bing bong i just finished watching severance and now it’s all i can think about as i clock in to my 9 to 5

but yeah kind of obsessed with every single character in this show

dylan’s family. mark’s growth. irving’s switch. helly’s freaking reveal. all of it is just so good.

Just thinking about how love, or the absence of it, helped the innies to break from the carefully constructed routines and policies set by Lumen.

Irving's outie has clearly been trying to break through his own consciousness, but he had the farthest to go in terms of how his innie clung to the Lumen principles and rules. And then he fell in love with Burt. I'm not totally convinced they haven't met and been in love on the outside, but regardless, the versions of themselves inside fell in love. And the moment Irv sees that the Burt he loves will in effect be killed by retirement from Lumen, he's ready to burn the place to the ground.

Dylan is always full of conspiracy theories but very little desire for action. But then he has just a brief moment with his child from the outside and he's ready to risk everything inside in order to see him again, to know more about his son.

Mark got into this for love. The grief of losing his wife drove him to accept such drastic measures of forgetting her, even for a while. But it's his love for Petey, the loss of his best friend on the inside and the connection they form even briefly on the outside, that causes Mark to question and pushback against Lumen.

Helly is a much more complex situation because we don't really understand Helena's motivations. We only have the PR version. I'd like to think that being raised as an Eagan made her cold and haughty and full of the self-righteous fire that comes from being raised by rich egomaniacs. But there's little room for love and human connection in that type of upbringing. Helly fights to survive - to escape - and eventually harms herself just to punish the woman who put her in this situation to begin with. It's the absence of love, of compassion for self in either direction, that drives her. Until of course she begins to bond with the others and they begin fighting for each other.
