How old is Gohan (or DB fans can't read and Toriyama can't (couldn't) count)

It’s common knowledge people disagree with how old Gohan was during the Cell Games and during the Buu arc. His usual name for those two sections of the story, Teen Gohan and Adult Gohan, don’t seem to make any sense. 

Let’s start counting. (TLDR at the end with a ref chart)

When Gohan is first introduced, Bulma asks his age and he states he is four years old. 

The training period between Raditz’s death and Vegeta and Nappa’s arrival is shortened because the two Saiyans arrive one full month earlier than anticipated (making the training period 11 months long and not a year long). 

Kaio-Sama knew the Saiyans would arrive the next day, but forgot to factor in how long Goku would take to travel back from Snake Way. Oops.

That makes Saiyan invasion Gohan probably five years old. 

Bulma, Gohan and Krillin land on Namek about forty days later (2 days at the Hospital, five days to repair the Namekian ship, one month to travel to Namek and the entire stay is about a week). 

It'll take 5 days to repair

Let's meet in 10 days (repair + learn Namekian + Gohan and Krillin need to be released form the hospital)

It’s been 7 days since we left, we still have 20 days to arrive to Namek.

The forty-ish days are confirmed when Bulma says there are 20 days left until they arrive on Namek, and at the same time, Vegeta arrives to Freeza Planet 79 “18 days after his departure from Earth.” (chapter 246). If Gohan hadn’t turned five during his 11 months of training with Piccolo, now it’s been 12 months so for sure he’s five.

Same chapter, Vegeta arrives to his destination 18 days after leaving Earth.

When everyone is transported back to Earth from Namek about a week later (6 days for Goku to arrive + a little rest time after the Ginyu fight), Gohan is still five years old. 

When they are transported to Earth from Porunga’s last wish and Guru dies, transferring his power to Moori, the Namekian Dragon Balls are inactive, so they need to wait one Namekian year to use them again. A Namekian year is 130 days.

Everyone waits at Capsule Corp. They wait for 130 days (one Namekian year), summon Porunga and make three wishes: bring Krillin’s soul to Earth, resurrect him, and resurrect Yamcha.

(Notice Gohan's hair, as well as Bulma's hair has grown quite a bit in these 130 days)

They wait another 130 days, resurrect Tenshinhan and Chaozu, and the third wish is used to transport the Namekians to a new planet Namek. This means the Namekians stayed 260 days, or about eight months and a half at Capsule Corp.

Then, the panel says “about a year later”, when everyone senses Freeza. If we add that to the 8 months and change from before, we can round it to about 20 months (that’s almost two years!).

How old is Gohan then? He was quite a bit over five years old before, we can safely assume that if he’s not seven years old, he’s really close to it (his hair has also grown!)

Considering Capsule Corp is having a Barbecue and Krillin and Gohan complain about being "hot" (Trunks pops out a fridge with cold drinks), it's safe to assume the Meca Frieza thing happens during the summer.

The next timeskip is “about three years, on May 12th”, but let’s keep some elements in mind from that section. We need to take note of some elements we know from 17yo Trunks and what we see in the Android Saga: 

For the first trip to the past, Trunks comes from “roughly twenty years in the future”.

Trunks will be born “two and a half years from now” (= he's 17 years old). 

The cyborgs/androids appear “in roughly three years, on May 12th.”

We don’t officially know Gohan's birthday from the manga, but we do know it from the Anime as being May 18th (he celebrates it during the 9 days between the announcement on TV and the Cell Games). Due to the “about three years” skip, Gohan is about to turn 10 years old at the start of the Android Saga. 

His stay in the Room of Spirit and Time lasts under a year. Give or take a few weeks to his biological age, during the Cell Games, Gohan’s biological age is almost 11 years old, while his calendar age is 10. Hardly a “teen”!

Now onto the 7 year timeskip. 

This is where things get complex, and we need to state some key elements: the school year starts in April in Japan, and the Tenkaichi Budokai always happens on May 7th, which means the Saiyaman Arc happens during the month between the first day of class and the Tournament. 

However… The manga does not say it’s been seven years. It says “years have passed” and “Gohan turned 16”. 

Here’s the big question: Is Gohan about to celebrate his 17th calendar birthday, or his biological one? Or is he actually about to turn 16 and the panel just anticipates his upcoming birthday?

We don’t know. This means we have no idea how long has passed from this information alone. This is why we need to find other clues.

Thankfully, we took note of some dates and other elements prior, and to solve the mystery, we will use Trunks. 

Trunks is stated to be 8 years old, and Goten is stated to be 7 years old during the tournament. 

Trunks was born “in about two and a half years” after the Meca Frieza situation, and the Androids attacked “in about three years”, making baby Trunks between infant and ten-ish months old by the time the Cell Games rolled around (both main timeline Trunks and Future Trunks have different birthdays actually, but they’re both in the second half of the year so here it does not matter). 

As such, Trunks’ birthday has to be after the Cell Games (he holds his head but can't walk, he grabs but can't talk, making him younger than a year old). This means his birthday has to be after the Tenkaichi Budokai (which is always on May 7th). That means Trunks will be turning nine years old during that calendar year (otherwise the Announcer would say "he's about to turn 8" or something like that).

If you believe Trunks may have been a year old already by the time the Cell Games rolled around, that’s fine! Let’s use Goten then. 

Goten was born after the Cell Games, which is after the Tenkaichi. However, during the Buu Tournament, he is clearly stated to be seven years old. This means the Saiyman and Buu saga cannot be “a little under seven years after the Cell Games (which was at the end of May)”. 

Even if Chichi gave birth to him the day after the Cell Games, it’s not possible for him to be already seven years old on May 7th during the Tenkaichi.

(and in this house we do not doubt the Announcer’s ability to give accurate info)

If we want the boys’ ages to make sense, we need to think they’ll be turning 8 and 9 respectively. 

And the Tenkaichi Budokai is traditionally held every three years so the Buu saga needs to happen “just a little under 9 years” after the Cell Games.

The problem is that if that’s the case, no matter how you add it up, May 7th, “a little under 9 years after the Cell games’, makes Gohan’ calendar age 17 (almost 18 since his birthday is coming up soon), but his biological age is almost 19. This means unless the Saiyaman arc takes place over a year and they train for that long for the tournament, his age doesn’t work. 

Though that does mean “adult Gohan” for Buu Gohan actually works…

There is no way to make both these elements work… unless we question Gohan’s initial age.

He is holding three fingers up, not four!!

Indeed, Toriyama changed his age in the following chapter. His 3 years old situation was corrected in the volumes, but the artwork was NOT corrected. This is how you show 3 and 4 with your fingers in Japan!

If Gohan starts at 3 years old, then everything falls into place just fine.

And this is why many of us say Gohan was 10 when he killed Cell.

I Know What You Are... You Are Mega Man!

The differences between each Mega is something I love and appreciate, plus it's also fun to compare them side-by-side for it.

I think it's really amusing how they start with robots that slowly reach near-human traits, and then there's a straight-up human. Albeit, he is merged with a non-human being.

And then there's Volnutt. I know he could probably be narrowed down to an "artificial human", but I like the idea of tying him to his celestial origins as Trigger that are still half a mystery.

Such is my running-joke with him. He is just... Volnutt (currently).

HubStyle but Manga but Beyond the Net!AU

We all know Hubstyle in the manga was a completely different ball game than the game and the anime *was it even in the anime? Idk man*. So while I was reading the manga I found one of my old snippets. Enjoy human Hub losing his mind like in that one manga fight lol.

"Keep up Hub!" Blues shouted as he swung the cybersword. "What happened to winning today?!"

Hub barely managed to dodge out of the way. He quickly returned to his feet and changed his hand to the mega buster. "I'm not done yet!"

The former navi swiftly dodged the shots and attempted another swipe which was intercepted by another sword clash as Lan had inserted a battle chip.

A few steps forward followed by being pushed backwards from the sheer force of Blues attack started to drain Hub's stamina. 'I...I'm running out of stamina. But I refuse to give up! Not now, not ever. I have to keep going.' Hub thought mindlessly as he caught Blues' sword with his hands.

"Give it up already. Your coordination is already faltering."

"No way!"

"Looks like this is going to be over soon." Chaud smirked as he glanced at Lan. "And I have barely touched my battle chips."

Lan growled. "Don't count us out yet!"

Hub pushed back Blues sword and the two traded blows. Unfortunately due to the sheer amount of strength and the constant blows, Hub's cybersword started to crack.

"Shoot I should've sent a different one." Lan pulled another sword battle chip out of his pocket.

Hub stumbled momentarily as his sword shattered. The oncoming attack lineup did not look good. "Ah Blues wait--"

"Hah!" Blues lunged forward and swung at the older twin. Fortunately, Hub dodged in enough time where it only caught his shoulder, but it was a very close call as Blues had almost hit his chest.

Blues landed on his feet as he stood up, giving the other enough time to recover. And in that moment Hub's adrenaline spiked massively.

"Ah." Lan grabbed his head as he seethed.

"What's wrong?" Chaud asked as he raised an eyebrow.

"I...I don't know...I think something happened to Hub?"

"Going for my chest is a low blow." Hub said as he stood up. “But two can play it that way.

"It was not intentional." Blues said. "I wouldn't aim for your chest."

"Hush won't you?"

Just that fast Hub had covered the distance between them and decked Blues clean in the face. "You're starting to annoy me."

"What---" Chaud begin as Blues stumbled back momentarily.

"Hub!" Lan cried.

Hub was there but he had changed. His blue colored armor had taken on a greenish hue with yellow streaks up the sides. His helmet had disappeared and the similar to his armor, yellow streaks stained his face going down the cheeks. Green circles of data surrounded his head and his waist and his expression had become emotionless.

Blues immediately stepped back to defend himself but Hub had increased his speed far too much and he ended up taking a shot from a rapid charged mega buster head on.

'That look in his eyes...' Blues thought as he tried to catch his breath. 'He's overwhelmed by power.'

"Blues watch out!!"

The former navi swung his sword quickly as Hub clashed with his own sword.

Blues quickly dodged another shot from the mega buster but in that small time frame however the older twin managed to sneak behind Blues. A kick to the back was delivered and as Blues went forward, Hub grabbed his jacket and yanked him back upwards effectively tossing him to the ground. Blues seethed as he settled into the now cracked floor.

"You're starting to bore me now too." Hub said plainly as he titled his head. He stepped over and kneeled down by his friend. Blues shivered as the boy smiled at him and grabbed his jacket collar. "It's been fun but let's end this shall we?"

"He's gone mad. Do something Lan. Don't just stand there!" Chaud shouted as he activated defense chips.

"Yeah but what do I do?!" Lan cried. "Wait! I've got it. I'll use the twin link!" The brown haired boy closed his eyes quickly and focused on his twin.

"Hub."

No answer.

"Hub."

"Hub."

"Hub!!!"

"Lan?" Hub said unsurely. He realized he was in their special link space. Was Lan trying to talk to him?

"You need to wake up! You're going crazy!" Lan shouted subconsciously. "You're going to hurt Blues beyond repair!"

Hurt Blues. Too much power.

"…Ah..." Hub realized what had happened as he heard Lan's voice over their twin link. He gently let go of Blues and stepped back.

"Did it work?" Chaud asked.

The green circular data sets disappeared as Hub returned to his normal state outside of combat and his expression softened.

Lan sighed with relief as he opened his eyes.

"Blues. I'm sorry." Hub offered Blues his hand. "I let power get the best of me and I almost got you seriously hurt."

Blues accepted his hand and Hub pulled him onto his feet. "What happened to you?"

"A style change. I believe the adrenaline spike I received caused my body's combat style to change rapidly. I lost control basically to an overpowered fight or flight response."

"Are you back to normal?" Blues asked.

Hub nodded. "Yeah sorry about--" But he didn't finish his sentence as Blues punched him in the face. "What the HECK Blues?!"

"Payback for earlier! My nose is still bleeding!" Blues shouted. "You need to get this style change under control!"

Hub sighed as he winced and rubbed his nose gingerly. "Yeah yeah I know..."

"Blues! Hub!" Lan called as him and Chaud opened the door to the training room.

"Ah your nose..." Chaud said slightly worried as they entered.

"It's nothing." Blues said as he touched his nose. His nose was still actively bleeding.

"Let me get you some ice and towel." Hub offered apologetically.

"I told it was nothing now leave me alone." Blues sighed.

"I'm just trying to help!"

"You've done enough!"

"Stop being a jerk!" Hub fussed. "At least go to first aid!"

"Like I'll listen to you." Blues scoffed.

"Please go get checked out Blues." Lan said. "C'mon your body is already banged up. Or get some pain medicine."

Blues sighed as Chaud handed him a small towel.

"I'll get you checked out before we leave. Now that that's settled." Chaud turned to the twins. "You need to learn to control that style change and fast. We can't afford having to fight you and the enemy at the same time."

Lan and Hub nodded solemnly. "We'll train hard Hub. We'll get this new power under wraps!!"

Hub smiled. "That's right Lan. There's nothing we can't do!"

Mini Sephiroth Sickfic

The day had started like any other; the group woke up and packed up to finish working in the Rahdorian territory. They were under orders to keep the premises safe and free of monsters until the mako reactor excavation team arrived.

No big deal, killing monsters was like sleeping for them. And with Sephiroth’s leading expertise and inhumane strength things were a breeze.

After trekking through the beautiful greenery and taking a stop at the waterfall, they were attacked by monsters native to the area, Graithstrikes and (insert). Lucia took her sniping position from behind as Matt and Glenn worked at the front. They were there to buy Sephiroth time to charge his Firaga attack (fire seemed to be his speciality element anyway).

Once Sephiroth gave the cue they withdrew from the area and an explosion of fire cleared the way. When they removed their arms from shielding their eyes, the trio was expecting to see Sephiroth standing there as usual, not crouching on the ground grabbing his head.

“Hey kid!” Glenn shouted as he ran over. “What’s wrong?”

“Glenn hush, his head’s probably hurting!” Lucia scowled as she hurried over.

Matt kneeled beside Sephiroth and gently touched his knee. “Sephiroth. Talk to us, we’re here. What’s going on?”

“My head.” Sephiroth seethed. “It hurts...so bad…”

The trio all glanced at each other with surprise and worry.

“Materia overuse possibly?” Lucia asked.

Matt shook his head “no”. “Sephiroth uses this kind of energy procurement on a regular basis. This is probably something else.”

“I think we should call it a day.” Glenn said. “Get Sephiroth back to camp and let him rest.”

Sephiroth protested but then another sharp pain struck him and he immediately shut his lips and instead placed his head on his knees.

“Yeah nice try kid, let’s get you somewhere safe.” Glenn shook his head as he helped up their team leader. “Are you able to walk?”

“Yes…for the most part…” Sephiroth carefully closed his eyes and opened them once more.

“Hold onto him, okay Glenn?” Lucia said. “Me and Matt will keep our line formation so you guys have coverage.”

Glenn nodded as he placed Sephiroth’s arm around his neck.

“I’m sorry about this…” Sephiroth murmured. “My apologies…I do not know…what is wrong.”

“Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out kiddo.” Glenn felt the need to try to reassure Sephiroth as they walked. The kid was a darn near perfectionist so he must’ve been having trouble comprehending this body’s current condition.
