, who lives in Salt Lake City. Water and salt. Two things that are constantly mentioned on the show. @will80sbyers made a masterpost about it )

Why is Cerebro connected to Will?

1.  One-of-a-kind It’s also the title of the book behind Will in Lenora. That could mean that his powers or his very existence are important.

2.  Battery.  Will has always been associated with lights, and in S4 Nancy even says that ‘When Will was in the Upside Down lights came to life’.

So it is possible that his powers give the UD and the hive-mind energy, and Vecna needs them to build a new world. 

3.  Battery powered radio tower 

The number twelve represents Will since S1. When Hopper talks with Joyce after looking for Will, she says: Six hours. It’s been six hours! And when she’s at the lab with Brenner, he says:Six. Six people (have disappeared) And there are many other examples

And what does Twelve do in the Rainbow Room? He builds a red tower.

So it really seems that Will can build. Creation powers? The shed scene is the first time they mention that, when Jonathan tells him that they built Castle Byers just the way Will drew it (and Vecna/Mind Flayer is also there, listening)

Or maybe, like a battery, Will can give the UD the energy to grow and spread.

In S3 the Flayed had to eat fertilizers for the Mind Flayer to build its body. Maybe Will’s powers/energy are like “fertilizers” too, but for the whole Upside Down. 

He’s like the water that plants need to grow.

I’m still analyzing the many Billy-Will parallels but it’s in this season that the writers started to show AND tell what Vecna wants from Will. 

Vecna/Mind Flayer tells someone named William, in a scene that has many parallels with Will’s vanishing, that he wants him to build.

In the Rainbow Roow Twelve builds a red tower, and there’s a red buiding on the poster in Will’s room. 

It’s also note worthing that some of Michael Maher JR’s concept arts for Vecna’s Mind Lair looked like a tower.

So maybe the red tower and the rose glass of Creel House are a reference to Stephen King’s Rose Red and The Dark Tower series (always love to mention SK! @lilitblaukatz​  )

It’s also interesting that Will has the poster of The Cure. Owens said that he thinks El is the cure, but she lost. It’s like the game in 4x01. They were losing with an 11, but won with a 20. 

I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that the dnd game and the game at school were won by the Sinclairs. Brother and sister. Only together Will and El can win. Only together they can fix it.

Ok, they focus on Will’s skates, but let’s not forget Mike

More about Cerebro, X-Men and The Lord of the Rings

Dustin’s radio tower is called after the device Professor X uses to locate other mutants and humans in The X-Men. Reminds me of the hive-mind.

And the kids assemble it on Weathertop, a reference to The Lord of the Rings. The ancient watch-tower where Frodo gets stabbed by a Nazgul with a Morgul-knife. That weapon remains in the wound of the victim and turns them into a wraith under the rule of Sauron. Hmm, sounds familiar.

Weathertop = Will’s possession and connection to the UD and Vecna.

Will and Max

Before S4 we couldn’t know that Vecna would target Max, but the two Venkmans in S2, was foreshadowing of this Lumax and Byler parallel. Venkman’s love interest, Dana, is possessed by a creature similar to a demodog. Will gets possessed in S2 and is still haunted by Vecna/UD, and Max was targeted in S4.

In 3x01, more foreshadowing of Will and Max being connected to Vecna while they’re assembling Cerebro. And if “Will is Cerebro”, it is possible that he will try to communicate with Max.

But this could be very dangerous for him. I read a very interesting theory, by @freetobeeyouandme​ about the episode of My Little Pony Dustin and Erica talk about in S3 and that could be foreshadowing of Max and Will’s storyline in S5.

truman show esque "trapped in a reality you think is The reality when it is, in fact, just an experiment in which you are the subject" situation except when Steve gets dragged through the gate at Lover's Lake, when the rest of them follow him into the Upside Down, it's like the place has been adapting since the last time any of their people were here.

The Upside Down made itself into a mirror of Hawkins for a boy who it wanted to keep, but it didn't do so great the first time around. Vines and thick air and cold, it may have memorized the map of the place it was emulating, but it never quite got the details right.

The thing is, it's had time to learn. It was in Will's head, for fuck's sake, took over the bodies of countless Hawkins residents during the Starcourt fiasco of '85, so by the time Spring Break of '86 rolls around, the Upside Down knows.

It's a living thing and it knows better how to be a mirror, how to maybe better keep that boy here next time it gets ahold of him. Only before Will Byers has the chance to stumble his way back through one of the gates being created just for him, just for him and his sister, there are four others who are maybe a good trial run.

It's confusing for them, on the other side of being dragged to the bottom of a lake. It's confusing because it actually looks like Hawkins, smells like it, the water is the same in the lake and the mud feels the same on the shore.

It's less like being dragged to the bottom at all, actually, because the water makes them weightless, makes the transition disorienting rather than a clear crossing between worlds, so when they resurface and it looks the same it's. It's not the Upside Down the way Steve saw it in the tunnels, it's not the Upside Down the way Will or Joyce or Hopper or El described it.

Maybe there are hints and clues out and about-- unnatural chill for the season and tree roots that kick up out of the earth a bit more frequently, a haze to both nighttime and daylight that makes it feel gray and-- artificial almost? But none of that is enough to combat the sense of disorientation, the knowledge in their heads of what the UD actually looks like, and there's this fog in their heads...

Their people aren't on the shore waiting for them under that starless night sky, but that's actually-- were there people waiting here for them at all?

It was just the four of them, right? It was just--

There are people here, when they decide to, um, "how did you hurt yourself, Steve? We need to-- shit, that needs to be disinfected, like, yesterday."

Robin's worried about rabies but Steve reminds her, "that's an animals thing, I just, like, fell on, uh-- those rocks at the lake? When we were swimming?"

It's too hard to question why they all went swimming in their clothes when it's this cold and dark. The fog is-- it's thick but also untraceable, it's like trying to make a logical decision in the middle of the most absurd of dreams.

It's like darkness encroaching in on your vision when you're involuntarily losing consciousness...

There are people here, when they decide to go find a first aid kit at Nancy's place because it's closest. There are a handful of cars driving around town, Mrs. Brady putting out her trash down the street when they sneak past.

There was something, some reason, why they were at the lake and that's important. That has to be important, somewhere beyond the fog.

When they fall asleep in the light of a too-quick morning, like the sun turned on rather than rose, it's not weird that there's no one else in the Wheeler house.

"Stop looking at me, I can feel you," Robin mutters as she dozes off to sleep on the bed beside Nancy, the boys on a spare mattress on the floor.

AJDJDJDGG OKAY SO. this is SO fucking good but ive been putting it off for so long bc i wanted to draw something to go with it but i’ve just. never figured out what so inevitably i’m just gonna answer it on its own

this subject in particular is SO FUNNY for me to think about bc i think the kids’ reactions depend a lot on how their parents talk abt it and both of them handle it in COMPLETELY different ways. like uknighted dream is pretty open abt it (obviously they give the incredibly watered down kid-safe version) and they kinda use it as a learning experience? like in very vague terms.

rapunzel: <:) well yknow how if you shake a bottle of soda, when you open it it explodes everywhere?? well sometimes when we bottle up our feelings and don’t do anything with them or talk to someone we trust, they end up getting all shaken up in there, and eventually theyll explode! mama cass and i used to have a lot of trouble talking about our feelings, and because of all those emotions that got bottled up and shaken around in there, we found it hard to properly communicate with each other at all. but then we realized how much we really cared about each other and how we really wanted to make things work, so we learned to be more honest about how we felt and how to communicate with one another without everything just ‘exploding’, so to speak. and thats why we always teach you how to manage your big emotions, does that make sense? :)

on the other hand VARIAN? literally could not care less. at least not with the ud kids. he still has one of his wanted posters that hugo grabbed as a “souvenir” on their trip, and the automaton he used to fight rapunzel? its still in the corner of his lab and he pulls it apart regularly for scrap metal.

when emery comes along though varian is like “okay we are Never addressing this again” bc em thinks varian is SO cool and varian actually cares So much about his newfound image. (very stupid of him for that to be his main priority obviously bc emery is like 4 and if she knew what he did she would probably just be like “okay. can i have apple juice”)

anyways yeah ilmari and the twins don’t really tell her anything either because they don’t really see it as anything worth telling her about, especially in comparison to way more important things like the fact that lance will sometimes sneak you dessert before dinner if you can convince eugene he has a gray hair without him catching on. so obviously emery grows up fairly unaware of anything varian has done but the defining factor is that shes constantly hearing about it out of context and is just left to struggle with that enigma.

like you know the experience of being like 14 years old at the family thanksgiving and you get to sit at the grown ups table for the first time and hear about all their weird beef and inside jokes and also hear your aunt mention out of context that hey your dad went to prison once bc that’s LITERALLY what the tangled kids experience in relation to their parents’ pasts. like the twins forgot about most of what varian told them by the time they grew up, they knew the watered down version of what happened with cass but they never knew the little details right. so they’ll just be hanging out playing checkers together while the adults are sitting across the room chatting over drinks and varian jokes “oh man its just like that one time cass kidnapped me” and all the kids immediately whip their heads around like “WHAT?”

this is ESPECIALLY true with emery who’s parents are notorious for having more insults for each other than pet names. em could just be reading by the fireplace late one night and var and hugo come out for a midnight snack and just start talking like

hugo: sometimes i think maybe objectively we should be evil again. like just for fun

varian: honestly. i took over the kingdom once i could do it again no problem

hugo: you’re probably actually strong enough to do it yourself now 🥺

varian: you want to kiss me so bad it makes you look stupid

emery: ….right so are we just gonna brush over the “again” part or did you guys forget i was here

varian also eventually realizes that by doing this he is replicating EXACTLY how quirin used to be secretive of his own past and how like one day varian just suddenly had to grapple with the knowledge that his dad who baked pies and fed the apple peels to his raccoon probably had a kill count. and obviously varian is absolutely distraught over this revelation

“HUGO HELP ME. I think im becoming my dad” “oh. well hey it happens to all of us it could be worse. besides your dad is hot so like i see it as a win win” “What” “what?”

i should probably also mention that ilmari knew about cass’s villain arc long before they even MET and ilmari actively tries to use this against her when they’re like 13. like “yeah well you cant tell ME what to do i’m gonna tell alina and ryder you tried to stab mom when you were in your 20s” (it doesn’t work btw)

Next day she calls Steve and tells him that she couldn't find Billy but it is very very possible, Billy's trapped in the upside down. Has been trapped there for months. How he manages to survive there, god only knows.

Steve wants to go to the other dimension. But how? He needs a portal.

El goes on the search again. Turns out, there is a small gate between the worlds. It's where the ruins of Starcourt are.

Steve goes to the abandoned mall. It's half demolished and it's creepy and it brings all the terrifying memories back.

He drives there in the camaro and talks to it on the way. Tells it everything, although he has a feeling the car knows at least half of it.

Leaves it near the ghost of a building. He has his bat with, his bandana and goggles. His lighter and a can of gasoline, just in case.

Oh, and a bottle of water and some sandwiches he's made while planning the whole thing.

He didn't plan shit. He even didn't tell any of the kids. Only El knows, and she's so far away she won't be able to come to the rescue, if the upside down trip goes sideways.

The camaro stands still and watches Steve disappear through the wall. The portal wasn't easy to find in all the debris, but it's there. Steve slips through the slime and finds himself on the dark side of Hawkins.

Billy could be in several places actually. The Upside down, a government secret lab getting experimented on, or just a government secret hospital, unconscious/conscious and healing. A Russian prison is a possibility, but an unlikely one, he wasn't down there in the Russian base, so how could Russians pick up his body from above especially if they were in a hurry to get away

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Surah Al-Hijr Ayah 21-25

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

15:21 And there is not a thing, but the supplies for it are with Us, and We do not send it down but in a known measure.

15:22 And We send the winds fertilizing, then We cause the water to descend from the sky, and We give it to you to drink, and it is not you who are the owners of its supply.

15:23 And certainly We! It is We Who give life, and cause death, and We are the Inheritors.

15:24 And indeed, We know the first generations of you who have passed away, and indeed, We know the present generations of you (mankind), and also those who will come afterwards.

15:25 And verily, your Lord will gather them together. Truly, He is Most Wise, (and) Knowing.

The Supplies for All Things are with Allah

Allah says:

And there is not a thing, but the supplies for it are with Us,

Allah tells us that He is the Owner of all things, and that everything is easy for Him. He has the supplies for all things with Him.

and We do not send it down but in a known measure.

meaning, as He wills and as He wants. Doing so out of His great wisdom and mercy towards His servants, in a way that He is under no obligation to do. But He has decreed mercy for Himself.

Yazid bin Abi Ziyad reported from Abu Juhayfah that Abdullah said:

"No year has more rain than another, but Allah divides the rain between them as He wills, it rains: here a year and there a year. Then he recited,

And there is not a thing but the supplies for it are with Us...).

Benefits of the Winds

Allah says:

And We send the winds fertilizing.

i.e., fertilizing the clouds so that they give rain, and fertilizing the trees so that they open their leaves and blossoms.

These winds are mentioned here in the plural form because they give results, unlike the barren wind (Ar-Rih Al-'Aqim, see Adh-Dhariyat 51:41), which is mentioned in the singular and described as barren since it does not produce anything; because results can only be produced when there are two or more things.

Abdullah bin Mas`ud said,

"The wind is sent bearing water from the sky, then it fertilizes the clouds until rain begins to generously fall, just as the milk of the pregnant camel flows generously.''

This was also the opinion of Ibn Abbas, Ibrahim An-Nakha`i and Qatadah.

Ad-Dahhak said:

"Allah sends it to the clouds and it gets fertilized and becomes full of water.''

Ubayd bin Umayr Al-Laythi said:

"Allah sends the wind which stirs up the earth, then Allah sends the wind which raises clouds, then Allah sends the wind which forms clouds, then Allah sends the fertilizing wind which pollinates the trees."

Then he recited, (And We sent the winds fertilizing).

Fresh Water is a Blessing from Allah

Allah says:

then We cause the water to descend from the sky,

and We give it to you to drink,

This means, "and We send it down to you fresh and sweet, so that you can drink it; if We had wished, We could have made it salty (and undrinkable)'', as Allah points out in another Ayah in Surah Al-Waqi`ah, where He says:

Tell Me! The water that you drink, is it you who cause it to come down from the rain clouds, or are We the cause of it coming down! If We willed, We verily could make it salty (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)! )56:68-70(

And Allah says:

He it is Who sends water down from the sky; from it you drink and from it (grows) the vegetation on which you send your cattle to pasture. (16:10)

and it is not you who are the owners of its supply.

The meaning is, "You are not taking care of it; rather We send it down and take care of it for you, making springs and wells flourish on the earth.''

If Allah so willed, He could make it disappear, but by His mercy He sends it down and makes it fresh and sweet, maintaining the springs, wells, rivers and so on, so that they may drink from it all year long, water their livestock and irrigate their crops.

The Power of Allah to initiate and renew Creation

Allah says:

And certainly We! We it is Who give life, and cause death,

Here Allah tells us of His power to initiate creation and renew it. He is the One Who brings life to creatures out of nothingness, then He causes them to die, then He will resurrect all of them on the Day when He will gather them together.

and We are the Inheritors.

He also tells us that He will inherit the earth and everyone on it, and then it is to Him that they will return.

Then He tells us about His perfect knowledge of them, the first and the last of them.

He says:

And indeed, We know the first generations of you who had passed away....

Ibn Abbas said,

"The first generations are all those who have passed away since the time of Adam. The present generations and those who will come afterward refer to those who are alive now and who are yet to come, until the Day of Resurrection.''

Something similar was narrated from Ikrimah, Mujahid, Ad-Dahhak, Qatadah, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Ash-Sha`bi and others.

Ibn Jarir reported from Muhammad bin Abi Ma`shar, from his father, that;

he heard Awn bin Abdullah discussing the following Ayah with Muhammad bin Ka`b:

And indeed, We know the first generations of you who had passed away, and indeed, We know the present generations of you (mankind), and also those who will come afterwards,

and it was stated that it refers to the rows for prayer.

Muhammad bin Ka`b said, "This is not the case. (And indeed, We know the first generations of you who had passed away),

it refers to those who are dead or have been killed,

and;

and also those who will come(afterwards),

meaning those who have yet to be created.

And verily your Lord will gather them together. Truly, He is Most Wise, (and) Knowing).''

Awn bin Abdullah said,

"May Allah help you and reward you with good.''

Gates, portals, birth and rebirth

Aka: Yes, Will and El are twins from birth (also I'm pretty sure Vecna cherry-picked our cast from different timelines)

Ever since I saw El's vision of her birth I've been having trouble with it and I couldn't figure it out for the life of me until I saw this image again:

I have to be a bit vulgar but my first thought was that it looked a whole lot like a vagina. Which made me think about how we have in the first and second season three people enter and exit the UD and the whole thing about birth/rebirth

So I was bugged by this idea until it started to fall into place.

So firstly I have to establish something

Portals: they are opened from the UD by Demogorgons and they are closing up just fine, not leving behind cracks =natural birth

Gates: they are opened from the RSU by humans and if they close up they leave behind cracks but if they don't they can spread and fester =c section

That's when I stopped because if I'm correct than El's rebirth or escape from the UD is fishy.

According to everything we know she was born with an emergency c section do to complications around her birth, so why did she exit the UD through a portal and not a gate? You can argue that than portals are equalling c sections, but portals are created from inside of the UD or womb, by something that is part of it. Portals are natural, gates aren't.

If gates were natural they wouldn't leave behind cracks or scarring, but they do and they are created by an outside force instead an inside.

But I have more proof.

Nancy Wheeler

I know this one come out of nowhere but we actually see our first birth/rebirth thanks to our girl. In her case it's more metaphorical and it's ends when she is back in the RSU and I also believe that is it here more, to show how a natural birth/rebirth should look like in contrast with the other two.

So Nancy Wheeler decided to climb into the tree portal left by a demogorgon, she wanders in, spends a little time there than she sees the demogorgon, she is the first one to move, she indicates the escape as she is frightened by the beast, that's when the demogorgon sees her and starts chasing her until she gets to the portal, she yells for Jonathan who is waiting for her on the other side and helps her out of the UD into the RSU and the portal closes.

If we traslate it into the birth/rebirth metaphor.

We have Karen and Ted Wheeler deciding to have a kid (Nancy willingly went inside) the baby spends nine month in the womb (Nancy spends the amount of time that she is not stuck here, but still sees the place and the demogorgon) than the water breaks (Nancy starts to leave) and the mother's body helps her (demogorgon start to chase her) the baby is born with the help of others and there are people waiting for her arrival (Jonathan)

Also real birth is fucking traumatazing so good job on that one too Duffers

Now like I said with Nancy its more metaphorical, like she saw hell and that made her change as a person.

But that's just makes El's whole ordeal more confusing. First El is draggeg into the UD by a Demogorgon that she demateralized with her powers.

Than in s2 we have El calling out to Mike as she wanders the UD, but there is no Demogorgon (aka help from the mothers body) as she tries to get out, but in the end she escapes through a portal, like Nancy.

I'm going to circle back in a minute

William Byers

So in season one we have Will being kidnapped, that is the first episode and the whole catalysts of the show. Now like with El, Will is dragged into the UD involuntary by a demogorgon, he spends most of the first season there and in the end he is saved by Hopper and Joyce who are bringing him out through the gate in the laboratory.

So we have two kids, whom are in the first season established to be look alikes, so much so that they could've be confused to one an other. They are both dragged into the UD by a demogorgon and they are trapped there, El enters the place on her own through a portal but Will is stuck and has to be carried out through a gate.

Demogorgons

Something that I've been stuck on is the whole thing about El and Will being dragged into the womb by something that is from the womb and I might be crazy but I think Will and El are tube babies.

In that case we would have a mother and a father desparate for a baby but it's just not coming together. That's when they hear about a doctor who could help. Doctor Brenner takes from the mother and father and the zygotes are made than they are put in the womb of the mother in hope that at least one stuck. They got lucky there is two zygotes that now growing and it all seems fine.

But they don't know something.

The demogorgons are under Vecna's control that he achived with the MF, demogorgons are our zygotes and they are infected with 001 powers (not DNA, Brenner has been trying to recreate him for a time now so he does a science thing that ends with artificial powers or something like that) via Brenner.

El openes the Mothergate which is the reason why Vecna can reach Will, the Demogorgon can open portals thanks to the gate being open and the Demo going through it.

Now El we know after being in the UD comes out premature, she was supposed to stay as the UD wasn't reacting to her escape, the body of the mother wasn't helping with the birth, El still struggles out in the natural way.

On the other hand Will is stuck in the UD, he can't born in the natural way, that's when the emergency c section is in motion, El coming prematurely (probably thanks to Brenner messing with the pregnancy and the zygotes) coused problemes with the other baby, Will. That's when the s section happened.

Both times the person responsible is Brenner. Brenner is the one manipulating the pregnancy and the one making El going into the in between place.

Enter season 2

First I thought that I was crazy, than I remembered what happens next season with the characters.

So Will is in the hospital for a while, than he is brought home by his mother who is fussing over him and being protective and she is so scared for him and for good reason. Will is not fully okay, the whole ordeal left it's mark on him. He is sick, can't sleep well and he just can't seem to get any better.

In season 2 he still has the connection to the UD and he also gets possessed by the MF, which is what happened to him. Having Vecna's power and Brenner manipulating the pregnancy and the birth left their effects on him and his life.

While El after birth ends up in the hands of a random man, she doesn't know, who locks her up, has a bunch of rules she has to follow and becomes her Papa/father. Of course Hop is not Brenner, but still there are the parallels and that is what happened to El. After she was born, she was kidnapped by Brenner who locked her up, abused her and get her to call her Papa.

The big difference is that Hopper is acting that way because he already lost a daughter, he doesn't want to loose El, and it is dangerous for her outside. But he grows and learns and fails and apologies for his mistakes, he actually becames her father. I'm mean he is her father so I hoped he would grew into his role.

Vecna is cherry-picking

There is this gate called Twelvegate, according to that Will is twelve and the twin brother of El, and I saw it plausible especially with how I think Stranger Things is really built up.

I think Hopper and El from the same timeline, which follows.

Hopper and Joyce are married, they are struggling to have kids so they end up getting the help of a doctor, Brenner, he manipulates the pregnancy and the birth, El is born premature but strong, Will is stuck. Hopper demands the doctors to help Will, in the mean time El disappears (she is taken away by commands of Brenner by a nurse maybe Terry?). Brenner does the emergency c section, Will comes out dead so they have to revive him, something that they claim didn't work.

Hopper lost both El and Will, Joyce and him and up breaking up, meanwhile Will and El are raised in the laboratory as Eleven and Twelve.

Vecna picks out this Hopper and El, putting them in his little game he created with time travel and stolen powers. He messes with Hops memories thus Sara is created. She is the fuson of El and Will. A little girl who died in cancer, she wasn't breathing and they couldn't bring her back. Sara is Will and El on that fucked up day he lost two child at once.

El is from this timeline too, she and Will were trapped by Brenner but unlike Will she survived the massacre in 1979. That is why El recognises Will in season 1, because she knows him, they grew up together.

I also think that season 1 El and season 2 El are not the same person, that's why we never learn how she knew Will. Either that or when she was in UD Vecna started messing with her memories and Will and Twelve became two separate person.

I'm also trying to figure out if Jonathan would be from a timeline where Joyce and Lonnie get together and he is their son, or if he is from a reality where Hopper and Joyce got lucky. Like Jonathan literally being a miracle to them.

I'm also curious if you think the whole this is a patched together timeline from others thing true (or just like to entertain the idea) what do you think, who is from what timeline?

THE LACK OF WATER IN THE UPSIDE DOWN

So, I started to think of the silly question "how did Will survive in the upside down if there's no water there?", and, after thinking about that and reading some of your analysis, everything got weirder than it already was.

Let's start with a basic acknowledge: the human body can survive with no water for just 3-5 days.

Will has been stuck in the UD for a week.

Erica pointed this out specifically in the show: if the human body doesn't get water it'll die.

As we know, there's zero water in the upside down. (we saw the gate at the Lover's lake, and there was... no lake)

And, that first question, still doesn't have a single answer. It leads to more questions.

Before mentioning them, I should say what the Upside Down is. The creators defined it this way: The Upside Down is a region that exists outside of space and time-a terrifying, colorless underworld overrun by death and decay and populated by faceless monsters.

and, this is how they described Will's dissappearance.

There are three options/theories: At first, we thought of the fact that time is frozen. We know that time is, somehow, fucked up in the UD. We don't know why, but it's frozen in the past.

-> Does it mean that time does not run there? If that's it, that's the answer. Will was never that amount of days in that dimension. It's like, I don't know, Narnia for example, where the kids spent MONTHS in that world, but when they returned, no more than a few seconds had passed (in this case, it would be the opposite)

-> But if time does run in the UD... how did Will survive?

The second option is: Will was never in the UD, or at least, not for most of that week. Here is were we go back to the theory that says that Will was a lab kid and they were the ones who took him away. Them, not 001 and not a demogorgon.

If he was in the lab, he could survive because he was still in the -normal- dimension.

The third option is: Water is a way to get through the UD, we know this because the only thing we can see in the void is water. so, Will may have spent a lot of time between dimensions (he created a portal, so he almost makes it to the real Hawkins / he could also see and touch El in the void, which means that he was probably there too)

-> if you notice, will's hair is wet.

Maybe that was his water source. Apparently, every person who was phisically taken to the UD, coughed water, so that means that before getting to the UD, they've been through the void.

Why so many mentions of Barb in S4? Because it's not just about Nancy

@chirpsythismorning @lilitblaukatz I finally have a theory. I didn't understand what all those mentions meant until I found another one in 4x01.

A hidden reference, in a school project, to Barbara Henry, the woman who teached little Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School, New Orleans. Barbara, Henry and William. And El had Henry as a mentor...

EDIT (spoiler of The First Shadow) There's another mention in . The name of main character of the play in the play (Joyce's play) the Dark of the Moon, is Barbara Allen.

So, if most of these Barb mentions/references are connected to Will and El, maybe she's not just important for Nancy's arc, but the writers are also using her story to hide hints about Will and El's story.

I talk about the references here and here. For example, Lenora is in Santa Barbara County, the hint being 805, the area code number on the Surfer Boy Pizza van. There are two Barbaras in Brenner's crossword puzzle, the day of the massacre. This means twin imagery= Willel (and Henry/Edward) and maybe different timelines.

Another twin imagery is in S2. The owls.

Also, Rick's house, where Eddie is hiding, is at 2121, Holland RD. Barbara Holland. 2121, another twin imagery, and 12 mention (the number associated with Will), but reversed. Rick is a reference to Dr Richard Brenner, mentioned in two articles in S1 (here). One of them is The boy who came back to life. The kids also say that there are 12 Ricks... I don't think these are coincidences.

So, S1 is all about the boy in the UD and the girl who escaped from the lab. Brenner refers to them as the boy and the girl. Will and El, the keys to save the world. In fact, this is the first question Joyce asks after Will's vanishing: 'Where are they?' (the keys) After they showed a key on the wall and keys on the table in Hopper's house.

Also, close up of the number of Hopper's badge, in his first scene: 380 (11) Imo, a hint that Will and El are the keys, and Joyce and Hopper are their parents.

But S1 is also about finding Will and another girl, Barb. So my theory is that Barb represents El and the writers hid some important hints in their parallels.

The boy and the girl

Barb is bleeding when she's taken to the UD, and her attack is different from what happens to Will. But she's attacked right after the scene in Will's room, where Should I stay or should I go starts playing, and the light gets brighter, something that only happens when El and Vecna use their powers. Also, Joyce sees the Demogorgon in the wall. They connected Barb to Will.

Another connection. El finds them in the void, and Joyce helps her. She helps El to find the boy and the girl, a parallel with her trying to find the keys in 1x01. And if Will is one of the keys, Barb represents the other key, El.

If this is true, what are the hints about Will and El's story?

1. Water. They find Will's fake body in the quarry, and in S1 there are random shots of lakes. Something bad happened in the past (more here and here)

Barb is taken in a pool, and water is important in the show, but it's mostly associated with danger/death. They mention another death in the quarry in 1976. Will has the first vision of the UD in 1x08, when he's washing his hands, and a vision of the Mind Flayer after he washes them in S2. El sees Heather in the bathtub, Billy sees the Mind Flayer in the shower. The song when Hopper and Joyce revive Will (I don't want to swim forever... When it's cold I'd like to die- the same song that plays when Max dies). And Owens says that El is going to drown in the water tank.

This scene in S2 also seems to hint at a parallel between El and Maria's drowning scene in the movie Frankenstein.

The word LIFE

El and a bathtub

And after the shot of Maria walking towards the lake, they show the radio and the number 11. Maybe this means that in the past El died, too, and was revived?

Also, the first time Will communicates with Joyce, she only hears him breathing. Then she tells Hopper that she knows her son's breathing. But in 1x08 Will is not breathing. In S2, when he sees the storm, he feels frozen, like when you can't breath or move or do anything. He says it again in S3, three times. In S2 Becky says that Jane wasn't breathing, and the first thing Terry says to El is: Breath.

And this is also connected to the other big hint hidden in Barb's story.

2. The official "cause" of her death, the experimental chemical asphyxiant (so she couldn't breath) is a parallel with Agent Orange and a hint about the real connection between Willel and Hopper

In S3, Will, El, Hopper and Joyce are all connected to the word orange. I didn't notice it when I watched S3 years ago, because I didn't know Hopper's backstory, but now...

Robin sees a pretty girl with read hair and says: 'Twelve o'clock!' Orange and 12 mention. Will.

Then El explodes the cup of another girl. Curiously, another redhead. Imo, another twin imagery that connect the two scenes. Also, there are four cups: Hopper, Joyce, Will and El. And the guy's outfit reminds me of a lab orderly. (I'm not forgetting Jon. I just thinks he is Lonnie's son)

In this shot the word orange is behind Lucas, but he's telling Hopper that the Mind Flayer destroyed his cabin: Hopper's connection to the events of 1959 and the curse are haunting him and his family?

Then my favorite part, because it connects all of them to Agent Orange and the keys.

Murray gives Jon and Nancy the keys of his house.

Then we see one of the keys, Will, with Joyce. When she hugs him he says that he can't breath.

And even when the camera moves on Hopper and El, we can still hear him saying 'I'm suffocating'.

The reason why I decided to analyze Barb's connection to Will and El is a strange detail in S4.

When El blames Brenner for all the deaths, the flashback shows Bob's death first, then Barb's. But in 4x02 the journalist says that it all started with Barb's death. I'm not sure what this "error" means. The only thing I could think of is the score at the Arcade in S2.

11 comes before 12 but in the Dig Dug score it's second. Barb dies before Bob, but in the flashback they show her death after his. Maybe this is also about something in Will and El's past? There's still a lot to analyze.

And, of course, Barb is very important for Nancy's arc, too. I just noticed a connection to other characters and wanted to see what it could mean.

why did the mothergate open where it did?

ok so. when Vecna opens gates, they all form on the exact spot directly above/below the victim's body, right?

just like both other times El opened gates - they formed smack dab on her "victims". on the chalkboard right behind the demogorgon and the wall right behind One.

but with the mothergate, El taps the demogorgon on the shoulder, screams, and a gate forms... on a random wall across the room?

are we all just accepting that?

shouldn't the mothergate have opened at the demogorgon's location?

if El was the opener, that would make the demogorgon the "victim" (not that that dynamic applies but I'm sticking with it), so according to the pattern of all others, the gate should've opened right where it was standing at the moment El "contacted it".

how do I know a gate didn't open on the demogorgon? well, besides that we saw where it did open, and it wasn't there - that isn't how gates work.

gates don't connect the victim's location to the opener's location. the opener's location doesn't seem to be affected at all, as far as I can tell.

plus, we're shown the exact spot where the demogorgon was in UD Hawkins before the gate opened. if Joyce or Hopper noticed a gate in the ground, they sure don't point it out.

so am I saying we've got it backwards? that the demogorgon was the opener and El was actually the victim because the gate opened near her?

that doesn't satisfy me either, because it didn't form right ON her. with El as the victim, we should have seen the floor crack apart right under her water tank.

neither El nor the demogorgon fit as the victim.

so we must choose whether to believe the mothergate, for reasons unknown, behaves differently from every other gate in that regard.

let's say it doesn't.

what if, just like every other gate, the mothergate formed exactly where the victim was. the real one.

picture: One - Vecna? is he Vecna yet in 83? Onevecbrenhenward? whatever tf I'm supposed to be calling this guy - in the Upside Down lab during El's water tank experiment. right up against that wall where that crack opens.

even lacking supernatural ways he could know what's going on, we know the RU can simply be overheard from the UD.

either way, he knows El will be in a state of extra psychic receptiveness while in her tank and that it would be a perfect opportunity to intercept her (if this isn't just Brenner's whole real objective in the first place).

if he thinks that El created the RR gate in '79 with extreme negative emotion, it's a reasonable plan to try to reconnect with her and scare the shit out of her in hopes that it'll create another gate.

look where exactly that gate formed. look how low the crack started. not even just "at accessible human height" (as opposed to lifted a bit off the ground like in '79) but lower. at sitting human height.

isn't it kinda giving...

no, really, clock the potential similarities between what I'm proposing and the soteria basement scene.

bro is on an underground floor of the lab. seated, back up against a wall, to brace for a major life changing event - more specifically, the undoing of a prior major event, which was certainly not a pleasant experience the first time - relying on Eleven to free him. literal escape hole in the room. same could all apply, no? they even gave the lab basement blue lighting like the Upside Down, which is not merely how they portray all unlit interiors.

this would also be consistent with the pattern of El only making horizontal gates, while One makes vertical gates (if he really was sitting there, the gate could just as easily have formed under him as opposed to behind him. not sure what this means, just saying)

and if true, this would mean that One isn't the demogorgon - at least, not that demogorgon at that moment, in a bodily, shapeshifting way - because that demogorgon is near Castle Byers at the moment the mothergate opened, not ten feet away against the lab wall.

"but we know El opened the mothergate by making contact with the demogorgon! they told us so right on the show!"

that's what Dustin and Lucas think, because that's how El explained it to them, because that was her best idea of how it worked back then.

"but it was the demogorgon she tapped on the shoulder! we saw it happen! it was clearly him!"

the way I think that could still work is: even if that demogorgon isn't One, like in a shapeshifting or Kali-vision way, it is under One's control, like in a Will/Billy/hive way. in other words, maybe it can be psychically One without being physically One.

and if you make psychic contact with somebody/something who is actually under another entity's psychic control, wouldn't it probably be the controlling entity you'll actually be contacting? like when Joyce tried to talk to possessed Will and it was clearly not him at the controls anymore?

again, whoever El truly achieved "psychic contact" with was not whatever was by Castle Byers, or else the gate should've formed there, right?

so then what happened after the gate opened?

I'm too unsure about this part to make real claims, but there are a few facts we have for a framework.

seems like the show wants us to think the demogorgon came through the mothergate practically immediately, but this is almost certainly not the case. I just did a post explaining the evidence, but tldr; some time greater than mere moments actually passed (I'm feeling at least many minutes, up to several hours) between these events.

and we know that at the moment the gate opened, the demogorgon was by Castle Byers.

and we know that the Byers live a little under 2 miles from the lab.

so even a demogorgon immediately summoned at a full sprint would need a little time to travel ~2 miles from the Byers' area to HNL to climb through the gate. I'm not saying I'm all in on that idea (the demogorgon's supposed path through Hawkins that night is wack), but I am saying it fits with the fact that there was a delay between the gate opening and something coming in through it.

since I'm proposing One was right there on the other side of the gate from the moment it formed, why would he not just step through? not sure about that.

is he able to?

back to my point about possible tank room parallels to the soteria scene, and there being a literal escape hole in the room - that was a hole One himself couldn't actually go through. he opened it to send someone else through. so if the parallel holds true, there's some basis there for him not being able to bodily pass through the mothergate either.

if he really couldn't come through, why not? was he so changed that the RU has become toxic to him now? did the gate opening process dematerialize him again? would his presence in the RU screw up a timeline in a way he doesn't want? idk.

if he did come through - like, in the form of the/a demogorgon or something else - why did he wait a while first?

anyway. this needs some work but you can pry the mothergate location problem from my cold dead hands

pearl buttons: an analysis of barb possibly having powers

Barb may have had powers. This isn’t the full analysis on it bc im gonna go over it in detail in the vanishing of Will Byers analysis, but let’s take a look at all of this!

First of all, this is some pretty tiny stuff, but Barb and Henry/Edward’s shirts are pretty similar, especially when looking at them from a distance. Barb’s shirt is also a VERY similar style to Robin’s Pennhurst shirt, right down to the same ruffles and bows- and who do they visit at Pennhurst? Victor Creel, tying Barb to Henry/the Creels yet again.

Barb’s shirt, much like Robin’s Pennhurst shirt, also has pearl buttons- Henry’s buttons aren’t completely pearls, but they ARE pearlescent rather than matte white, connecting Barb and Henry’s shirts in yet another way. As well, Barb has her lightning bolt binder- not only do we see Henry being struck by lightning repeatedly, but electricity, as I’m sure we’re all aware, is constantly associated with people who have powers, with things like the lights flickering and the fact that powers and gates affect electromagnetic fields. We can also see that Barb was not only bleeding from her nose, just like El and Henry (even out of the same nostril), but also bleeding out of her ears, which is something we see consistently when El used her powers.

Vecna was possibly trying to use Barb to open a gate just like how El opened the mothergate- how, though? By appearing as a demogorgon. Because it’s confirmed in s4 that he knew that El opened the mothergate when she was scared by the demogorgon, and that Vecna wanted to open his own gates, and so, it would make sense for him to go after other people with powers and attempt to replicate what happened with El, in the hopes of opening another mothergate, which would explain how Will and Barb got into the UD (they opened temporary gates, but didn’t end up opening a full mothergate).

The shot of Barb seeing the demogorgon behind her is IDENTICAL to the shot of El seeing the demogorgon in the void except for one detail- the egg behind El’s demogorgon which is an enigma all on its own and is something I still need to think on. Why parallel Barb’s vanishing to El opening the mothergate, right down to both of them not only having the same bloody nostril, but also having the same sort of smear pattern on the blood, if not to indicate that Barb also had powers and opened a gate because she, just like El, was scared by the demogorgon?

And I talked about this in a reblog awhile ago, but looking at the way that Barb spits out water (much like El in s2 after she awakens in the UD version of hawkins middle school), where else have we seen somebody drown/have water down their throat? Heather. Heather was shown drowning in the void, and when Barb sees the demogorgon, we don’t see any sort of background behind the demogorgon despite the fact that there’s elements of the harrington house and pool that SHOULD be visible. It seems like people who are forced into the UD by Henry, such as Barb and El and Will end up coughing up water, unlike people who go into the UD willingly via a portal- which makes me wonder if Henry is dragging them through the void/they end up going through the void when they open a portal. We even see El fall through the void in s3 into Billy’s memories, and we also see Nancy fall through the void into Henry’s memories/her vecna vision in s4.

It’s just really interesting to me that Barb is paralleled to both Will and El, and that we don’t know how she got into the UD or why her nose and ears were bleeding. It’s difficult without being able to compare her to other victims, as she’s the only S1 victim that we actually see in the UD, but the parallels are definitely suspicious, and Barb having powers would explain the blood and how she got to the UD and why she was targeted & details like the lighting bolts on her binder.
