With the encouragement of @admirableadmiranda I had some thoughts regarding fandom and it's expectations that they want, and not necessarily the message coming from the text we read and are supposed to digest. As well as how it places these strict boundaries of not being able to make these characters nuanced as they are constantly called. I feel like what fandom wants a lot of the time is this self fulfilling need in themselves or want served some sort of comeuppance despite that's a call of further unnecessary cruelty and if that's what you choose you aren't any different from the in world condemnation and finding that scapegoat.
If you choose to see a sort of betterment for a character to please yourself it is to deny the heart and harm they canonically caused and underplay their existing personality to play to the wants you have. If you choose to hate them as well it is to the condemnation that they aren't capable of betterment upon the character's core nature that is nothing like our own.
In this sense I am specifically noting the way fandom deals with Jiang Cheng. They do not let him have his own sense of "redemption" or choose to see it as dissatisfying based on their own yearning and self experience. Yet it's not about "us". Self peace of one is not, and should not be, what I need for my own self. For Jiang Cheng his own peace is realizing that sacrifice and the catharsis of that acceptance is being able to accept yourself.
Jiang Cheng decides to be as he is without condemning Wei Wuxian finally for what he is or what he became as an adult. His core nature is still unlikeable, chooses force to keep anyone from arguing and is arrogant. But he uses that to protect Jin Ling, despite how much fandom may dislike this fact, he does love and who loves him in turn. He uses his nature now to protect someone he was not willing to do that for previously. He is not kinder or softer in nature and never will be, but he is standing by someone he truly does want to prosper without the expectation of gain for himself.
He stops forcing his own way onto Jin Ling as we are shown Jin Ling openly continuing his own hunts with the Lans as well as Wei Wuxian without Jiang Cheng interfering or inserting that Jin Ling is wrong for his associations he has chosen. As much as he hated Wei Wuxian, he also hated himself and by the end is able to accept his own bitter core without dying in hate as his mother had done. He is able to escape the shadow of being his mother in full, on HIS terms and no one else's. The point is not what is a dissatisfaction for the audience but what is a peace of self for the character.
What am I to decry a person's peace finally in their existence that does not resemble mine or what I want? That is the arrogance of the self that I refuse to partake of and find even more cruel to force on another and tell them "You are wrong for finding your own sense of self and peace because that's what I think".

Hello! Can I ask if there was mention of how JC was doing after he found out that WWX gave him his golden core? (specifically in the novel) I feel like there was but I cant remember if I hallucinated it or it was canon... consuming and interacting with the fanon media has been... uhh... yea... Hahaha --; Im not quite sure anymore too cuz its been years since I read the novel too...
Thanks for your time.
Good day, anon!
There is no on page mention of Jiang Cheng concerning the core transfer after it. Only of Wei Wuxian still recovering from the surgery itself before he is thrown into the Burial Mounds. The next on screen interaction we have is between Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng who is shown to be as he had been pre-core loss.
Edit: @admirableadmiranda also noted you asked specifically after he found out about the core which... is a lot less nice?
Essentially he threw a tantrum within Guanyin Temple as to why he wasn't told at first, cried and then continued to frame it once more as Wei Wuxian asking him to see it as repayment for the deaths of his family. And... that's that. His closing thoughts were that he finally understood why he didn't tell Wei Wuxian of his distraction of the Wens. Because why tell a truth that would only break the stability that someone has finally received by telling them they owe it to you to for your sacrifice. He was kicked down and learned to live with it because he was no longer being coddled and made to be an adult. You live with what you did, caused and move on.
"Jiujiu, were you going to say something earlier?”
"What?” Jiang Cheng said. “No.”
"Just now!” Jin Ling persisted. “I saw it. You were going to say something to Wei Wuxian, but you didn’t.”
After a long silence, Jiang Cheng shook his head. “There’s nothing to say.”
What was there to say?
Perhaps there was this:
“I didn’t get caught by the Wen Clan because I insisted on returning to Lotus Pier to retrieve my parents’ bodies.
"When you went to buy rations in that small town during our escape, a group of Wen cultivators caught up to us.
I noticed them early and left the spot where I’d been sitting to hide in a corner of the street. I didn’t get caught, but they were patrolling, and they would have surely bumped into you while you were getting us food.
“So I ran out and lured them away.”
But just as the Wei Wuxian of the past who’d extracted his golden core for Jiang Cheng had been unable to tell him the truth, the Jiang Cheng of the present could no longer bring himself to speak up.
Why continue to dwell on what has happened and in the past that can't be changed or make up for what you had done in hate against another now that you know? Jiang Cheng has made peace nothing more can be said or changed now between them.

yeah whenever i see people like "jgy and lxc MUST have been in a relationship its basically canon" im like...watch out babe your amatnormativity is showing
It's so tiring as well as uncomfortably misogynistic since they just... pretend Qin Su doesn't exist or act as if Jin Guangyao hadn't actively courted her to play up a romance with Lan Xichen that doesn't exist. And I suppose I wouldn't be so salty but the constant idea that having such faith in someone MUST mean it's romantic or have romantic connotations for it to somehow be meaningful.

Submission:
A lot of people think JGY and LXC’s relationship parallels wangxian’s—but it feels almost like JGY and WWX are opposites. Many people thought wwx was evil as the Yiling patriarch but he was actually good. Many people thought jgy was good as the chief cultivator but he was actually evil.
"A lot of people think JGY and LXC's relationship parallels wangxian's"
Tumblr media
I think too many get caught up in trying to make these relationships on a level of romance. When that is just not it in essence or intention. That is not to say it is any less as a platonic one only. I heavily support AND ENCOURAGE to view relationships other than romantically as the pinnacle of depth.
In that way, I think it's a discredit to some of these relationships to compare them to the genuine romance and through the lens of shipping only. Why not let it stand as its own? A betrayal of friendship is just as harmful hurtful and traumatizing to the self and your faculties and foundation of life you are certain with that the person you got along with as well as trusted was not or had never showed their true self to you once as well as actively manipulated you to help hurt others all for their own benefit.
To tell yourself and convince yourself a person is "good" despite the signs is something that exists without a comparison to romance. We can all understand that no matter the contextual truth of a relationship.
In the end, the relationship between these two is not what hurt Lan Xichen the most, it was his ignorance and his horror that he let it continue. I wouldn't say his reaction was heartbreak for what happened at all for Jin Guangyao as he realized and admitted the depths of the evil in him he couldn't deny in front of him he let continue.

Submission: Whom do you like the most and least out of JGY, NMJ, and LXC?
LXC (my stupid boy, I don't fuck with the obsession of wanting to torture him or show him his place in post canon fic scenarios if that's what you got out of his arc you missed a point and probably reread how cruel revenge is bad)
NMJ (I only like him in context of Niecest and Nieyao)
Jin Guangyao (绿茶婊。Deserves to be a worm in his next life)

Submission: Hot take (maybe?): Original Luo Binghe and Original Shen Qingqiu deserve each other about as much as nieyao.
Now, I fully admit in someways I have a difficult time saying original Luo Binghe and Shen Jiu have similar ideals. I think in a way Luo Binghe had become a "perfect disciple" to Shen Jiu as he has been impressionable from their first meeting and took his words to heart. Shen Jiu did raise someone to be as hateful cruel and cut throat as he viewed the world to be. Luo Binghe became everything that Shen Jiu saw and put into the world.
He raised a fellow abuser in the position of being a teacher. In that way I hesitate that these two deserve each other the same way as Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao who at least were two adults who had formed their world views. Out of the pure intention of torture porn for Luo Binge to go through to the point of also doing that himself is deeply entrenched in toxic masculinity and also speaks of Shang Qinghua's own nihilistic mindset (as well as us the audience knowing of his apathetic parents as the only glimpse we see him as another person not an ambiguous "author").
In that way, I think Luo Binghe is a stand in of how hard it can be for victims to fight away from the violence that gets associated with them as well as the stigma that they're not worth being cared for any longer if they are not strong and grow into that cruelty almost as an expectation from society. Shen Jiu and original Luo Binghe are horrendous and sad renditions that plague the idea of what someone who has been abused should act according to societal and hypocritical standards society has set.

Can you tell me why you like Lan Xichen, if that doesn't bother you?
I know why the fandom at large like him, but I disagree very hard with the "N°1 Wangxian shipper, best wingman, the only person in this cast that has eyes" thing they've got going on because all of this is directly contradicted by canon, and I'm just not a fan of blissfully ignorant characters that are fine with staying blind to the faults of others depending on how convenient it is for them.
I may be exaggerating a bit, but his "You were his only mistake" speech while advocating and protecting and giving the benefit of the doubt to Jin Guangyao made me a little bit salty, and the implications as to how he participated/supported the siege and Lan Wangji's punishment didn't really help.
I usually enjoy your takes and often agree with you, so I figured I'd ask, maybe you'd provide some insight in his character that I missed?
Hello anon,
I think part of this does simply come down to personally what type of person I myself am able to tolerate and want to see the potential of capability and being better. I do agree on with Wei Wuxian as he observes Lan Xichen's faith in Jin Guangyao, is that he unlike him was able to interact with memories of Nie Mingjue and the only reason he himself was able to believe that Jin Guangyao wasn't what he presented as. Lan Xichen isn't presented as a character to despise even in his ignorance which yes, is a factor of his one comfortable position, yet he is a kind simple man.
Simple kind men, are not meant to be politicians and should not be as they are easily manipulated. Yet the people that Wei Wuxian commends and listens to are simple, kind people. He understands very well where Lan Xichen himself comes from as a party close to Jin Guangyao and as an outside party to Wei Wuxian. They don't know each other, Wei Wuxian also is not a grudge holding person for slights against himself because they are wrong. Why would he himself care for what is not true? He knows who and what he is, whether it's liked by outsiders or not. He knows how to work with either reaction and is not sensitive to what is said about him, he also doesn't need others to take up that mantel in his stead, what he appreciates is those that trust in him as he is to support that.
Wei Wuxian also understands the casual misunderstandings perpetuated, some of which he did continue once he came back and hid for a time as Mo Xuanyu. He didn't think his unconscious love from when he was you g would reawaken, he WAS fucking around to disgust Lan Wangji to abandon him. He did not expect Lan Wangji to be caring and as loving as he was because the man hadn't so openly been anything like that in their youth.
Lan Xichen had the privilege of knowing this about Lan Wangji, hence his protectiveness and assumptions. While Wei Wuxian did not. It's a case of great misunderstanding on part of what Lan Xichen knew against what Wei Wuxian knows. As the audience we DO have a greater privilege than either of them because we get insights into both's actions and thoughts the other has no idea of. They are outside observers of the other.
Do I think Lan Xichen held a grudge towards Wei Wuxian either? No, but he was weary of Wei Wuxian's intentions to his brother given the outside view he had of them. Subconsciously yes we see that Wei Wuxian greatly loves Lan Wangji, but that is not apparent for Lan Xichen given the history he had seen. He had at one point thought a friendship with Wei Wuxian would be good for Lan Wangji who didn't ever seek companions, yet the only thing he was seeing and told was the hurt and struggle Lan Wangji struggled with. He had no investment or friendship with Wei Wuxian to think of other context.
Wei Wuxian also gets this, it is why he is terrified of the potential hurt Lan Wangji had been put through unintentionally because of himself and the assumptions of outsiders as well that influenced both of their hesitance to be open of their growing feelings, trust and love.
We all want to think of the best in those close to us. Wei Wuxian understands how that becomes so natural to the point of blinding yourself to the worst. It is what he did when it came to Jiang Cheng who continued to escalate his hate and actions towards Wei Wuxian who gave Jiang Cheng the benefit of doubt until he no longer could. And it is what Lan Xichen is faced with when it comes to the whole of Jin Guangyao's crimes exposed. Wei Wuxian was the perpetual stain and hurt for Jiang Cheng and did take the blame Jiang Cheng put upon him while reasoning with himself that Jiang Cheng had such a right and what good would it do for him to complain.
Lan Xichen trapped himself in the blindness of wanting Jin Guangyao to be reasonable in his choices in a very unfair world that condemned his class. He did know that Lan Wangji loved Wei Wuxian, he was weary of that love due to not knowing the whole. And why at the end he is disgusted, horrified, hurt in his own self snd yes embarrassed with his stubborn assumptions and blindness. He is not proud of that and what he is torn up over at the end. It's not the great tragic friendship he supposedly lost, it is his own stubbornness and ignorance he let overcome him and what he allowed to go on for too long. He is forced to see his one sided idea of Wei Wuxian was wrong, he has no hate over that, he to a point had seen Wei Wuxian as an influence for Lan Wangji to open up, yet lost his own faith in that due to his assumed biases.
He to a fault is coddling to the point of it being offensively infantilizing to Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian understands the why of this and also is completely logical in understanding as to why Lan Xixchen thinks as such. He thinks Lan Xichen is a good man, because he is, whether we the audience like it or not in the logic of their world Wei Wuxian understands the mechanism of Lan Wangji's punishment as well and the cruelty it was for the society they are stuck in that is slow to change. Simple kind men are not made to be in a world of intricacy and conspiracy because it is more complicated than they know. Good intentions and offer of protection is dangerous when you have not been exposed to cruelty that can personally hurt you and take advantage of you when you are ignorant to the extent of the backlash.
I think this is also why Wei Wuxian in the end does respect Lan Xichen he had been there as well. He can't condemn something that he had been a part of at one point and had been taken advantage himself by multiple others.

I think it is slightly overlooked that Lan Wangji, at first, had been upset that someone as unexpected (to him) as Wei Wuxian could embody everything he admired in what he saw as good and right in the world. He had a very traditional expectation of what that was supposed to present itself as. It wasn't supposed be anything like Wei Wuxian, detachment is what he was told was to cherish.
Yet everything he idealized was in Wei Wuxian. He was thrown off over this and I think this is what he has to come to terms with as he fell deeply in love. It's what made him hesitant in his youth about what propriety was and the conflation in the world that propriety means good as well. It's what makes his core frustration within Xuanwu Cave spill over as he was upset that everything he loved at the time was continually what he was told was the wrong way to be.
I also think it is at that point while not fully understanding Wei Wuxian as a person he accepts his own love of him, and why during the supervisory office he realizes his own assumptions of righteousness hurt Wei Wuxian and caused Wei Wuxian to wall himself up from him for many years. Especially because before Wei Wuxian had taken his surly interactions and harshness in good nature and affectionately until then. He had unintentionally insulted Wei Wuxian's own good nature by clinging to expected but cold proprietary.
He doesn't say what Wei Wuxian himself did to those he killed was wrong, but that he had the potential to lapse out or his chosen moral code. Which does wound Wei Wuxian emotionally as he also idealized what Lan Wangji was as a person and believed they would both see that they were nothing unwavering there. Lan Wangji's own hesitation to drop his assumptions of proprietary meaning moral is his own realization that he has deeply misjudged Wei Wuxian.
After that point he tries to be gentle and probing in his inquiries to Wei Wuxian but Wei Wuxian has already been hurt and put a barrier between them. One that doesn't fall until they are older and Wei Wuxian is revived for Lan Wangji to grow into his own comfortability in what he chooses to follow as his moral path and Wei Wuxian is able to also lower his defenses as he goes back to praising Lan Wangji as a good person and they are both able to stand as equals in meeting the others thoughts and knowing they are able to naturally gravitate to the other in shared moral understanding without fear of offense.
