After a lot of hardship over the last few months, I am finally sat in the airport awaiting the first leg of my journey to go study in Sapporo, Japan. Hopefully I don't miss either of my connecting flights :P

An update: I'm currently having issues with acquiring my visa for my study abroad year. My host university has not sent a document I need for the visa application, despite telling us they would send it in August. I'm slightly stressed as my visa appointment is next week, and all the university has said is that they don't have it yet. There's a few days left, but I'm starting to worry. These things can never be straight forward, can they?

Backlog from 24/08/2023.
Old friendships are the best. Even though we haven't hung out since college, my friend, and I met up for lunch today. We hadn't seen each other in person for 2 years, but he put together a leaving bag for me, and insisted I tell his friend about how I'm going to Japan.

011/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 28 days until I leave to study abroad!
I have given up backlogging missed days. Let's pretend that 11 comes after 7, O.K.? :P Anyway, last night I had a bit of a crisis, sort of a 'what could have been' moment. I originally took sciences at A-Level, failed them, and then stuck with humanities. Then, I took languages, and linguistics at university. I don't know why, but I decided to scroll through the MA courses in 'Marine Biology', 'Botany', 'Eviromental Sciences' etc.. Just seeing the "requires a 2:1 in a related field" section made me a bit sad. Which is totally dumb, because I'm literally going to Japan in less than a month to study, which is arguably cooler, but sometimes I wish I had just paid more attention in college, and worked a little bit harder. Well, that's enough self-loathing for today.
My plans for today:
Apply for futon rental.
Organise my bookshelf.
Revise some Genki II vocabulary.
Go out for my final meet-up with my friends.
(The first photo is my bookshelf. I may be exposing my terrible choice in books, but honestly there are much more cringe things on that shelf. Also, say hello to my little owl, he hasn't got a name yet, but I love him. The second picture is apparently what I should expect in my futon rental. I know, I'm so excited for my 100% cotton sheets :P).

007/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 32 days until I leave to study abroad!
O.K.. Maybe starting this challenge was a good idea, because I've come to see very quickly that I am not studying as much as I should be. The past few days have been very fun, but also quite unproductive for things such as studying, or even things like reading a book. So, once I get back from lunch today, I plan to force myself to do some things I've been putting off. At this point, I can barely call this a studyblr.
My plans for today:
Meet up with ANOTHER friend for lunch.
Update my academic reading log with last semester's reading.
Print off my 'Yunyu Kakunin-sho'.
Study some Genki II grammar.
Start reading a book I bought recently ('Life Ceremony: Stories', by Sayaka Murata).
(The first photo is for aesthetics only, it is my Starbucks order. Yes, I got tea. The second photo is me updating my academic reading log on the train).

Backlog: Yesterday, I met up with ANOTHER friend. I did promise a few friends that I would meet up with them some point before I go to Japan, but everyone seems to want to meet up this week. Either way, yesterday I bought a power bank (one that I can actually take on the plane with me), and got my 'Yunyu Kakunin-sho', which I personally don't think was worth the amount of stress I had while applying for it.
006/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 33 days until I leave to study abroad!
What I did:
Bought a power bank.
Went for lunch with a friend.
(The pictures are of an iced tea that I got from Costa for free, because the card machine stopped working as I was about to put my pin in, and the lunch I had with my friend at the local tea house).

Backlog(?): I have been quite busy over the past couple of days, so I'm going to quickly post the days that I missed. I didn't study much, I'll need to work on making time to study even if I have a busy day.
--------------------
005/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 34 days until I leave to study abroad!
What I did:
Submitted my documents to apply for a 'Yunyu Kakunin-sho'.
--------------------
004/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 35 days until I leave to study abroad!
What I did:
Met up with a friend, hung out, and played some board games.
Picked up my medication.
Attended my local language exchange.
(The first picture is of a board game my friend, and I played called 'Tiny Ninjas', and the second picture is of the tea house where the language exchange is hosted).

003/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 36 days until I leave to study abroad!
I didn't end up doing any bedtime reading yesterday, Pops put a film on. We're supposed to be having a barbecue later today, so I got some early morning studying done. I have a few bits, and pieces I need to sort out soon, but not urgently. Although, I do know I will procrastinate doing them.
My plans for today:
Walk Marshy.
Study some Japanese grammar from Genki II.
Read a couple of chapters of my book.
Things I need to do (at some point):
Measure my grandparents' suitcases to make sure they're the right size.
Organise my belongings into storage boxes.
Tidy my desk.
(I took the picture of the flowers on my walk, and, yes, I studied on my bed. I promise I have a desk, it's just currently under all my things).

His name is Marshall, but we tend to call him anything but his actual name. He may take over this blog, eventually :D

002/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 37 days until I leave to study abroad!
Today I have had quite a lazy day. I woke up later than I intended, but I've managed to at least study a little. I haven't gotten around to doing anything else yet, but I will probably read a bit before bed.
Plans I had for today:
Review some Japanese vocabulary.
Read a few chapters of my book.
(Studying at the kitchen table isn't very aesthetic, so here's a photo of my dog. To make it relevant, let me say that 'dog' is '犬' in Japanese :P).

I thought I found a shiny, new Genki II on the shelf, but I opened it to find a checkout receipt left in it with my name on it—from 2 months ago. Also, they're reorganizing the library. Very exciting.

001/100 days of productivity, and (roughly) 38 days until I leave to study abroad!
I figured I'd give this a shot!
During the holidays, I have realized that I wish I had paid more attention during class, and done the kanji worksheets my lecturer had set for homework. Here's to me finally trying to study the kanji I should have already learnt by now.
My plans for today:
Wait for some board games to be dropped off.
Go to the doctors, and sort out some forms for Japan.
Go to the library, and study some old kanji sheets.
Read at least two chapters of my book.
(I took the picture while I was sitting in the park, waiting for my bus).

Towards the end of my 1st year at university, I participated in our 'East Asian Language Performance Showcase.' It was essentially a mixture of performances by Korean language, and Japanese language students. I made a messy animation on my iPad, pulled a plot out of thin air, and voice acted all of the lines myself, in Japanese. It was embarrassing listening to my own voice in a room full of people, that's for sure. Obviously, I made another one the following year, in almost the exact same quality.
Both videos are in Japanese, with both Japanese, and English subtitles.
The first video, "Fluffy's Adventure," stars my beloved marimo, Fluffy. I jokingly made an IMDb page for it, not expecting it to be approved. It was, and the plot summary reads: "Follow Fluffy the Marimo in this epic story of betrayal as he goes off into the big wide world in hopes of finding a new friend."
The sequel, "Fluffy's Adventure #2," follows the same cast, "Follow Fluffy the Marimo in this heartwarming story as he attempts to find a new home in time before his owner leaves him behind to go to Japan."
For context, marimo are green balls of algea that are often referred to as 'moss balls.' I am obsessed with them, and I currently own eight.
Considering I knew absolutely no Japanese when I first started university, I think these videos are a good reminder to myself of the progress I have made over the past 2 years. Hopefully I can find a way to carry on this tradition while I am studying abroad.

A Studyblr(?) Introduction
Hello, welcome to my studyblr.
I'm Ryan.
I'm 21 years old.
He/him
I am taking a language, and linguistics degree.
I am studying Japanese as part of my degree. Additionally, I have taken some Ukrainian classes on the side, I made an attempt at teaching myself Esperanto in college, and I studied German in secondary school.
I have just finished my 2nd year at university, and will be studying in Japan for 1 year from the end of September.*
I play taiko, I ramble on for hours about marimo, and I like to draw (and I occasionally make amateur animations).
I am unapologetically dyslexic.
I'm here solely for the vibes.
I'm almost 100% sure this blog will quickly become a studyblr-langblr-bookblr-art-general-shenanigans-travel blog.
I will be documenting every cup of tea, or coffee that I consume.
*If I eventually get my visa (I will, I am just impatient).
I mainly made this blog so that I can track my own progress, and to make sure that I study. I can admit, I currently do not study as much as I should. Let's see if this blog fixes that. I also want to use this blog to document my study abroad experience, once I am in Japan.
Lastly, I have no idea how Tumblr works.

I got the bus into the city far earlier than I intended this morning, so I decided to stop by the coffeeshop that my friends work at, after being recommended to visit there instead of going to Costa for my caffeine fix.
My friend made me an adorable mocha, and reminded me that 'bear' in Japanese is 'クマ'. For context, we originally met at a language exchange. Honestly, I don't know what I'd do without her as I forgot to ask for oat milk, but she let me know she had used oat milk when she brought out my drink. I felt bad ruining the adorable design.
I also had a muffin, and made progress with reading my book. I'm on chapter 3 of 'American Hippo' by Sarah Gailey, and I intend to finish it before I leave to study abroad this coming month. I am definitely enjoying it so far, it was recommended by the person who works at the local bookshop, so I trusted it would be good.
I will make an introductory post for this account soon, but I just had to share this cute bear! (I'm not entirely sure what I want this blog to be, but rest assured that future posts will absolutely not be this aesthetic, or long).
