Pride and Prejudice on Stage
Pride and Prejudice on Stage
It is a truth universally acknowledged that adapting Pride and Prejudice is difficult.
Yeah, too cliche, I know.
Tumblr media
Sara Pascoe has a gallant effort at bringing a much-loved love story to a contemporary audience, although there are a few things that just didn’t work. Let’s start with the good stuff, shall we?…
I loved and enjoyed the multicultural aspect to it. The fact that Mr. Bennet is black…

The History of Sexuality: Reading Foucault
The History of Sexuality: Reading Foucault
I have been delving into the complexity that is Foucault’s History of Sexuality (1976). It is a fascinating read, however heavy in content for such a small book. My interest in the representation of sexuality, particularly in relation to feminism and femininity, draws me into Foucault’s discussion of powers relation in sexuality. This approach relates power to legislation and law, although…

Country Walks
Tumblr media
Writing in the summer isn’t easy. I have found myself expanding my research in order to keep my interest up. In fact, I think I’ve lost count of how many documentaries I’ve watched over the last couple of weeks on Georgian England, the Reformation and the Novel. I’m hoping this will give me a better understanding on Austen while I’m writing.
In the meantime, I will enjoy the green…

Attempting this Blog Malarky
Attempting this Blog Malarky
Tumblr media
So I always struggle to keep up with this ‘blog malarky’, but here I am, making an effort.
I am six months into this thing we like to call a PhD, and I think (add squeaky voice) that everything is going smoothly. I have passed registration, in which I have to prove that the thing that I proved during my application is actually worth doing- can’t say they aren’t thorough!
The next big milestone is…

Building Blocks
The initial months of PhD study can be the most trying and testing. After surviving my first month here, I have felt both enthralled and out of my depth; for the most part at the same time.
The difficulty is that you really don’t know everything, but you are expected to. And you are inspired by and interested in everything you read, but you can’t research that- someone else has already done it.…

Embarking on Doctoral Study
Embarking on Doctoral Study
Six months after completely a hectic and stressful MA Degree in Norwich, I am now embarking on a Ph.D. in Leicester. The next three years will be the most difficult, but hopefully the most rewarding of my life and career so far.
The first week of study, after not only Christmas, but a knee operation, and before that, working in a cafe, I am feeling somewhat inactive, while having to provide my…

Long time… Not so much writing. So it has been a very long year, without so much as looking at this blog. I have been studying a Masters at UEA in American Studies and Film Studies.

“The Feminists are mad at me now!”
In a producers meeting for a major broadcast television series, one of the male producers said about an upcoming female director (an award-winning director of pilots, films and many episodes of television): “She needs her hand held. She’s always checking with the writer to see if she’s got it.” When I objected and told him the woman was a grown-up and if he had a problem he should talk to her about it, he said, “Ohhhh, the feminists are mad at me now!”

Remake, Gender and Genre Conference in Le Havre, France
Tumblr media
It is safe to say that it has been a very long week, but one which will hopefully define the next couple of years in my emergence into the academic world.
The Universite du Havre conference was my first ever as a scholar, in which I was grateful to have the opportunity. Especially as I was the least qualified and the youngest one not only attending the event, but presenting a paper also. Thus, I…

Gone Girl, Adaptation by Fincher and the revision of the Hollywood Remake
Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl
Gone Girl is a fantastic crime thriller that grips to the very end. Its a book that grips to very end and lingers in the mind afterwards. The darkness, violent style and suspense that runs throughout the novel is a sure factor that makes David Fincher a perfect candidate to adapt it to the screen.
Gone Girl by David Fincher to be released in October
This, again, gives…

Spectral Fathoms Review by Nathan T. Dean
Spectral Fathoms Review by Nathan T. Dean
Writing a story for the first time is not an easy task, it is almost unfair to expect something spectacular. However, Nathan T. Dean’s Spectral Fathoms produces astonishing quality in the midst of a complex narrative and staggering characters.
With a cryptic name like Spectral Fathoms, it was never going to be a straightforward book, especially with numerous narrators, as well as the inclusion of…

Conference and Postgraduate Update
Conference and Postgraduate Update
Over the past week I have been developing my paper ready for the start September, however this is proving a time consuming task. I have managed to enable the piece to flow better which is always a good sign as a writer. Nevertheless, I need to contribute more the the specific content more thoroughly, this entitles more research and development of my argument. I still have a way to go.
On the…

Academic Update
Sorry for the lack of posts recently, I have been busier than I expected. What they don’t tell you about academia is that in order to get into academia you need to make money doing something you hate in order to work for a career you love.
I’ve made a little bit of progress on the Conference Paper I will be presenting at the Universitie du Harve in October. However, this is nowhere near the stage…
