I never really understood the word hope until I had my preterm baby. At one point we were told the next 24 hours were crucial if our baby would survive. It was so hard to keep desperation and shock at bay. It felt like our world was falling apart. The staff were absolutely incredible that night, they kept us sane. Although the memories are still so vivid , their support shines through like a torch in the darkness . I think it was hope that got us threw that day and other hurdles. 1lb 2 oz, born at 22 weeks and spent almost a year in hospital. A big one now and hopefully will come off all mechanical ventilation. There were 2 siblings at home which inevitably is extremely difficult for younger children to be separated from their mum and vice versa. When you deliver early, you might not see your baby before they are taken away to the NICU. Sometimes the mother is very sick or unconscious. The NICU staff are lovely as they send a photo up to you in recovery. I remember being allowed down to the NICU after a day. It was then I realised the photographs were close up. I could only see one arm and 2 little legs, all of 2lb. Initially it's shocking but then you realise that these tiny little babies are absolute warriors. We were so saddened to hear of the passing of Prof O’Keeffe, who was a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the Mater, in Temple Street and the Rotunda. He looked after so many preterm babies over his career. He would visit the NICU's at time and preform procedures. He was a wonderful gentleman and an outstanding doctor. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times in Clinic's. The man was a legend and spoke so passionately about his patients.
