Why a group order manager?
Tumblr media

While being in quarantine, there was not much I could do. I did not have a job and I was constantly dreading boredom stuck in my house. There were options to go outside, but there really wasn’t much to do than just work out.
It was one day while working out that I decided that I want to try being a group order manager. While I had no prior experience, I did know people who have hosted group orders. From asking questions to getting forms and websites, I started to become a group order manager.
I also wanted to learn more about international buying and how that works from a US citizen perspective. I even went through and got a Korean address to have cheaper and accessible resources for getting merchandise. The most common issue I ran into was translation issues on certain websites and how to use them to their advantage.

My Top Stores for Group Orders

Since being a group order manager, I have browsed around multiple sites to find what is best for buyers, while offering benefits that people may be interested in. K-pop is different than US pop in that there is an emphasis on merchandising and how to get people’s attention with certain merch items like physical albums, photo books, mini photos, postcards, etc.
South Korea, especially, puts a high value on these items to get people on board to support a group. Sites like Ktown4u, withdrama, and Mercari Japan, are some of the sites I have experienced with getting albums from.
Group order managers are constantly looking at these kinds of online stores to purchase albums that benefit the artist and the fans. We bulk buy to save money and to help sort through the random benefits within the album. It can be pretty entertaining going through and seeing what each group can offer with their album.

U.S Merchandising vs. International Merchandising
youtube
The Economics of K-pop on YouTube, posted on November 8, 2019 by PolyMatter
International markets are more different, placing a big emphasis on physical merchandising rather than digital releases to generate more profit. Group order managers work to promote these physical releases by their favorite group. In a way, we act as promoters to get more international fans on board with K-pop releases.
I have been a joiner of group orders before becoming an actual group order manager. We tend to go towards these orders to fulfill the need of getting their favorite group’s album.
American artists see more success in their digital releases, meaning they don't rely too much on physical releases. The usual physical release is a jewel case with a cd, keeping it sleek and minimal. Kpop groups tend to go bigger, including random items and photobooks to give a more rounded experience for the fan. According to the video by PolyMatter, the country [South Korea] gets $5 for every $1 it spends on K-pop.

While starting, there is a lot of planning that goes out into group orders. There are forms, spreadsheets, packing materials, payment transfers, payment collections that envelop into this hobby that exists today. Group order managers are the middle man between a supplier and the consumer. We make sure to eliminate extra costs and time by organizing these orders for people who are in the same boat. These kinds of group orders exist for South Korean and Japanese goods. Group order managers are typically K-pop fans who collect for a certain artist or group and want to help out other fans of the same artist or group. I love to host group orders to help others who collect K-pop merchandise, as it can be a lot of money to spend at one time. Group orders can be seen as “bulk-buying” since we tend to buy many items at once.
Check out this video that I watched that inspired me to start group orders!

A Group Order Manager is born!
Welcome to Group Order Galore!

I’m Sebastian, and I will be sharing my experiences in being a group order manager (GOM) and going in-depth about what it is, and express how important these managers are.
Starting in June 2020, I decided to start opening up as a Group Order Manager, wanting to experience the thrill of shopping overseas and providing help to collectors like myself. I usually do orders coming from South Korea and Japan, at the moment, and use varying websites.
Being a GOM is different than a regular individual shopper. Typically, we shop a pretty simple way for everyday items. We can go to the local store with no worry about not finding our products. However, international shopping is different, as there are wait times from delivery and different time zones. What I do is act as the middle man, to help those who want their items and be able to secure them and get them for a lower price and send it to those who are participants within the order.
