A scrutiny on the impression left by Nightfall's remark across different translations in Mission 30.

Japanese Manga, Anime Narration

• "今の先輩はおままごとでふぬけています" (Ima no senpai ha omamagoto de funuketeimasu)

先輩 (せんぱい, senpai) - senior

おままごと (omamagoto) - playing house

In a direct (online) translation, the sentence can be assumed as "senpai is currently playing house". Though the context of "ふぬけ (funuke)" was not included into this assumption. Thus, a relevant context seemed to be left out.

English Translated Manga

• "Playing house has made you soft."

In comparison, the english translation had not helped with capturing the context of "ふぬけ (funuke)" due to the fact that there are no words from the japanese counterpart that corresponded to "soft". Thus, the impression intended for this part of the translation remained uncertain.

Anime's English Subtitle

• "You're currently so infatuated in playing house"

Unlike the English translated manga, the context of "infatuated" was added into the anime translation. Thus, the term "ふぬけ (funuke)" may be matched to the word "infatuated", making the more complete translation of the sentence as:

"Senpai is currently infatuated in playing house."

Note: The lack of confidence on the context behind the term "ふぬけ (funuke)" would be due to the fact that Japanese is not my first language, in addition to the few times when even the Kanji form of this term (腑抜け) had not helped to clarify the confusion. Though the usage of the term within the sentence's structure did indicate a more detailed context behind it.

Capturing the respectful view of Nightfall towards her senior, in the instance of the maintained "先輩 (senpai)" honorific in both her dialogue and monologue, it was almost unlikely for her to direct a sharp remark (as in the English translated manga) towards Twilight. And thus, following such character had I come to settle on the word "infatuated" as the meaning behind the term "ふぬけ (funuke)".

Extra: In the view of asian conversational context, blunt criticisms ("infatuated with playing house") are more commonly used than direct remarks ("playing house has made you soft"). Nightfall's approach may lean towards blunt criticisms.

In another round of scrutiny on the nickname given to Nightfall by Franky in regards of its words and meaning.

Japanese Manga

• 無愛想 (ぶあいそう, buaisou)

The word "無 (bu)" had contributed to the meaning of "lacking of", while "愛 (ai)" had referred to "love" and "想 (sou)" had meant "thought". The combinations of these characters bore two meanings:

無愛 (ぶあい, buai) - lack of love / feelings

無想 (ぶそう, busou) - lack of thought

Thus when combined, the term "無愛想 (buaisou)" meant "lacking of feelings and thoughts" or "emotionless".

• 無愛想なおねーちゃん (ぶあいそうなおねーちゃん, buaisouna oneechan)

The term "おねーちゃん (oneechan)" here was written or used in hiragana form instead of its kanji counterpart of "お姉ちゃん (oneechan)", where both meant "older sister". The usage of the hiragana form in this context may indicate an informal or playful intent in its usage by Franky towards Nightfall, since the former's age would be relatively older to the latter's. Thus the meaning of the full term would be "emotionless (older) sister".

• "Grumpy Lady"

As opposed to the japanese manga, the english translation of this term seemed to have captured the term's meaning inaccurately.

無愛想 (buaisou) had meant "emotionless" but instead of maintaining the neutrality of its meaning, the negative word "grumpy" was used in its stead.

おねーちゃん (oneechan) had meant "older sister" but was instead assumed into the word "lady", with the supposed joking intent of Franky calling a younger person (Nightfall) with an older position's term being lost to a rather formal substitution of "lady".

Note: Chapter 60 was a fun showcase of Nightfall and Franky's interactions in the case of a mission. While some may be pestered by the sensible distrust from Nightfall's side or the other half had even overread things in a rather "deep" manner, I personally found that Franky had earned Nightfall's trust by the end of the chapter and in return, Franky had regarded her as a slightly closer work acquaintance as judged from the siblings-like nickname he came up for her (instead of continuously and comically pursuing her in his personal romantic quest).

In a personal understanding on the asian conversational context, an older person would jokingly refer a younger person with older terms (such as older sister / older brother) in the case where the younger person acted in a more serious manner in certain situations that they may appear "older" through such actions. Thus, the interpretation of Franky's nickname to Nightfall after the mission.

An attempt on deciphering the message written on Tatsuya Endo's latest Spy×Family's 5th anniversary illustration. The message caught my attention for it's English-Japanese (romanised) hybrid that seemed to hold the author's real message.

Anna episode yah Conna episode gah iroiro alimasiter.

アニヤえぴそでやこんなえぴそでが色々ありました。

Aniya episode ya konna episode ga iroiro arimashita.

There were a lot of episodes like Anya's episode and this one.

At iumano 5years desitar.

あっ言うまので五年でした。

Atsu (expression) iu ma node go nen deshita.

Ah (expression) before I knew it, it had been 5 years.

Yuri and Nightfall parallels (feat. Anya's commentary).

Possessing loud thoughts that trigger an almost similar shocked reaction from Anya on their first encounters.

Instigating a comical excitement from Anya through their personal competitive goal.

And from such starking impressions had Anya referred to both Yuri and Nightfall as the reference to those who bear similar expressions as either one of them.

Note: Can't seem to tune down the anticipation (and growing suspicion on the unlikely delay) of seeing these two coming across one another in the (hopefully near) future especially after the rather close near encounter during Wheeler's Arc (with comparable direct parallels of the two).

• Observation and Deduction

Has a keen observation on their surroundings' details and came up with a logical reasoning behind the traces of mistakes left by their targets.

A continuous pursue to secure their target regardless of the risks ahead.

• Determination

An almost reflecting remarks made by the two when facing off their respective targets.

• All Out

Relied on their comrades' assistance (despite reluctantly) due to overreaching their physical limits.

• Crucial Advice (Post Wheeler's Arc)

Earning critical advices from concerned comrades from both sides.

Note: As compiled, it is noticeable that the parallels shared between Yuri and Nightfall weren't as direct as being shown in the same chapter but instead when viewed as a whole, the chain of actions that they took were indeed similar to one another's. I can't help but to point out the long due interception between these two throughout this series with this particular arc being the closest (almost) encounter between them.

And I can't be the only one noticing the possible double meaning behind Yuri's emphasis during Nightfall's clash with Wheeler (repeatedly mentioned by Nightfall, a shot of exiting the sewer, in the form of Twilight's disguise)? I believe it is something to be referred back to in the future.

A thorough comparison on the words used in Nightfall's introduction throughout different translations.

Japanese Manga, Anime Narration

• 毒婦 (どくふ, dokufu)

Literal translated as "poisonous woman". There are two variations of meaning that can be assumed from this term.

Evil - If taken directly, the combination of both words lead to someone possessing an outwardly evil intent towards others.

Selfish - If taken individually, the word "毒 (poison)" may refer to someone who possessed a poison-like characteristic towards others for their own sake. This context lean closer to being defensive of one's own right, or cared less of others' perspective.

• 冷血 (れいけつ, reiketsu)

Literal translated as "cold-blooded". As straightforward as it means, the separated words indicate "冷 (cold)" and "血 (blood)", making "merciless" a fitting synonym too.

• 鉄面皮 (てつめんぴ, tetsumenpi)

Literal translated as "iron-faced". Similar to "cold-blooded", the separated words for this term hold a direct meaning of "鉄 (iron)", "面皮 (face, expression)", in which could also be assumed as "emotionless".

English Translated Manga

• Ruthless

Defined as "having or showing no compassion to others", this word is closer in context to the "selfish" version of "毒婦 (poisonous woman)".

• Arrogant

Defined as "having an exagerrated sense of self importance or abilities", this word did not exactly match the neutrality of the term "冷血 (cold-blooded)" and instead biased towards the negative actions shown by a person.

• Icy

Defined as "unfriendly / unwelcoming", this word has a close meaning to the term "鉄面皮 (iron-faced)" due to both words' emphasis on an emotionless person.

Anime's English Subtitle

• Wicked

Defined as "morally wrong", this word adapted the "evil" variation of "毒婦 (poisonous woman)" due to its negative nature. Opposing the "selfish" variation of this word, "wicked" may be used to indicate someone being naturally ill-intended.

• Cold-blooded

This term matches well with its japanese counterpart of "冷血 (cold-blooded)", meaning lack of care or "merciless".

• Impudent

Defined as "not showing due respect for another person", with synonyms like "insolent" and "shameless". This word seemed to hit far off from the supposed intended translation for "鉄面皮 (iron-faced)". In great contrast to "impudent", "iron-faced" hold on a neutral meaning of someone being "emotionless" instead of being disrespectful.

Note: The inconsistencies that I met during cross-referencing between the manga versions and anime translations (including the words spoken there) for this part had ignited my need to find out the intended meaning for the three words used to describe Nightfall from her colleagues' perspective. Since it is an introduction to her, it feels crucial to find out the ground truth of those words and thus, I had come to settle with assuming the japanese manga's description as the verified version (the three words spoken in the anime matched those of japanese manga as well).

Once the real words from the japanese manga are ascertained, it surprises me further as to how two of the english-translated subtitles had been off-meaning, namely "wicked" and "impudent". Having an understanding on the asian context of referring someone as "poisonous", as intended in "毒婦 (poisonous woman)", the word "poison" is typically used in the context of someone being "selfish" (through actions that may be labelled as "inconsiderate" when it comes to standing for their own rights regardless of the others' perspectives) instead of "ill-intended". Thus, I had come to conclude that "ruthless" as the more suitable translation to this word. "Impudent", on the other hand, had been poorly translated from the actual meaning for "鉄面皮 (iron-faced)". Bearing almost non-overlapping definitions, "iron-faced" had meant someone who had the face akin to an iron, as in being "emotionless".

While nothing can be done to repair the actual meaning lost across translations, I find it important to address inaccuracies (like this) for it may drag a character into a false impression, especially during the introductory phase.

Addressing the stereotypical scrutiny received by Nightfall from WISE agents.

"Ruthless", "arrogant", and "icy"

In contrast to most female characters in Spy×Family, Nightfall is known to portray the least facial expression and the contributor to this was none other than Twilight's advice of burying one's emotions deep due to their line of work. From her accustomed expressionlessness and little words, most would be quick to assume the lack or absence of humanity from her nature that thus led to the growing assumption of Nightfall being a "ruthless", "arrogant", and "icy" person. And all that had been rooted from her more silent and reserved nature in comparison to what was deemed "normal" and "acceptable" in a stereotypically viewed community.

Under the influence of Twilight

The feelings that run deep towards Twilight had caused most to view Nightfall's actions from the perspective of desperately reaching out for attention. While appearing as exagerrated as one might conclude all too quickly, her support towards Twilight's vision of achieving peace had enabled her to work tirelessly and meticulously towards the same goal of aiming for the greater good.

Selfish Allegations

These claims were baseless in the beginning and later proved to be completely false through the revelation of Nightfall's thought process. Instead of only recovering the stolen files as ordered, Nightfall had insisted to capture Wheeler out of the concern where he may have memorised all the intel and still posed as a danger to WISE.

Prone to backstab

The backstabbing allegation, too, was denied through Nightfall's view on the said matter when facing off Wheeler in a debate of distrust. While most might once again relate all this to her feelings towards Twilight, it would have been more reasonable to view this as a sense of protectiveness one would naturally possess when faced with a situation as dire as this.

Note: Putting myself into the context of a world like theirs, I don't find hiding my own emotions (even to the state of sealing them off from the surface) as a disadvantage, for every step taken exposes more danger than the previous and allowing internal turmoil to stagger your cool will only lead you to your own downfall. Securing your own stability would be the first step to your own safety.

Reliance and trust had been another crucial matter that had to be considered carefully. Tasked with threading the enemy's line for the sake of peace, one could hardly rely on anyone on behalf of their own safety or livelihood without opening the risk of being betrayed. Fitting this into Nightfall's perspective, the utter faith she had on Twilight had further dedicated her to push for more improvements all so that she could be a reliable comrade when the urgent time comes.

And that concludes the (quite) brief analysis and justification behind what appear to most as a rather out of stereotypical nature on Nightfall.

Breaking the fourth wall (looking forward) due to being able to see through Twilight's panic escape (noticing his footstep) and bear a constant yet pointed suspicion on Loid (bullet wound).

Stood on the same side as the rest of SSS agents.

Eyes focused on his own side (the East) to portray SSS' nature of overlooking the safety of within Ostania.

Stood on the watchtower overlooking the left opposing side to observe the East's movements.

Positions' Significance

Agents that are actively assigned to site surveillances / spying tasks are all positioned on the ground (standing / crouching).

Agents that are less active are positioned on higher levels (atop of wall / watchtower).
