i have attempted several times to start a puppet tutorial now but it is nigh impossible for me to narrate what i'm doing as i'm doing it because my workflow is wack and my brain can't handle this form of multitasking so my attempt to save time by not having to do a voice-over in post has failed. i'm gonna have to do a voiceover anyway

you know now that i think of it i DID consider pitching an animated adaptation of wolf 359 at work, but i had already pitched two (rejected) adaptations at that point, and i really wanted to focus on my own projects for once (putting together a pitch takes a LOT of work and practice and stress esp if you hate waiting and being in meetings), and i just wasn't sure how you could fit wolf 359 into a tv series structure. the gift of podcasts is that it can be anything you want, any format you want. the first half of season 1 is just haha fun times that have little plot relevance, and yet if they were cut in favour of The Plot i feel like the show would lose part of its soul.

ooh small story about this actually!

in the original plans, i had the gun appear in eris's hand and she offers it to lovelace (which was what i was picturing when i listened to the podcast).

but i was worried it wouldn't read as "lovelace has to shoot eris" and more like "lovelace has to shoot herself" or even initially, "eris has to shoot lovelace." even when i changed it to have the gun appear in lovelace's hand, it still didn't read quite right.

i know that just a few lines later, we get the clarification that lovelace has to shoot eris to terminate the program, but i feel like that's something that only works really well in a podcast, because one of the quirks of an aural medium is that you can delay information.

think the scene when minkowski walks (floats?) in on eiffel and dr. hilbert and is clearly exasperated, but it isn't until like half a minute later that we find out she's annoyed because eiffel and hilbert are both butt naked. or the scene when the star turns blue, and it takes a few horrified back and forths between eiffel and minkowski before we learn what happened.

it's the same kind of principle for the lovelace/eris scene, in my mind. in an aural medium, you inherently understand that you won't get all the specifics right away, and you have to wait for the characters to audibly describe what just happened.

but in a visual medium, the rules kind of change. what you show on screen is what you want the viewers to know immediately. and when the gun appears, you might go "wait, hold on, who has to get shot?" and when lovelace says "i have to shoot you?" you might go "what makes her think that?" the difference here is that we now can physically see the same thing as lovelace, and there isn't much visual indication as to what exactly she needs to do.

it's a very small concern, really. if the audience is patient enough, they'll get the answer a few lines of dialogue later. BUT, i just wanted it to be abundantly clear right away: it's lovelace who has to shoot eris.

and that's the reasoning behind why the gun appears in lovelace's hand and is immediately aimed at eris!

i've had this idea in my mind for years, and it took this long to finally have the skill and time to accomplish it. wolf 359 is forever ingrained in my uni rushing homework at 2am memories and it has such such such a special place in my heart. i taught myself quite a bit to make this video: rigging a harmony puppet, lighting effects, render settings (seriously, why are rendering settings such a hassle). anyway, i hope you like the video as much as i love wolf 359 and eris and lovelace! mwah!!
