There's something so powerful about Luffy, Sun God Nika, always waiting for people to ask him for help, because he wants them to have freedom in their choices, because he doesn't do it for charity or pity, but because he cares about people and wants them to be free. And he's thankful of being asked to help, because being needed means not being alone.

everytime i read luffy's backstory again, this is the part that breaks me the most.
asking someone you love to not die is such a childlike request: filled with affection, attachment, fear of loneliness, and somehow the belief that love is so strong it will indiscriminately keep people safe and prevent bad things to happen to them. and voicing such request, for a child, is a way of being sure that because it was promised, nothing bad will happen to their loved ones.
it's so pure and innocent.
they way luffy first interacted with loss and grief had him feeling lost, and it made ace his north star even more than he was before: his brother, his protector, his best friend, his guide, his inspiration, his family.
for ace though it was different. ace was left alone being the big brother, the tough one, the one who had to be strong for his little brother and an example for him while forgetting that he was a child as well. he was never allowed to be one, to let his guard down, to not have to carry the world on his shoulders.
i think ace's childhood is one of the saddest tragedies in one piece, because it so realistically depicts how devastating it is to be neglected, and spending your whole life searching for your right to live, for belonging, love and acceptance.

thinking about how sanji is simultaneously one of the coolest and lamest characters in all of one piece. a suave badass with a heart of gold AND a pathetic, wet paper bag of a human being. every time he's on screen i'm swooning over him while also fighting through twenty layers of cringe. truly a man of multitudes.
