And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.“ - Daniel 6:3 *************************** The key to Daniel's splendid fidelity may be found in the statement of my text, repeated in other parts of the book, "an EXCELLENT SPIRIT was in him." This statement literally means that in Daniel SPIRIT predominated, was uppermost, and was enthroned. We are accustomed to use the word "excellent" with other values and intentions, all of which may be right in certain connections. For instance, we say "excellent" means fine, noble, admirable. Yet the etymology of the word has another signification. Excellent is something that “excels, goes beyond, predominates”, and the word lying beyond this word excellent carries exactly that meaning. We may with perfect accuracy, read our text thus — it would not be rhythmic or admirable as a translation, but it would at least be accurate — "A spirit that excelled was in him" a spirit that jutted out was in him. Not flesh, but spirit was the chief thing. This is evident at the very beginning of the book of Daniel. Unfortunately, I guess that’s how many people see it. “There are many ways to heaven, and Jesus is just one of those ways.” Yet, He makes this disclaimer, “I am the Way, The Truth, and the Life, NO ONE comes to the Father except by Me. John 14:6. This is to say, Jesus is the only Shepherd worth following, all others are hirelings (there for hire and for money.) He is the ONLY door, and it is He who has the Keys of death and the grave within His power and in His possession. The pulsating heartbeat and jugular vein of human empowerment and modern day rational thought is the exaltation and deification of Self. This was the first lie ever told to mankind, and the perpetual lie which has been embraced by men ever since. This was a lie in the beginning and despite the thousands of years which have elapsed since its introduction to rational thought, men still believe it, and still live by it. It’s not very good for self-esteem, self-awareness, or self-worth to painfully and humbly admit that we were made from molecules of dirt. But, at least, some rappers will unconsciously concede to this truth in their lyrics, ironically Jay Z was one of them, “Came FROM THE DIRT, I emerged from it all without a stain on my shirt; you can blame my OLD EARTH for the *** SHE instilled in me, still with me, PAIN plus WORK.” Ironically, he conveniently borrows these fixed timeless truths from scripture. This is where religion and science amicably agree, there’s no dispute with truth as documented in history. The maxim “Ashes to ashes and dust to dust” further reinforces this timeless biblical truth. Yet, New Age ideology tells us to “look within ourselves” for the truth. 🤦🏽♂️ The Self-Made man was FIRST made by God in an existential sense before he made himself in any other temporal sense. On this single point modern man has erred since Adam. Only in conversion do we TRULY get to “know thyself” as our views are radically changed to embrace timeless unchangeable truth, not relative fluctuations of truth contrived by fallible men who measure truth by themselves, using such language, “Speak YOUR truth.” This is the prevailing sentiment of modern day culture. In order for a lie to have merit, you must FIRST minimize, trivialize and THEN absolute DENY the Truth. 🤷🏾♂️

There will NEVER be a more worthy rival to The Love Of Christ, which HE GIVES to the believer and which by faith, we reciprocate and exercise as feeble as it may be. As for the common man, including the most devoutly religious, this is NOT their experience, and for this reason they can’t understand why the Christian is so enamored by Jesus Christ. No amount of sermons preached to them can bring them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, because Judas heard them all! He heard the words of life flowing from the lips of The Prince Of Life, yet his hardened heart was never softened. Acts 3:15. He saw all the miracles which Jesus did before him, and STILL was not convinced. He was in the immediate presence of Christ, day and night, and STILL was NEVER inclined to believe His word. His heart, and his affections were fixed on temporal wealth and personal comfort; he was the treasurer in whose care the money was faithfully entrusted.

Judas betrayed Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver, which would be today’s equivalent of between $185 - $216, such a meager recompense, even as Esau before him despised his birthright for a single meal, “Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” Genesis 25:32. He was more preoccupied with temporal wants, as the Apostle Paul wrote of the those who forfeit their initial profession of faith in Christ to return to the world, “For MANY, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with MINDS set on EARTHLY things.” Philippians 3:18-19. Judas valued temporal wealth more than Christ, that’s why it was so easy to betray Him with a kiss. Luke 22:47-48.

The Child Of God, not one preoccupied with religion, but the one who intimately and experientially knows Christ is “a gift of the Father” to The Son. Note the words of Jesus for more understanding. “I have revealed Your name TO THOSE You have GIVEN ME OUT OF THE WORLD. They were Yours; YOU GAVE THEM TO ME, and they have KEPT YOUR WORD.” John 17:6. Can Jesus speak any more plainly? This fanciful notion of a person “choosing Christ” is found NOWHERE in scripture, in fact it is a foreign concept. No man can come to Me, unless the Father (who sent Me) draw him. John 6:44. This rule has NO exception!

If we have any genuine affection for Christ it’s because the Father has instilled in us such affections by The Holy Spirit, and this is usually the tell tale sign of The New Birth, without which NO ONE, shall enter the Kingdom Of Heaven. John 3:3. The believer is espoused to Christ in a real, spiritual and experiential way, that’s why we “talk about Jesus so much”, think about Him constantly, and strive to obey that which He has revealed in His word. These concepts are utterly foreign to the experience of natural, fallen men, as much as a blind man appreciating the beauty of a sunset. He may feel the warmth of the sun, but NEVER it’s grandeur. The common man at best will feel the conviction of Christ through the word, but will never deem Him beautiful enough to embrace. Isaiah 53:2. The sheep 🐑 will internally and externally hear the voice of The Good Shepherd specifically calling them, the #G.O.A.T.s, will not because they are more preoccupied with being great in this life, not the next.

Fixing Our Eyes On Christ:
Modern day Christianity is self-exalting, self-consumed, and self-preoccupied; it’s all about us, how we are doing, how we are feeling, what we are doing, what we have accomplished, and for all these reasons we are oftentimes left dry, dejected, discouraged, and disillusioned. Redemption is all about God, all about Christ, and all about the Holy Spirit.

Salvation is all about God, because He is the Author of it. It’s all about Christ because He has fulfilled all of the conditions requisite to make redemption certain, and it’s all about the Holy Spirit who makes it effectual. We are just the beneficiaries of grace; nothing more and nothing less. We are the objects of God’s love; nothing more and nothing less. We are the privileged recipients of His mercy; nothing more and nothing less. To be consumed and preoccupied with ourselves is contrary to the Gospel, because we are admonished to fix our gaze upon Christ and not on ourselves.

When Peter fixed his gaze upon Christ He was able to walk on water with Him, yet when he looked at the waves and trusted in himself he sank. There’s much to glean from this biblical account found in Matthew 14:22-33. When Moses was on the mountain in the immediate presence of God, speaking with Him face to face, his face was said to be supernaturally illuminated, in like manner we must gaze upon Christ. Exodus 34:29-35. “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18. We don’t have the special privilege of going upon the mountain as Moses did, we gaze upon Christ as we read the scriptures; that’s where we see His glory unveiled.

As holiness is the greatest of all divine attributes, by which God sets Himself apart as unique from creature and creation, so His love is the most treasured and endeared emotion and character trait to the Child Of God. Yet, this love is confined and hedged in within the eternal boundaries of holiness, from which He will neither deviate nor transgress. For this reason, Christ hates ALL who do iniquity and loves ALL those who hunger and thirst after righteousness. Matthew 5:6. “You have LOVED righteousness and HATED wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has Anointed You with the oil of joy above Your companions.” Psalm 45:7. “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, you who PRACTICE lawlessness” [a lifestyle and practice of breaking The Moral Law.] Matthew 7:23.

Love is the divinely endowed communicable attribute and emotion which we all share from one source. Yet, the love of God is the purest version and most concentrated form of love, which He sheds abroad within every redeemed heart by the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:5. In comparison to the Love Of God, The love in the world is shallow, superficial, transient, conditional, earned and merited, but the love of Christ is unmerited and undeserved; in fact it is liberally distributed to the Christian by God Himself.

The Christian ought to be known and characterized by love. “For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.” 1 John 3:11-12. A new commandment I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this EVERYONE WILL KNOW that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35.

Now, how is this love practically displayed? In scripture, love is explained and described with adjectives, not as an emotion or a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. Biblical love has nothing to do with butterflies in the stomach. Love is displayed by PATIENCE under the most inconvenient situations, KINDNESS extended toward the most undeserving, a trust devoid of suspicion, and a HUMILITY willing to form an accurate assessment of ourselves and others. Romans 12:3.

This love is of divine origin and DOES NOT dishonor others, is NOT self-consumed, NOT self-seeking, and NOT easily angered. The love of God is unlike the love of men; our love is fallen, flawed, temporal and a derivative version of divine love. Human love is principally emotional, conditional and often attributed to how one feels over against what one does this is the great divide between human love and divine love.

In love, God redeems the sinner from eternal perdition, that is God’s highest expression of love towards a sinner which is duplicated in no other religion and practically expressed in no other principle but that which we see in The Gospel. John 3:16 is the most direct proof text in ALL of the Bible conveying and practically displaying the love of God in all its inexplicable majesty and breathtaking splendor. “For GOD, so LOVED the world that He GAVE His one and only, unique, preeminent Son, that whosoever in ALL OF fallen HUMANITY, would believe in, trust in, and set their eternal hope ON HIM (and not in themselves or their own merit) THESE and ONLY these will NEVER PERISH but be the privileged beneficiaries and recipients of everlasting life.” That’s the flavor, meaning, and sentiment of John 3:16.

God loved humanity, and redeemed a remnant from fallen humanity “FOR HIMSELF”, not “just to get into heaven” in and through His Son, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His sovereign mercy established and predetermined by Himself. Psalm 4:3; Romans 8:29; Titus 3:4-5. The prophet Jonah and King David had it right - “Salvation is of the Lord, your blessing will be upon your people.” Jonah 2:9; Psalm 3:8.

This divine love wakes the sinner up every morning, keeping them out of hell. All who are not in Christ, are not in God’s good graces redemptively as they might suppose according to John 3:36. “The one [presently and actively] believing in the Son HAS eternal life, but the one not [presently, actively, and continually] obeying the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides [remains] on him." A person may easily say, “God’s got my back. I believe in God, or God knows I’m a good person; He loves me, yet only in the latter phrase will scripture agree in this sense, “God loves the sinner by keeping them alive, sustaining them long enough to hear, affirmatively respond to and embrace Christ in genuine faith and heartfelt obedience while they live, but after they pass on from this life to the next His love will tragically and traumatically come to an abrupt end as they go into judgement.”

God loves His Son. To many this sentence will appear to be quite ambiguous, but I only quote scripture, in fact this phrase comes from the lips of Christ Himself, listen. “For The Father LOVES THE SON and He shows Him EVERYTHING He does; greater deeds than these HE WILL SHOW HIM, that you may be astonished.” John 5:20. For all who doubt the triune nature of the godhead, you will not be able to understand this verse nor make any sense of it.

The love of the Father to the Son, which existed from eternity past before the worlds were framed, is the very foundation of EVERY expression of love displayed and manifested throughout humanity. That love is the root of redemption, and the fruit of our salvation. Only the redeemed, the recipients of The Love Of God, can unconditionally love enemies, pray for those who maltreat and malign them, with the same passion that the unconverted love, esteem, and care for family, friends, and acquaintances on a conditional basis. In unbelief and a greater love for a fallen, transient world, a person lamentably forfeits and disqualifies themselves for an eternally, effervescent consumption of the Love Of God. It’s simply madness to the most exponentiated degree. The Love Of God, in its greatest concentration will ONLY be joyously experienced and richly enjoyed by the Child Of God - forever!

God doesn’t care, He’s too busy ordering and sustaining the universe. Nope! Wrong again. He knows when a sparrow falls to its death. He’s mindful of every hair upon our heads in such a manner that he knows it’s exact number. He calls ever single star by name. All these things He does in real time simultaneously multitasking the universe in masterful precision. He knows everything, everyone, every deed, and every other motive before every act is performed; He even knows about the temptation which draws us to sin.
