i think part of the problem w media criticism on here is sometimes people have a hard time understanding that not every story is a 1:1 with how you should go about criticism. like, an evil queen getting redeemed in a princess movie for toddlers would be very different from a dictator getting redeemed in a dystopian novel. those things do not require the same amount of engagement about the implications of such an action, and they mean different things for the story. and there are certainly things in between too, this isnt a “one extreme or the other” situation

DC comics culture is watching fifteen thousand different versions of Batman’s parents’ murders and his subsequent gritty and dark descent into vigilantism when all you want is fifteen minutes of him interacting with his seven and a half adopted children in an even vaguely healthy way

I still think it’s hilarious that the reason nobody ever figures out Superman’s secret identity or where he lives or what he does when he’s not saving the planet, is because he already told them all the Kryptonian stuff that can’t be tied to any of his human friends or family. I guarantee you the in-universe wikipedia article on Superman lists his name as Kal-El and the “personal life” section says that he lives full-time at his private fortress of solitude at the north pole. Nobody in the world looks at Clark Kent and thinks “oh my god, maybe he’s superman!” for the same reason nobody ever starts to suspect that their coworker who looks KINDA like Barack Obama is actually secretly Barack Obama – They know who Barack Obama is and know what he does and they know their coworker Greg is Greg and not Barack Obama. They have no reason to assume Barack Obama secretly moonlights as Greg The IT Guy at their workplace even though they’ve never seen Greg and Obama in the same place. At best, “Greg is secretly Obama” would be a running joke at the office, and the same is true at the Daily Planet. “Kal-El of Krypton, who lives in a CRYSTAL PALACE at the NORTH POLE and whose dayjob is SUPERMAN, sometimes puts on a suit and pretends to be a clumsy reporter and lives in a one-bedroom walkup in Metropolis” is a ridiculous concept to anyone who doesn’t already know it’s true

So, I’ve been pulled over a few times in my life. Not many, but a few. And I’ve also been in a couple of cars that got pulled over. And let me tell you, if you were actually doing something wrong, the officer doesn’t make any small talk, just straight into “I clocked you doing 70 in a 55.” The only time I’ve ever gotten the “do you know why I pulled you over?” was the time when I wasn’t doing anything wrong, and I got let go even though he insisted to the end that I was doing 87 in a 70 (white privilege at work).

“Do you know why I pulled you over?” is a trap. It means there’s a good chance the officer doesn’t actually have a good reason to ticket you, and is trying to get you to waive your 5th Amendment rights and incriminate yourself. If you make a guess, that’s a confession of guilt.

But there’s another trap, that I’ve heard of but haven’t yet experienced. It’s “do you know how fast you were going?” With that one, they’re hoping you’ll say no, because then they can name whatever speed they want – you just said you didn’t know how fast you were going, if you deny the speed they name then you’re lying to them.

Thank you! That’s been my favorite part of the book so far. They’re letting me do most anything I want in that respect and it’s been a hell of a lot of fun. It’s already dwarfed the amount of design work I did for Future Quest, which was huge.

'Get Your Wish’ is about finding a reason to keep moving forward, even if it’s not for your own sake. I was doing really badly in 2015, 2016 and 2017. My entire life revolved around making music, but for the first time in my life, I was struggling to make anything at all. I was desperate to make something I was proud of, but the more I struggled, the worse the problem became. I was very seriously depressed and genuinely thought my life as I knew it was over. It was about three years of trying to write music, failing, and being crushed by it every single day. There were times when I wondered if it was pointless for me to keep trying. I didn’t even know what I was hoping for. If I had come this far and I was still dissatisfied and unhappy, then it was impossible not to ask, 'Even if I do finish new music, what am I hoping is gonna happen? What is it I want that I don’t currently have? Am I gonna be happy then? Why am I not happy now?”’ I felt like I had no options - because while the prospect of struggling indefinitely was terrifying, the thought of quitting music was much worse. For a very long time, I didn’t know what the answer was. I knew that no level of achievement was going to make me happy, but I still felt a life-definingly strong urge to keep doing creative work. But gradually, I came to realize what the point is for me. You know how every once in a while, when you’re driving or something, the music you’re listening to just moves you in this amazing, transcendent way? It’s this sublime experience that can’t really be described, but for me it’s like this: I feel like the world is beautiful and filled with possibility, and that I want to cherish every second that I have to be alive. That description doesn’t quite capture it, but it’s as close as I can get. I have this experience every once in a while when I’m listening to my favorite artists. I feel overwhelmed with gratitude that they do what they do.
