Cloud Strife is the most confusing character I've experienced recently.
Because he's like 5 different personalities that feel like they cycle in and out of dominance depending on what serves the plot best
Cloud the ex-SOLDIER; a blunt no-nonsense guy who rides motorcycles, shrugs, and says the fate of the planet 'isn't his problem'
Cloud the JRPG hero; a survivor of the destruction of Nibelheim, chasing after Sephiroth to stop him from destroying anything else and willing to do whatever he can to achieve that goal (even if it makes him look silly). The leader of a party.
Cloud the Sephiroth clone; a barely-functional puppet going in and out of mind-control, desperate for Hojo's approval, and following Sephiroth's instructions subconsciously
Cloud the JRPG hero who realises he's a Sephiroth clone; scared of himself, basically a walking identity crisis
The 'real' Cloud; a country boy who aspired for greatness but had to deal with the consequences of not being 'special'. A little awkward and dorky but well-meaning. (I haven't gotten to the point of the game where I've met him yet)
It's really hard to figure out if he's supposed to be a mixture of all 5 personalities at all times, or he basically switches personalities on a dime in an intentionally-jarring way.
Like, Cid has a line on the Highwind about how he seemed to be a weird and inconsistent character, but up until that point it felt more like Cloud was a victim of script rewrites or something rather than intentionally-confusing characterisation that actually the characters notice too.
Not having a graceful translation of any potential nuances probably doesn't help.

Wonderful Precure continues to be hilarious when you have to think about how the backstory works behind the scenes.
Yuki: "Hi, magical mirror stone? I saw you gave that silly dog the ability to turn into a human girl to stop the wild animal infestation. Can you give me that too? I don't want Mayu to get hurt."
"Great, now time to beat the shit out of a bear"
"huh. turns out beating the shit out of the bear didn't stop it. That was my bad. For now, I'm just gonna walk away elegantly and mysteriously and tell Mayu to stay away. I am very cool. I can't wait to drink more milk."

If it wasn't for Madoka Magica, I would be under the impression Gen Urobuchi is some sort of satirical comedy writer, because his Fate works are some of the most unintentionally funny things.
Fate/Zero you got shit like Kiritsugu going "I have to shoot down my mentor's plane with a rocket launcher for The Sake Of Peace because everyone on board has turned into a vampire zombie", or Kirei setting up cuckoldry drama and getting immense satisfaction from watching it.
And then Lostbelt 3 you have Spartacus doing a big heroic sacrifice by being thrown up in the air and exploding himself to stop a meteor, or (the best part), Jing Ke showing up and confronting the God-Emperor of China and saying "your power is cool and all but look at this" and pulling out a fucking smartphone

random japanese cultural bullshit is that cats speak like they're 19th century aristocrats because there's this very famous japanese satirical novel about a cat that talks like that
it's just one of those things that occasionally pops up
also the author of the novel is a character in The Great Ace Attorney
anyway that's why Morgana Persona 5 uses 'wagahai'

my incredibly cowardly centrist take is that the issues we're dealing with are too big and important to decide your biggest public enemies are the people who aren't online enough to give up on Harry Potter

people act like their superhero story of the week isn't a power fantasy, but it does always tend to start with "the hero gets superpowers and as an unintended side-effect the next day becomes the sexiest man alive with huge muscles and probably a huge dick", it's almost like a fetish
in related news, i decided to watch the season finale of solo levelling
it really is that shameless

dumb wonderful precure story ideas i came up with just now
Yuki tricks Komugi into telling her all about Precure because Komugi still doesn't understand the concept of 'keeping a secret'
Daifuku, the intellectual rabbit that he is, is on a quest to understand why humans only poop in private. Komugi translates for Satoru and he's just like "...oh"

it would be really funny if when Yuki gets her human form, she just blankly tells Mayu's mom "oh yeah, I'm your cat" and not bother keeping it a secret at all. Because she thinks it'd make Mayu even more anxious to hide it from her family or something.
If Komugi is the hyperactive little sister, Yuki is the big sister who just wants to get straight to the point. It'll be a fun dynamic.

somebody made a comment on my gohan video about how it totally makes sense that gohan would lose his 'gains' if he wasn't training and I probably don't get it because I'm a woman
and besides the fact that, you know, Dragon Ball is a work of fiction and gohan is a half-alien and this stuff doesn't have to follow real-life biology, it really gave me insight into the gym nut subset of DBZ fans
Like, people are offended at the idea that Gohan could be a musclebound warrior without going to the gym often because then it feels like it undervalues their own work on how often they train at the gym to be like Goku. Why do they have to work so hard and so consistently to get strong when Gohan can do it without even trying?
and once again, ignoring the fact this is a work of fiction, it just shows how...people have different priorities on what matters to them, I guess.
For me it's like, Gohan has spent years going to conferences and writing research papers and having a wife and a baby who was flying for a bit before she couldn't...all that is hard work too. Arguably even harder than working out, because you have to use your brain to do all that successfully. I think he still deserves to get to be cool because the fact he manages all that is cool too.
And really, what sense of narrative satisfaction do you get if a character gets to be strong by saying "I was training my body really hard for several years off-screen"? If they don't even do anything or change anything or learn anything?
I can tilt my head and imagine how people see DBZ in that light but god it sounds far less interesting

I do have gohan beast brainrot now, which is kind of weird since a lot of fans seem to hate the form. and that's fair and all, it's just-
the manga is going the direction of "he can use it whenever he wants now" and I do kind of wonder what they'd even think the kind of 'training' piccolo gave him to learn to control it was
like I wouldn't think he'd have trouble controlling himself while in the form, more that you'd wonder if it would be hard to figure out how to transform into it again. because of the whole rage thing. it's not like it's easy to just get angry on command
and anyway if the narrative behind gohan was "he needs to learn to keep his anger under control" that'd literally just be what they're doing with broly
but it just makes you think what he had to learn and train for to the point he can literally tap into 'beast mode' at will. it feels like it'd be really relevant to the direction of his character, so it's a bit disappointing it happens off-screen maybe
i mean yeah, of course it's relevant to his character. he gets his own unique form from the power of being gohan. any sort of discussion about it and what it is and how he can master it is indirectly a discussion about gohan. there's no 'super saiyan' in the name or anything this time
so that's probably why I'm so interested in seeing what kind of narrative that would be if it was ever discussed on-screen
i don't trust toyotaro's writing ability to pull it off well; even when the stories are decent they still feel like exposition dumps and the characterisation is slightly off, but at least it's nice they're giving us more fuel for endless fanfic discussion

DB things I didn’t realise without my friend Sparda, Part 2
Super Saiyan might have been inspired to be gold as a reference to the fact it would first be shown off in colour for Golden Week (a nationwide holiday period in Japan)
I don't know how far in advance Jump authors know they're going to get a coloured chapter for the week's issue, but I can imagine them giving Toriyama the coveted cover page and colour chapter slot for one of the biggest holiday periods since Dragon Ball's popularity was at its peak.
Toriyama often doesn't think about colours in his manga designs, which was why characters would sometimes be pretty inconsistent with colouring. I can imagine when he first drew Goku as a Super Saiyan he didn't have a concrete idea of what colour the hair should be at all, just that it wouldn't be filled in so his assistant didn't have to spend time inking it.
But then when he realised the first time he'd have to decide a colour for it would be during the issue that would come out during Golden Week, he thought "why not gold then?"
and it stuck

It's so weird that Wonderful Precure is such a low-stakes simplistic narrative and yet I don't feel like I'm being talked down to. At least in this most recent episode.
I'd say it's because of...the direction, maybe? But I'm not even that familiar with the staff for Precure anymore, there's a lot of people who came from Kitaro and Digimon Ghost Game and it's probably a really good sign they can bring out some really well-made episodes of anime.
So far I'm impressed just how deep they've done their research to make this the most pet anime of all time. Even if it hasn't hooked me like Hirogaru Sky, it sounds like it might be a fun ride.

this just makes me want to see Berserker Cu even more
And so Cú Chullain (Irish Goku) was seized by the warp-spasm (Irish Super Saiyan State) to defend Ulster (That weird rocky landscape that they’re always fighting in in DBZ but like… y’know, Ireland).

Legends Kalos sounds cool
although I am just as confused as everyone else they're skipping Unova for a new game. I was gonna say "maybe it's cause Gen 5 didn't sell as well", but there's really only a small difference and that's with the fact BW was still on the DS so people who had DPP didn't have as big a reason to 'upgrade'. I don't think Gen 5 is 'unpopular', either, besides the people still whining about Vanillite. So I do wonder why they seemed to leave the Unova throwbacks for the SV DLC and even then mostly as little references.
Maybe it's cause they didn't want to explore more history of Unova because it's America and you wonder how they're going to deal with...things?
Although people did bring up a good point that they could be releasing a BW remake this year that they'll stealth-drop without much promotion because they quickly outsourced it again. That'd suck, but I wouldn't put it past them.
I think my biggest question is what the gameplay loop is going to be. Since Legends Arceus mixed that up and it sounds like this will too. "A Pokemon game about the making of a city" could be a lot of games.
Pokemon with resource management/scavenging, where you go out to find items and Pokemon to help build the city
Pokemon GTA or like Ubisoft open-world where it's all about exploring everything in the city
Something to do with AZ and the war stuff
dunno

Hi, Tumblr. It’s Tumblr. We’re working on some things that we want to share with you.
AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.
Here are the important details:
We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner.
We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc.
Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
If you have concerns, please read through the Help Center doc linked above and contact us via Support if you still have questions.

toxic viral social media is about going through the replies looking for the most ridiculous takes possible so you can say "see! i knew people who had a different opinion to me are Literally Insane! This just gives me the validation I was looking for to not take anyone who disagrees with me seriously"
It feels so empowering because it gives you the justification to stop treating people as human
