My Mind on my Money and my Money on my Mind
Who knew Snoop Dogg was talking about etymology?
Mind descends from Old English mynd or gemynd meaning “thought”, “memory”, “record”, “intellect”, “mind”, etc., from Proto-Germanic *mundiz or *gamundiz, both from the Proto-Indo-European *méntis “thought”, a nominal derivative of the root *men “think”.
This same root also produced Latin mens, oblique stem ment-, the source of the English “mental”. A causative suffix *-eye- added to *men produced Latin moneō “I advise”, “I remind”, “I warn”, the basis of the noun monēta “adviser”. In ancient Rome there was a temple dedicated to the goddess Juno Moneta, “Juno the Adviser”, also referred to as simply Monēta. This temple was used to produce coins, and so the noun monēta acquired the meaning “coin” or “money”, which became Old French moneie, borrowed into English as money. Monēta was also borrowed directly into Proto-Germanic as *munitō or *munitą, with the meaning “coin, money”. This became Old English mynet, and thence Modern English mint, with the meaning shifting to “place where coins are produced”, essentially circling back around to a meaning closer to the Latin monēta.
This PIE root was very productive. Other roots derived from the same source include automatic, from *méntis plus the prefix auto-, literally “self-willed”, as well as monster from Latin monstrum “divine omen”, “sign”, “abnormal shape”, “monster”, from moneō plus an instrumental suffix -(s)trum. Mantra is also derived from this root, borrowed from Sanskrit Mántra “sacred text”, “song of praise to a deity”, “incantation”, etc’, from Proto-Indo-European *méntrom from *men + -trom, an instrumental suffix, thus something like “instrument of thought”
Another surprising descendant of this root is the brand name Mazda, which is said to be derived in part from the name Ahura Mazda. Mazda in this context meant “wisdom”, from Proto-Indo-European *mn̥s-dʰh₁-éh₂ from the same *men root plus *dʰeh₁ “put” plus the nominal suffix -eh₁, thus something like “what is put in the mind”

Reminder that switching mediums (even just a different tablet or program), parts of your overall artstyle can change. This doesn’t make it any better or worse, necessarily, only different, as you may need to use a different process. Try not to worry about the end product during this transition, and remember that you’re constantly learning. Try to find enjoyment in the process, and the rest will follow <3
