Christina Perri´s "A Thousand Years" is a ballad she wrote for the Twilight vampire phenomenon. The song is popular all around the world and there are many marvelous cover versions of this song on youtube - look for it, you will come across things that you did not expect. Here´s a collage for a start: https://youtu.be/5De9DGlEuzU
This is my version. Songwriters Christina Perri and David Hodges put some interesting rhythmic combinations into the original. I wanted to emphasize those and in doing so ended up with phrasing that reminds me of tuareg band Tinariwen (check out Talyat Girl). Super fun to play and more difficult to stop than to just go on playing…

Another cover version of a Jethro Tull favourite of mine. Barrie Barlow´s favourite Tull song, according to an interview I read years ago. I guess he likes it because of that 12/8 pattern that has befuddled me for years. Found in another interview that it´s inspired by Captain Beefheart´s Click Clack: https://youtu.be/uNyOr4h2ZLw
That makes sense. So it´s a blues thing and might at some point be traced back to specific african rhythms? I guess so. Satch Hoyt´s Afro-sonic Mapping project might be a place for a lead on this. Or you, dear reader, do know more on this?
Done on analog synthesizers and occasional electric guitar. Most featured cats live around the corner.

This song from Jethro Tull´s "Stand Up" record initially seemed odd to me. Slow, not much happening, or, difficult to grasp what was actually happening because of strange odd metres. Probably drummer Clive Bunker felt the same? He´s missing, just like on that other slow and strange track, "Reasons for waiting". I´m very curious what Barrie Barlow might have played here because those two tracks are probably the seeds of prog rock in the Tull catalog and Barlow´s tendency was always to play along with all those patterns in changing time signatures instead of laying down a backbeat.
Myself, I went for a laid back reggae-ish feel once again because those patterns just feel so good when sequenced in a groovy fashion. Enjoy!

I love this Jethro Tull track - it has beautiful vocal harmonies combined with wonderfully odd rhythms and the cold technological shimmer of early 80s Tull. The latter inspired me to go full synthwave with this song. I habitually tend to fold all parts of a musical piece over one another: all parts of a track may ideally be superimposed over one another and played simultaniously. This track is no exceptions. I got that idea from the practice of hocket in central african music that I read about in Simha Arom´s "African Polyphony and Polyrhythm". If you ask me, this is the way to do it, having it all at the same time - the second half of this track get´s closer to that ideal while shedding it´s synthwave sheen. I do prefer Jethro Tull´s original to this take and might at some point do another one, but for now, that´s it. Enjoy!

Rattlebones A fairy-tale by Mvtter Erde "There once was a young woman living in a small village in the middle of a huge forest. The village was very poor. Again and again the terrible troll came out of the forest, plundered the fields and stables, destroyed houses, and uttered wild, terrible sounds. If someone stood in his way with the courage of despair, he killed him..."
