some songs I've been vibing with lately
Potion Approaching - Arctic Monkeys
The guitar riffs and the drums in this song are just so stupid good. What a headbanger. I especially love how it builds in intensity during the verses & then becomes a sort of driving (maybe even white stripes like?) brum brum brum thing in the chorus. I don't really know how to explain it, but it's so good. And then, of course, Alex Turner goes off in the lyricism department. I mean, "if I could be someone else for a week, I'd spend it chasing after you." Hello????
Under the Table by Fiona Apple
Something I love so much about Fiona Apple's writing is that, no matter how sad or heartbroken she may be, she remains so unapologetic about who she is. It's never "I wish I was someone else so you could love me," it's "kick me under the table all you want, I WON'T SHUT UP!!!" She never apologizes or acts demure about her own intelligence. The line in this song, "I'd like to buy you a pair of pillowed soled hiking boots, to help you with your climb. Or rather to help the bodies that you step over along your route, so they won't hurt like mine," I mean,, Jesus Christ how does someone even write that??
If It Makes You Happy by Sheryl Crow
I bought my mom a Sheryl Crow CD recently, which made me go back & listen to a lot of her music that I hadn't really heard since I was a kid. SHE IS SO UNDERRATED!!! Highly recommend listening to her debut album -- Tuesday Night Music Club -- in full, if you are unfamiliar with her work. Someone needs to make her songs go viral on tiktok so we can experience the Sheryl Crow resurgence that the world really needs. Anyway, has boygenius ever talked about Not Strong Enough being inspired by Sheryl Crow's Strong Enough To Be My Man? Seems like that's the obvious point of inspiration, right?
Black Coffee In Bed by Squeeze
Been back on my britpop shit, what can I say?
All I Think About Now by Pixies
Kim Deal hive rise up!! Her voice sounds so beautiful on this track, especially with all that heavy guitar playing behind her. I also love the writing on this song, even though it's very simple. Everything about it just beautifully encapsulates what it feels like to miss/yearn/remember a happier, more simple time in your life.

top ten songs of august & some thoughts
1. The Path - Lorde
2. Los Angeles - Haim
3. All I Want - Joni Mitchell
4. California - Lorde
5. You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio - Joni Mitchell
6. Stoned at the Nail Salon - Lorde
7. The Steps - Haim
8. Carey - Joni Mitchell
9. Solar Power - Lorde
10. People's Parties - Joni Mitchell
Well folks, it seems I've been pretty much exclusively listening to Lorde, Haim, and Joni Mitchell this month. I'm kind of surprised David Bowie didn't make an appearance on this list, considering I've been listening to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust every time I clean my apartment. Evidently not too much cleaning has been happening over here...Either way, the ladies won this round.
Let's start with Lorde. The general consensus seems to be that Solar Power is her weakest album, maybe even a bad album. I obviously don't feel this way. Is Solar Power her best album? Definitely not. Is it bad? No, I don't think so. Solar Power is kind of a mess, to be fair. For one thing, the production is....questionable. Honestly, I've never been a huge fan of Jack Antonoff's production. At worst his work is messy, overdone, muddy, and chaotic (think Reputation). At best, his production fades into the background without adding to or enhancing the overall listening experience (think Folklore). Solar Power is the later. The sound is a little boring, a little repetitive. But, that doesn't break the album for me. I've dealt with Jack Antonoff's production for years (even celebrated his production when it's actually warranted i.e. Melodrama), and I can continue to deal with it. To me, the larger issue with Solar Power is its thematic incoherence. What is Lorde really trying to say in this album? I don't know. It's kind of all over the place thematically, and the ideas that are there are not conceptualized or drawn out enough to create any real, nuanced, or epiphanic meaning. And the thing is, while Lorde is a great writer, she's not very subtle, so when she really has something to say (as she does in Pure Heroin and Melodrama), she shines. Sadly, that's not the case with Solar Power. I can recognize where Solar Power fails and still enjoy the album, because there are still some really special moments here. Not everything has to be all good or all bad. Not every Lorde album will be Melodrama, and that's okay.
Now to Haim. I won't have as much to say here because I exhausted myself writing a single paragraph about Solar Power lol. Women in Music Pt.III is not a perfect album. Like most double albums, its a little too long. There are definitely filler songs here, but the songs that are good are really fucking good. I just really love this album lot. Idk what else to say about it. The Haim sisters are incredibly gifted musicians and songwriters, and this is their best project since their debut.
And finally, Joni Mitchell. I love her. She's the greatest. What else can I say?

"I think I'm sick and I don't know if my ailment has a name. It's just me sitting and staring at the Internet or the television, interspersed trying not to do that, then lying about what I've been doing. And I will get so excited about something that the excitement overwhelms me. And I can't sleep or do anything and I just am in love with everything, but can't figure out how to make myself work in the world." - Mistress America (2015)
