#desperately need to turn it around this is what im rocking with rn #class 1. finished everything for it but then skipped a class so i need to write a one page make up summary or else i go down by half a grad #class 2. have to present on my final project tomorrow (i haven't started it but can't really change my topic bc i already talked w the prof #project is due monday #class 3. final project is a week late (didn't email bc i kept thinking id just get it done and then didn't) + second part is a day late #class 4. never turned in a final project proposal and have to present on it next monday (haven't started)

mutual steve mike hatred is another one of my favorite st fic tropes. the scene in jackrabbit underneath where mike goes 'i still don't like you' and steve goes 'i don't like you either' and mike is so taken aback because he's a kid and you're not supposed to say that to kids but neither of them are capable of being the bigger person with each other ever because they're both massive bitches and it's like magnets with the same polarity. i think steve should have beef with a thirteen year old forever just because he thinks mike sucks. scene in secrets i have held in my heart where he and jonathan figure out will's gay and steve goes 'i mean come on will can do so much better than mike.' being an ally comes second to being a mike hater. it's never not funny.

rereading my favorite fic of all time (in a strange land) and i'll probably make a longer post of all my favorite parts later because i truly believe it's a masterpiece but in the meantime i want to talk about how these two scenes completely inform the way i think about steve:

these two scenes comprise THEE steve thesis. to me. canon literally stopped caring about it at all after season 2 but you have to wonder WHY he would be so unwilling to talk about what happened and WHY nancy would be so stifled by that -- this fic presents the most obvious and deeply human answer: pretending at normalcy and like nothing really happened is just as much a coping mechanism for him as refusing to pretend and affirming that something did is one for nancy, because whatever he may be, steve isn't ruthless. he's is presented since season 1 as the epitome of an average joe, 'cul-de-sac steve,' so like even thematically it makes sense that having his faith in institutions and in the general decency of people and in his ability to go back to the way things were completely upended is genuinely so terrifying to him in a way it wouldn't be for characters who already resent and have been hurt by the way things are. steve could kill a monster but he couldn't kill a man, steve can accept that monsters are real but not that the people who brought them into the world have changed it forever. you have to understand that part of the reason why steve st3 makes me insane is bc i read this fic and went oh my god THAT'S who steve is and THAT'S why he is the way that he is and then canon was like no it's actually just because he's stupid and bad at fighting. biting and clawing and kicking. still a canon steve enjoyer now but post s2 fanfiction writers understand him in a way that the duffers never will.

And more of Bruce suffering a hell of his own creation as he tries to figure out how to parent Timothy "latchkey kid" Drake, who doesn't respect the concept of having parental supervision in general and more specifically Bruce's authority as his new guardian at all, because Tim was basically his caretaker for the entire beginning of his tenure as Robin

Any kind of Parental Action would have Bruce choking in his own hypocrisy. Like... imagine trying to get your teenage son to go to bed when he's been putting your ass down for naps for like, years, by that point. Imagine telling him to eat healthier when at 13 years old he was helping your butler with designing your meal plan 'cause you were too depressed to eat

Bruce gently tries to get him to stop working on a case to take a break, and Tim raises a single withering eyebrow (he learned this from Alfred) and Bruce immediately shuts up. Tim only listens to Bruce when he wants to and being legally adopted by the man hasn't changed that

taylor swift’s work wouldn’t be nearly as insufferable if she wasn’t constantly trying to present herself as some sort of tortured underdog. like, okay, she has endured hardships, and a lot of people, especially white men, are shitty towards her for purely misogynistic reasons. that sucks, i agree. but she’s never been an underdog before. she was born to well-off parents who did everything they could to start her music career when she was barely even a teenager, an opportunity that lots of people would kill for. now she’s extremely famous and wealthy, and everything she releases is destined to sell millions of copies and receive glowing reviews in nearly every publication. she is not an underdog, and i have trouble believing she’s particularly “tortured.” she’s not even an alcoholic, despite claiming to be one on the opening track of her new album! people like to defend her lyrics by saying she’s just playing a character, which i don’t believe for a second, but even if she was, i don’t think i want to listen to someone like swift play the character of a tortured underdog, not when there’s so many musicians out there who are actually tortured underdogs. it comes across as hollow. “you wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me,” sung by one of the wealthiest, most famous, most critically acclaimed musicians in the world, who was born to loving parents who personally helped her start her career, who once said she’d never been to therapy because she “just feels very sane.” if you’re going to play a character, maybe pick one who we’re not supposed to pity.
