@rainbowrowell i have been recently informed by @bookish-bogwitch that 1D's first concert was in Watford Colosseum in December of 2011, meaning it was 4th year for the gang and they were at ripe fanchild age. My theory is the whole gang went to this "cause its in Watford" and this was Baz's gay awakening and why Niall (Baz's friend Niall not the musician) changes his eye color. Thoughts? Opinions? Clarifications?

I need to know if this is canon. Its very important.

AWTWB Fan Illustrated Edition!!

Heyo! I’m back! With the final (for now) instalment of my makeshift illustrated editions. This one is for the third and my personal favorite book in the Simon Snow Series, Any Way the Wind Blow by the amazing @rainbowrowell!!

Just like last time if you’re tagged, your art is in it!

This is essentially me putting the art pieces to the lines in the book to show the beautiful words and the beautiful art at once.

DISCLAIMER!!! This time, I managed to find out my local library allows me to print pages of colored documents for only 10 cents (woot woot) so the image quality is much better. HOWEVER, if you don’t see an art piece you believe should be on there or have seen before or even made, it is not because I don’t like the art or artist, it’s because I simply missed it when finding art or forgot to put it on a page to print.

This was by far the hardest one to complete, it took a total of 6 and a half months to complete. Two months to find all the art, 3 to glue it all in, 1 month taking photos and labeling, and a half month putting it all in collages and creating the artist credits.

AND IT WAS WORTH IT!! it looks great and it’s amazing to see all the art next to their source material.

Just like the other two times, each piece has a number on it that correlates to the credit page

It’s Obnoxiously Loving Roo Hours!!

So, I often wax poetic about Roo and how much I adore them, and what a gift they have been in my life. They have talked me off countless ledges this year, kept me from quitting mid-year, proof read board statements, and made me laugh when I was on the verge of tears.

Roo is an incredibly talented individual who makes absolutely stunning art, while also crafting some of the best fics I have ever read. The way they weave effortless and hysterical banter, guild beautiful processing of emotions, and create safe and loving spaces for the characters to grow moves me every single time.

We often share song recs to each other, and they shared this wonderful, mournful piece called “Show Me The Place Where He Inserted The Blade” with the caption ITS SNOWBAZ YEARNING and the damage was done - and they were so, so right. So here’s a piece for them, inspired by that song!

One of the very first Snowbaz fics I read was their Sword of Mages Tattoo and in that fic, they heavily use floral language and symbolism to convey underlying messages, which I referenced here. The flowers are all symbolic of grief, mourning, healing, recovery, and perseverance. They give a message of hope and healing following trauma and loss.

The blood is ichor, symbolic of the wounds inflicted on them which shape them and, in turn, shape their relationship. Baz has the sword driven through his neck and heart for the loss of his humanity and his mother, and Simon is stabbed through his heart as well, due to the loss of loved ones, the newly discovered loss of his mother, the betrayal of his father, and his own struggle with mental illness.

Roo, I hope this does justice to that yearning the song portrays. You are such a delight and I am lucky to have formed such a wonderful friendship with🖤

playlist notes tag game

so @bloodiedpixie tagged me in this game, which is such a FUN IDEA—annotating playlists and going into what those certain songs mean in the playlist’s context. She did her playlists for Simon and Baz, and they’re both. so good. I can’t. excuse me while I go listen on repeat and be emo about them.

I couldn’t settle on any one playlist—I thought about my CO/WS/AWTWB playlists, but that’s so much lol. So at the risk of being annoying (because I am always annoying about my playlists lmao) I decided to pick a couple of songs from the playlists about my current fic WIPs to give yall a little peek into the process!

Under the cut for length because wow, talking about the music I write to is one of my favorite things ever and apparently I had a lot of things to say:

from Just a Spark

An Act of Kindness by Bastille

Kindness / is what you showed to me / it holds me til I ache / overflow and start to break

and now it follows me every day, every day, every day

This whole fic took a turn from what I originally intended it to be—Baz causing trouble and being very bad at it—but at its core, the premise has stayed the same. That premise being, if Simon and Baz had literally one (1) reason to be nice to each other, things would have gone a whoooole lot differently. This song is very snowbaz in that way, I think, and captures probably more Simon’s feelings than Baz’s, but both of them get a taste of it at some point in the fic: this person you have built so much of your identity on hating does something good for you, and that act of kindness absolutely haunting you, because it has shattered everything you were clinging to about them and yourself.

…and Thanks, I Hate It by Simple Creatures

Throw another penny in the fountain / leave my dead body on the side of a mountain / you bathe in the light of a trash fire / I see the stars in the eyes of a vampire

I don’t owe you anything / but I give you everything / watch you pile it up and say / “thanks, I hate it”

Fun fact about troublemaker!Baz fic is that when coming up with the idea for it, I actually dusted off an older WIP concept that was going nowhere. That story was going to be Simon-centric and fairly similar in premise—Simon starts seeing the Mage’s treatment of him for what it is, and getting really, really, really pissed off about it. There was also the idea of him having these realizations via punk rock music, which somehow Baz was responsible for (which is where the “Baz’s old iPod” thing in Just a Spark came from). This is the energy Simon has in JaS too—and bonus points for that line that so clearly references the canon magic-sharing scene in this context.

I’m terrified cause I’ve lost my fear of doubt / but the war is over now

So break me down, if it makes you feel all right / shake me off if it helps you sleep at night / hold me down in the river / take my breath away, take my breath away

I’ve said very little about this fic, because of course, it’s COBB! Secrets are part of the fun! But this song represents one of the very first clear scenes I had when outlining and beginning to write the fic. This is the moment where Simon realizes his feelings for Baz—the “war” between them is over, and Simon would let Baz do anything to him. It’s not a sad song, but it’s still kind of wistful, and there’s a beautiful part before the last chorus where the music swells that just perfectly captures what Simon’s feeling in that moment, that rush of “oh, I really like him and would do anything for him.” In the fic, though, that’s with an undercurrent of “he doesn’t feel the same way about me, but I can live with that if he’s happy.” Because owie.

…and Sky by Birds of Bellwoods

Oh God, can it be true? / why me, but more why you? / when did it fall apart, when did we change?

And I’m scared of the day I forget your face / hold on so tight but it still slips away / I keep searchin’ this hollow stone / for the youth I used to know

So I don’t want to give anything about this story away, but this song…oof. This song represents not what happens in the fic, but what so easily could happen—and what both Simon and Baz are living in fear of, in their own different ways. Primarily, this song is mostly about Baz’s inner thoughts, but this sense of premature regret lingers in the back of everything both of them do and every decision they make, good and bad. But this isn’t supposed to be a sad fic, yall. It’s not really a spoiler that they sort themselves out, because this is me the author we’re talking about, and I simply can’t bring myself to do that to them.

You may notice that both of those songs are very acoustic-y. This is intentional. It is, in fact, an integral part of the story. And that’s the only hint about this fic I’m giving you other than: prepare to have a lot of feelings. :)

This song has long wrecked me and the day I put it on this fic’s playlist I knew I’d absolutely ruined myself. Though I’ve got a little bit to go to stitch it to the rest of the fic, I’ve already written the big climax to the story—and I wrote it with this song on loop. This song makes me feel like I can break down walls, and it perfectly captures Simon in those final moments when he has to make some hard choices and, in true Chosen One fashion, go save the day.

…and Soji and Narek Waltz by Jeff Russo

Listen, I almost listed Hozier’s Arsonist’s Lullaby instead, because of course that song is on the playlist. And this one doesn’t even have words, because it’s an instrumental piece. But, yall, listen. Despite being from Star Trek, seemingly the polar opposite of my silly little medieval fic, this piece was pivotal to writing one of my two favorite scenes in the whole fic (Chapter 7, if you’ve been keeping up). The wonder of a cathedral full of stained glass, the mystery of the incense on the air. Falling in love and knowing you shouldn’t but perhaps it would be all right, just for a moment. And the knowledge that all saints had to be martyred first… really, it’s a beautiful piece. I highly recommend listening, especially while reading that scene.

I’ve posted excerpts from this fic before for tag games, but I’ve been waiting to actually finish it before posting. Well, that might be soon, so lets get into it. The premise here is: Simon is fine. He’s great! He’s living his best life in the city of Watford, with his guardian Davy (head of the Coven), and his best friend Agatha, and things are safe, and things are fine. The problem is that he’s started having some weird dreams lately. And he thinks maybe he knows the boy in his dreams…but that’s probably nothing to worry about. This song is about that dissonance between what he thinks he knows and what he’s forgetting; between the people he trusts, the people he should, and the people he shouldn’t.

…and Redecorate by Twenty One Pilots

(There was a wonderful structure to the city / and it put my cares to rest)

Tried looking at it from a new perspective / Flat on his back but he still heard the directive / Orders from that corner where that shadow always lived / Never asked permissions, he just hopes that they forgive

So I’ve probably mentioned before that the whole idea for this fic is really based on the story/lore behind Twenty One Pilot’s album Trench, which is why that band is all over this playlist. But I picked this song from the subsequent album instead of Trench for two reasons: one, it makes me feel absolutely feral when it comes on and I have to loop it like seven times, and two, it captures a really pivotal moment in the fic. It’s the moment where Simon is starting to feel like maybe something is terribly wrong, and he can’t figure out why, but he knows he needs to break out of the patterns he’s found himself in and go find some answers, even if he’s not going to like them. It’s the moment he decides to (dun dun dunnnn) leave the city, and it’s making that decision not because it’s the right choice, because he feels like he doesn’t have another one. (“I don’t wanna go like this…”)

(There’s also a whole verse in here that’s basically Lucy, but I’m not gonna go into that, because I’ll get even more emotional than I already am.)

Anyway—fully recommend listening to this one with headphones on or in the car or some way you can let it just wash over you. Then come yell at me about the emotions you’re feeling. Because same. And then go read my fic when it’s posted.

I’ve got no reason to be secretive about this fic, but COTTA posting is still a ways away, so let me have my fun a little longer. However, I will give you clues via these song choices! This fic is established relationship (though we flashback to their meeting and falling in love because I’m a sap and it’s for the ~drama~), and this song captures their feelings for each other perfectly. It’s the moment they’re slow-dancing in the kitchen, and things perhaps get a little too real, and they both decide, yeah, fuck it, I love you, let’s do this. Though I’ve picked this cover to match the vibes of the playlist, the original song itself is time-period accurate, because it was released three years before this fic takes place! First hint! Anyway, I think about this fic and when this song comes on, I get all emo, and now you can too.

…and Pancakes For Dinner by Lizzy McAlpine

I wanna eat pancakes for dinner / I wanna get stuck in your head / I wanna watch a T.V. show together / And when we're under the weather we can watch it in bed

Oh, and to tell you is too scary, so I'll just say something else / And I wish that you could hear me when I talk to myself / But this plane might not land safely / So, what the hell do I have to lose if I just tell you?

And then there’s this bitch (affectionate). This song already made me emo, but now I’ve associated it with this fic, and that’s only gotten worse. See, the whole premise of the fic is: Simon and Baz are in love, but because of the Historical Event™️ I have plopped them into, there is no guarantee they will ever see each other again. So. Yeah. There’s a lot of angst to be had, a lot of pining, a lot of determination because “no, I haven’t had enough time together with you yet, and I refuse to let this be the end.” A lot of potential for great grief to be had (though I will point out that said Historical Event™️ does in fact work out for the people involved, so trust me a little, okay?). The second hint is…uh, everything I just told you. And also that the line “this plane might not land safely” is not really a metaphor in this case. It’s, uh, quite literal.

If you think you’ve figured out what historical event I’m talking about, and it makes you go, “Korinne, you fucking DIDN’T,” then you’re almost certainly correct. Sorry! I promise it’s gonne be FINE!! REALLY!!!

And there you have it folks! A bunch of songs about a bunch of my WIPs. I make a playlist for all of my bigger projects (and some smaller ones tbh) because it’s a really helpful part of the process for me to connect lyrics and the emotions of music to the plot and scenes and themes that I’m writing. I hope this glimpse was interesting!
