Peeta’s thoughts waking up and seeing Katniss beside him in that very scary pool of blood in the cave
This was a mean prompt lol but actually super fun because I now have headcanons about this time which I didn't before lol so thank you!! Enjoy 😊
I wake in darkness, the only light the moon outside the small opening at the mouth of our cave. I blink, my head foggy like after a dose of sleep syrup—
Sleep syrup! Katniss! I bolt upright, looking around, and spy her lying in a crumpled position outside the sleeping bag, a pool of blood surrounding her.
No! I told her not to risk her life for me! I scramble out of the sleeping bag, my fingers frantically searching for signs of life—is she breathing? Is her heart beating? I find signs of both and let out a breath of relief.
“You’re gonna be okay, Katniss,” I tell both her and myself. She has—has to be okay. Anything else is unthinkable.
I use what’s left of our water cleaning her wound, then I put some of the burn ointment on it from her backpack and rip strips of cloth off of my shirt to bandage her up. When I’ve tied the cloth around her head as tight as I dare, I strip her of her boots and socks which are soaking wet and lay them near the entrance of the cave to dry. I refill the water jugs in the stream outside, then I work to unbraid and wash Katniss’s hair so it’s free of the blood and mud. I think of how she bathed me in the stream just a few days ago, and now risked her life for mine...the girl I love is showing me all the tenderness I've dreamed of showing her.
I rebraid her clean hair, tying it off, and unzip the sleeping bag, laying her gently inside. She looks like she is merely asleep now and I stroke her cheek gently. With Katniss taken care of, I turn to our cave: refilling the water jugs for a second time, putting the drops of iodine in, and while I wait to be able to drink water, I grab moss off a rock outside to soak up the pool of blood. That is the best I can do under the circumstances, but I can’t leave it to attract predators.
I check again to make sure Katniss is breathing, her heart rate is steady, and once more reassured, I turn to what little food we have to assuage my grumbling stomach. I eat half of it before I realize what I’m doing, it should last longer than this, but I’ve eaten so little in the last few days being sick with fever. Still, guilt sinks through me. I shall give Katniss what remains when she wakes.
Rain begins to pour down in earnest and I settle in for a long night of watch. Please wake soon, I think desperately. I can’t bear it if I never see her gray eyes again, never hear her laugh. I’ve loved her for so long... am I to lose her so soon? Hours pass in agony as I watch for signs of life, the gentle rise and fall of her chest a soothing balm to my aching heart.
Near daybreak, she stirs. I stroke her cheek softly, “Katniss? Katniss, can you hear me?”
Her gray eyes open, widening in alarm and then softening when they register me. “Peeta,” she says. Warmth rushes through me at the sound of my name on her lips.
“Hey,” I say. “Good to see your eyes again.”

Who is she?
Okay so inspired by a post @finnicksannie had up. Drunken Katniss, crying because because her fake fiancee Peeta told her he was taken when she asked.......
My imagination had a very clear idea where it wanted to go so I followed it! It's an AU fic, no Hunger Games and was written quickly as I wait to watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier so apologies for the mistakes.
Hope you enjoy @oakfarmer12 (since you tags got me thinking about making it a story) @honeylime08 @javistg @french-janelle
Katniss Everdeen woke up with a head full of fuzz and a mouth as dry as a desert. She was still wearing her jeans and shirt, but her shoes were off and beside her locker was a glass of water. She was glad her drunk self had some sense last night.
I knew it was a bad idea to go out and celebrate last night; the final performance of the drama society She had the lead female role in her school production of Panem’s most famous play “Merrily we love” the premise of the play was fake relationships, standing up for yourself and finding happy endings -even if they aren’t traditional endings.
Her character was being -for the sake of her kingdom - made to choose a man to marry, none of who she knew. Her suitors were going to try and win her hand in competition, as she was a prize rather than a person. However with the help of her best friend and a fake engagement was able to avoid the arrangement and in time convince her parents that she did not need a husband and if she did marry she wanted it to be for love. The play ended with her character remaining unmarried, happy and hopeful for her future.
Last night was the final show, and the mayor's daughter had arranged a party. Normally Katniss avoided these things but Gale had insisted she go.
She remembered some of the night but thanks to more than a few beers there were distinct blanks in her night.
She was just mustering the energy to get out of bed when her phone rang. She sat up and located the phone.
“Hello?”
“Catnip! How’s the head?” answered the ridiculously perky Gale Hawthorne.
“Jesus Gale stop shouting. What is wrong with you? You are normally a grumpy ass.” She mumbled.
“Can’t a guy just call his best friend and check on her especially since she was so wasted last night?” He practically sing songed down the phone at her.
“Gale. Cut the crap? You clearly have something to say.” Katniss moaned wondering what exactly her drunk ass had done last night.
“Well it’s just you were flirting up a storm with Mellark last night…”
Katniss was glad Gale couldn’t see her face which was burning. Peeta Mellark had been playing the part of her best friend and fake fiancé in “Merrily..”
Before the play they had just been acquaintances. Then rehearsals happened and they ended up spending time together and somehow they had ended up as a couple. A secret couple that no one knew about.
She tried to play it off as a joke “Well he is my fake-fiancé.”
“Oh yeah that’s true. It was even funnier when you asked him if he was single.”
“No!!! I didn’t!!”
“Oh yes you did and then….. and then….” Gale was wheezing with laughter. “And then you cried when he said he wasn’t.”
“Wait what?” Katniss threw herself back on her bed and wished at that very moment for a meteor to strike the earth and end the world.
“Oh yeah full on tears. It was made all the funnier because not 15 minutes beforehand you told me “your secret “; that you and Mellark were a couple.” Gale was absolutely delighting in telling her this.
“Wha?! Who else saw this? How bad was I? Oh god.” Katniss sort of felt like crying again.
On the other end of the phone Gale toyed with the idea of tormenting Katniss some more, but he couldn’t do it.”
“Katniss relax, Mellark and I were the only people with you. You were buzzing at Madge’s but wanted to leave so I offered to walk you home. Peeta happened to be leaving too so joined us. I know now that was bullshit, dude just wanted to make sure his girl got home okay.”
“Anyway we sat on the steps of your house when you told me about you and Mellark. I have to admit I didn’t think you could keep secrets. He was shocked that you were outing them as a couple, although he mentioned your were going to make it official in a few weeks once the play was done and forgotten”
“He was even more shocked when you FORGOT you were the reason he wasn’t single. You started bawling then wished him well and hoped that his girlfriend knew how unbelievably special he was.”
“Then you kind of demanded to know and I quote “WHO IS SHE? I need her to know if she hurts Peeta I’ll shoot an arrow in her eye!!” and then you passed out in his lap. I have never heard you talk so much in the eight years I’ve known you.”
“Oh hell, poor Peeta I have to call him. I am never drinking again, how was he when he left?” Katniss asked, assuming Gale had brought her in and put her to bed.
“Peeta helped me get you into bed, he’s a nice guy I can see why you fell for him. If you check your sofa you can ask him yourself. He offered to stay and keep an eye on your drunken ass to make sure you were okay. If you guys are up for it I’m meeting Jo at Sae’s in an hour, if not enjoy your hangover.”
“I will and Gale? Thank you.”
“No probs, see you later”
Katniss hung up and walked out to her living room, she heard the soft snores before she saw him. There on her sofa was Peeta Mellark. His blond hair all over the place, his shoes and jacket neatly placed on the floor and the chair beside him.
She touched his shoulder and shook him gently. He slowly opened his eyes and focused his blue eyes on her, a sleepy smile gracing his face.
“Hey.” he smiled up her.
“Hey, the bed’s more comfortable if you want to join me” she said touching his face, loving the feeling of his stubble as he leaned into her touch.
“That sounds perfect.” he replied
“I do….but first I really have to have a shower, and maybe afterwards we could spend the day here just doing nothing, together?” she asked shyly.
Peeta grinned up at her “I’d like that very much, although my girlfriend might not approve. I should probably ask her.” and he grabbed his mobile and started calling someone.
Katniss was genuinely confused until she heard her phone ring from the bedroom.
“Well aren’t you going to answer that?” asked Peeta looking all angelic.
She couldn’t help but laugh, knowing she was never going to live down last night's drunken outburst.

“So what you’re telling me is that you aren’t affected by me, by my presence, at all?” Peeta asks, his lips just inches from mine.
When he speaks, his tone is low, and it is dangerous to my resolve; each word is velvet soft and curls deep within my belly. Everything about the man, from his crooked smile to his piercing blue eyes, is a seduction, and I am more than ripe for picking.
He waits on my answer like a trained cat, ready to pounce. “No one has to know. It can be our secret.” Peeta stands so close to me in the dark hallway, caging my smaller form in with his body. “No one needs to know your sworn enemy has become your lover.”
“No,” I answer. My chin lifts up, but still, I curse the tremble in my voice at his nearness, showing my answer for the lie that it is.
I hate the man so much- I wish I could convince my body of the same thing.
“No, you don’t want me, or no, you shouldn’t?” He asks, moving closer. It infuriates me that, yes, Peeta knows I want him but will wait for me to make the first move like the bastard he is. This means it’s up to me to stop this dance of seduction or move things forward. I’m so weak and so ready for a man’s touch.
No, not just any man’s touch- his touch. I can admit that now.
“I shouldn’t,” I whisper, my harsh tone dropping away. The way my chest heaves is hardly subtle. Peeta has been with enough women, surely, to recognize my desire.
“Katniss, there’s nothing wrong with giving in to your hunger,” his fingers lightly trail across the skin of my shoulders. He hesitates at the upper curve of my breasts, exposed to his view by the wide neckline of my dinner dress. “It’s perfectly natural. Sex makes the world go ‘round. I just bet,” he says, his voice dropping conspiratorially as he tilts his head to whisper in my ear, “your underthings are positively soaked in your own desire, aren’t they? If I got down on my knees before you and pushed up your skirt, your sweet scent would fill my nostrils. Don’t deny it- I’ve never known you to be a liar before. Don’t start the habit now.”
My face flames at his words, anger at his forwardness and disgust with myself warring because yes, damn him, Peeta is right. I am a trembling, flaming mess.
“Why you-” I begin, but stop when he backs away from me, finally, at entirely the wrong moment.
In the growing distance between us, I am hot and flustered, and so angry. Where does he think he’s going?
“Think of me tonight when you are alone in your bed,” Peeta says, his eyes burning through me like a white-hot flame, “because I will surely be thinking of you.”
With those words, he turns to leave me alone, but to his credit, he stops immediately when I speak. He does not turn around to look at me yet, but I know I have his attention, regardless.
I am too hot-headed and foolish, it shall be the death of me one day, but tonight I will not be denied. “No,” I say defiantly. “I will not think of you alone in my bed.”
“And why is that?” Peeta asks, his head finally turning to the side. It’s too dark in the hall to see where his focus is, but I sense that I have every bit of his attention.
“Because I will have you in it,” I say, stepping towards him. “And damn the consequences.”

Hurry Down the Chimney
Tumblr media
For the Anon (I think you were Anon…) who asked for some naughty Christmas themed Come On Baby, Light My Fire. It’s a little late, but I managed something. Also yes, I shamelessly used a lyric from Santa Baby for the title. Mainly because I couldn’t think of a good word to use, lol. Bon Appétit.
RATED M for sexual themes and language.
There may be a part two for this. Because I am a horrible tease today and am undecided on the matter. mwahahahahahaha.

Wrote this last night at 2am. Reposting instead of reblogging the original photo, now that I actually know what I am doing in the light of day.
the-peeta-pocket wrote: someone use this as inspiration to write a disgustingly cheesy everlark drabble now please
The moonlight streams through the open window, casting enough light on the bed to ensure I don’t need to turn on the light when I enter the room. Although the covers are bunched up in a way that prevents me from getting a good look, the light snores I hear are as good an indication as any that my husband is sound asleep. Good. Peeta doesn’t need to know how long I’ve been up.
I sneak into the master bath, prepping myself for bed as quickly and quietly as I can, before tiptoeing my way to the bed. I carefully lift up the duvet and slip under the covers. Peeta sleeps with his back to me. I move to wrap my arms around him, cocooning him with my whole body. He’s so warm, I think to myself with a smile. Lying here under the covers, you’d never know that it’s still snowing out.
Instinctively, I snuggle in closer. But just as I move to tuck my toes under Peeta’s thigh-
“Ahhh! Fuck, that’s cold!” Peeta screams with a jolt. I grab his arm in an effort to keep him from falling out of bed.
I knew I should have put socks on first.
“Sorry, love,” I say apologetically. “It’s still really cold out, and the window’s open…just go back to sleep, okay?”
“Are you just getting to bed now? What time is it?” Bleary eyed, Peeta fumbles for the glasses on his nightstand so he can get a good look at the clock radio he insists on keeping on the dresser across from us. “1:37? Really?”
“It’s not that late,” I argue. “You make it sound like I’ve just snuck home after staying out until last call.”
“It’s late enough for people like us…you know, the kind that never get any sleep because they have two kids and jobs that require them to get up at dawn,” he points out with a smirk.
“Says you.”
“Says me. What were you doing up so late, anyway?”
“Nothing,” I say, grabbing his arm and pulling it around me so that I’m the little spoon. Hopefully this way he won’t catch the look on my face as I answer his question.
Peeta, however, is too sharp to fall for my ruse. Leaning in close, he speaks in a low whisper. “Katniss….have you been reading fan fiction again?”
Shit.
“No…?” I half say, half ask in a manner that makes it 100 percent clear that that’s exactly what I was doing.
He chuckles. “You know, you don’t have to be embarrassed about it. It’s okay.”
I squirm in his arms. “Mmhmm.” There’s not much else I can say - he might be telling the truth, but that doesn’t mean I don’t find it mildly mortifying that I’ve been caught.
Peeta’s breath tickles my neck as he teases, “You were reading the smutty kind, weren’t you?”
I can feel my ears warming. In retaliation, I swat at his hand. “Shut up.”
“Oh, you were!”
“Good night, Peeta,” I say with finality, pulling the covers up so that the duvet covers my face. Of course, in the process I end up exposing our bare feet to the cold air, but I refuse to make a move to adjust the blanket a second time.
Peeta just laughs lightly, rubbing his feet against mine to keep them warm. Enveloping me in his arms, he plants a kiss in my hair. “Good night, Katniss. I love you.”
I can’t help but smile. “I love you too.”
“Even when you wake me up with freezing feet in the middle of the night after you’ve stayed up too late reading fanfic.”
“Shut up.”

AFTER THE FIRE, ASHES REMAIN
(5/5)
I started this fic in 2015, last time I updated it was 2018.
Some of you would think , why am I finishing it now? The answer is easy: Kika.
I didn’t have time to finish before the deadline of @promptsinpanem but I still promised myself to finish the Fic to honor her and her amazing writing . She was one of the first Everlark writers I read. She was one of my fave writers also.
I had the luck and honor to work in this project with @ombradellaluna who has illustrate the ending of the fic with a gorgeous drawing in honor of Kika also.
Read the fic here:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/3723424/chapters/8248228
Please drop your comments and thoughts and reblog so everyone can see the GORGEOUS illustration.

Chapter 1
“Well, Ye’d have to promise me your firstborn.” Peeta’s voice was soft beguiling.
“My firstborn,” Katniss shrieked, her mind quickly going over what that meant. Her father said that when a fairy took interest in a mortal, they never let go until they obtained what they sought. -

Sneak Peek of Tósta
Based off this post - A story that intrigued me about what happened after she’d gotten her wish from thee fairy…thanks to @javistg for taking this story on and betaing it.
Tumblr media
The woods always made Katniss feel alive.
She ran to a small clearing where her father had told her the fairies liked to gather. Katniss settled on a soft tuft of spring grass. There once was a ring of stones located here, now there was a semicircle. There were rumors about the mystical power of this place.  Her father Alvin was full of stories about the fairies and the mischief they caused.
Her mother did not like the stories, but she never stopped them from being told.
Her father always said the King of the fairies loved this spot. He told her they were bakers, and loved presents. Her father said this spot in the woods was a place of deep magic.  A place where the mortal world met the immortal one.
There was a song that spoke of a love between a fairy and a human. A broken heart, and a lover who willed themselves to die was the result. Her mother forbade the song to be sung in their home. She said that one should never invite the fairies because they caused mischief. Katniss had only heard it once but, as she looked up at the canopied sky, she could see the dark stars peeking through the leaves of the trees.
The song bubbled up from within her heart. It began as a hushed hum, but soon the words slipped from her mouth as if they were threaded with the strings of her soul. Her voice carried through the darkened forest and, unbeknownst to Katniss, it attracted small woodland creatures.
Katniss poured her grief, her fright, and her frustrations into each word of the song.
“What a lovely tune.”
The male voice startled Katniss.
She found herself staring into a beautiful male face, it then occurred to her he was floating. “Augh!” her yell startled several birds and they took off flying.
Katniss quickly got up and ran. But, as she escaped, she found herself right back where she started.
The man sat on the patch of grass she had been occupying. Thinking he must have out run her; she ran in another direction but, once more, found herself coming to the same spot.
This time, she did not run. She stalked toward another direction, taking her time, only to find herself face to face with him again. Katniss once more attempted to walk away, but irrevocably found herself back at the same spot.
“Are Ye tired yet?” He had a bit of a brogue accent, and was looking at his fingernails as if bored.
He was lying down, no, Katniss corrected herself, he was hovering, over the spot. It was an unnatural sight but, given what she had just experienced, perhaps it was she who stood on unnaturally un-firm ground.

1- "I love you, please don't go." ❤
Thanks for the prompt @bestloversfan
Here’s a little quickie thing I wrote to go with this one.
Warning- she’s a little bit angsty.
“But I don’t understand why?” I asked, following a discrete distance behind Katniss as she stomped out of her bedroom and through a mess of what I’d swear was every item of clothing she owned. They were all the things she’d claimed to be packing when I checked in on her a few minutes ago, even though there was no rhyme or reason to the chaos.
When I asked why she was leaving, she became even more agitated as if she were in no frame of mind to answer and questions.
If she only knew why I couldn’t agree with her sudden relocation plans.
“Explain to me why it is exactly that you think you need to move out and go back home now,” I asked, frowning in complete bewilderment at the back of her head as I followed her.
“What isn’t there to understand,” Katniss began, her words coming from a place of betrayal and rage that seemed to bubble up from deep inside her body. Despite the snappish way she was speaking to me, I knew I wasn’t the cause of her anger. I just happened to be getting the brunt of it. “What's left for me after all this?”
I stare at her, unsure of what to say for the first time in my life. There’s always the truth, but I don’t know if she’s ready to hear that. I don’t know if now is the right time.
Katniss is outraged right now, and I get it. I do. Her feelings are hurt.
Gale and Madge could’ve said something before she found out they were together on her own- they had to have known she would find out eventually.
And find out Katniss did, walking in on them together in Madge’s room this morning, they were half-naked and preparing to undress the rest of the way before she discovered them, at least according to Katniss’s account of what had happened that morning.
But to my way of thinking, and I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am- Katniss needs to understand that what happened between her ex-boyfriend and her childhood best friend wasn’t some major betrayal. She and Gale had called it quits almost a year ago, and they’ve mostly been on friendly terms with each other since.
Katniss stopped in her tracks once she reached the living room of the apartment that she and I shared with Madge, a three-bedroom on the building’s top floor. Our corner of the level has shitty views, but the rent was decent with the three of us sharing expenses.
I watched as she sat on the back of the sofa and shook her head. “This is just the last straw, Peeta. First Gale and I break up, which was fine-”
She sounded as though that was fine, although her behavior was telling me a different story. I wasn’t sure which version I ought to believe, though, her words or her irritation.
“And then I go and lose my job,” Katniss continued, referencing the office position she’d lost due to downsizing a month ago.
I knew that was a blow to her self-confidence as well.
“But I’m sure you’ll hear something from one of the other places you applied to soon,” I reassured her, rubbing the back of my neck the way I do when I’m nervous. There was so much on the line. If she moved out, I felt like I’d never see her again. She would want to distance herself from Madge, and that meant distancing herself from me too since I lived in the same apartment as her former friend.
Katniss ignored me, going on- “And now, Madge. I just,” she sighed and straightened up, “I feel like there’s no reason for me to stay here now. You know, it’s like- what’s left here in the city for me? Our lease is up soon, so I might as well go back home for a while and see what I can find there- at least I can save some money while I stay with my mom.”
And with those crushing words, I realized for the first time that Katniss didn’t consider me incentive enough to keep living in the city.
Her old buddy Peeta was good enough to be by her side for her moral support, but would never be enough for her to stick around- at least not through some discomfort and embarrassment that was courtesy of her ex and her former friend.
I should be used to this, I think, as her bedroom door shuts in front of my face. It’s the story of my life.
“What about this for a reason,” I whisper as I press my forehead against her bedroom door, wishing I could say it to her face, “I love you, please don’t go.”

Prompt- Everlark haven’t seen each other since they were kids, bump into each other somewhere like Las Vegas (can be somewhere else just a vacation spot far from home)
It came out a little long, ha! But I got carried away. I hope you enjoy this:)
Peeta grunts around the alcohol in his mouth when Finnick throws an arm over his shoulder, nearly resulting in him falling from his stool. He coughs as the liquid makes its rough descent down his throat, and he takes another drink to find some relief.
“It’s my bachelor party, and you’re killing the mood, Mellark.” Finnick gives him a firm pat on the back before waving down the bartender.
“I told you, I don’t gamble,” Peeta rasps, earning him an eye roll.
“Well, now, you do. This is what you agreed to when you became my best man.” The bartender came back with Finnick’s bourbon, then walked away to help the next waiting customer. Finnick turns toward Peeta. “One game, then you can come back here and mope over Delly.”
Peeta frowns. “I’m not moping.” Was he? Delly, his girlfriend of three years, decided to break up with him before Finnick’s bachelor trip. It was unexpected, and she couldn’t even tell him in person. Instead, Delly called him on his way to work without offering any explanation, but he assumed it had more or less to do with his job. She always complained that he spent more time staring at naked women than the one that shared his bed. As a nude artist, it is part of the job, but Delly didn’t understand this.
He looks down into his whiskey for a second, then threw the rest back. “Fine,” he said. “One game.”
Finnick claps him on the back again. “Finally.”
They walk over to where Cato and Marvel are finishing a game of poker. Peeta looks around the table, taking in everyone, until his eyes stop on a petite, olive-skinned woman, with ebony hair lying in loose waves about her shoulders. She is gorgeous, Peeta concedes right away, and so unlike other women, he came across on this bachelor party trip.
Her face had minimal makeup, and Peeta notices the tumbler of amber liquid at her side. She doesn’t have the best poker face, a scowl pulling on her features every time she looked down at her hand of cards. Peeta wonders why she came to the poker table in the first place.
The game ends, and everyone moves away from the table except her, Cato, and Marvel. Peeta decides to take the opportunity to claim the empty spot right next to her. She doesn’t look over at him when he leans against the table. Instead, she grips the table and stares down the dealer.
Peeta is undecided if he should introduce himself or not, but something about her makes him swallow his apprehension.
“Hey,” he says simply. As her head turns to see who’s talking to her, steel-grey eyes piercing his, he feels out of his league. Shit. Peeta didn’t think she could be more attractive… or intimidating.
“What do you want?” She glares him down, and he notices the slight shift she makes to create space between them.
He panics. What does he say? “I just thought I’d introduce myself… I guess,” he finishes lamely. She studies him for a second, deciding whether to trust him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to- I’m not a creep.” Good one.
The corner of her mouth turns up slightly. “You know, most people that say they’re not creeps, turn out to be creeps.”
He releases a nervous laugh. At least she has a sense of humor. “Uh, Peeta,” he says and offers her his hand.
Her eyes turn into saucers. “Peeta? As in Peeta Mellark?”
His hand falls to the table, and he stares at her in confusion. Maybe she’s seen his art. “Er, yeah. I didn’t know I was that popular.”
She snorts. “Well, you were when we were kids. I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing has changed since then.”
He shakes his head, trying to put a name to her face. “I’m sorry-” But she cuts him off.
“Katniss. We went to the same school until high school.“
Then it clicks, but he couldn’t remember ever talking to the girl he would study from afar. Too afraid to speak to her. He didn’t even believe she knew he existed. How wrong he was.
Peeta rubs the back of his neck, feeling nervous all of a sudden. "I remember, you hung out with- was it, Gale?”
Katniss nods, but her eyes seem far away. “Yeah.”
She falls silent, and Peeta hurries to fill the air between them again. “Well, you look great."
A blush stains her cheeks. "Thank you.” Peeta feels his pulse pick up as her eyes roam over his black slacks and blue button-up. “You do too.”

Fate and the Four Legged
All rejoice for buttercupbadass hath gifted us with a fluffy drabble!!!
************
Let me tell you a story about Fate and about how we ended up here tonight.
It was a fateful meeting on a family vacation, we had pulled off the highway and into a small town.  The name of that town would be lost to family lore but I know if I ever were to see it again, I would know it.   We were travelling on a budget so we found a park and set up our picnic of baloney sandwiches and carrot sticks.   My brothers had run off to play soccer or something.  At six I was too young to keep up and left behind.  I was headed to the monkey bars when a dog unlike any other dog I had ever seen approached me.  Huge, white covered with soft orange speckles.  He had droopy lips and a tongue that hung out to the side.  He walked up to me and butted me with the top of his head then proceeded to cover me with slobbery kisses.  I remember laughing and playing with this dog, his owner, a woman called to him, but he decided I was more fun.  I remember asking his owner all about him, learning that he was a Clumber Spaniel, a breed my father had never heard of,  and I knew I had to have one.  A dog like this would be my best friend. We would play together and go on adventures.
We said goodbye to the lady and I asked my dad if we could get  a Clumber Spaniel too.  “Maybe someday.” He said, thinking I would forget all about the dog and move on.  But six year-old Peeta, knew what he wanted and so began a lifelong obsession.

Flashover, Chapter 2
Tumblr media
A moment’s inattention, and now he was sitting on a gurney in accident and emerg, pressing gauze against a gash in his arm that stung like a bugger. Fifteen years as a volunteer firefighter for Panem Fire and Rescue, and this was the first time Peeta Mellark had let his mind wander while on the job.
It was a car crash, pretty near as routine as they get. The Panem brigade was often first on the scene of car crashes on the lonely country roads, Peeta had attended dozens over his years volunteering. But this time, when he’d gone round to help extract the passenger from the crumpled wreck, all he’d seen was a sheet of inky-black hair glinting in his torchlight, and all of his training had momentarily flown from his head.

(I know I said I’d post these twice a week, but since they’re all short chapters, i think I’ll bump the frequency up to 3 times a week.)
