I wrote a thing, an Angbang thing. How long has it been since that happened? Too long. But darling @crackinthecup hounded me out of my lair, and so this has come to pass. I'm sure all of Angband rejoices (though perhaps not sweet Mairon...)
POINTS OF AUTHORITY > Read on AO3
NSFW, NSF people who only like fluffy Angbang tw: non-con, or extremely dub-con
If nothing else, let crackinthecup's wonderful review inspire you: Came for the porn, stayed for the emotional evisceration.
ENJOY <3

The Star Kindler and Lord of the Breath of Arda

Chestnuts; Chestnut indicates time to take on the duty of being a provider for ourselves as well as the community. They all symbolize innocence in some places due to how they were used as toys throughout the years. Blueberries; All kinds of berries have symbolized the blood of gods and mythical creatures over the years because of their heavy stains. Blueberries, and blackberries, have before been the berry of pain, remorse, and grief in Europe, however, sometimes you will see them show up as a voice of God and a symbol of divine love from other places on the globe.
I wanted Manwe and Varda to look a bit like their "beastly" forms but not too much as I wanted to have their more humanized forms separated from it, yes, a bit like Jekyll and Hyde, but still keep some of the main things from it so they can still be recognized if you know what to look after.

In the last chapter of Open Wounds Maedhros refuses to eat. Was it because he had lost his appetite or was he deliberately denying himself food despite being hungry?
Hmm, I think he was probably on a pendulum swinging between the two scenarios you describe. In the last chapter we see a bit of a regression in the healing process, a worrying 'wobble' in his mental health as he is more cognisant of the trauma he has been through. I think it quite natural therefore that someone going through a lot of mental anguish would lose their appetite - it is common when we are stressed or very anxious.
But I think there was also a self-destructive element in there too - in that last chapter in particular, Maedhros struggles to come to terms with the things that were done to him, and the things that he was forced to do to others during his captivity. Let's not mince words - he hates himself for it. Feeling simultaneously like a victim of abuse, and a perpetrator of it upon others, is excruciating for him mentally. And a part of that self-hatred comes out in how he interacts with others; becoming withdrawn or sullen, feeling unworthy of attention or comfort, denying himself food, etc.
So indeed I think that both drivers of the behaviour were at play here - both in physical loss of appetite due to stress, and the self-destructive little hook that kept on digging at him.

More concept sketches for Maedhros post-Angband needing skeletal support/correction. I focused more on the spine/neck braces this time, I'll draw some more slings and shoulder braces ideas at some point.
Disabled characters series
Closer look + notes/rambling under the cut
The first sketch is really just a preparatory one for the second. It's based pretty directly on an existing scoliosis brace called the Milwaukee brace, which used to be the most common and is still used sometimes for, I believe, high curvatures, which would be the case for Maedhros after being pulled by the arm for so long. The second sketch is a try at a more ornamented design, as Curufin and whichever other Noldor creating it would strive to make it beautiful.

The brace opens at the back and requires some flexibility to put on, so it wouldn't be a very early brace for Maedhros (that and the healers/smiths would need some time to attain a good design). It's geared toward correction and not immobilization, he can still somewhat turn his head but it's supported enough to lessen the pain. Leather pads can be added in various places to help with correction, so I gave him a shoulder pad, but he'd still wear some kind of sling or brace for his arm with it, I think.
The bottom sketch is a more ornamented brace meant for formal occasions, not everyday wear. It's aimed at support only, not correction, I think Maedhros could/would only wear it on a day where he's going to be sitting around and not really moving, like the Mereth Aderthad (he's in no shape or mood for dancing). And only later on, once his spine is more stable. This one also opens in the back with laces and various clasps and it's a lot lighter both visually and literally. I think brass would be a cool metal for this one to go with the leather (would it be solid enough? I have no idea).

There is a transcription of my little notes in alt, but I've basically said it all in the text.
Help I put too much research into this 😭

Need y’all to know that in the 1970’s a letter to the editor was published in Daily Telegraph where the author offhandedly used the phrase “Tolkien-like gloom” to describe an area with barren trees and JRRT himself wrote back an incensed rebuttal at the use of his name in a context that suggested anything negative about trees.
