I've been trying to get back into the swing of things but the muse has sort of barrel-roll bailed on me into outer space and then exploded into confetti. I've often wondered the same thing, and I always end up going back to the way the world was before her- before Alice.

Before Alice... It's hard to imagine there being a time before Alice, these days, but there was. A comfortable, mundane existence in a world of research and meetings and data... but I knew even then that I wasn't the same; could not be the same. There was the world around me, and there was me. There was no coalescence, but we could abide one another, for the time being.

-and time passed. Promotions were gained. The research continued. Nothing mattered; just another new day, another new task, another new secretary-

No.

Not just another new secretary.

This was a new everything.

The day I met Alice-

That was the day the world ended.

(( Over 1000 viewers! What a landmark! Thank you all for watching :D ))

So, initially this was supposed to be a sort of ‘why haven’t these three been drawn together before’ and a big thanks to all the followers on my Jervis and Mod askblogs (which it still is), but really, when it comes down to it, it’s also a thank you to Batman: the Animated Series.

Without TAS, there would be no Teen Titans, there would be no Brave and the Bold- what that show did for the world of cartoons is hard to put into words. They wrote every episode to be a movie; to be a real, true story that people could relate to. They made a world that was stunning, stylized and impossible, but believable; inhabited by well developed characters voiced by some of the biggest names of the era. It finally put television animation on the map as a serious art, and brought the myths and magic of the Batman comics to the screen in a new light.

So, yes; thanks TAS. You scared the shit out of me as a kid. I owe you.

School was... tolerable. The material moved a little too slowly for my tastes, but it was a place of learning, so I suppose I enjoyed it well enough. I was certainly grateful for the respite from home.

As for my other interests... no, not really. I never found girls appealing in the way that my fellows did... nor did I find my fellows interesting in the same fashion. I simply didn't see any attraction in attraction. As far as I was concerned, romantic infatuation was a vulgar, childish past time designed to hurt any players foolish enough to partake in it.

Besides, I had already fallen in love with an idea; an idea that curiosity could be brave, that dreams and poems presided over reality, and that the world didn't have to make sense for it to be true and right.

Little did I know that idea was real, and had a name.

A very lovely name.

Oh? Didn't I tell you about that? Ah, well, allow me to elucidate; you see, it was on one of my expeditions to the interior. I was researching masks and the trances that certain Shamans employ. There was one particular day when I was traveling between camps that I just couldn't shake the idea that I was being followed.

It appeared my instincts were correct as usual, but it was hardly anything as concerning as a lion on my tail.

Initially I simply tried to ignore him. His feathered fellows would surely be looking for him, and I had no interest in acquiring a lacky.

But he proved difficult to dissuade, and I could hardly retrace my steps to return him; my journey was already planned, and time was limited.

Yet he still persisted... and I couldn't deny the curious creature had a certain charm to him. It occurred to me that his name was Gerald. I couldn't tell you why.

Having discovered his name I was quite powerless, and fell to consulting a friend upon the matter.

He informed me that the creature had left its kind, and its kind had left him. If I were to keep him, it would be against nature's will.

If I were to leave him, he would die.

I asked him what the right thing to do would be. He asked me whether it would matter.

I conceded it would not.

He asked me if I knew anything of raising birds. I told him I knew nothing of it.

He asked me if I had a friend who did.

I told him that I did.

-Oh, and Hubert is very good at keeping me in check, thank you, although I fancy he desires your company more than mine...

Dearest Alice, on receiving this missive my first inclination was to accept at once- but, due to certain... advice, I was forced to reflect upon the decision.

Considering the matter in a more measured manner, it strikes me that it may be wiser for me not to attend, for both our sakes. I am still quite emphatically enamored of you, so do not take this as a lack of interest or affection; but to be under such circumstances would most assuredly drive me out of my already unstable wits. The last thing I desire is to make such a joyous holiday yet into another event that you would wish to forget.

It is my belief that this is the best Valentines gift that I can give you. It is certainly expensive to me.
