Note: I am by no means a professional in health or otherwise. This is personal experience. I made this as a metaphor to help my parents understand me better.

America loves to hate the UK so much, because it gives Americans a little ghost of a taste of how it feels to be a foreigner who gets to hate America.

Honestly the best thing New York has going for it is how excessively big and over the top it is, which is once again a circumstance of how new it is and which I do appreciate! I like big shit! I like sprawling metropoli! But anyone who thinks that this gives it an obvious, inherent aesthetic edge over London is kidding themselves.
Berlin is maybe the only city I've been in thats in the same natural category as nyc. I feel like by the numbers london deserves to be on the list but it is a truth univerdalky acknowledged that London kind of sucks (possible explanation: the British are a fundamentally provincial people and only developed a true metropolis by aping America)

Only Americans could think that endless uniform grid blocks flanked by identical skyscrapers are "prettier" than natural street plans, neighbourhoods and buildings that date back to the middle ages. London is a fucking beautiful city, and that comes from how layered it is, how it was an institution built up on top of itself rather than laid out all at once by 18th century colonials.
And while I do like tall buildings, London's skyscrapers' exceptional aspects come from the places where they have been forced not to ape New York's rather than where uninspired developers have followed the American model religiously. The docklands buildings are boring in shape but the area works because of the wharfs that they are built around. The City has some of the most interesting tall buildings in the world because of the obligation to respect the sight lines to St. Paul's. The Empire State and the WTC could never even aspire to being as interesting.
(and yes this is all subjective, but then I didn't start flinging mud!)

The problem is that people will sometimes start attacking people using specialist vocabularies for "lying" or "misusing words" because the words of those with specialist vocabularies don't align with their expectations, and then will get dismissive or aggressive when it is gently explained that they are the one with the misapprehension about how the word is used. That kind of pigheadedness is absolutely justifiable to get annoyed over and does have a real impact on a specialised field when it is weaponized to shape discourse en-masse. Sometimes it's the non-specialists who need to stay in their lane, these things go both ways, although the dislike for those perceived as snobby scientists would leave you thinkibg otherwise.
Anyway, every time I have to read a popular post saying "artificial intelligence does not exist, the tech bros are lying to us, it's a grift because none of these machines are actually intelligent" I become 0.05% more obnoxious and prescriptivist about terminology in public discourse.
I do think people start speaking specialist vocabularies and get mad at people when their ordinary language homophones don't mean the same thing. And I think that's a rather silly thing to get mad at. When someone says that "viruses are alive" or "Pluto is a planet" or "they did such and such performatively" they really have no stakes in like what the best theoretical construct for talking about life is or what definition of planet is going to make the cleanest spreadsheet for physicists, or what Judith Butler means when they say "performative." And frankly it doesn't have any impact on the actual specialist practices. And what they mean by it something true enough. So why care? I think of this as entirely tedious example of scientism as ideology

Brilliant episode of Dungeon Meshi today. I love how explicitly canonical Laios' autism is, and the scene with Falin, holy shit
