Angel’s redemption arc doesn’t work? It isn’t earned? Why are we being dishonest on Jenny Calendar’s internet?

Angel suffers, all he does is suffer. He is a 240+ vampire who had a conscience forced on him after earning the reputation as the worst kind of vampire. And he was so horrified by what he had done he decided to hide away from society.

I can’t imagine being Angelus, all proud and murdery then lowering myself to feed off rats. I would be disgusted and my pride would never recover.

Angel tries to be better by helping Buffy out. And she teaches him about being a better person and preserving despite the odds stacked against him. It’s a lesson he carries over to AtS.

He still struggles to be a better person. He helps people out and he has the possible reward of becoming mortal again. But because life is never simple obstacles get thrown at him. His first friend in his entire existence dies then he protects Faith from Buffy. That had to have been an insane clash of emotions because on one hand he is doing what he thinks is right and on the other hand it’s Buffy. He hasn’t even gone against her like that before. The important point is he takes a stance and does what he believes in.

And slowly he builds his own family. Cordelia, Wesley, Gunn and Fred. He creates his own support structure. The man in Welcome to the Hellmouth couldn’t possibly dream of that. He couldn’t even get himself to help (fight)Buffy stop the Harvest when that was his whole point of being in Sunnydale.

Then he loses his son and when Connor comes back he was raised to hate him. I can’t even imagine the suffering. To have your child taken away and the joy of finally having them back only for them to think you are the scum of the earth. Then loses Connor again and creates all new timelines in order to have him alive. Angel as a person never stops suffering.

But he earns his redemption. It’s a bit like sobriety once you are an addict you always struggle to stay sober and Angel definitely gives into the temptation such as when he locked Darla and Drusilla in the Wolfram & Hart offices and when he tried to kill Wesley (I sponsor this message though. Wesley was dead wrong for what he did).

But the important thing is he realises that he needs his support structure and his actions are wrong and he tries to do better. Redemption isn’t a singular event. It’s a series of tiny things a person chooses to do over and over or at least that’s how I see it.

So yeah his redemption arc does work. The lore on souls is so messed up but Angel in Lie to Me says I did unconscionable things. He doesn’t say Angelus. He says I which means soulless Angel’s actions are ensouled Angel’s actions. It’s why he craves atonement. Not Fade Away ends with him about to sacrifice his life because honestly a dragon? The odds were stacked against them.

Angel goes from being a self hating coward to a less self hating hero who lets people in. It doesn’t erase the heinous shit he did before his curse but he makes up for it. His redemption is earned.

Just got to season 6 of my btvs rewatch and I just want to say that the sp*ffy sex scenes are so much more rancid and depressing than I remember. I feel like I want to claw my skin off watching them, I’m so disgusted. There is nothing hot about this and there’s so much of it, like was all of this necessary?! WE GET IT, THEY’RE FUCKING.
