Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

Sign-ups for the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2024 are now open!

If you’re new here, TRSB  is a Tolkien-fandom-wide event celebrating the talent of our fanwork creators. Participating artists create a piece of art to be claimed by a signed up author. Authors will then write a 5k word fic based on the art they chose.

All sign-up forms are available here!

As well as signing up as an author and/or artist, you can sign up as a beta, cheerleader, pinch hitter, or treat maker.

Explanations of what all of these mean can be found in the relevant section of our FAQ.  Sign-ups for these roles will remain open for the duration of the event and will get you access to the gallery. However, you must be signed up as an author to claim.

The event is open to all characters, genres and ratings, and all canons that fall under the Tolkien fandom umbrella. This includes movieverse (i.e. the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies), lesser known works by Tolkien (such as The Father Christmas Letters), and/or other works with a clear link to his life or creative output (for example, Tolkien's translations and academic texts, the 2019 Tolkien biopic, fan-made films like Born of Hope, and game canons such as The Lord of the Rings Online). Crossovers between two or more Tolkien canons are permitted.

You can also mix and otherwise use prompts however way you want: maybe you want to go about it the traditional way and pick one prompt for each day, or close to it and only switch one of them for an alternate; or you can take a Day 5 prompt, a regular alternate, and cap it off with a whump trope and post that for Day 1. Pick your poison!

Day 7; June 10th: Everybody Lives/Nobody Dies | Haunted House/Castle/Palace, Regular Alternate Prompts: Courtship 

       This is a prequel to the fill for day 6!

Hunt and Roskell Oak Leaf Tiara, comb and brooch, circa 1855

It is beautiful; fine strands of rosen gold twined around each other, cradling pale rosy stones cut to perfectly resemble oak leaves. It is pristine, and so lifelike it’s as if a tree had been crystallised and this plucked from its boughs. It lays delicately in a box lined with blue velvet, alongside thin but sturdy looking metal frames. 

“It is that which carries many names. It can be mounted on these,” Thorin’s fingers gently trace the frames “to be a diadem, a broach, cloak clasp, or upon combs. I know you care not for crowns, and thought this way, you could at least carry it with you even if you do not like to wear it upon your head”

It’s so beautiful, and so clever, and so fitting as a courtship gift. Bilbo had been a bit daunted by the courtship process at first, and wary of the prescribed gifts, but Thorin has proven to be imaginative at finding clever ways to adapt the process whilst still conforming to it and skilled at executing them. The time and effort he’s expended; how Thorin had ever hidden his great soft heart behind his scowl and short temper Bilbo has no idea.

Day 6; June 9th: Erebor Never Fell | Flowers/Flower Language &  Regular Alternate Prompts: Meeting the Family

“So I heard you had a run in with Lobelia yesterday”

Bilbo sighs and continues refilling their teacups.

“I daresay it’s become rarer for me to have a day without having some kind of tiff with Lobelia, but yes. She was particularly vitriolic yesterday”

“She was running her mouth all day to anyone who would listen, too. I didn’t stay to hear what she was spewing this time”

“Oh, you should have. She’s in fine form. Did you know, I quite made my whole adventure up? Not only that, but I’ve fabricated all of my friends”

Prim gasps “She didn’t!”

“She most certainly did. She also reckons I’ve falsified my entire courtship - that I’ve slipped money under the table to Hal Knotwise in Bree and that I’ve been sending things to myself!”

His gaze travels to the bouquet Thorin had sent him - Bilbo has no notion of how Thorin has learned flower language quite so well as he’s certain there’s blooms there he’s never explained to him, but he’s outdone himself.

I found out Bagginshield week is a thing a week ago and I fell in love with June 10th’s prompt (Everybody Lives/Nobody Dies and Haunted House/Castle/Palace), so I just had to write something! Enjoy my very last minute contribution.

TITLE: The Ghosts of Dale

RATING: T (for innuendo and a fade to black love scene)
