I have another change of plans to announce. I’m going to India.  I had to leave Austin unexpectedly, so I unfortunately wasn’t able to make my bicycle trip to Tucson. It turns out I may have been a little too ambitious with that plan anyways. The winter weather in Texas is much more dramatic and erratic than I had anticipated.
My original plan had been to live a relatively inconspicuous life in Austin for the winter -- to recuperate from the motorcycle journey and to reconnect with a good friend of mine who was living there. Not having that as a base for recuperation has been kind of a blessing, though. It has completely opened me up to the possibility of continuous travel. I’ve always said that I’m not sure if I’ll make it to California. But maybe I don’t need an endpoint at all. I’ll be updating this blog to reflect the changes. I’m still planning to return to my Rebel and make the trek across the badlands, but I’m not tied to it. I’m really not tied to anything.

I’ve been spending a lot of money lately. And since I’m not moving to Boston to take up a corporate life of luxury, I’ve decided I gotta start getting creative about money. I’m going to be travelling a lot, so it seems pointless to get a job that would expect me to stick around for more than a few weeks.  So I started looking into a couple of websites that match your skills with people who might pay you for them. Namely, Thumbtack for pet sitting and TaskRabbit for a bunch of other random labor I can sell. No jobs yet, but I’m excited to meet the people of the world who will pay me to stand in line for them, which is just one of the many services I am offering ;)

This seems like the best thing for me to be spending my time on right now. Learn to fix bikes. GET A BIKE. Yeah, that’s right. If you complete the 24 hours of bicycle fixing checklist/volunteering, these guys will let you choose your parts and build your own bike.

I’m going to go see this bike today in Lockhart, TX! It’s all I ever wanted.
Here’s the Craigslist description (with additional notes in parentheses from me):
**THIS AMAZING BICYCLE HAS HAD QUITE AN ADVENTURE. BUT NOW IT NEEDS LOVE FROM SOMEONE (this is me!!! I will, wholeheartedly!) WHO IS READY TO SHOW MORE ADVENTURE TO THIS RIG (let’s go to Tucson). I was backpacking through Europe, specifically was in a camp in Amsterdam, and saw this bicycle (omg that means it speaks Dutch). I met the owner and over a few days we came to an agreement to swap backpack for bicycle. This was originally the plan, but buying this bike was easier, cheaper, and FULLY LOADED compared to what I had boxed up and was going to attempt to mail from the US. After coming back from Europe in 2007, I used this as a daily commuter outside of Dallas. I moved to Chicago for a while and this rig went with me. Lately I am into road cycling and I need to get this bike, WHICH IS FULLY LOADED and ready to GO TOURING TODAY. This is not only an amazing offer, but an amazing BIKE!

Staycay in SoIL
I’ve been hiding out in Carbondale, IL, for the last month or so. I got to see a bunch of people I hadn’t seen in years, met the Flyover Infoshop in all its radical glory. Learned a little bit about anarchism. Learned that I’m definitely not an anarchist. I got to eat at Harbaugh’s and Longbranch, Doña Camilla’s and New Kahala. Tried some new places, too! Cristaudo’s is best for chilling out with wifi and baked goods. Sabor de Mel is a friendly, tasty Brazilian place. It was good to be back in familiar spaces on campus, too. Thank you, Morris Library for giving alumni access to wifi and study rooms! And bars, oh the bars. Cellar, how I missed you. In Princeton, whenever someone talked about the Ivy as a dive bar, I would dream about the Cellar. It’s just as wonderful as ever. PK’s, you’re all right, too. Solid place to get a cheap beer and play a game of pool. I did a lot of catching up in Carbondale, but mostly, I was studying. All month, I was preparing for several phone interviews for a job at a company in Boston. I learned a lot about how to interview, and a lot about how nervous I can get! Ultimately, though, I didn’t get the job. So I’ve got some other plans.
I think I’ve mentioned that my plan has been to winter in Austin. Well, I’m in Texas now, just hunting down a bicycle so I can be a little more independent. I left my Rebel in Carbondale at a friend’s house! It got to be too cold to take it all the way down south, and I ended up dealing with some back troubles after my trip from New Jersey, so I decided to give it a rest until the weather is warmer.
My newest plan is to take a bicycle trip! My good friend Andrew might be coming along with me. We're going to Tucson. That’s almost 900 miles from Austin. It’ll take the better part of January to get it done.

I might not be able to make the trip to Austin on my bike! It’s raining for two weeks. And then it’s winter. I haven’t figured out exactly what that means for me, my bike, and the plans yet.

I completely forgot to talk about my first major flub! When I was about ten minutes from my stop in Indiana, I pulled off the road to double check my directions. So I turned off the bike, took out my phone, and saw that yes indeed I was on the right path.
When I tried to start it again, the bike would not start. It made no noises either! I kept checking for stupid mistakes, but I couldn’t figure it out. Since the neutral light wouldn’t come on, I figured it had to be a battery issue. I gave up and figured I would start looking for a mechanic nearby.
When I looked up, guess what was across the street? A place called the Battery Masters.
Oh, PS: the stupid part of this was that when we opened the battery case, it turned out that the negative hook up had just jostled loose. I could’ve fixed that with a screw driver haha

More Motorcycle!
I’m in Urbana, IL. I made it through the first leg of the trip, and I feel very calm about the whole thing. I hate to admit how much I missed it, but Illinois really does feel like home, and it’s nice to be back.
I’ve pretty much decided to ride down to Austin, too. I was thinking originally that I would store the Rebel in Carbondale and then catch a ride with my friend down to Austin. But I’ve heard that in order to get around in Austin, you really need a vehicle. Then we were thinking that we could rent a trailer for the back of the car and take the bike down, but it’s around $200 to do that plus we don’t have a hitch for the car. So it makes sense for me to just ride it down separately. It’s doubling my trip, but what have I got to lose? It’s at least going to be warmer as I go South.
I’ll be camping in Arkansas and Texas, which I’m looking forward to. I didn’t get to camp in Ohio like I had planned, so it’d be nice to get to try out my new tent + sleeping bag.
