Finding my favourite writer from my old bookshelf. Maybe I will find my old self back who used to read books even though she had homework and stressful academics in high school.

November 29, 2020 | Sunday
This year has been quite crazy to be honest. But I want to finish this year with a positive note and full of gratitude. Thus, I have incorporated some habit tracking and practice of gratitude. Time like this may feel monumental but I believe that everything happens for a reason and I have no other choice except being optimistic about the future, as cliche as it may sound like.

so I created an oil pastel server couple weeks ago. It’s a small, niche server where we draw together, chat, listen to music and just chill. it’s for those who use oil pastels or want to learn more about oil pastels. If you’re interested, pm me for the link.

hey! could i ask you some advice on how to network in grad school? i also have to pick a research group and idk how to do that either. I'm pretty much on the introverted anxious-wreck side and i don't know how to approach profs and senior students. how was it for you in your first year of grad? x
Hi there!
Here’s my top advice on networking in grad school:
Create a LinkedIn account. This really should be a necessity nowadays, because it’s the best way to stay connected on a professional level; no other platform allows you to quickly (and passively, which is great for introverts) see what company people are at right now, etc. So create an account, stay active on it, and use it to form and maintain your connections. I quite literally landed my industry job out of my PhD via LinkedIn.
Get to know the other grad students--not just in your immediate cohort, but also older grad students, younger grad students, grad students from other programs, etc. They will be your colleagues, now and forever. Same goes with anyone else you come into contact with, including post-docs, research techs, professors, etc. If approaching older students/professors is intimidating, just start with your classmates. Any connection is a good connection. Joining any events your program or the grad college offers (like volunteering) is also a great casual way to meet people. You don’t have to become BFF’s with them--just know them enough so they’ll remember who you are when you add them on LinkedIn!
An under-appreciated place to network are poster sessions. Check out my post about “Networking at conferences” for more info (and to read other tips I have there). Not sure when in-person conferences will return in the world of Covid, but it doesn’t hurt to keep them in the back of your mind.
Informational interviews are great informal ways to learn more about a job or company. I did one over the phone with a program alumnus who was working at a company I had hoped to join after graduating, and here are the questions I asked him: Possible questions to ask during an informational interview
Keep in touch using LinkedIn messaging, or email. Phone calls and in-person meetings stress me out too, so I much prefer written communication where I can re-write my message to my heart’s content. Keep in touch with past professors, mentors, and just anyone who has helped you by sending brief updates on your life, holiday greetings, etc.
If you don’t know how to approach someone, asking for their advice is always a good route to take. People love talking about themselves and doling out personal advice on what they’re most experienced about. So sending an email like, “I’ve just applied to this position at your company--do you think it’s a good fit for me and what advice would you offer if I move forward with interviews?” or even just “I want to be in your shoes someday; what advice can you give me?” stuff like that. (Also great for job interviews when you have a few more minutes to kill lol. I love asking: “So what was your path like to this company?” and then sit back and relax for a good 5 min.)
Here are some other masterposts of mine to check out for general grad school advice, including posts on picking research groups peppered in (some may have links that repeat themselves):

As for what my first year was like, it’s in my FAQ page (if you scroll down to “What’s grad school like?”. In general it was a whirlwind of just trying to learn a million things at once, but I took it a day at a time :) I was lucky to have a great support group in my cohort, grad program, friends, and then eventual thesis lab.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Best of luck during your grad journey!

As most people are working and studying from home right now, I wanted to share some concrete, implementable ways you can help yourself feel better. Though I believe productivity and quantity of work done (or lack thereof) doesn’t/shouldn’t translate into your self-worth and how you view yourself, when you get work done, you actually do feel better in your own body.
By the way, it’s the first time I’m formatting a tips/guide post like this, so I apologize that I couldn’t be more concise.
I’ve spoken to a licensed professional counsellor as well as to some professionals who have been working from home for a long time, and some of the advice above is from them. I’m also sharing from my own experience as someone who used to be very productive and an (ex-)overachiever, and still attach a lot of my self-worth to grades and other tangible accomplishments. I hope these slides can help you. In case it’s hard to read, I’ve included it (reworded) in text form if you’d like to read more.

human history is written in the simplest things, but one of my favorite ways to learn is through the history of fabrics. in particular, there’s a long history of naming fabrics after places.
Specifically, western names for fabrics tend to be named for the places that first imported them to the west. But because of the international nature of fabric & fabric technology imports, these fabrics often originated from other places entirely:
Muslin is named after the city of Mosul, Iraq, where europeans first encountered it (it actually originated from Bangladesh)
The paisley pattern was a Persian/Iranian invention, re-designed and exported by India, and later named for Paisley, Scotland, a textile town that introduced the pattern to the west, where it became wildly popular. The design represents a pine cone from a cypress tree!
Cashmere wool was named for its association with Kashmir shawls, a trend that reached Europe from the Kashmir, India. It’s obtained from cashmere goats!
Damask is named for Damascus, capital of Syria, but it may have been created in China over a thousand years ago.
i just think it’s neat. bonus:
Jean fabric was created in Genoa, Italy. As a western invention, it wasn’t imported from anywhere and thus is named for its actual place of origin.
(Weavers in Nîmes, France quickly tried to copy the fabric, and so invented denim, originally called serge de Nimes.)

Hi bitches!! I need your wisdom; I recently accepted a job offer for a job I did not want to do (a customer service specialist for a bank) that doesn’t start until late November. However, I recently was offered a position that I do want at a different company that starts next week. Is there a polite way to rescind my acceptance of the bank job when I’ve already started signing papers?
YES, CHILD! Don’t hesitate. Talk to Job A right away and tell them Job B has just made you a better offer. That way they’ll have time to replace you before November. Here’s a script:
“I apologize for the inconvenience, but I’m going to have to back out of my employment with [Job A]. I’ve just been made a better offer by [Job B] beginning much sooner, and I am not in a financial position to refuse. I regret that we won’t be able to work together, but I appreciate your understanding. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Okay, let’s get something straight here:
Día De Los Muertos is not “A Mexican Halloween”
If you did not know that, it is alright it is not your job to know everything about ever culture but allow me to explain exactly what Day of the Dead is:
Día De Los Muertos/ Day of the Dead is a celebration but not so much of one like Halloween,
In the mornings there are typically parades all filled with laughter, dance, beautiful decorations, and music of course it is fun we celebrate the life we have
But we don’t paint our faces and go parading down the street for nothing, its not a thing we do just because it is fun
We MOURN
We honor those who has passed and made the journey to the afterlife
Each year families to to Grave sights (which are NOT for your aesthetically pleasing selfies please) to pay respects and visit those who have already gone
Mexicans and Hispanics are very family oriented people, at the grave sights you can often hear mother wailing out for their children who passed too soon or men knelt over their mother’s grave sobbing and of course children crying for their parents
People pray and cry out, they sob and scream
Yes it is a day of remembrance and we honor them but it is still painful, we miss those who once walked with us
Families and friends typically bring favorite food, flowers, drinks, etc to the graveyards
Do NOT make fun of that. Please.
DON’T post skeleton memes aimed at Day of The Dead, the calavera/sugar skulls are meant to represented the parted souls of loved ones with names etched onto the forehead and the skulls painted on our faces are meant to ward off more death
DON’T disrespect grave sights, this is an obvious thing not to do people
DON’T  celebrate if you do not intend of respecting and honoring those who have passed and just want it as a second Halloween
DON’T mock people celebrating or any of the traditions
DON’T mess the with petals, those orange petals are from a flower called  cempoalxochitl, and they are meant to help guide the dead back to their homes so their spirits can too visit
Don’t get me wrong Day of the Dead isn’t always sad it is also fun and amazing and beautiful, we not only honor those who have gone but we celebrate those who have lived this long, we celebrate the life we have and acknowledge the fact we made it this far, death is a natural cycle, death will take us all one day but not today, and that is the reason why we celebrate! It is a beautifully melancholy holiday, and remember Day of the Dead is actually multiple days do please be mindful!

I will literally never believe your 20s are meant to be the prime of your life. The years immediately following your adolescence? When you’re entrenched in the battlefields of un/learning, healing, and growing? Yeah right
