You guys don’t know (or maybe you do) how hyped I was getting this particular issue of SB in the mail lol. Inside was Hachi’s hookup with Takumi (yikes) but a very exciting part nonetheless. I actually started my subscription after book 4 was released, but I imagine Ren and Nana’s reunion would’ve also had me excited.

Hello,

I’m collecting information on otome games and the fandoms that compose them as I research for a video-format journalism project! Please consider re-blogging this post and answering the following questions (you can also fill out this google form) ! I’d appreciate any, even partial responses!

1. When did you first encounter otome/ visual novels and what was your first impression of the genre?

2. If different from now, how has your opinion of the genre evolved over time?

3. What games have you played/ which have made a lasting impact?

4. What are the qualities of a good game?

My happy-ending head cannon:

Lys goes back to the farm after graduation for a much needed break. He does not expect Candy to follow and supports her prioritizing her education (she goes to a local uni and affords rent by splitting rent with Alexy). It’s hard to keep long distance, but Candy understands that he must prioritize his healing after his accident and that he needs to help at home. Lys helps his mother sell off most of the farm (save the house and a bit of land to raise rabbits) and set up her retirement plan. He support her emotionally after his father’s death. After a year and a half, he enters uni. He has a dream to follow after all. The distance has made his and Candy’s love grow fonder not weaker. They visit his mother regularly, and she lives for many more years. Leigh also takes on a good portion of responsibility at home in order to give his brother a chance to succeed.

Lys never falls out of touch with Castiel. Castiel even visits the farm a few times in order to have music writing sessions with Lys. Eventually, he becomes a full time member of Castiel’s band as a song writer and singer.

Likewise, Candy values her closest friendships and holds on dearly to Alexy and Rosa. Acquaintances, however, come and go. It’s hard to keep in touch with all our friends, but when Candy runs into them, they greet each other warmly.

While I hate what's happened to the boys in the university life beta (r.i.p. Lys..) I feel like the true heartbreak is the fact that Candy has abandoned her best friends. I mean, people grow apart but the way all of Candy's close relationships were purged in the short year falling her move felt so.. unnatural and mentally draining to process. I know these are just game characters, but the one thing I've loved about mcl (and otome games in general) over the years) is how immersive it is. You can't build a game platform that requires you to step into an imagined life and be expected to not grieve the terrible events that may happen in said imagined space. Candy's break from Alexy and Rosa was especially devastating considering how close friendships operate differently than romantic relationships and can usually stand the test of time and distance. Cutting everyone off just seemed like overkill.
