The Sound and the Fury of James Franco
I finally started reading William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury after watching Lola Sebastian's video essay "The Movie James Franco Doesn't Want You To See," about Franco's film adaptation, the other day.
File this one under "books I've had on my shelf forever but for some reason hadn't read," and note that the video I mentioned contains discussions of sensitive and NSFW content related to the book and to Franco's work and behavior.
It's a great video essay, though, that does criticize (and/or just look closely at) Franco and his work but also examines his version of The Sound and the Fury as an adaptation.

why do you make art?  is what you make honest and true to your beliefs and values?  does your art center, or distract?  These are a few questions I’m thinking on after attending an artist teach-in for Pal3stin3 yesterday.
I’ve been sitting with current events and processing a lot lately.  We are out here watching whole human beings being mass bombed and murdered every day, because the powers that be are fine with sacrificing entire family lines and destroying history and cultures for oil and land.  It’s soul-crushing.  The islamaphobia, orientalism, and casual anti-asian hate I’m seeing people in my life share on social media, is also soul-crushing.  as william faulkner once said, and as all my professors have always said, the past is never really past.
when i see all this, i feel consumed by horror, and disgust, and anger. when i see our government continue to murder Indigenous people like it always has, it’s still jarring witnessing what has always happened, happen again.  Hearing my partner’s refugee family stories, and watching more people become refugees, is terrible.  I don’t understand why Pal3stinians need to do so much to prove their worth and humanity to others, and am equally freaked out how videos of their struggles are not enough for some to care.  But watching the homies continue to make art, share stories, share information, and build community through protests + teach ins, reminds me that people have always been fighting oppression, and always will– the past of our resistance continues to the now. I make what I make because it’s useless to just sit with my feelings and the facts, and take them nowhere.  I would also rather die than make dishonest work.  I hope that if I keep writing and posting about this, that you dear friends, will consider how much power your individual and group actions can have towards creating a world we can all live in.  Your feelings right now are important– they’re motivation to do something.  It’s a privilege that we’re able to sit with them.  If you’re unsure of what to do and are feeling overwhelmed, don’t worry–  I’ve got a list of things you can do right here.
1) you can learn more!  If you don’t feel well informed enough to be sure that your actions match your intentions, you can check out @palestinianfeministcollective, or @bayareapym to sign up for a teach-in session with organizers and academics. You can also check out the readings & educational resources they have linked in their bios.  Ethnic studies and Feminist studies scholars from around the world have a lot of great stuff to say on these pages.
2) you can attend protests, and share info on protests!  @JVPLA is the LA branch of Jewish Voice for Peace, a great org that has been leading huge c3as3fir3 protests all around the world.  @bayareapym is also another great page to check out for protest information and political education.  If you are located near a school or university, you can also check out its branch of SJP (for example, @ucsbSJP), or students for justice in pal3stin3.  JVP, SJP, and PYM all have local branches all over the place, so see if your town or city has a branch you can get together with!  USCPR is also a great org that’s working to end US military support to 1sra3l.  Our elected officials are ignoring us when we ask politely for them to stop murdering, so going out and protesting will help make sure they hear us and actually represent our values and beliefs.
3) if you don’t have money or time, there is also the power of boycotting!  Never underestimate the power of a “no”.  Check out the next slide to see how boycotts work to help defund the war machine, and save lives. Art credit for slide 2 goes to Mona Challabi.  Withholding your time and money from corporations that are willing to sacrifice people’s lives for resources will teach them through boycotts, that people are not down for mass murder for the sake of material wealth.  I definitely don’t want my tax or spending money going towards killing random people. if I can help it, I will make sure my money goes somewhere it will do good.
4) email or call your elected officials to tell them directly that the people want an immediate c3as3fir3!  Check out @woketeachers for info on what numbers to call, and some scripts if you need help figuring out how to voice your demands.  You can even use those phone scripts as a template for emailing your elected officials– I like to use it as a little outline before expanding it into a longer message.
Anyways, there are four powerful ways to take action instead of stewing directionless in feelings.  Please do something– your voice matters.

CORDELIA: I feel a little guilty. ANGEL: Don't. - I mean, nineteen dollars for a - sashimi couscous appetizer is money well spent. How was it anyway? Pretty good? I mean, it ought to be pretty... CORDELIA: It's delicious but that's not what I feel guilty about. ANGEL: Oh. (Sees Wesley looking at him) I'm not cheap, I-I'm just old. what other thing do you like besides Kid Icarus and Grim Adventures?
Sure, I'll bite. I'll take any excuse I can get to talk about things I like. Obviously I like a lot of other media franchises, but I opted to put those two in particular in my bio just to let other people know what I'm definitely going to be posting about the most. They're my favorites and all that. My warning to others of my chronic media obsessions. Otherwise I like a lot of Nintendo stuff: Pokémon, the Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Earthbound, etc. Whenever people ask me this kind of question I'll always tell them I like Xenoblade Chronicles, but I've only played the latest two games and I only like 3. But hey, I look cool if I say that. In terms of other publishers, I like some Capcom and Namco games like Ōkami and Katamari Damacy. I also enjoyed my time with games like Elden Ring and Hollow Knight. Oh, I really like the Parappa games too. So mostly I'm a gamer, I suppose. My favorite genre is the monster collecting RPG. I love turn based combat, and I like creating whacky teams of equally whacky monsters. On the cartoon side of things, I've been trying to watch more of them. I watched a lot of cartoons on TV as a kid but somehow I missed out on what people consider the golden age. I used to think it was just because I was young but I've talked to people a couple years younger than I am and they somehow caught the golden age shows on TV. I stopped watching cable TV when I was 11 or 12 or so and went through a brief anime phase as a teen. Most of the shows I opted to watch weren't all that good so I kinda just stopped watching anime consistently after a year or two. But I can name a few shows I like, even through all the mediocrity. Beastars and Made in Abyss are excellent, and I remember Asobi Asobase and Aho Girl being funny but I'm not a teen anymore so who knows, maybe if I revisited them I might find them cringe. I had another brief anime phase during my first year of college, if you can call it that: I was really just trying to crunch through a lot of anime based on video games. Did you know Parappa the Rapper got an anime adaptation? It's pretty interesting. As for books... I don't really like reading. I read As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner for one class not too long ago. I liked that one I suppose. It's an awfully difficult read though and I can only really say I liked it because I had the professor explain the whole plot to me in detail. Alright... I think I rambled enough now.

Is It Really That Bad?
Tumblr media
The 90s were alternately an amazing time for comedies and an absolute wasteland of garbage best forgotten. Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler both rose to prominence during this era, and both thrived in their niches, delivering some of the most well-liked movies of their careers. But it was still the 90s, and the ugly side of comedy of the time was always ready to rear its ugly head. For instance, in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, we have the infamously transphobic finale, the joke the entire film has been building up to and is so shockingly bigoted you’d think it was written by J.K. Rowling. But bad comedies were just like that back then, and even good comedies could fall victim to it.
We’re not talking about a good comedy gone bad, though. We’re here to talk about a film with a solid  1 on Metacritic and that obliterated the careers of its two leads: Bio-Dome.
At one point, it was supposed to be a much more serious film about slackers being trapped and forced to survive in the titular structure, but you know how studio executives can be, and so the film was transformed into a totally radical 90s slacker grossout comedy filled with sex jokes, farts, and other tasteless humor. There are also rumors going around that this was originally supposed to be the third Bill and Ted adventure, but those are just rumors, albeit ones that you can see how one would believe considering how this film rips off that dynamic duo while cranking their idiocy and homoeroticism up to 11.
Whatever the case, what we got was absolutely torn apart by critics, and ensured Pauly Shore would never rise above doing anything more than direct-to-video garbage for the rest of his career, and turned Stephen Baldwin into the black sheep of the nepo baby dynasty that is the Baldwins, ruining his career which then led to him becoming a born again evangelical Christian whose daughter married Justin Bieber (which is still a massive W compared to inspiring GamerGate or actually murdering someone). It’s also the film that Weird Al decided to use to describe the miserable plane trip in his song “Albuquerque,” and the way he refers to it makes it clear the film is worse than the plane exploding in the second worse aviation accident to happen over New Mexico in fiction.
Tumblr media
(This one being the worst, obviously).
But hey, maybe the critics were just being too harsh to this dumb comedy that was clearly meant to be enjoyed by stoners. With my tray table up and my seat back in the full upright position, I strapped on in and took a look at Bio-Dome to see if this comedy has a few laughs in it, or if it really is that bad after all.
THE GOOD
Well… The soundtrack is pretty good. They’ve got a lot of solid tracks on it, and Tenacious D actually briefly shows up for a cameo. It lasts maybe three seconds, but it might be the best three seconds in the movie.
undefined
youtube
There’s also a montage set to “The Safety Dance” near the end of the movie, and it might be the single genuinely funny sequence the film has to offer. I thought a few of the gags in it were pretty good, and it’s the only time the protagonist's goofy idiocy felt charming instead of revolting. And then it leads into the climax of the films, which is actually decent because there are actual stakes instead of random vignettes of these idiots dicking around. Sure, it’s decent by the standards of the rest of the movie, but credit where credit is due.
undefined
youtube
Finally, William “Walter Peck” Atherton plays a character named Dr. Faulkner, a guy who absolutely fucking hates Bud and Doyle, and thus he becomes the most sympathetic character in the entire film. You will be begging him to kill these two morons by the end. It helps that Atherton is the only person in the entire movie who is actually trying to act.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s it. Time to shift into Hater Mode.
THE BAD
The fact the entire movie hinges on these two idiots is a joke, and not a particularly funny one a that.
Tumblr media
The 90s was littered with all manner of idiot duos, most famously with Dumb & Dumber, but Bud and Doyle are easily the nadir of such characters. The big issue is they are not merely lethally stupid to the point they fuck up a massive science experiment—no, they are horribly unpleasant people. They bumble their way through the titular bio-dome, ruining the work of the scientists at every turn, but that’s not even the real problem. No, the problem is that despite having two girlfriends they supposedly adore, they not only constantly flirt with the women scientists in the dome, and even worse they crawl into their beds while they’re sleeping and start feeling them up. Ah, the 90s, where you could have your protagonists sexually assault a woman and still expect people to sympathize them while playing the violation off for laughs! Ah, but it’s okay, because they feel really bad about it, guys.
Aside from that vileness, the jokes are just as juvenile and pathetic as you can imagine they’d be. You have fart jokes, pee jokes, sex jokes, Baldwin eating Shore’s toenails… Stuff like this has its place and can be funny, but this is really the only humor the movie has. There isn’t more clever than some lame fart a stoner can laugh at while high off their ass.
Tumblr media
And maybe this could be forgivable if anyone was actually fucking trying. There are two types of bad acting in this movie: hammy, camera-mugging idiocy (our two leads) and bland, wooden delivery (the female scientists). No one in this film seems like they cared at all, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why. What is there to even give a shit about? Out of the two leads I do think Shore is probably the “better” of the two, but this is better in the sense that being kicked in the balls is better than being shot in the back of the head execution style
IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?
Look, I went into this with an open mind. You all know I’m not above enjoying some nasty, trashy comedies; two of my all-time favorite films are Freddy Got Fingered and Little Nicky, the former film especially being one I hold in high regard. But… No, this one legitimately is as bad as it’s made out to be. Weird Al must be thanking his lucky stars that plane exploded over Albuquerque so he didn’t have to sit through the rest of the movie.
Like, in the movies I mentioned, there’s at least something to latch onto. Freddy Got Fingered is essentially the greatest troll in history, with Tom Green blowing a studio’s money to make the most bogus gross-out comedy ever, and in some bizarre ways it has some artistic merit. And with Little Nicky, there’s some entertaining villains, decent jokes here and there, and just a slew of memetic lines. Bio-Dome has absolutely nothing like that; it’s just two obnoxious, unpleasant characters being played by actors who definitely can’t salvage the material delivering the stupidest gags and jokes imaginable for an hour and a half. This really is the most bottom of the barrel lowest common denominator garbage you could scrape up.
Even still, I can’t particularly say it’s the absolute worst comedy I’ve ever seen, mainly because there wasn’t much expectations it would be good. It stars Pauly fucking Shore, the only guy from Encino Man who will probably never win an Oscar as long as he lives, it being dogshit was expected compared to something like The Love Guru or even The Master of Disguise. Those films starred genuinely talented comedians, while this movie just didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, this is still one of the worst comedies ever made, but it really was something I expected would suck even if I really hoped it wouldn’t.
I honestly don’t know how this managed a 4.4 on IMDB; I get there are some lunatics who actually love this movie, but there can’t be enough to pull this out of the bottom 100 gutter, can there be? It shouldn’t have higher than a 2.5, and that’s just being generous because there is nothing about this film that is so good enough that it deserves higher.
But that’s also the thing: As bad as it is, it is utterly unremarkable. It’s just the epitome of bad 90s comedy, and while it is the worst among that crowd, it doesn’t really stand out in any notable way other than sucking really hard. This is a film bad in the most generic ways possible, and I think that’s part of why it has fallen to the wayside in terms of “worst movies of all time” lists these days. Like does it deserve to be there? Sure, but there’s just a lot more vile and offensive comedies than this to pick from. This is just a generic bad comedy at the end of the day.
If you want to see the concept done right, and shorter to boot, just watch the episode of Johnny Bravo entitled “Biosphere Johnny,” which is a parody of this film and does every single thing this movie tried to do and better, proving once and for all Johnny is a true Chad.

July’s Review
Tumblr media
The Sea, The Sea: Murdoch, Iris
I did not like Charles Arrowby and his DISGUSTING white person food (obv a joke don't cancel me). Like I grew up in an ethnic household and don't see the appeal of buttered spaghetti with basil or unseasoned salmon broil-
Putting that aside, the fact that he tried to manipulate and kidnap his childhood sweetheart who was MARRIED, doesn't really redeem him either.
Another unreliable narrator I don't like, maybe because I can't relate to kidnapping my beloved. Arrowby is truly an unlikable character, he has twisted ideals and even goes as far as to become a monster because of his obsessive love for Hartley.
Murdoch has an amazingly unique and witty writing style, which I do admire greatly, and I would like to read some of her non-fiction/philosophical works!!!
The Rubaiyat: Khayyim, Omar [7.5/10]
I feel like this is one of those books that trend in the Western world due to its "oriental" nature, as well with its mystical, other-worldly themes.
It's good though, I'm not hating on the Rubaiyat. It's romantically poetic and flowing, which is something I look for in poetry.
I do see how the Rubaiyat would take the world by storm. I actually learned about this book through that Buzzfeed Unsolved video on the Somerset Man, which is also amazing haha.
I also didn't include a photo because the book was from a library and I had to return it fyi
The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with The Sea: Mishima, Yukio
Done and dusted, I wrote a whole analysis on the novella. Let me know if you're interested in reading it :)
If you're new here, one thing you should know is that I love Mishima Yukio! There's something compelling about his work and that also applies to TS2FGWTS
Noboru is such a little shit. I found him quite unlikable and unreliable as a narrator in a sense. I hated how everyone mistook his hatred and sociopathic tendencies as the innocence of a young teen. That's how you get killed *looks at Ryuji*
Everyone in the story is at fault here, and Mishima doesn't avoid saying that in the slightest. Noboru's mother and fiancé, Ryuji, enabled the young boy and his vile actions. Not to mention Noboru's friends, walking red flags all over!
Everyone is also miserable in their own ways. It's like it's almost a characteristic in Japanese literature; everyone is either miserable or boring-Other than that, I really enjoyed reading this book :)
The Trial: Kafka, Franz [9.5/10]
Mhmmmm, Kafka *swoons*
I love him very, very much. Most of us tumblr users do. I have never met two types of tumblr users, those types being: mentally stable and the other being:  Kafka-hating.
The Trial is famously known for its trial of Josef K., who had supposedly done nothing wrong, but was thrown into the bureaucratic process of figuring out what he had done wrong.
It's a complexly written book without a set pace (but feels like it drags on forever) and many turns, but I promise you that it's an amazing read. It is difficult, but it's a rewarding type of difficulty, not a "holy shit i'm going blow my brains out" type of difficulty.
Also, same situation with the Rubaiyat
#freemymanjosef,wedon'tevenknowwhathedidwrong-
Selected Poems of Pasternak
I read this one for the sake of reading. Not for academic or discussion reasons. I read it because I felt drawn towards it.
I found this book at a secondhand bookstore in the Dongdaemun area of Seoul. The seller said he obtained this book from a clear-out at the U.S. air base in Osan. It felt like fate had found its way to that bookstore on that day. And so I purchased it for 3,000 won or around 2 dollars and 30 cents-
It's beautiful, Pasternak's work. It isn't overly flashy or bombastic, it depicts a quaint life and unique themes in nature; so I would recommend reading this book in the spring/winter months.
My Sister Life stood out to me the most, I would like to recommend it.
The Sound and the Fury: Faulkner, William
This just wasn't my thing. It wasn't difficult, but it was rather off-putting to me. Not to mention that I didn't really feel like picking up and reading the book.
This book was surprisingly dark? Like, wow. Faulkner really served with this one. Justice for Benjy, his treatment was undeserved. His mom needed to chill-
Faulkner did a spot on job with depicting a dysfunctional, decaying family. I also admire his usage of multiple viewpoints and stream of consciousness, but other than that, nothing particularly stood out to me.
Giovanni's Room: Baldwin, James
Added to my list of favorites!!! We're ending July right!!! I was actually supposed to finish this book in August, but it was so addicting!
This book was so, so amazing. There's so much I could cover, but I'm going to write an analysis about it soon; so let me know if you're interested in that.
David and Giovanni deserved to be happy (despite their mutual destructiveness). Fuck Guillaume, I didn't like him too much-
The plot aside, the writing itself is a work of art! I loved Baldwin's first novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, so I feel like Giovanni's Room is a satisfying runner-up.
Since the novel does touch upon internalized homophobia and homosexuality in general,  it was called Baldwin's "professional suicide note", but personally think that this book had served its purpose as a foundation for queer literature and artistry. Truly ahead of its time.
I am simultaneously happy and unhappy with this month’s reading list. I didn’t read a lot of books, seven to be exact. It doesn’t follow the flow of my regular reading pattern, and I felt disappointed in myself because I promised myself I would read more during my summer break :(
On the other hand, I was reading books I was happy with. There are so many good reviews and I really enjoyed reading these books.
As July says goodbye, August brings its greetings. Stay safe everyone :)

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge - Part 1
Revenge is my favorite MCR album, though Black Parade and Bullets are close behind. You can really see how they took the intensity, emotion, and boldness of Bullets and refined and perfected it. Every single song is an absolute banger that works well on its own but is even better within the context of the album. The concept is interesting and something you can explore if you want to but also not distracting or necessary to understand in order to enjoy the album. I also really enjoy the general look and style of the album and the era.
Helena - an instant classic, beautiful and tragic and brimming with anger and pain, a song that really helped establish MCR’s place in pop culture, I love the effect on Gee’s voice at 2:07-2:32 during the bridge and how everything comes back in at 2:38 after “When both our cars collide”, overall it’s a truly elegant and honest expression of grief and self-loathing (I mean “Just like the match you strike to incinerate / the lives of everyone you know”) and that’s not even touching on the music video. The music video is iconic and theatrical and beautiful, and it demonstrates MCR’s dedication to every creative and artistic aspect of their work. If you’re interested, I highly recommend checking out the making of video, which is a lot of fun and gives some insight into the creative process of the music video, and the outtakes video, which shows several full clips of dancing and the band performing. I especially want to highlight the performance from 10:01 to 13:24 in the outtakes version, in particular 12:09-13:24, none of which appears in the official music video but which is one of Gerard’s most emotive and heart wrenching performances that I’ve seen
Give ‘Em Hell Kid - great little song, some of the franticness and intensity and noise of Bullets (but cleaner) especially at the beginning, my favorite part is the ending starting at 2:06 when Gerard says “What’d you call me / well there’s no way I’m kissing that guy” followed by a sort of cacophony and then broken up when Gee says ”Yeah” with a fun effect on his voice, I also really like the wa-oh sounds at 1:25-1:28, overall a fairly short but effective and enjoyable song
To the End - one of my favorites, super underrated, some very fun lyrics, I always love the line “She drives at 90 by the Barbies and Kens”, my favorite part is the pre-chorus (”If you marry me / would you bury me / would you carry me / to the end”), I especially like the lead up to the final “to the end” starting at 2:36, I’m a big fan of the imagery and vibe of the song, it has dark aspects but it’s very playful and witty and more approachable than some of the heavier and more aggressive songs on the album. The song is based on the short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner (The True Lives of My Chemical Romance, 103)
Prison - the most fun song on the record, the intro is great, I love the weird sound in the background at 1:02-1:05, (also, I thought the line at 1:05 was “they made me do pushups in track” for a long time until I read that it’s actually “they made me do pushups in drag”, which makes way more sense in the context of the song, but I just though it was funny he was airing unrelated high school trauma in his song about gay prison sex), my favorite part is at 2:06-2:26 with the screaming and guitar solo then followed by a moment of calm at 2:27-2:29 when Gee says “Life is but a” and then everything is brought back in at 2:30 when he yells “dream”, I also love his screams and how they work with the guitars at 2:47-2:52 and his weird little giggle at the very end, overall an amazing song and one of my favorites to listen to and also to watch live. Gerard’s intros to prison are fairly well known, and these are some of my favorites: moaning with audience, solo los muchachos take your shirts off, Detroit boys take your shirts off, and boys boys boys. Also, some fun facts, Prison was “inspired by [Gerard Way and Bert McCracken] sharing a kiss in a game of on-the-road truth or dare. (‘When you’re kissing a guy with a beard,’ Gerard said, ‘it’s different.’)” (The True Lives of My Chemical Romance, 93). And Gerard also said “‘When I sang “You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison”, I was running pornography in the room...I wasn’t wearing very many clothes either. I was in an attic that nobody was allowed into. I do remember Howard encouraging me to get pretty weird in there and I think I got weird in my own ways too’” (The True Lives of My Chemical Romance, 91).
I’m Not Okay - one of if not my favorite Revenge song (it’s so hard to choose though), immensely comforting to me for some reason, just hearing the guitars in the intro cheers me up, a feel-good song for me despite some of the dark lyrics, there’s just something deeply reassuring about it, which I guess is part of the point -- the assurance that it’s okay to not be okay and its very open and upfront nature, my absolute favorite part is of course the guitar solo at 1:52-2:06, I also adore the quiet part at 2:18-2:23, the line “I’m not o-fucking-kay” at 2:47 is another of my favorite parts, though everything from 1:52 to the end is brilliant, overall just an incredibly cathartic and wonderful song. Also, the video is just amazing, probably my favorite MCR music video, though I think Helena is more iconic and The Ghost of You is more cinematic. I love the intro and the whole fake movie trailer schtick and just everything about it. There’s also the making of video, which is hilarious (especially 2:47, 5:31, and 12:49), the outtakes version of the music video, which shows full clips (check out 4:43 and 5:56), and this kind of alternate video of the song without vocals, which shows clips of the band leaving the house to go to a show
The Ghost of You - another favorite of mine off Revenge, simple in a lot of ways especially in terms of song structure but incredibly effective, I love the contrast between the soft, slow, more melodic verse sections and the more intense, aggressive chorus, very direct lyrically but still beautiful and haunting, Gee’s voice is so expressive, my favorite part is the shift from the quiet bridge at 1:58-2:11 to the lead up to the final chorus at 2:12-2:37. The video of course speaks for itself since it’s an absolute cinematic masterpiece. The way it highlights the contrast between the chorus and the verses by switching between the dance and the soldiers storming the beach is brilliant. Then that one transition shot at 1:28, chef’s kiss, should have won an award for that alone. And Gerard’s acting (and Mikey’s too) is just incredible. My favorite part of the video is how after Mikey runs out and gets shot, Gerard in the flashback grieves as well. It’s really visceral, and I love it. The making of video is also really cool, as is the outtakes version
I was planning to just have one post for the entire album, but this got way too long. I’ll post the second half soon, hopefully.

weird question i know, but in one of your ask you mentionned Hamlet and while i don't go as far as thinking you liked the play just because you talked about it, is there any classical/literary works you enjoyed or particularly liked ?
I read Hamlet in school (I believe it's standard for students to read some Shakespeare in Anglophone or Anglo-controlled regions?), but I wouldn't call it a personal favorite. There is an obvious joke to it, that the play often labeled the greatest is the English language is in fact about Danes.
There's quite a few literary works I enjoy, and many of the fictional characters that have resonated with me the most come not from video games but from novels and plays. At university I specialized in 19th and early 20th century French and British literature, and that in combination with elements of Louisiana's own literary tradition forms the core of my interest in that area although not the entirety of it. As a child my favorite conte was always Perrault's "Cendrillon," and I like adaptations of that story that preserve its French character. De Laclos's Les Liaisons dangereuses was introduced to me via adaptation, and especially after reading the novel for myself I can say that it's produced one of my favorite villains.
More in my usual wheelhouse, of course I read all the big 19th century French novelists; Balzac may be my favorite in general - I love his whole comédie humaine concept of interconnected stories - although I did actually spend some time in the fandom for Les Misérables about a decade ago in my early days on Tumblr. For the Irish and British I gravitate more toward the modernists: Joyce and Yeats and Woolf (whose work inspired one of the few 21st century novels I've really liked, Michael Cunningham's The Hours) and Forster.
Over in Louisiana, Chopin is most known for The Awakening although I enjoy some of her short stories about the Louisianais as well. Faulkner is famously inscrutable, but as you can probably tell from my own writing I can respect the ability to string together very long sentences. His Absalom, Absalom! is a particular favorite as it prominently features New Orleans, and much of its plot hinges on the - as it's sometimes called - transnational character of the city. Of course I can't forget playwright Tennessee Williams, who (perhaps unknowingly?) eulogized French Louisiana in the mid-20th century with A Streetcar Named Desire, possibly the best-known literary work set in this city that doesn't involve vampires. I'm not terribly fond of Anne Rice's writing, but growing up with the knowledge that she'd mythologized my culture as hedonistic, bloodsucking undead was admittedly kind of fun in a way. Tourists who come here for their occult fascinations are absurdly easy to impress.

Lyric Video: Ghostly Kisses Share Spectral "On & Off"
Lyric Video: Ghostly Kisses Share Spectral "On & Off" @ghostly_kisses @grandstandhq @ghostly_kisses @AkiraRecords
Québec City-based indie pop outfit Ghostly Kisses — singer/songwriter Margaux Sauvé and Louis-Étienne — derives its name from William Faulkner’s “Une ballade des dames perdues,” which seemed to Sauvé like the perfect reflection of her ethereal voice. With the release of their acclaimed full-length debut, Heaven, Wait, the French Canadian pop outfit received attention both nationally and…

Have you read any novels or essays by William Gass? I've heard great things about him and particularly about The Tunnel, which has been sitting on my shelf for years, unread and forbidding.
I've read a number of his essays over the years, browsing through his collections, or even when they used to appear in Harper's in the 2000s. I have a video lecture on his famous essay, "The Medium of Fiction." He's brilliant, eloquent, maybe a bit too clever, too much the formalist. His defense of the artist's freedom are inspiring and heartening, though:
It is the moralists who want to bully and beat up on the artists, not the other way around. The error of the artists is indifference. Not since Plato’s day, when the politicians in their grab for public power defeated the priests, the poets, and philosophers, have artists, except for an occasional Bronx cheer, molested a moralist. Authors do not gather to burn good deeds in public squares; laws are not passed by poets to put lying priests behind bars, nor do they usually suggest that the pursuit of goodness will lead you away from from both beauty and truth, that it is the uphill road to ruin. Musicians do not hang moralizing lackeys from lampposts as though they were stringing their fiddles; moralizing lackeys do that. ("The Baby or the Botticelli," Finding a Form)
I've barely read his fiction, though. I started Omensetter's Luck and didn't dislike it but also didn't finish. Too rich a dish, maybe, or Faulkner without Faulkner. The Tunnel qua concept holds little appeal to me.

The Americans Release Powerful Music Video for "Land of the Free"
Tumblr media
Acclaimed Los Angeles-based band The Americans released their latest video or “Land of the Free,” from the intricate new EP, Strays, today.
"Land of the Free," is a powerful anthem about homelessness. With a Tom Waits-crooner opening, featuring piano and upright bass, the song falls into a dreamscape of rolling rhythms and shimmering electric guitars. "O'er the land of the freeways," sings frontman Patrick Ferris, "and the home of the strays."
youtube
The video is a powerful and poignant piece that sheds light on the issue of homelessness in Los Angeles. The video opens with a haunting melody and scenes of people living on the streets, capturing the harsh realities of life without a stable home. Through evocative imagery, the video paints a vivid portrait of individuals from diverse backgrounds who have found themselves in the clutches of poverty and homelessness, highlighting the often unseen struggles faced by those living on the margins of society. As the music intensifies, the video doesn't shy away from the harsh truths of the issue, but it also portrays moments of resilience and hope, reminding viewers of the strength and humanity that persist in the face of adversity.
The Americans' "Land of the Free"  is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged exploration of a pressing social issue. The video's raw and honest portrayal of homelessness, coupled with the band's compelling performance, makes "Land of the Free" a thought-provoking and socially conscious work of art that strives to make a difference by raising awareness and advocating for change.
Both “Land of the Free,” and Strays is an impressive demonstration of the band's ability to reinvent rock & roll through the prism of early folk and blues. Patrick Ferris (vocals/guitar), Zac Sokolow (guitar), and Jake Faulkner (bass) deliver an album that lands somewhere between Bruce Springsteen and Nathaniel Rateliff. Over the last several years, they've backed Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams, Ashley Monroe, and Devendra Banhart, and joined Ryan Bingham on four national tours. They worked closely with Jack White and T Bone Burnett, joining Nas, Elton John, and Alabama Shakes in the PBS/BBC primetime series American Epic. They have appeared on The Late Show (CBS), and their music was featured in the films Texas Killing Fields, A Country Called Home, Little Glory, and the TV series No Tomorrow.
"Land of the Free" by The Americans is not just a music video; it's a rallying cry for change and a testament to the power of art to shed light on crucial social issues.

Monday Motivation #Meditation #OracleCards #NewBusinessVenture
Happy Monday! I love today’s quote from William Faulkner! Isn’t it so true? Unless we take a step outside our comfort zones, we never experience anything new. So, here’s to pushing away from the shoreline! Since I have been practicing daily Qigong (pronounced Chi-Gong) exercises that also incorporate breath work, therefore making it a meditation, I thought I’d share a simple beginner video with…
