“I previously thought that I would really want to use this kind of line drawing style in my work, no matter what work I did next. So even if I had done some other topic, I would have used this style as well. I had been thinking that cel animation uses some line drawing, but actual line drawing hasn’t been fully expressed in cel animation, and things have progressed more and more toward the 3D format, and I still think that it’s very worthy to have hand-drawn lines. Of course I think there are very good works that are done in 3D such as Toy Story 1 and 2, which I think are wonderfully done, but I really dislike 3D movement, so I wanted to focus on the lines”
The late Isao Takahata on the focus of hand-drawn lines in his 2013 film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, which turned out to be his final Directorial work solely under the Ghibli umbrella.

After studying Oil Painting at the College of Art in Kanazawa, Mamoru Hosoda applied for a job at Studio Ghibli hoping to start his journey to fulfill his life long dream: Directing in Animation.
However, he didn’t make the cut. The higher ups at the company did not want this bright mind to be hindered by the pressure of working at Ghibli. To show how much they admired this young up and comer, according to an interview with Freestyle Magazine, Hosoda stated that he received a personal letter from the world renowned Director Hayao Miyazaki. According to Mamoru Hosoda, the outline of the letter was that hiring him at such a young age would be a detriment to his talent.
“So we have decided to let you develop your gifts elsewhere for now”
He went on to animate on a number of different TV series before directing multiple Digimon films and most notably 4 critically acclaimed (now 5 with his most recent release Mirai) projects under the banners of Studio Madhouse and Chizu:
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
Summer Wars (2009)
Wolf Children (2012) - My personal 2nd favourite movie of all time
The Boy and the Beast (2015)
It’s safe to say Mamoru Hosoda has created his own legacy with a unique style of storytelling that I and other fans adore. I definitely recommend seeking out these 4 movies and giving them a watch if you haven’t already. You won’t regret it :)

"I feel that this film will fulfill its goal of reaching out with a feeling of solidarity to our young viewers: the young girls living in today's world who do not deny the joy of youth, nor are carried away by it, torn between freedom and dependence (because we were all young men and women once, and the young members of our staff have these very problems now). At the same time I feel that the basic potential of this film as entertainment lies in this point and that it will inspire sympathy in the viewers."
