Hello empiresblr! We're in the early stages of planning an Empires SMP themed zine focused on worldbuilding and we are doing a bit of an interest check :)

What's the deal with this zine?

This zine is about Empires SMP Season 1, focused on exploring and expanding the worldbuilding and lore of the series. The name, Empiropedia, is a play on words between ‘empire’ and ‘encyclopedia’- it’s not structured quite like a regular zine, instead presented as if it were an in-universe book (or books) that puts together different sources to describe the culture and history of the 12 different empires. The zine will include both illustrations and writing. Some of the things we want to include are clothes, architecture, folklore, and artifacts/cultural items!

What's the difference between the two options the poll offers?

We are currently deciding whether we want to make one (very big) zine with a set amount of pages dedicated to each empire, or if we want to make multiple zines (one at a time) with one dedicated to each empire. Both options have pro and cons listed below!

120+ pages zine:

Pros:

An overall shorter project since it would be put together all at once

More intersection between different empires (pages dedicated to discussing alliances and the like)

People participating can contribute work to multiple empires more easily

Less pdf files to download! :D

Cons:

FAR less space for each empire to shine and be explored

A pretty long read

While it will take less time overall, it will definitely take much more time and coordination to put together than one singular empire zine of the 12 zines option.

12 separate zines:

Pros:

So much space to truly explore each empire!

You can decide which zines to pick up according to what your favourite empires are

The overall project will be able to include more artists and writers

Each singular zine will take less time than the 120+ pages zine to put together

Cons:

A much bigger project that would stretch over a way longer amouth of time to get to all empires being included

A lot less cross-working between different empires

Certain empires might not get as many applications from artists, making it harder to put together a zine dedicated completely to them

Will Season 2 be included?

While we are thinking of making a similar project focused on Season 2 that's pretty far off in the future, so for now we are focusing on the current project.

How/when can I apply?

We are currently getting everything set up, and we might open mod applications before opening contributor applications, so for now we don't have a set date. All necessary information to apply (including a timeframe) will be provided as soon as we set everything up!

Light Screen: A Pokemon x Color speed run zine

Concept: Contributors will about 2 weeks to complete a mini piece that relates to the theme, features one of the colors from our palette and at least one pokemon (or trainer) of their choice.

Content Restrictions and Requirements

Theme: 🤫 Our secret theme will be revealed in the Discord server once the project begins to add to the challenge. (The theme will be broad and open to interpretation)

Rating: SFW, PG

Characters: Should include one pokemon or established character in the Pokemon universe; no OC trainers or fanmade pokemon designs.

🌈Cover Artist Due to the nature of this zine, we will not have a specific cover artist.

🌈 Using our Color Palette: The main highlight of your work should be the one of the five colors provided. Artists: Think hue-vember; you do not have to do a monochrome palette and you do not only have to use the given colors. Your piece simply has to highlight/heavily feature the specific shade of color provided. Writers: Focus on items that are the same shade of the color or even emotions evoked from looking at it. Feel free to just use words that describe the colors: "lavender", "sage", "sky blue", "mauve". You are free to interpret it how you want to as long as it's reasonable.

Hey! I'd love to apply to your zine but have a quick question.

Most zines I've seen had requirements for submissions. Since I haven't seen any on your socials, I was just wondering if you have any requirements for the submissions for Writers? E.g. a max. Wordcount or can one submission be an Excerpt? Do they have to be finished pieces etc.

Hello!

Yes, there are requirements for the zine. They weren't included in the interest check form because I wasn't expecting so many people to be ready to fill out the application already 😅. But the requirements are now decided on and they are as follows:

For Writers:

Max 2.5k word count

Must be able to be read as a standalone (additions can be made after zine exclusivity ends)

For Artists:

Art must be 7"x9" (7.25"x9.25" canvas to include bleed), 300dpi, and exported in CMYK format.

Content Guidelines:

Keep in mind that this zine is meant to be an exploration of the peace and comfort that Aziraphale and Crowley will find, finally on their own side, together after everything is all said and done. Minor angst is allowed, but happy endings should be the focus in this zine.

Additionally, this zine will not be including crossovers and AUs. Tinkering with canon events, fanon, headcanons, etc. are allowed, but your work should generally adhere to TV Show/Book canon. Adherence to Season 2 events is not mandatory.

This zine will also be SFW only.

Zine work should be focused on Aziraphale and Crowley, but other characters are allowed alongside them.

The following topics are not allowed: Major Character Death Graphic Depictions of Violence Sexual Harrassment or Assault Slurs or Bigotry Eating Disorders Self-Harm or Suicide

What is a zine? A zine is a collection of artwork, stories, and sometimes additional creative works, all focused on a particular theme and created by fans, assembled into a small book! Often, in addition to the zine itself, projects like this include merchandise such as stickers, prints, and charms.

Zine Type P4P, meaning this zine will be priced at the cost of production. Any profits will go to a charity that will be announced before pre-sales open.

Content FAQ

Will this zine be NSFW? While it hasn't yet been decided how SFW and NSFW will be divided, NSFW works will be a part of the project, be it as sister zines, a mini zine, or a mixed zine!

Does the age gap of this ship mean underage NSFW will be allowed? Nope. All sexually NSFW works will be required to portray characters as 18+.

Will there be any other content restrictions? We won't be allowing omegaverse, self-inserts, or reader-inserts, and all pieces must focus on KakaSaku.

Is AI art/fic allowed? Absolutely not.

Participation FAQ

Who's allowed to participate? Anyone 18+! We do ask that anyone who supports the Israeli occupation of Palestine and/or the Russian invasion of Ukraine does not apply.

Do I need zine experience to participate? Am I more likely to be accepted if I have it? Not at all! You'll need writing/art samples to apply, but zine experience is irrelevant and won't factor into applications.

Canon Compliant. Sailor Moon takes place in 1992 which is a determining factor in our 90's nostalgia theme

All Sailor Moon Series and official spin offs can be referenced.

Question speed run from one curious responder to the interest check‼️

“Is a Tumblr account required?”

To participle in the zine? No. A Discord is required, but having a tumblr, twitter, or insta has no affect on zine participation.

“Do contributors have to pay for some items in the zine?”

That depends on sales! Ideally, each contributor will receive a full bundle, no charge.

“Is anyone allowed to work on this zine? Minors included?”

Contributor applications are 16+, moderator applications are 18+

“Generally, what does ‘for-profit’ mean? Who will get the money?”

Profit will be evenly distributed amongst contributors/moderators. The profit will depend on sales and shipping expenses.

“Do the mods have any experience?”

Experience as moderators? Yes. While moderator applications are still open until October 15th, 3/5 selected moderators have exemplary experience in zine leadership roles.

“How heavy will the expected work load be?”

That depends on the contributor! For example, artists will be expected to make a minimum of one page, but are allowed to make more pages/comics if they desire to. Writers will be given a word count range to fit into, so it’s up to them if they write towards the minimum or the maximum. The work load will be as heavy as the amount of work contributors put into their pieces.
