casually write something in the fic, e.g. a character says that they spent the first six months of training living in the flight simulator

“wait, how long does fighter pilot training take, anyway”

google it but click on a not-quite-relevant result

“ooh, there’s an air force aptitude test”

“...i bet i can find an online version”

get horrendously low scores

🔴 flip out and do more aviation research instead of actually writing the fic

realize i never got my original question answered

Happy birthday, Lyle!

Hope you’re having fun at the academy. I was gonna get you a present but Mom said you wouldn’t be able to make it back to celebrate at home this year, so I came up with something better.

I’ve been poking around on the GWW a lot because of history class lately, and after I did a little of my own “research,” I’ve decided I’m gonna join the service too. Well, I don’t think I have what it takes to be a Helldiver like you, but you guys need all the air support you can get, so I’m going to be a pilot and I’ll eat my frickin’ shoes if I don’t graduate at the top of my class and get myself assigned to your unit. I know I’m a few years behind you though, so you’ll just have to make do with someone else until I finish flight school :P

Next time you get leave, let’s go camping at Blue Iron Bluffs again! Miss you a lot.

from semi-randomly browsing military unit wikipedia pages and generally doing way too much procrastination research, it looks like the smallest (american) infantry unit that gets its own unique name/insignia is a battalion. the sun dogs are a unit of 4 (5 if you count air support?), which technically makes them only a fireteam...

but itsk, maybe super earth glorifies its military so much that even fireteams can have their own insignia if they want one. 👌

learned how to use pen tool in the process, yeehaw. made with photoshop cs2 (don’t laugh, it was free!) and many, many hours that i could have used to spread managed democracy instead.

Following a devastating defeat in the Galactic War and the destruction of Super Earth, what remained of humanity fled to the stars to seek a new planet and rebuild. All Aurora “Nomad” Locson has left is her fighter jet, the squad of boisterous Helldiver soldiers she flies support for, and the command vessel that all of them are forced to call home.
