Season’s Greetings from MCA!
Earlier this month we sent out our annual holiday mailing, something the firm has done since the end of its first year in 2019. This year, through the graphic design and the messaging, we celebrated the life and legacy of my friend and mentor, Tom Payette. Read more.

Aga Khan Hospital Dar es Salaam
Views of the hospital complex from the recently completed road expansions that were part of the Selander Bridge project. The Phase 2 building is now the focal point at the new traffic circle, and the Ufukoni skybridge will serve as a gateway for the campus for those coming from the city center.

Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam Ufukoni Skybridge
Design drawings for the Ufukoni Road skybridge, currently under construction. When completed, this bridge will serve as a gateway to the hospital complex and a marker within the larger-scale urban transit framework that the city implemented with the recently completed Selander Bridge project.

St. Peter’s Church, Dar es Salaam Architect: H.L. Shaw, 1962
I made a pilgrimage to this building yesterday during some downtime on a business trip. Many times in the past I had driven past this church and wanted to have a closer look. Unfortunately, it was locked, even though it was 16.30 on a Sunday afternoon, so I could only get glimpses of the interior through the wonderfully perforated facade. A beautifully conceived and executed building that is aging gracefully. See Iwan Baan’s Instagram feed for some shots of the interior: https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ZYvq2lnWW/

Recent / ongoing work at the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam. With the recent widening of Ufukoni Road from two to four lanes as part of the government’s Selander Bridge project, the hospital needed a pedestrian skybridge to provide safe connectivity between the hospital and its second site, used for parking, outpatient clinics, and other ancillary functions. The new bridge will extend the campus’ design vocabulary, including ceramic block brise-soleil, and offer beautiful ocean views.

MCA formed three years ago in early 2019. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have committed and engaged clients with challenging projects that continue to sustain us through these difficult times. As we reflect on completed work and look to the years ahead, we reaffirm the value and centrality of people in everything we do. And we believe in the power of design at any scale – from an individual room to an entire city – to transform people’s lives.
To better articulate our values, showcase our work, and share our thinking, we have launched an entirely redesigned website under a new domain name. You can read more about the redesign, which includes firm identity materials, on our new blog, “Perspectives.” This Tumblr, under its new handle, will continue to be a repository of images and projects that inspire us – it’s our visual journal. Thank you for following us and stay tuned for more!

After Saturday’s post, I decided to see if anyone else had posted using the “cognitivemapping” hashtag. Looks like there was a Columbia GSAPP course in 2017 where students were mapping their commutes in NYC. This one in particular stood out for its crisp graphics and use of photo-montage.

Townscaper
A Sunday meditation ... I stumbled across this a couple days ago and was enchanted. Starting with a watery expanse and an irregular grid, one can build endless varieties of places resembling the Venetian lagoon, medieval villages, or more fanciful environments. Play is user-directed, but the form-making is ultimately determined by some very smart algorithms that for the most part (with judicious editing) produce coherent buildings, ramparts, and plazas, though at times the grid geometry can result in some odd pinch points with the buildings. The developer (@oskarstalberg) provides a very intuitive touch-based interface with controls for selecting colors, controlling sun angles, and turning on snow. The experience is like a digital version of playing with Legos, with a built-in rendering engine. –MC

20 Days of Wordle
I was inspired to make this after reading a recent New Yorker article about Wordle and how certain games can serve as kind of cognitive mapping. Here is how I’ve fared for the past 20 days, including a few failures. –MC
