Also this isn't in Speak, Memory but his grandfather was justice minister under Alexander II and therefore responsible for Nikolai Chernyshevsky getting incarcerated in Siberia but Nabokov (Vladimir, that is) repeatedly ridicules Chernyshevsky's work, which isn't surprising on a political level but didn't the Nabokovs already do enough to Chernyshevsky?!

Speak, Memory is so funny bc Nabokov is talking about his childhood and mentioning that his family had two tennis courts (but the older one wasn't maintained!), their dog was the grandchild (or granddog...) of one of Chekhov's dogs, people were always asking his dad to do things in the government and it is all so casual and matter-of-fact. I don't object morally, it's better than if he'd pretended to be the salt of the earth etc and surely his readers were already well-aware of his background but still lmao.
