How I feel after I cut away the malware my colorist mother left on my psyche by snipping away all of the dead and damaged bleach blonde hair and letting it grow back.

For some reason she acted like she’d only love me if I was as fair haired as I was as a baby and once the hair began to darken and look just like her she’d rush me to the store to pick up some peroxide bleach. Because of that I always thought I had frizzy dry hair but it’s actually very soft, it was only dry from damage. She did the same thing to my sister and would hold more value for her blue eyed children like my sister and I than her brown eyed children like my oldest sister and my younger brother, even though her eyes are brown.

Did she do it because seeing herself in her child re-traumatized her? I can only wonder.

She’d call me her mini me, but when I began to actually look like her mini me, she’d coat my hair in bleach again so I’d resemble my father.

Maybe she wanted me to be an idealized version of her.

Now that it regrew, it looks just like her’s, but honestly it’s beautiful and it’s sad that she couldn’t accept that about herself. It’s sad that blonde hair and blue eyes was the only beauty she’d accept.
