Arriving in Amsterdam Amsterdam Centraal Train Station October 9, 2022 We took a very convenient train that runs every 30 min from Eindhoven to Amsterdam, Netherlands (69 miles-78 min) to spend the last two days of our Europe vacation visiting this charming city before we flew home. Built in 1889, the Amsterdam Centraal train station is immense and busy (although this photo was captured in a quieter moment). It is located in the center of Amsterdam, so there is good public transportation right at the train station. It was about a 20 min walk to our hotel in the Canal District. We opted for a 5 min taxi ride due to baggage — very easily obtained. We just walked out of the train station and one was waiting. Other options were a 10 min tram or a 14 min bus. There is also a train from Amsterdam Centraal train station to Amsterdam Schiphol airport that runs every 10 min. So convenient. Coming from Shelton, Washington where you have to drive 34 miles-45 min to the nearest Amtrak train station in Lacey, WA, which has kiosks only and no baggage service, and only three trains daily for the Amtrak train ride (40 miles-67 min) to the Tukwila train station closest to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac), which is still 5 miles away from the airport and literally just a stop on the tracks, with no obvious services, unless you arrange for a local taxi in advance or call an Uber or hike to the nearest public bus stop that provides sporadic service to the airport — well, let’s just say that it’s a whole lot easier to get around the Netherlands (and all of Europe) by train than it is here in Washington State. To be fair, since we live in the boonies in WA, it’s not quite an apples to apples comparison. Eindhoven, Netherlands October 2022 Old Meets New Series I While we were visiting my daughter and son-in-law in the Netherlands this fall, I spent a couple of days exploring Eindhoven, the nearest city, just a short 15 minute bus ride from her home in Veldhoven. Very good public transportation runs frequently between the two, with buses every 10 minutes or so. I was struck with the contrast between old and new in downtown Eindhoven and environs. The city manages to make it all work in an interesting and appealing fashion. It did not hurt that the weather was drop dead gorgeous for our autumn visit towards the end of the first week in October. This first series of 10 images compares and contrasts one old building or view with a new modern one. Veldhoven, Netherlands October 2022 Picking up where I left off on our Europe vacation photos that I started posting way back before the holidays … Off to the Netherlands! After we left Lisbon, Portugal, we flew to Eindhoven, Netherlands to stay with my daughter Christina Lynn Porter (@christinalynnporter ) and her husband Galen Patrick Miley (@galeforcethunderbunt ) for a few days at their home in Veldhoven, Netherlands. It was our first time visiting the Netherlands and it was lovely! We had been dying to see their first home and we finally did. They spent the past year or more doing some awesome home remodeling projects, including putting in a new kitchen — they did every bit of the work themselves!!! New kitchen design, the demo work, replacing the floors with new wood plank tile flooring, plaster work, electrical work, selecting and installing new light fixtures, plumbing for a new farm sink and dishwasher, gas line installation to a beautiful antique french country style gas stove with double oven, installing a new overhead vent hood, fan and ventilation, hand making and installing wooden countertops, cutting and installing a brass backsplash, selecting and installing all new appliances, designing and installing custom cabinets, designing and installing a beautiful mirrored bar and entertainment area, hand building a new 10 person dining table with bench seating, and removing and replacing 9 large picture windows. It was just stunning!!! It is hard to believe that they did all of this work themselves, never having done anything like it before. Quite the talented pair! Rescued Christmas Rose I found this broken rose stem under my Heirloom Roses Bull’s Eye rose bush under 3 feet of heavy and crusted Pacific Northwest snow last week. The stem with four closed buds had broken off from the weight of the wet snow. I put it in a vase of water and miraculously, the buds opened!
