"You were scared? Of what?"
"That Mira was right. And she was. Of course she was."

Clary sighed, staring out the attic window. Her best friend had finally convinced his separated wife to sign divorce papers, but he felt further from her than ever.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
The only name that had ever felt right to hang from her lips. It had broken her heart when he fell so hard for Mira, but she never said anything to him. How could she have? She just needed him to be happy, even if it left her to the side, left her pushed out of the pictures, left her on her own.
Mira had never liked her, anyway. Didn’t like the inside jokes she had with Jonathan, so she’d barely seen him since they got married, even less so when Ava called her ‘mama’ as a baby.
But then she learned that they were finally divorced. Not that it seemed to have changed anything. The rain pouring outside her house looked the same as it did before. And he was still barely speaking to her. Each text she had sent to him that went unreplied felt like a brand new knife in her heart. She was still alone. And she still missed her best friend.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
It felt like her heart pulsed to the sound of his name. She looked down at her phone but still nothing. She put it down on her desk and left the attic for the first time in seventeen hours, her finished manuscript waiting to be sent to an editor. Jonathan had promised to read it first, but Clary supposed it was just empty words, after all this time. The pain was good, she told herself. It meant she wrote something real. Something that could be published.
She padded quietly through the empty house. It felt too big, still standing empty aside from her after all this time. When she bought it, she had thought she could move on from Jonathan, get married, and have a family. She had thought that something would snap and she would be okay.
But her feelings never changed.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
His name fell from her lips like a damn prayer every night. She never let anyone else even try to date her, nothing could ever feel the same as the way even a friendly hug from Jonathan set her skin on fire. She sat in her kitchen, slumped half out the back door with a cigarette dangling from her lips. She couldn’t remember when she started smoking, but she knew it was to do with Jonathan - trying to replace one addiction with another.
The sun steadily rose as she sat there, unmoving. She finally stood, moving on autopilot around the kitchen to make herself a coffee - another habit she picked up from Jonathan over the years. She sipped it slowly, watching the clock on the wall. It got louder with each tick.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
The cup slipped from Clary’s grip as her doorbell rang. She jumped, not expecting guests, and she dutifully cleaned up the cup before the bell rang again, followed by impatient knocking. She opened the door, rubbing sleep from her eyes.
“Hey.”
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
“Jonathan.” She breathed, and his name tasted like honey.
“I’ve missed you.” He whispered, wrapping his arms around her and she felt like she could sob into his shoulders. “So much. I’m so sorry I didn’t come see you sooner.” They pulled away and she invited him in with a small smile, blinking back tears. Just that one hug almost made up for all the hurt. She could nearly forget the pain of not being in his life.
“Coffee?” She managed to say and he grinned, the most relaxed she’d seen his smile in years.
They talked for what felt like hours. Jonathan found himself slipping back into an easy routine, his hand on Clary’s shoulder, a smile etched onto his face like it would never leave.
“You finally finished your book, then?” He asked her finally and she nodded. “So you’re gonna email me it, right?”
“Didn’t think you’d still want to read it. You said that years ago, when neither of us thought I would finish it.” Clary huffed and he shook his head.
“I knew you would, Clary. I always thought you would publish.” He insisted, pushing his glasses up his nose slightly before taking and squeezing her hand.
“Why did you never call me?” She whispered into the silent kitchen. Jonathan looked down but didn’t let go of her hand.
“After everything with Mira… I didn’t feel like I deserved to have anyone so amazing in my life. I knew how much I hurt you when we drifted apart, and it was because Mira asked me to, but I didn’t have to. I was so scared to be around you,” he admitted and Clary frowned.
“You were scared? Of what?”
“That Mira was right.” He sighed, rubbing his hand over his mouth. “And she was. Of course she was.” He mumbled, so quietly that Clary barely heard him.
“Right about what?” He didn’t say anything. His gaze returned to her face, though his eyes were focused on her lips.
Jonathan.
Jonathan.
“Jona-“ he leaned forward, pressing his lips against hers. Clary froze, her eyes wide. Jonathan pulled back, taking his glasses off and placing them on the table. “Can you do that again?” She whispered and he sighed in relief, bringing his hands to cup her face before he kissed her again. He tasted like cigarettes and bad coffee and she couldn’t get enough. Neither could he.
